Not a side hustle as such but whenever I buy something online I used Top Cashback so far have nearly £180 cashback over three months. It’s made up mostly of cashback on Things like cashback on RAC and annual insurance renewals so essentials.

The long-running earn a tenner a day threads have lots of ideas and some posters have gone from nothing to basically earning a living from doing "bits and bobs" mainly from home. Appen, Lionbridge, Crisp thinking moderation, well-psying surveys like Prolific etc. A couple use matched betting as well.

ZooTropia · 18/10/2022 08:39

We all need a matched betting buddy!! Someone to mentor newbies!!

PAFMO · 18/10/2022 08:40

@SarahR2022 thank YOU for explaining matched betting. I had a look off the back of the tenner threads but never dived in. Might have another look!
Good luck with your search!

It's hard to believe that any sort of betting doesn't end up with you as the loser. That's the point of betting.

If you read into it you'll understand why it works. You use your own money to bet on one outcome, say - "leeds to win" and use the money provided by a special offer elsewhere to cover the other outcomes. Eg "Leeds to lose or draw"

The software tells you how much to bet at each so you literally cannot end up down.

And every gambler inflates their wins adding up their winnings, and ignoring their losses. So always take with a pinch of salt.

Maybe you should find out what matched betting is before you make silly statements.

If you follow the guide to the letter you do not have any losses with matched betting

LivMumsnet · 18/10/2022 10:29

Morning all. We've had a few reports about the thread and we're going to take it down while we check behind the scenes.

katmeouws · 18/10/2022 10:34

Moths to the flame imo

PAFMO · 18/10/2022 11:23

Don't see how this thread is any different to the tenner a day or the squillions of matched betting threads there have been over the years. Hey ho.

Bit strange that the OP asking about side incomes suddenly turns into an expert on matched betting isn't it?????

antelopevalley · 18/10/2022 11:31

Matched betting is a way to pull people into gambling. Do people really think they keep getting offers that cover the full cost of the bet? Gambling addiction is at an all-time high.

Exactly. The betting firms offer the initial offers/discounts to get people sucked into gambling. They prey on the vulnerable, desperate and gullible.

Scarecrowrowboat · 18/10/2022 12:08

Matched betting worked well for me. Made 1k on the initial offers and then got out as it was too time consuming grinding out small offers and casino offers.

SunThroughTheCloudsAt6am · 18/10/2022 12:17

The offers are to pull you in. The point is you're doing it over multiple books to avoid the bonus restrictions and to a plan that mathematically guarantees a payout.

It is a lot of work, and they will eventually detect the bonus abuse, but it'll work for a while, and you need to understand that it's not 'gambling' in the way that buying a lottery ticket/just betting is, it's more like simultaneously buying and selling an item and retaining the difference between the prices (just like the stock market really).

But yes, the books can see that you're not betting for fun, but with a plan, and they aren't interested in those customers, they want people who will consistently lose a bit of money every month.

Freelance eyelash extension technician. Don’t laugh, but I am paying for my DS to attend an elite private school with the money I make from it.

(Genuinely not bragging. He had some SEN so needs the extra help).

I am sure some people get pulled into gambling but many do not. I have never been tempted to do any betting other than matched betting and, belonging to a few forums about matched betting, I know many others are the same.

Again, maybe you should find out what exactly matched betting is before you dismiss it.

I run a business doing beauty / aesthetics and have considered doing lashes as well. but tbh assumed the market was saturated as every second post on local pages seems to be people advertising they do lashes. And every post that asks for lash tech recommendations gets hundreds of comments

Do you find you get a lot of work ?

Scautish · 18/10/2022 12:25

thats why the bookies dont like it

have a think about that statement……

why would the bookies do something they don’t like? That loses them money?

Of course they don’t - this is how they get new customers. Now of course there are some of you, like you OP, who will be able to simply use the free money and get out whole. But the only reason that the bookies do this is so that the can hook in all the others.

It is absolutely reckless to promote this as safe, as for many it will be the cause of misery.

Sindonym · 18/10/2022 12:28

Lol at people not understanding matched betting. It isn’t betting - there is no risk. I used a website that told me exactly what to do on which bets and made some decent money from it. I stopped because I had a really slow computer and it was taking me forever.

Sindonym · 18/10/2022 12:31

And in the time I was doing matched betting I never once placed a ‘real’ bet (ie one where I might have lost some money). I just sat with the website plodding along.

But there IS the risk that people get sucked into real betting. That's what the book-makers are hoping for.

Some people are more gullible, vulnerable, or desperate, and they'd be best to keep well away from any kind of gambling.

Just the same as to why there are strict restrictions/prohibitions on advertising alcoholic drinks, smoking tobacco, drug taking, etc. Lots of people are responsible and don't get hooked, but enough people DO get hooked, and controls/protections/warnings are needed to protect them!

I would think by far the majority won't get sucked into real betting. For an awful lot of people this is a real money earner

antelopevalley · 18/10/2022 12:42

Problem gambling has soared. Free bets are offered because it does get people into gambling. It works.
