They need a special can opener to get into them

Lots of people at our food bank hand back tins and ask for ring pulls instead. They literally cannot afford a can opener. One other thing is that the Frey Bentos pies need an oven and 45 minutes to cook . Impractical for many as they only have a ring to cook on and cannot afford that much fuel.

Fray Bentos pies are one of our most frequent returns.

I loved Heinz tinned ravioli as a kid! Now just the thought of that (was it slightly gritty, or is that a false memory??) stodge makes me feel sick... there's something about tinned, highly processed meat that turns my stomach.

Ooh I loved tinned ravioli with grated cheese on it. I also loved a Fray Bentos steak pie. Haven't had either for a long time.

I found that chilling them before cooking got a good rise to the pastry… Can’t remember who said that first, though🤷‍♀️ Probably read it in ‘Best’ or something like that.

Woah, woah, stop right there - that's starting to sound suspiciously like a recipe rather than a quick no-brain-required meal option!

Ready Meals sometimes try this outrageous nonsense too, telling me to stop it half-way to add two tablespoons of water and give it a good stir; or to only pierce the lid to start with but then later completely remove it. I didn't buy a no-effort Asda microwave curry only to have to start channelling my inner Nigella Grin

Apologies @ ontherightsideofgeography

I did stray towards some CordonBleu there… 😁

I would have thought a tin of corned beef would be better since it comes with its own opener and can be eaten cold or used for cooking.

These things are lethal- if the key goes ever so slightly wonky you have to try and straighten it up before the key severs itself using your hands and end up nearly severing your fingers to the bone!

If the millennials can’t work a “special” tin opener ( 😆 ) then I don’t fancy their chances with one of these bastards!

Janehasamane · 02/07/2024 18:04

Op did you get it from a food bank and don’t have a standard can opener? I’m trying to work out what drove the post.

Scarletttulips · 02/07/2024 18:04

OPs not been back.

wonder if she’s staved to death?

Nope

Howdoesitworkagain · 02/07/2024 16:29

What? A “special” can opener? Not just a normal can opener? 😂

😆

BeachParty · 02/07/2024 18:05

Had one a few weeks ago and we've only got a "normal" tin opener!
Worked fine.

Parrotcoop · 02/07/2024 18:05

I do feel old. Has the ring pull really become so ubiquitous that the time opener is largely obsolete?

B0G0F · 02/07/2024 18:07

What's worthy about chickpeas and what are frown on biscuits? @MrsTerryPratchett

feellikeanalien · 02/07/2024 18:07

I've just discovered that you can Air Fry a Fray Bentos pie.😁

Littletreefrog · 02/07/2024 18:09

Any other 'geriatric millenials' I.e those born in the early 80s getting annoyed with people throwing about 'millenials' don't understand can openers and rotary phones and floppy discs etc? You can be a millenial and still remember no mobile phones, Walkmans and no Internet.

Cangar · 02/07/2024 18:10

Air fryers are just little ovens so anything that goes in the big oven can go in there! The chickpeas and black beans I buy both need a tin opener. Most other things seem to be a pull now.

SoulofaPanda · 02/07/2024 18:13

Forget the can opener… shouldn’t donate them as they are disgusting

Begsthequestion · 02/07/2024 18:14

Eh? I open cans with a knife sometimes, so I don't see how a tin opener would be too difficult.

Manxexile · 02/07/2024 18:14

FangsForTheMemory · 02/07/2024 17:39

PS: there is a scene with a tin of pineapple in 'Three men in a boat' by Jerome K Jerome that is so funny the first time I read it I had to put the book down and walk away from it.

That tin of pineapple has nothing on a Fray Bentos steak and kidney pie. Nothing.

Trying to open that tin is one of the funniest passages I've ever read. I nearly fell out of bed laughing at it!

Fray Bentos pies are one of our most frequent returns.

Basic tin openers are available for 99p. Can be bought in supermarkets.

Why doesn't the foodbank add them to the "wanted" list? So many shelf-stable "meals on a can" do still need them.

LiterallyOnFire · 02/07/2024 18:21

RB68 · 02/07/2024 17:58

I think the point is that often people on foodbanks dont have access to an equipped kitchen for even the basics if for e.g. they are in B&B - so really its down to the foodbank to be aware of each families situation e.g. have a home with kitchen or limited to a kettle or similar and no kitchen

A tin opener is not in the same ballpark as an "equipped kitchen".

Manxexile · 02/07/2024 18:23

Is it a mistake to believe that people who use foodbanks won't have access to "proper" kitchen facilities or can't afford the energy costs?

I thought it was commonly said a couple of years ago that, for example, a surprisingly high proportion of qualified nurses had to rely on foodbanks.

Or was that just empty hyperbole?

x88mph · 02/07/2024 18:25

Fray Bentos pie was a major treat when I was a kid. I haven't had one for well over 30 years but I still remember how much I loved that soggy pastry.

Or sellotape a can opener to the top of the tin when you donate them.

You're welcome.

girlmeetsboy · 02/07/2024 18:29

I don't know if anyone has mentioned it but the tins make the best Yorkshire pudding tins!

Don’t donate Frey bentos pies to food banks
CombatLingerie · 02/07/2024 18:29

Oh really I fancy a FB pie now. @OnTheRightSideOfGeography you gave me a laugh. I often say my favourite words in the English language are ‘cook from frozen’. Can you still get those Heinz puddings in a tin? They were jam or golden syrup? My DS used to love those. They always came out lovely and moist not like those microwave jobs. Yes@Heronwatcher those of a certain age bear the scars of the corned beef tin. Mine is a rather magnificent one across the base of one thumb.

McSteamyorMcdreamy · 02/07/2024 18:29

This thread made me crave for a FB, so have just gone out to get one for dinner. Can confirm a standard tin opener works. Soggy pastry here we come 🤤
