Anyone signed up for this? Payments for shifting your energy use away from peak times/within a given timeslot each day.

The bonus points seem to be added when you click to go through to your Octopoints page. I have about £5 on the page with the table but £7.50 on my octopoints page.

@gingercat02 are you usually out around 5-6? If so you won’t be saving much if you aren’t usually using much at that time normally anyway.

BarbaraofSeville · 06/12/2022 13:01

So they are @Flapjackquack

I have a whole £2.02 worth.

But it's all for the greater good, getting the heavy hitters to stop doing or do at a different time whatever it is they do to use so much and put pressure on the grid. We're not particularly light users, all our cooking is electric, as is our shower, so our electricity use is above the amount the price cap is based on, we just must it at different times.

Flapjackquack · 06/12/2022 13:14

@BarbaraofSeville - our energy consumption is around £2,000 a year at current rates but 65% of that is probably between 5-7pm weekdays! Finishing work at 5-5.30, heating on for an hour to warm up from being out, phones on to charge, dinner is made (electric), sometimes dishwasher on, bath time for toddler, maybe a bit of TV. So we aren’t heavy users on average but we are at peak times. Adjusting our schedule a bit means we’ve saved lots but I can see it’s frustrating if you aren’t able to save much in these saving hours.

tribpot · 06/12/2022 13:49

I've got 100 extra points when I look on the Octopoints page, but should have 300 I think, for each of the sessions after the first one.

NewBootsAndRanty · 06/12/2022 13:51

Same @tribpot .

Flapjackquack · 06/12/2022 14:32

Mine is only 100 points extra too but should be more for the other sessions and extra points as I was in the top 10% of savers first time or something.

NewBootsAndRanty · 08/12/2022 17:59

Looks like mine has all caught up - my Octopoints page shows 2484 points (£3.10), and my savings sessions page says I've earned 2184 during the sessions, so that makes an extra 3 x 100 points for the 3 streaks.

Yes, I'm up-to-date too

Flapjackquack · 09/12/2022 10:14

I wonder if Octopus are using this thread to see what they need to do 😂

Brogues · 09/12/2022 12:31

Mine is all up to date now too. My totals are very low because we’re not heavy users at that time generally. Although we’ve switched off lights and just watched one TV it shows me we are doing all we can and it was fun to do/gets us prepared in case we need to do it for real.

I suppose it gives Octopus that data of whether they need many thousands of low users making small changes or if a handful of heavy users need to take more drastic action as well as making us all think about our usage and how we can shift and reduce.

WhatCanWeDoNext · 11/12/2022 11:23

According to Twitter, National Grid ESO have done a test notification this morning. Update to follow 2:30pm. So maybe a savings session tomorrow??

WhatCanWeDoNext · 11/12/2022 11:23

Unless they cancel of course…

BarbaraofSeville · 11/12/2022 12:19

Well demand must be pretty high at the moment, lots of supplementary electric heating plus what people normally use. Plus extra dehumidifier and tumble dryers for washing. More Christmas lights on, people doing Christmas baking and peak hot food and drink.

WhatCanWeDoNext · 11/12/2022 15:17

I follow this lady on Twitter who seems to know what she’s talking about (as far as I can tell anyway!) and she says there’s a test request for tomorrow. Sarah Go Green

Ah yes, this is where she's getting her info from: data.nationalgrideso.com/dfs/demand-flexibility-service-test-events/r/dfs_service_requirement_-_test

It looks like it would be a longer test and with the aim of saving more mega-watts as well.

Nothing showing on the Octopus app yet, but hopefully we will hear soon if it's going ahead.

Next Saving Session now up on the website

Thanks for the heads up @tribpot !

Pinkflipflop85 · 11/12/2022 18:11

Thanks for the heads up. I'd had no notification for this one!

NewBootsAndRanty · 11/12/2022 18:16

Same, although my notifications tend to come up quite late the night before the session.

OP posts:
tribpot · 11/12/2022 18:18

Yeah, I think the notification will appear later, the app/website often has the info first.

froginawell · 11/12/2022 18:20

I've booked in! Bit nervous about a 2 hour session...

chocolateasaltyballs22 · 11/12/2022 18:23

I feel like they're taking the piss a bit now. I've only ever got about 50p per session. Why would I put myself out for that?

gingercat02 · 11/12/2022 18:37

Ive opted in but that's a difficult one. We usually eat around 7 and I'm at work until 5 so there will have to be some one pan wonder action. DS has football training from 5:50-6:50 (assuming it's not called off for ice) so no PlayStation so that's a bonus.

WhatCanWeDoNext · 11/12/2022 18:46

Cheers @tribpot.

Do we think they’re building us up to the full three hour session that was going to be the potential blackouts? If enough Octopus/Eon/whoever-else’s customers voluntarily cut back, would it be the equivalent of blacking out one region?

tribpot · 11/12/2022 19:11

@WhatCanWeDoNext from the National Grid's info about the Demand Flexibility Service

Live events are likely to last for a longer period if they are needed and could run up to 3-4 hours each. These are most likely to be held late afternoon/ early evening on weekdays when demand for electricity is highest.
