What temp is your house right now?

And do you have the heating on?

I thought it was a bit chilly this morning/last night but moving around today it was ok (hoovering etc)
We are sitting on the couch tonight with blankets, and ds just commented it seems to be warmer to night than last night. Checked the thermostat and we are sitting at 15.5 degrees. But we are ok tbh.

How warm is your house tonight?

(No heating yet and I think we are doing ok feeling cold wise iyswim? None of the kids have complained yet! Although we have a box of blankets by the couch. Have put up an extra set of double lines curtains on the main "cold" windows, put in extra foam on windows that were a bit leaky and tend to go to bed earlyish)

Heating finished but radiators still quite hot. Thermostat in the warmest room says 20.9. Usually 3 degrees higher than the room next door.

Autistic ds2 really feels the cold but is too rigid about what he wears to layer up so w don't skimp on heating when he's home.

Kona84 · 17/11/2022 01:28

our house didn’t drop below 21 today.
new build terraced and I think neighbours might have had their heating on for a bit tonight as it got up to 23 in the living room.
not had the heating on yet but my 13 month old daughters room is getting chilly in the early hours. So might have to have it come on about 4 for an hour- or bring her into our bed

AnnieSnap · 17/11/2022 01:45

The temperature in the living room where our thermostat sits is 19.5. Fortunately, our house holds the heat quite well, so it really only needs to be turned on to 19c, sometimes 19.5c for an hour or so in the morning and again early evening. It’s set to come on at 18c otherwise. I have asthma, so I can’t have the air cold in the house. Plus, as has been mentioned, mould is likely to develop in a house that is pretty constantly cold. I have noticed that when we have left the house at 18c, condensation is noticeable in the kitchen and garden room.

The World Health Organisation states that 18c is fine for young, healthy adults, wearing warm clothing, but young children, the elderly, those with lung disease and some other health problems, need higher temperatures.

8°C, it's rented and the storage heaters have stopped working.

That’s awful. I’m sorry you are in that situation and I hope your landlord does something about it. Can you afford to buy some kind of plug-in heater?

comfyshoes2022 · 17/11/2022 02:37

heating on. 22.

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 17/11/2022 04:24

19 here. It’s -10 outside and snowing.

Zrt · 17/11/2022 04:34

Activelyannoyed · 16/11/2022 20:48

World health says nor below 18 or you risk respiratory illness, mine is about 21. We have the log burner on, it’s Cold upstairs but I will put the heating on for an hour before bed.

your house must feel very uncomfortable indeed

I'm gobsmacked at this, I had no idea that the World health recommended this. I lived without heating last year and found it's fine down to about 15 degrees (which is where I am currently). When it gets to 10 then I suffer a bit, but I'm used to really layering up, hot drinks etc. I will have no heating this year either. I'm very thankful that due to global warming it isn't colder.

Beat me to it 😀
It's 20.5C in my living room and -13C outside.

Zrt · 17/11/2022 04:35

18C is a luxury far out of my hands

CobraChicken · 17/11/2022 04:44

Forgot to answer about whether the heating is on. Yes, but we heat the entire house with a wood furnace and the wood is free (but with significant time and effort involved.)

It’s also highly illegal. I hope you have complained to the council and CAB netwb. myurbanjungle.com/explore/blog/how-long-can-a-landlord-leave-you-without-heating-uk/ There’s a link inside about claiming compensation. If the ll won’t provide you with heaters, you could buy heaters and claim compensation… but only if you’ve got spare cash up front.

Mummyoflittledragon · 17/11/2022 05:05

I meant to add. Downstairs 18 in the areas, where we spend most of our time. Upstairs. Dd’s room must be at least 20. I blasted bedroom before sleep as it was about 15 to get it up to around 17.5.

Merryweather80 · 17/11/2022 06:31

It was 12 degrees in my bathroom earlier as one of the dc had left the window open. 14/15 degrees in the rest of the house. I'm disabled and have brittle asthma. I've scarring on one lung from previous bouts of pneumonia. I also have had pleurisy several times. We haven't been able to afford the central heating over the last two years except the odd hour here and there.

