Let's just say I won't be returning
Unfortunately nothing had a price on and it was too late to back out once it was rung through

I'm joining the '£9 is very reasonable following recent price rises' camp. I was thinking £12 until I scrolled down and saw your update.
If buying the higher quality stuff from a supermarket currently, 6 eggs would be £3.50. 6 premium sausages are about £4, so 3 (if you were able to half the pack) is £2. However, butcher's sausages tend to be bigger and shrink less, so they are always going to cost more. I don't think upwards of £1 each is unreasonable based on that. I have no idea about the cost of black pudding, but I can't imagine a whole one would be less than £5.

Goldensunnydays81 · 17/01/2023 07:33

I don’t think that is too bad and I don’t mind paying butchers prices lots of our butchers meat is from his own family farm or local producers like eggs etc
It shocks me sometimes that supermarket meat can be so cheap like £3/4 for a chicken just seems a bit crazy

TheKitchenWitch · 17/01/2023 07:43

OP, just how cheap do you want your food to be? I mean, really? From a butcher, so not a massive chain supermarket!

Quartz2208 · 17/01/2023 07:50

@Metabigot from £6 two years ago to £9 now is actually fairly accurate across the board. Eggs are hard to come by and have increased in price and everything is more expensive. The price you paid from a butcher is (sadly) correct nowadays and actually a fairly good price.

At the moment looking back at what prices were is just going to depress you.

TheChosenTwo · 17/01/2023 07:52

Haven’t looked yet but I reckon £11.50
3 sausages - £3
6 eggs - £4.50
Black pudding £4

going back to see if there’s an answer now!

OntarioBagnet · 17/01/2023 07:56

No idea but the lack of clear pricing is why I never go to a butchers.

BarbaraofSeville · 17/01/2023 08:01

Most butchers and farm shops are perfectly clearly priced, so it's a surprise that this one wasn't.

She’s not wrong though, is she?

No, she isn't. Plus I'm pretty sure she didn't move her lips (apologies if pp uses a talk to type keyboard).

OP, that's cheap. And I'm in Yorkshire!

MotherOfHouseplants · 17/01/2023 08:15

Is this in fact an innovative marketing strategy for a very reasonably-priced butchers?

I'm veggie now but when I ate meat, I would try to buy from a butchers (shop local and all that).

I'm rubbish at weights so I'd just say "how much is enough mince for 4 hungry people" or whatever. Most of them would be happy to answer or show you. People would also go in and say "can I have £4 worth of mince" or "how much is a single chicken breast" if they were sold by llb.

So even if, like me, you are rubbish at converting llb to £ or knowing how much you need, a good Butcher will help.

GoingOnce · 17/01/2023 08:38

I would have guessed £8 so your update doesn’t seem shocking to me.

i think it is!

runlittlemonster · 17/01/2023 08:58

I’m sorry but you lost me at ONE sausage each!

FerretInAFrock · 17/01/2023 09:04

I’d give your local trading standards a call - they should put the wind up them to display prices!

Sunnistery · 17/01/2023 09:07

Sounds perfectly reasonable to me. Quality food from a local source and small business. No wonder the supermarket giants have put so many out of business when folk want decent food at rock bottom prices.

Lovelysausagedogscrumpy · 17/01/2023 09:07

Tesco at the weekend. Pack of 10 high end Edwards of Conwy pork sausages, £4, 10 large free range eggs £2.30, pack (4 thick slices) Simon Howie black pudding, £1.50. £.7.80 total for more than double the quantity. Why would you want to be gouged by your local butchers when quality produce is readily available elsewhere?

StarInTheHeavens · 17/01/2023 09:15

I guessed £11

ouch321 · 17/01/2023 09:17

That's v reasonable and in line with supermarket prices but for better produce quality I bet.

What is unreasonable is the single sausage but this is Mumsnet I suppose so par for the course.

thewooster · 17/01/2023 09:24

@Metabigot I'd pay £9 for what you bought especially from a local butcher/farm shop. More importantly was the quality good?

Summertimesunshineandfizz · 17/01/2023 09:26

when I was a child my grandmother used to feed her dog black pudding because it was so cheap!

I am not usually one to defend the MN orthorexics but our butcher makes absolutely enormous sausages that are genuinely as thick as a chubby baby's arm so I don't think this is quite like the threads where the OP claims she can't manage a whole custard cream to herself.

Autumndays123 · 17/01/2023 09:32

£9 is really cheap. No wonder small businesses are going out of business when people are so tight fisted

WarningToTheCurious · 17/01/2023 09:33

I’d find one large sausage as part of a fry up would be plenty for me too, especially with eggs, fried bread or toast, mushrooms, tomatoes etc.

Shade17 · 17/01/2023 09:34

BarbaraofSeville · 16/01/2023 10:07

Maybe the one sausage was to go with black pudding and eggs, plus toast, beans, tomatoes, hash browns and mushrooms in a cooked breakfast?

That wouldn't be too bad.

That would still be pitiful

OfCourseDimSum · 17/01/2023 09:36

The very nice Butchers down the road from me has rather amazing home made pork pies. I don’t like pork pies but these are fab and DS buys them occasionally. I bought one in the summer and it was £5.50. I think that’s an ok price for home made sausages and black pudding.
