Follow on from the old thread

This is a space / long running thread for people wanting tips on making life cheaper for what ever reason and support who have to make living less expensive. If you are new here just post away everyone is welcome.

Frugal tips from the hive mind so far....

Check your outgoing-are they essential, are you on the best deal
Loyalty cards for stores you regularly shop at
Meal plan
Annual budget rather than monthly for those, well annual, expenses
Second hand is fine for 90% of stuff
Sign up to money saving expert emails
Insulation at home.
Close curtains at dark and tuck behind rads
Foil behind external wall rad
Turn the heating down . Tropical houses are not necessary
Use the washing line when you can
Look out for food recycling scheme- bread and butter thing, company shop, too good to go type things
Do you have to buy that Christmas/ birthday present. Can you give time instead
Eat less meat (tho I’m rubbish at this)
Have a on toast day. Or baked potato weekly
Double up while the oven is on for a reheat meal or a bake. Save electric running the oven less.
Branded goods are not always the best
-Walk those short trips if possible, instead of using the car (I am the worst for doing this). Saves petrol, good exercise too.
-Combine car trips better too eg dropped DD off at an activity tonight, which is next to the supermarket.
Cancel sky, if you still want the programmes switch to Now Tv for a fraction of the price
Cancel any subscriptions you don't need. Check direct debits to make sure you're not paying for anything you no longer need by accident
Check all your bills, insurances etc are the cheapest you can get for the cover you need (the last bit is important)
If you can get a voucher, use a cash back site or have some sort of work discount (nhs, bluelight, Tesco, student etc) check before paying
Meal plan before you shop. Make extra to freeze for another day as it's often cheaper per kg to buy bigger packs of meat
Go veggie a couple of times a week
Aldi and Lidl are great but not if you're going to get sidetracked by the aisle of doom
An annual budget is essential but pay yourself first each month so money into the annual pot, into savings, off debt before anything else happens. Make sure there's a line in your budget for fun money even if it's a tiny amount, budgeting can be a grind otherwise
You will have patches of spendiness and demotivation, don't give up just start again from wherever you end up
Take your own drinks, snacks, food, picnic - Invariably cheaper and nicer
Make your own if you have a stocked baking cupboard and spice cupboard. Cheaper and nicer, tho building said cupboard can be ££ (costs can be reduced by a visit to your local international supermarket)
Aldi for baking stuff it’s fine.
Work out of season for clothes as it’s usually cheaper
i switched to a coffee subscription (coffee is my weakness) - so our local shop delivers me a 250g bag of ground coffee every 2 weeks (i have 4 in the cupboard currently) and i make my own morning coffee. the subscription is for 6 months and costs me £58 i think. a takeaway from the same shop is £2.80 a pop. so it is a money saver. I bought a Contigo cup (spendy but worth every penny). so take my coffee hot to work with me.

I'm also a fan of using it up. so tings like toiletries, stationary (i am also a notebook hoarder) food etc. not replacing until it's all gone (or all of one thing gone).

my Lloyds account does "save the change" so it rounds up a purchase and then moves the pence to my savings account.

I also pay myself first on payday and am trying to use the things we have- zoo membership - use it loads so worth the £160 a year cost. same with my gym membership i use it so get my moneys worth.

Also what you can save/be frugal on can be inversely related to your means. If you have more "spare" money per month it's easier to buy in bulk and choose things that are cheapest per kg. If you have less or no spare money this isn't possible to do and then you're looking at cheapest price per item rather than per kg.

Agree re taking own stuff although I do often forget but a good coffee cup and water bottle is a good investment if you can afford it

If you have a dog use something like all about dog food to work out what the best food is you can buy based on what you can afford to spend per day
I also give the clothes an extra spin in the washing machine before they go in the dryer, and dry outside whenever i can - currently not living at home, so limited to a washer dryer (which is crap) and an airer next to a rad which i hate.

im a big fan of using the freezer and freeze anything i can. we buy reduced items (like bread and keep it in the freezer as it saves it going off - we maybe get through a loaf every couple of weeks).
I know that credit cards are sometimes seen here as the work of the devil (on MN specifically not this thread) but if you have one use to to your advantage. Mine gives me money back in the form of M&S or amazon vouchers every quarter depending on how much I've spent. and as long as you pay it off every month it works.
Top Cashback for all internet purchases.
Join the library - many have free access to Audible, Libby (for magazines and newspapers) as well as having an amazing selection of books.
Consider how you cook things - residual heat cooking works really well for rice and any slow cooker recipe.
Grow herbs and salad leaves on a window sill
Grow soft fruit - your local allotment / neighbours with a raspberry cane/ strawberry / current / gooseberry will be more than happy to give you a cutting.
Look for local food pantries
If you need credit use a Credit Union. If you are saving support your local credit union by becoming one of their savers.

Afternoon everyine hope you have this glorious weather too Smile
Bought a Chromebook for Dd2 for her birthday from Amazon £129.99
Also just bought 2 x tubs of Dreamies for the cats this is 720g for a total of £7.65 using subscribe & save discount , the normal pkts have 60 g in them and they cost at least a pound . So by my reckoning these are 12 pkts for £7.65 instead of at least £12 . So that is a great saving , l cancel the S& S immediately l have had a delivery so that l can get any discount vouchers again , l do this a lot on S&S Smile
Petrol 192.9 a litre and Diesel 199.9 a litre locally Hmm

Decafflatteplease · 21/06/2022 17:03

mrsevans that sounds like good frugaleering with the subscribe and save

em are you cutting down your hours or just shifting them around? So will you lose money?

