Is it a mistake to believe that people who use foodbanks won't have access to "proper" kitchen facilities or can't afford the energy costs?

I thought it was commonly said a couple of years ago that, for example, a surprisingly high proportion of qualified nurses had to rely on foodbanks.

Or was that just empty hyperbole?

Yes, this is what I don't understand either. Aren't people usually only allowed to use a foodbank for a very limited time?

I totally get that anybody can hit the skids financially, so all their food stocks (and other consumables) quickly get used up and they can't afford to buy more, hence they need to be provided with it; but wouldn't most clients have had the wherewithal to acquire a £1 tin opener at some point in the previous 10-20 years?

CombatLingerie · 02/07/2024 18:30

That’s tremendous @girlmeetsboy well done!

I don't know if anyone has mentioned it but the tins make the best Yorkshire pudding tins!

Genius

By special can opener do you mean the bog standard metal butterfly ones because that's what I always used to easily open one.

I used to love a frey bentos soggy pastry sandwich in my youth as a hangover comfort .

Omg I need a chicken curry pie roll 😋

SilverBranchGoldenPears · 02/07/2024 18:32

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA SPECIAL CAN OPENER???

so just a normal tin opener then? What planet are people from?????
I had one once as a kid and thought it was bloody delicious. Was at a friend‘s house and my parents were champagne socialists so I never had such delicacies. I’m salivating now.

Oh really I fancy a FB pie now. @OnTheRightSideOfGeography you gave me a laugh. I often say my favourite words in the English language are ‘cook from frozen’. Can you still get those Heinz puddings in a tin? They were jam or golden syrup? My DS used to love those. They always came out lovely and moist not like those microwave jobs. Yes@Heronwatcher those of a certain age bear the scars of the corned beef tin. Mine is a rather magnificent one across the base of one thumb.

Nope, they definitely don't have those tinned puddings anymore, I have spent time looking for them as they were amazing.

They do little microwave puddings in a plastic tub which are decent but not the same.

DumbassHamsterSitterPerson · 02/07/2024 16:56

They are crap for tins of tuna too. You can't drain them against the lid very easily.

Cant you turn the tin opener around to cut through the top?

Now really fancies a fray bentos pie with chips and garden peas. Will likely be super disappointed.

CombatLingerie · 02/07/2024 18:35

Oh that’s a shame @Gingerkittykat I find the microwave ones a wee bit dry as you say not the same. Plus the cans would be recyclable now so less plastic?

People who are newly homeless in a hostel, new care leavers or women escaping abuse are not likely to have a tin opener at the top of their priority list.

A young relative of mine was made homeless and put into a hostel that was lots of bedsits with cooking facilities, the council no longer supply a basic kitchen pack so no pots and pans, cutlery or tin openers.

I loved them when I was young but recently "treated" myself to one. Either they've changed completely or I have 🤣

Haha I recently came across some Findus Crispy Pancakes in a local shop (I was sure they had been discontinued).

My cousins had them all the time when we were kids and I was SO jealous as my parents wouldn't let me. So I grabbed the opportunity as a 38 year old woman.

Let's just say it was a bit of an anticlimax.

girlmeetsboy · 02/07/2024 18:37

@BeachParty @CombatLingerie just need hubs to eat 5 more for a full set 🤣

Not always. Some tin openers work both ways, but a lot of the cheaper ones don't in my experience.

Miyagi99 · 02/07/2024 18:38

They don’t need a special can opener!

BraMaHaLas · 02/07/2024 18:38

Donate them with a tin opener?

Starlightstarbright3 · 02/07/2024 18:39

I am posting for the knowledge of the special can opener ..

mine works fine … my teen loves a fray benson pie

Lots of people using food banks have been in poverty for many years. Lots have to make use of them beyond the short term. Often people with disabilities or mental health issues are long term poor because benefits are not enough.

Food banks are used by some people short term, but lots have to use them into the long term. This charity sector is basically doing the job of the welfare state.

Youd also be surprised how many people don’t have a tin opener, or any cooking pans and who are living in single rooms in emergency accommodation and have to move with little or no notice and have left possessions behind or never had some of these things.

The basics many assume all households have such as core cooking equiptment just aren’t owned by lots of lots have never used that stuff and don’t know how to use it.

People might only have access to a kettle or a kettle and a microwave. They might be eating out of he packets.

Im often amazed by how little lots of people know about how the other half live…often long term.

I'd consider buying a tin opener and including it with the Frey Bentos pie. Then they've got both.

GasPanic · 02/07/2024 18:42

The bit about needing an old can opener is nonsense.

I can open them with a WL Magican.

They are passable and have got plenty of calories in them. So no too bad if you are on your uppers. I would not like to eat more than one a week though.

As for apocalypse food, I always buy stuff that I can eat cold as well as hot.

Although I can manage one of these once a month or so, eating one cold would be a real struggle.

The mince ones
I want to keep it as a nice memory though as I'll scared they'll be crap now I'm an adult 😂

Love those pies. Everyone should have a can opener?!

AliceMcK · 02/07/2024 18:43

I remember my first real bf loving these, it’s all he ate, took him seconds to open one. I think I was pretty good at it at the time too, but that was 30 years ago, I don’t think I have ever opened one since.

I also can’t remember if it was a standard can opener or the old stab can openers as we used both back then.

No I realise that there will be some people with nothing but the clothes they're standing in; but surely there must also be plenty of clients - the nurses and teachers etc. that we hear about - who do have a home with the basics in, but just can't currently make ends meet to afford food?

But if people don't have a can opener, what's the likelihood they'll have a kettle, microwave, cutlery or crockery? Out of all those things,a can opener is one of the cheaper items and if you're really up against it, you'd get that before the kettle or the microwave, because if it comes to it, you can eat canned food cold.

One of the most popular items at food banks is canned rice pudding which, even Ambrosia needs a can opener for (I've often read that cheaper/supermarket brands tend to need an opener but branded have ring pulls, but it's not always the case).

We've got a 'mutual aid' FB group here and people are literally asking for a pound for their kid's nappies or electric.

I'm sure some are scammers but I personally know some and their situation and try to help them.

Several of my mates are homeless - a couple are in the local Salvation Army hostel or a nearby hostel that have facilities but most are in doorways/tents. No they are not going to be able to cook and open a pie 😅
