I asked last month if I would be entitled to the cost of living payment in October - the dates have just been released - if I got a payment on 21st august does this mean I will get the payment- I don't quite understand the statements . Sorry for being a bit thick ' •
To be eligible for the Cost of Living Payment from DWP, you need to have been entitled to a payment for a qualifying benefit between 18 August 2023 and 17 September 2023, or payment for an assessment period, ending between these dates. From HMRC, you need to have received a payment of tax credits for any day in the period between 18 August 2023 and 17 September 2023.

If your payment was 21st August and you didn't get one in September, then unfortunately you won't qualify because the assessment period would have ended on 14th August. The dates given say that the assessment period has to be between the 18th August and 17th September. The payment being between those dates isn't enough to qualify.

This is NOT correct.

She got paid UC (the qualifying benefit)on the 21st August. Therefore she IS eligible.

Please anyone reading this thread for answers - there is a lot of well meant but incorrect information action on here!! Please don't rely on the advice given on this thread, it is mostly wrong.

I’m sure that if you have deductions (overpayment of TCs/ universal credit advance) that reduce a positive award to a nil payment, you can still get the COL. this might affect some people with a nil award.

Nope. The final total is what is important.

I’m pretty sure that’s not as cut and dry as you think. It’s explained here.

Sorry I was replying to @ginandtonicwithlimes there

My last tax credit payment was the 30th August and then they stopped because my child turned 18. Meaning from the 1st September I was entitled to 0. Will I get a payment now I’m not receiving tax credits but I still received a payment in the qualifying period? So confusing!

"You are eligible for the Cost of Living Payment of £300 if you were entitled to a payment (or later found to be entitled to a payment) of Universal Credit for an assessment period that ended in the period 18 August 2023 to 17 September 2023." (Bolding mine)

The payment was made on 21/08/23 but the assessment period ended on 14/08/23, which is 4 days before the eligibility period. The OP states that they did not receive UC in September, so they weren't eligible for a payment in respect of the assessment period 15/08/23-14/09/23, which would have fallen in the eligibility period.

Does anyone here work for the dwp who can give us a definite answer?

ThisWormHasTurned · 21/09/2023 23:19

I am so confused. I got a payment 8th August but I wasn’t eligible 8th September because I did an extra shift and I got fuel reimbursed so does that mean I miss out? Ironically I only get half for an extra shift because I lose out on my UC 🤷🏻‍♀️

ThisWormHasTurned · 21/09/2023 23:27

Just checked and my fuel reimbursement wasn’t counted as ‘income’. Foolish me doing overtime if it means I miss out on this!

Decideforme · 22/09/2023 05:40

@ThisWormHasTurned in most cases if your payment was £0 for that period, you don't qualify. However, if your award was reduced to £0 because of a debt or rent reduction, or a sanction (and you were given an emergency payment for heating, etc) you still may qualify. So if you award was, say £47, but you had an advance payment and the amount you need to pay back each month is £50, your award would be £0 but you'd still qualify because you did 'get' UC, you just paid it all back to DWP.

ThisWormHasTurned · 22/09/2023 06:15

No that wasn’t my situation so I guess I won’t qualify.

You are wrong, we get a nil payment most months and we are entitled to it

We have deductions for TC overpayment, UC advance and the rest goes to rent

Arthurnewyorkcity · 23/09/2023 06:06

Being a bit dim here but I'm pretty sure I'm not entitled to it but wanted to check. I opened a UC claim 26th August (i think) and will be paid about £900 on the 27th September. 26th is within the dates but they wouldn't have known if I was entitled for some time? Hoping I don't miss it as circumstances are dire
Thank you

Unfortunately you're not entitled because if you opened your claim on 26th August your assessment period finished on 25th September, which is after the deadline of 17th September. Unfortunately, it is when the assessment period ends that is counted, not when it starts.

Arthurnewyorkcity · 23/09/2023 06:51

@Decideforme thank you for that. I've just double checked and it was 21st -20th Sept. How disappointing but I suppose there has to be some date.

Jasperdale · 23/09/2023 09:49

Phoned up and my last payment was 30 August and I was told I was entitled to it. I assumed as my claim had ended (child turned 18) that I wouldn’t be.

Welcometothelionsden · 23/09/2023 13:53

I have a first time zero payment in that month (no coincidence perhaps) thanks to a cost of living payment by my employer - would have been better off without the payment from my employer.

Civil service? I'm only part time but I'd have been the same if I worked full time. I'd go with not a coincidence

Welcometothelionsden · 23/09/2023 20:19

Yes civil service. I was hoping for later eligibility period dates but knew it was likely this would happen.

ThisWormHasTurned · 20/10/2023 18:41

I’ve had my letter today to say I’m getting the payment! 🎉 It’ll be so helpful to me. Just had to fork out to get my washing machine repaired that is 14 months old.

pootsy · 20/10/2023 18:45

Ah well done the worm has turned !!! I've not had any notification of any kind so I don't think I will get it - ho hum! Very pleased for you though !!

I’m entitled but not had a notification @pootsy

Thejackrussellsrule · 20/10/2023 18:52

It's not your payment date that matters, what are you assessment dates (these will be on your UC statement).

ThisWormHasTurned · 20/10/2023 20:06

Mine came through the post, arrived today (very soggy!). I only started claiming in February so I wasn’t sure how it would work.
