Follow on from the old thread

This is a space / long running thread for people wanting tips on making life cheaper for what ever reason and support who have to make living less expensive. If you are new here just post away everyone is welcome.

Frugal tips from the hive mind so far....

Check your outgoing-are they essential, are you on the best deal
Loyalty cards for stores you regularly shop at
Meal plan
Annual budget rather than monthly for those, well annual, expenses
Second hand is fine for 90% of stuff
Sign up to money saving expert emails
Insulation at home.
Close curtains at dark and tuck behind rads
Foil behind external wall rad
Turn the heating down . Tropical houses are not necessary
Use the washing line when you can
Look out for food recycling scheme- bread and butter thing, company shop, too good to go type things
Do you have to buy that Christmas/ birthday present. Can you give time instead
Eat less meat (tho I’m rubbish at this)
Have a on toast day. Or baked potato weekly
Double up while the oven is on for a reheat meal or a bake. Save electric running the oven less.
Branded goods are not always the best
-Walk those short trips if possible, instead of using the car (I am the worst for doing this). Saves petrol, good exercise too.
-Combine car trips better too eg dropped DD off at an activity tonight, which is next to the supermarket.
Cancel sky, if you still want the programmes switch to Now Tv for a fraction of the price
Cancel any subscriptions you don't need. Check direct debits to make sure you're not paying for anything you no longer need by accident
Check all your bills, insurances etc are the cheapest you can get for the cover you need (the last bit is important)
If you can get a voucher, use a cash back site or have some sort of work discount (nhs, bluelight, Tesco, student etc) check before paying
Meal plan before you shop. Make extra to freeze for another day as it's often cheaper per kg to buy bigger packs of meat
Go veggie a couple of times a week
Aldi and Lidl are great but not if you're going to get sidetracked by the aisle of doom
An annual budget is essential but pay yourself first each month so money into the annual pot, into savings, off debt before anything else happens. Make sure there's a line in your budget for fun money even if it's a tiny amount, budgeting can be a grind otherwise
You will have patches of spendiness and demotivation, don't give up just start again from wherever you end up
Take your own drinks, snacks, food, picnic - Invariably cheaper and nicer
Make your own if you have a stocked baking cupboard and spice cupboard. Cheaper and nicer, tho building said cupboard can be ££ (costs can be reduced by a visit to your local international supermarket)
Aldi for baking stuff it’s fine.
Work out of season for clothes as it’s usually cheaper
i switched to a coffee subscription (coffee is my weakness) - so our local shop delivers me a 250g bag of ground coffee every 2 weeks (i have 4 in the cupboard currently) and i make my own morning coffee. the subscription is for 6 months and costs me £58 i think. a takeaway from the same shop is £2.80 a pop. so it is a money saver. I bought a Contigo cup (spendy but worth every penny). so take my coffee hot to work with me.

I'm also a fan of using it up. so tings like toiletries, stationary (i am also a notebook hoarder) food etc. not replacing until it's all gone (or all of one thing gone).

my Lloyds account does "save the change" so it rounds up a purchase and then moves the pence to my savings account.

I also pay myself first on payday and am trying to use the things we have- zoo membership - use it loads so worth the £160 a year cost. same with my gym membership i use it so get my moneys worth.

Also what you can save/be frugal on can be inversely related to your means. If you have more "spare" money per month it's easier to buy in bulk and choose things that are cheapest per kg. If you have less or no spare money this isn't possible to do and then you're looking at cheapest price per item rather than per kg.

Agree re taking own stuff although I do often forget but a good coffee cup and water bottle is a good investment if you can afford it

If you have a dog use something like all about dog food to work out what the best food is you can buy based on what you can afford to spend per day
I also give the clothes an extra spin in the washing machine before they go in the dryer, and dry outside whenever i can - currently not living at home, so limited to a washer dryer (which is crap) and an airer next to a rad which i hate.

im a big fan of using the freezer and freeze anything i can. we buy reduced items (like bread and keep it in the freezer as it saves it going off - we maybe get through a loaf every couple of weeks).
I know that credit cards are sometimes seen here as the work of the devil (on MN specifically not this thread) but if you have one use to to your advantage. Mine gives me money back in the form of M&S or amazon vouchers every quarter depending on how much I've spent. and as long as you pay it off every month it works.
Top Cashback for all internet purchases.
Join the library - many have free access to Audible, Libby (for magazines and newspapers) as well as having an amazing selection of books.
Consider how you cook things - residual heat cooking works really well for rice and any slow cooker recipe.
Grow herbs and salad leaves on a window sill
Grow soft fruit - your local allotment / neighbours with a raspberry cane/ strawberry / current / gooseberry will be more than happy to give you a cutting.
Look for local food pantries
If you need credit use a Credit Union. If you are saving support your local credit union by becoming one of their savers.

