I asked last month if I would be entitled to the cost of living payment in October - the dates have just been released - if I got a payment on 21st august does this mean I will get the payment- I don't quite understand the statements . Sorry for being a bit thick ' •
To be eligible for the Cost of Living Payment from DWP, you need to have been entitled to a payment for a qualifying benefit between 18 August 2023 and 17 September 2023, or payment for an assessment period, ending between these dates. From HMRC, you need to have received a payment of tax credits for any day in the period between 18 August 2023 and 17 September 2023.

If I have read it properly you should do

phallusfallacy · 20/09/2023 08:18

If 21st is your assessment period end date (eg you're paid UC into your account on 28th) you need to have qualified for a payment for the assessment period ending 21st August. Or if 21st is your payment date this means your assessment period ends 14th. If you are entitled to a payment for the period ending 14th September then you'll qualify.

pootsy · 20/09/2023 08:22

My last payment was 21st august - so that means I won't get the payment then if I understand correctly

Are you due a payment tomorrow?

ginandtonicwithlimes · 20/09/2023 10:32

I had a payment on the 6th of September. I think we are entitled?

I say you qualify as you had a payment between those dates.

No my last payment was 21aigust

We last received a UC payment on the 12th of August, we won't get the cost of living payment will we?

Did you get one in September or was that a Nil reward?

Clefable · 20/09/2023 10:45

It says entitled to get a payment, not that you received a payment during those dates. It means that between those dates, you were eligible for a payment, so between those dates you fit the criteria for claiming whatever benefit entitles you to it.

If you get a zero reward you don't get it. We didn't get the first one for that reason.

Clefable · 20/09/2023 10:48

In other words, it's asking about the assessment period, not when you got paid. So you need to have had an assessment period that ended somewhere between those two dates. Given that lasts a month, anyone regularly claiming monthly benefits etc will fit that criteria.

Clefable · 20/09/2023 10:50

Yes but a zero reward means you aren't entitled to a payment, as per wording, which is what it says isn't it? It means that during the assessment period of the dates they give, if you are eligible for paid benefits during that time, you will get the money. It's not asking when the money is paid out.

September was £0.

GuinnessBird · 20/09/2023 11:00

Yeah you won't be eligible. Stupid rule really. If you are on UC it is hardly likely you are swimming in cash

Decideforme · 20/09/2023 11:07

If your payment was 21st August and you didn't get one in September, then unfortunately you won't qualify because the assessment period would have ended on 14th August. The dates given say that the assessment period has to be between the 18th August and 17th September. The payment being between those dates isn't enough to qualify.

It says "or". I think you have it wrong. The poster you are replying to isn't entitled but you don't need your assesment period to be in those dates.

So sorry to jump on this, I have moved for tax credits to universal credit, after receiving a letter to do this.

My last tax credit payment was 15th August, my first universal credit payment will be 05th October. Does this mean I will not qualify?

Edited

The 'or' is because some DWP benefits are paid on the day they are due, and UC is paid a week after the payment is decided. So the 'or' refers to the different benefits, not different dates for the same benefit. UC is paid on one date, but the payment relates to the assessment period a week prior. It's the assessment period that counts for UC, not the payment date.

ginandtonicwithlimes · 20/09/2023 13:43

Should just go by payment (if you got one or not). Although with that assessment period most will get it as long as they didn't get a zero.

pootsy · 20/09/2023 21:34

Sorry .. I've just thought ... I got paid fortnightly .. so the 7 th and then the 21st of august ... I guess I will just have to wait and see ..

OP if you received a payment of universal credit on the 21st August, you will be entitled to the £300 cost of living payment.

It doesn't matter what you got before or after, you received a universal credit payment within the qualifying period. Therefore you will receive the cost of living payment.

I got a Universal Credit payment the day after you, on the 22nd August, so I will be getting the £300 too. X

Unfortunately this is not correct - you have to have received an actual payment between those dates, of £1 or more, to receive the cost of living payment. If you were entitled in principle to Universal Credit but you received 0 because your income was too high, you will not get the £300.

The "entitled to get a payment" bit refers to late applicants for Universal Credit, or those that have their award revised retrospectively. For example, someone that makes a claim for Universal Credit in January 2024 starting August 2023. If this is approved, and if they are retrospectively awarded some UC between the qualifying dates, they will then at the same time receive the £300 CoL payment, even though technically they did not receive a Universal Credit payment into their bank in either August or September 2023.