I was shivering earlier. I had a tee and jumper on, dp made me a hot water bottle and wrapped me and ds in a blanket.

I am dreading this winter. I honestly think it may be my last. I'm 42. 3 primary age kids.
It's heat or eat despite cold weather payments and govt fuel help.

That sounds really tough.
Prople with medical conditions who need a warm house really should get more help.

That’s awful are you claiming everything you can? I know this might be a silly question but is there any way to afford running a little fan heater now and again? Could you all live in one room over the winter?

Merryweather80 · 17/11/2022 08:34

@Activelyannoyed and @Fireballxl5 Thank you both for your replies. Sadly benefits like pip/ dla haven’t risen over the last few years bar the odd pound or two. I’m very grateful for the money I do receive, don’t get me wrong. When I changed to universal credit, suddenly we seem so much worse off. Carers allowance my dp receives for me is deducted from the amount we receive. Five of us are expected to exist on £1600 a month. It’s just not feasible. Housing and council tax costs takes over half of that before turning on a tap, a light switch or eating. We only live in a two up two down, but rurally, close to the river. Im sure that makes it feel colder, certainly damper. Part of me thinks my family would be financially better off without me being a drain on our resources.

Christmas will be dire- Dickensian in more ways than one.
I think of the career I had and the carefree life I used to lead before my accident and conditions worsened because of it.

Activelyannoyed · 17/11/2022 08:39

@Merryweather80 Do you get housing benefit, or is the house owned?

BloaterW1 · 17/11/2022 08:47

14c feel fine with a jumper on. Thankfully don't really feel the cold . It's been mild so far this winter I think there will be some massive energy bills this year and eyewatering next year as predicted the help ends for a lot of people.

Merryweather80 · 17/11/2022 09:01

@Activelyannoyed The housing benefit is part of universal credit. We then pay our costs from the money received. So essentially it’s one monthly amount replacing housing, tax credits etc.

Matchingcollarandcuffs · 17/11/2022 09:10

@Merryweather80 (and anyone else struggling) our Church will be running Warmth cafés where you can find for a cuppa, hot food, company and just to be warm during the day. I’m planning to go as I wfh so it will be nice to have company. We also have a fund of financial gifts for those who are struggling.

It sounds like you’re not near me but have a look in case any Churches /Mosques etc are offering the same, I don’t think we’re unique.

Glad that we’re doing something to help but just horrific that you and others are in this situation.

my late mum had brittle asthma, copd, damp /mould allergies and 40% lung function from spinal collapse due to osteoporosis (foot m from the oral steroids that kept her above so many years). No way she’d have survived this.

thelobsterquadrille · 17/11/2022 09:13

16 degrees in here this morning. Definitely doesn't feel that cold though!

GasPanic · 17/11/2022 09:28

Varies quite a lot in the house.

The lowest I've had in the living areas this year is 13.8, but I wouldn't spend any time in a room at that temperature unless it was a bedroom.

Rooms I am in (home office during the day) or the living room at night I like to keep at a minimum of 16.

Humidity has been more of a problem. Seems to be hovering from 65-70. I don't get any condensation on the windows and am careful about not pumping water into the atmosphere, but I think I will be purchasing a dehumidifier on Black Friday.

BeyondThinkOfTheOptics · 17/11/2022 10:35

Right now it's 17.6'c in my living room, and the heating has not been on at all yet. Was about 16'c when I got up.

I’m so sorry you are suffering this. Your asthma is worse than mine and I would really struggle at those temperatures. This situation in a modern, rich country is depressing and makes me angry. There is always enough money for the things the establishment wants to spend on, but never enough to meet the needs of ordinary people. Could you manage to just heat one room and stay in there until the weather improves again?

B1993 · 17/11/2022 11:19

We have our thermostat set to 20.0, except for overnight when we’re all in bed and don’t mind if it’s cooler. I have a toddler so need it to be warm.