Unescorted - he's doing graphic design, and enjoying it, along with everything else about his life there. I'm so pleased for him, as he took a while to decide HE was for him. And yes, I do have some nice pieces around (including a carving he did at the Building Crafts College one summer).

And come the autumn, the hostas wouldn't even register the disturbance. They are amazing, and well worth the attritional war against slugs.

What's frog swallowing? Like something horrible you don't want to do ?

TheNewlmprovedMrsMadEvans · 28/04/2022 21:15

Unescorted thank you l will take your advice and plant it up Smile. Oh yes, l did get a refund & they told me to keep it , why am l not surprised they didn't want it returned GrinGrin
@HalfWomanHalfChocolate you have been warned lol
Hope your DD's hearing is ok Flowers
Have just spent 15 on Funky pidgen , appparently if you prepay then you get 25% added to your total so l had 18.75 for the £15 .l have just sorted out 4 cards in advance for birthdays and Fathers day and found a 40% off 4 cards codes as well so l think that is pretty good , 4 cards personalised and delivered for 8.58 which considering the stamps are 95p l thought was very good value Smile
I like using them because l can organise the cards in advance & not worry about forgetting about them Grin

Uninspiredusername · 28/04/2022 22:27

Evening all - bit of a spendy day with not much to show for it 🤦🏻‍♀️ Took my DC for his covid vaccine and promised a McDonald’s after, then went for a couple of drinks with mates so all in all, about £25. Going out for dinner with DH tomorrow so imagine that will add up. Eating out has become such a luxury!!

Unescorted · 29/04/2022 07:15

Mrs you are so organised. I think I will have to look at doing things like preordering cards. You have given me an idea..... remember the boxes of assorted cards that you could get. All really cheesy and poor quality. I am going to make a nice version of that. I might make some (like the Christmas tags) and buy some to have mix.

And whoever (sorry having a vague day today) mentioned the gift spreadsheet that is genius on so many levels.

Big It is lovely to have things of theirs about the house. DD has made me a gallery that I can see from my desk and another to be in the back ground of my Teams calls. It makes me smile everyday.

I was just looking at one of the neighbour dispute threads..... do not take legal advice off MN. Even my non legal mind realised it was a load of made up nonsense.

Decafflatteplease · 29/04/2022 10:57

I also agree the gift spreadsheet is a fab idea!

We tend to buy presents as we see them and stash them away but invariably I forget what I've got etc so some sort of list sounds fab.

Was hoping for a nsd day today but need to pay for yet another school trip, and have also just ordered a new water bottle as ds has outgrown his he needs a bigger one, plus a hot water bottle for me as in the kind for a tummy ache, plus some cloth pull ups for potty training toddler but to be fair it's real nappy week this week so they were 20percent off. Still £50 for all that together!

Just checked the bank, thought we were doing pretty well then relaosed the mortgage hasn't gone out yet 😱

marthasmum · 29/04/2022 13:44

mrs thanks also for the prepay tip. I do get cards there but usually last minute, despite having a list of birthdays I’m never on top of it! I like their cards for people that I can’t afford to add to my present list, but want to remember - it feels like a bit more than a normal card doesn’t it?
also liking the gift spreadsheet but I’m not sure I’m that organised.
quieter week than usual at work which has been most welcome.

TheNewlmprovedMrsMadEvans · 29/04/2022 15:41

Ahh you are welcome Unescorted & Martha yes l agree it's more than just a card it's special because you have taken the time to personalise it for the recipient. Also l am fed up of buying cards and losing them and them getting messed about before l use them Hmm
I have to do Mums cards and presents for everybody as well as my own so l need to be organised trouble is l don't alwaya take my own advice Hmm
Aldi 22 , various bits and bobs , going to have an Indian tonight though being as it is pay day yay!

WreckTangled · 29/04/2022 15:42

£27 new towels
£90 Tesco
£10 lidl
£51 fuel and a red bull

CurlsandCurves · 29/04/2022 17:40

Payday today. And a woohoo moment as I transferred the money and hit my savings goal! It’s so good to know it’s there and if anything really bad happened we’d be ok for a few months. It’s the equivalent to 5 months of the household bills ( not including food). Might change my mind and go for a nice round 6 months.

But my next immediate goal which won’t take long at all is to have a £500 buffer in my current account. So I’ll never let it go below that. Then I’ll start working on my pension.

Small top up shop of bread and I got the jackpot and actually found iceberg lettuce! Honestly they’ve been like gold dust around here, you just can’t get them. I was so excited I bought 2!

lifelongfrugaleer · 29/04/2022 18:40

Payday here too and pay cut thanks NI increase

Gensola · 29/04/2022 19:47

life we have both had a pay cut too. I’m raging if I’m honest and I’m also facing the student loan interest hike to 12%. So angry!!

Unescorted · 29/04/2022 20:26

Gen The student loan interest increase is awful. It is no longer a "tax" but a proper debt that grows in real terms. It is going to make going to uni difficult for those that don't have the family money.

