Thought we could share what is good and what isn't to avoid others wasting money!
So far I have tried...

Fishcakes - not great
Salted peanuts - wayyyy to salted.
crisp - quite nice
tiny potato balls - very nice
Fishfingers - edible
Garlic baguette - nice

Anything you would or wouldn't recommend?

Not sure about Asda but the M&S Baked beans are 40p per tin and incredible. Highly recommend them.

SpinningFloppa · 21/09/2022 16:51

Never tried it, how is it any different from any other shops basic range out of interest? Just wondering as everyone seems to be going crazy for it but we don’t have a local Asda it’s too far to travel to.

StrikeandRobin · 21/09/2022 16:51

We were subbed the chocolate chip cookies for the completely different type of biscuits we had ordered. Meant to send them back (along with the scrappy essentials bacon we were subbed!) but forgot, DH has now opened them and said they are quite nice.

Teen didn’t like the essentials frozen pizza at all.

OooohAhhhh · 21/09/2022 16:51

The pure orange from concentrate for 0.62p I found is very watery. I wouldn't buy it again.
The chicken curry is nice tho.

Summerishere123 · 21/09/2022 16:58

@SpinningFloppa I don't think it is any different to other budget range brands. The branding on it is being criticised for being too loud and highlighting peoples poverty which is why it has been in the media.

I forgot to add their beans and spaghetti hoops are okay too.

I’ve seen some TikToks of people cooking the two quid steaks and they actually look pretty good

We also have no Asda nearby so I won’t be trying it
PP I think it’s getting a lot of attention as most supermarkets don’t really do the ‘value ranges’ like they used to? I remember all the horrible white/blue/red Tesco value range back in the day

sheepandcaravan · 21/09/2022 17:02

Cream cheese nice, no different to usual.

Apple juice, good.

Tinned kidney beans, fine for bulking things out.

Carrots fine if kept in fridge.

Apples, good.

Natural yogurt, lovely, I also use this for flat breads, so handy to have.

Harrystylestutu · 21/09/2022 17:09

The big mature cheddar and red Leicester are really good.
those garlic bread and potato balls are great.
my Dh and son don't like the orange squash
the diet lemonade is good.
my son likes the macaroni cheese ready meal.
my pork chops look like ones we used to get from the butchers (quite a lot of rind)
everyone's complaining about the toilet roll but I buy it and im not changing it 😂

StrikeandRobin · 21/09/2022 17:09

@pinok I read a thread earlier that said they were nice, they went to buy more and they have now gone up to £6!

SaintVal · 21/09/2022 17:13

My DS7 on the Asda essentials chocolate and hazelnut spread: "Mum, I like this knock-off Nutella" 🙈😂

I love them too!

Inchysaurus · 21/09/2022 17:17

I have found the fresh fruit and veg generally fine and no difference in taste/longevity compared with the normal range

PuttingDownRoots · 21/09/2022 17:18

Cooked chicken breast in the sandwich meat section.

We either put it in sandwiches/wraps or if doing a quick stir fry etc when camping. We got it before the rebranding.

Frozen Yorkshire puddings are delicious!

fortheloveofcheesecake · 21/09/2022 17:27

Good....
Peanut butter, natural yogurt, garlic bread, cheese, crisps, cheese and tomato pizza okay with extra toppings, cookies, frozen potato balls, lemonade, juice, apples, baked Beans, toilet roll.

That's all we've tried so far and been happy with it all! Will be trying other things from the range...depending on stock which is sometimes a bit low.

Techno56 · 21/09/2022 17:28

The battered fish fillets are really nice (I was surprised)

The minced beef and onion pies are not. Thought we'd give them a try though haha.

scrufffy · 21/09/2022 17:32

I didn't like the pure orange from concentrate but the apple juice was fine.

Garlic bread was grand.

scrufffy · 21/09/2022 17:33

Dd loved the curry sauce. (The one you add to chicken etc) v like from a Chinese take away she thought.

Overthebow · 22/09/2022 12:35

the garlic bread is good, and the mini 45p pizzas (fresh, not frozen).

The strawberry jam is quite nice, as is the yoghurts.

ScarlettSunset · 22/09/2022 19:50

I don't usually have an Asda anywhere near me, but there was one near where I stayed on holiday. I bought the mayo as they didn't have my usual brand, and I really liked it. Probably not to everyone's taste but I enjoyed it. I'd switch to it permanently if I had an Asda nearby.

Willowwarble · 24/09/2022 15:25

Washing powder v good, but never in stock. Hot chocolate amazing, I think rebranded Galaxy from a taste match test. Weetabix I really like. Had a quiche yesterday, much the same as any other shop bought one. Chocolate digestives individually wrapped -good. Natural yoghurt, fine as is Cornish pasty.

witchesbubblebath · 24/09/2022 15:28

The £2 steak was good.

witchesbubblebath · 24/09/2022 15:29

The 40p pine toilet cleaner is brilliant.

Plump82 · 24/09/2022 15:34

I was in Asda today and hoped to try some more stuff to see if it was worth it and was surprised there was barely anything in the range in my local store. It wasn't that it was even out of stock, they just didn't seem to do much in the range. I have however been using the soya milk which is something like 50p and it's fine, no difference to more expensive brands and froths nicely if that's your thing.