Curls nice going.

Decaff go to a cycling event. They give water bottles away. We have a cupboard full of giveaways.

95P on mushrooms. I wanted a mint Areo but they are too bloody expensive in the local shop. We’re going into town tomorrow so I’ll get one in the discount store. DH went to a trade show, no idea how much he spent in petrol etc.

AdoraBell · 29/04/2022 22:10

I keep a list for presents on my phone, just change the year once Christmas is over. I’ve bought one thing for DD1 and made a start on stocking fillers. I have an idea what to get for DD2, I’ll buy that next month.

HalfWomanHalfChocolate · 29/04/2022 23:49

I keep a present list on my phone but I don’t note WHERE I HID THEM. This has resulted in my sisters getting their (very small jewellery) gifts many months late . And I still haven’t found two books I bought for DH for Christmas 😂

Today has been spendy - school was closed so we took the DC to an amusement park, tickets were about £52 but we took a picnic. Glad we did it though - it was really quiet and no queues for the rides at all! I was knackered as I was up working till 4am (short notice deadline for this arvo but was going to be out all day so had to work through the night 😬). i was also freezing when I got back so I went to bed and napped for 3 hours, then woke up in time for a Thai takeaway, £26. We don’t get them often, honestly I mostly prefer my own cooking and they are so expensive (that was 2x main, 1 x rice). But it was decent and I appreciated not cooking.

oh, also £30 sponsorship to a fellow parent doing a tricky sporty thing - it’s for UNICEF’s Ukraine appeal so a donation really - and £30 for tickets for a PTA event. No wonder money just evaporates!

HalfWomanHalfChocolate · 29/04/2022 23:54

Oh, and £60 to the cleaner for 4 hours. However, she should have still been here when we got back and wasn’t - Ringo doorbell camera showed she left after 3 hours. We don’t pay the cheapest rates so I’m a bit narked - and there’s always plenty to do. I don't want to sound petty but I think I will say something.

AdoraBell · 30/04/2022 00:36

He spent £38, no idea how much petrol.

WreckTangled · 30/04/2022 07:39

We haven't got any plans this weekend. Can't really afford to do anything and it'll be half term again in a few weeks.

I've been tempted to look for a new job, even though I'm halfway through a fully funded foundation degree, morale and wages in the NHS are ⬇️⬇️⬇️

ememem84 · 30/04/2022 07:53

£39 yesterday - headlights and indicator light for the car. The garage fitted them too. So money well spent.

I set up a regular saver account this week. So every month just after payday £100 will go in. This will top up my pension.

took kids to the adventure park yesterday. We have a membership so it was free. Yay. Spent a couple of hours on soft play and outdoor things.

in other news my assistant resigned yesterday. I’m not heartbroken about this.

lifelongfrugaleer · 30/04/2022 08:06

Nsd yesterday
jobs day today and relaxed bh. Might fettle the garden
need to finish job app plan for stable event next week

lifelongfrugaleer · 30/04/2022 08:07

Oh £33 for 3 months wi type thing but not wi

ememem84 · 30/04/2022 08:28

Bank holiday weekend no 1 here. We also get one next weekend. Yay!

im going to bake something this weekend. Because I haven’t yet in my new oven.

Decafflatteplease · 30/04/2022 08:56

@CurlsandCurves that's amazing about your savings well done you! And a £500 buffer sounds fab too

. Our goal is to get less than £900 overdrawn as that's what the bank have asked for. God that sounds awful written down! We obviously are well out of it on payday but by around 10 days before the next payday we are very overdrawn

@HalfWomanHalfChocolate that's a shame about your cleaner is this the first time?
Not sure if you saw my reply the other day but DC and I both have a hearing loss if you want to chat etc

So, should be a nsd today. Apart from £130 on ocado but I think that's already gone out overnight so not actually today. We spend around £200 a week on food shopping plus school dinners etc I really want to get it down but due to disabled dc it's hard...food restrictions and avoidance etc

Visiting in-laws today so shouldn't spend anything. Having dinner there

WreckTangled · 30/04/2022 09:20

Decaf can you discuss with the bank reducing the overdraft slowly over the next few months? Maybe on pay day or something? I think that's how I got rid of mine but I did it online myself, this was years ago though so things might be different now.

CurlsandCurves · 30/04/2022 09:33

@Decafflatteplease i paid off my £2k overdraft but by not, similar to how @WreckTangled is suggesting. It’s not easy to get your head around coz it’s like saving in reverse isn’t it? And it’s not easy to see the progress because you are still needing the overdraft. You’ll get there I’m sure x

At home today, dh and ds1 are at work. NSD for me, windows open and lots of cleaning with music up loud. Working tomorrow and Monday but it should be good because there’s an arts event in our town and we’ve got a local artist in residence in our shop for it. Hoping for lots of customers!