I had a fab frugal find today, I've been looking for a longline cardigan for while now I wear them all the time but could do with a new one....found a lovely one in the charity shop for £3.49 so well pleased with that!

Also some books I had on my kindle wishlist were reduced so I got them and going to enjoy starting one in the bath later with a g and t! Kindle is waterproof btw!

£180 electric survey. The good news is we don’t need a rewrite but we need some remedial work quite urgently
phew and grr

CurlsandCurves · 22/06/2022 11:33

Phew at the electric survey @lifelongfrugaleer sounds like it could have been worse.

Well, today is proving to be expensive so far. The air con in the car hasn’t worked for ages we kept putting off getting it fixed. Anyway last night decided to bite the bullet, booked in and took it down this morning. £59.99.

The garage have rung to say it’s been regassed but still not blowing cold. So now we are a further £80 down the line to get it on the diagnostic machine to find out why it’s still not working.

DH is very good with cars so I’m hoping that whatever it needs he can do himself and save us a load more money. Fingers crossed.

CurlsandCurves · 22/06/2022 12:33

2 loads of washing line dried by midday.

I may be losing money on my car but I’d say this more than makes up for it. Winning!

lifelongfrugaleer · 22/06/2022 18:03

Will they take the fee for diagnostic off any work?
win win on the washing

CurlsandCurves · 22/06/2022 18:39

@lifelongfrugaleer no it’s a standard fee. To be fair they kept me informed all the way through.
Ended up paying £300. £60 on air con regas £74 on diagnostic £70 ish on the new pressure sensor it needed and £80 on labour. These are rough figures obvs. But it’s done now and I think it would have taken DH all weekend to do the part replacement, along with help from his dad, a lot of swearing and me filing for divorce 😆

lifelongfrugaleer · 22/06/2022 19:42

Sounds like paying the garage is the best move

Happierwithouthim · 22/06/2022 22:50

I started using my credit card again in April, I checked my balance today €1425 Confused
I hadn't used it in years, brought it home took it out of my wallet & put it away in the safe until holidays next month. I took €250 out of savings today & paid that off it & will do a transfer from credit union also & clear it & then increase my standing order to credit union to rebuild my savings. Only thing of consequence on it is holiday flights Shock

Today marks one year anniversary in my new home 🏡 Smile
I need to do an annual overview now to see what the year has cost me & to set up my sinking funds going forward, I've been meaning to do this since January Blush

Tomorrow €65 to morning childminder which brings us up to Tues when dc get their summer holidays Smile
Fri €60 to evening childminder for Thurs/Fri evening
This is end of these two childminders until school returns.
A lovely 21 year old former neighbour is going to mind dc for 5 of the 8 week summer holidays. Their dad will have them for 2 weeks and I'll also take a week off, this leaves me with 7 more days holidays to use after summer & before Christmas, this is most I've had left in years at this point.

Has anyone here removed the laminate from their kitchen & painted the doors?
The laminate is lifting since before I moved it, kitchen approx 15 years old, but it's gotten worse in past couple of weeks. I want to but I'm nervous & wonder about replacing the doors. Kit for repainting is approx €250.

ememem84 · 23/06/2022 07:19

Still haven’t had my expenses. I’ll raise it with our lady if they’re not in my account tomorrow. Suspect she’s done a regular payment instead of a same day one.

@Decafflatteplease im actually hoping to increase my hours. I currently officially do 28 (4 days) if I make the switch as above I’ll do 33 I think which is essentially full time.

haven’t heard back from work on that yet. But they have 28 days to review and come back to me.

im like you @Happierwithouthim I need structure. I’m better when I have like a timetable/routine as such. DH apparently works better in chaos.

im working from home today.

Decafflatteplease · 23/06/2022 07:30

Morning all

Hope you get your answer from work soon em so you can get sorted

happier how kind of your neighbour! And happy house anniversary!

Weve fixed our energy bill, we haven't gone onto the higher rate yet but will do in a few weeks but they e offered us to fix which is higher than we would pay on variable rate but hopefully lower than the coming October price hikes, bit of a gamble but hopefully worth it. We send our usage in each month we are good at keeping on top of that. So bill will go from £125 to £299 😱

I'm wondering if we've made the right choice paying for extra nursery hours from sept. It's going to be an extra £160 a month. I fear it will push us more into the red. But the trade-off is I get more sleep as can sleep in the day (currently barley getting 5 hours broken sleep a night) then and also possibly go to Lidl and aldi more on my child free days rather than relying on ocado. Swings and roundabouts.

No particular plans for today, very hot already. Might pop along to playgroup or more likely play in the garden.

Taytocrisps · 24/06/2022 07:57

Morning everyone. I'm officially on holidays. Yaay! Heading to my Dad's this evening because he lives nearer the airport, so we'll make our way from his house. We're heading to Lanzarote for a week.

I've been working late all week because we're short-staffed and I had to finish off stuff. Got home last night around 8 to discover that DD was still at her friend's house (20 minutes drive away) so I had to head straight there to pick her up. To be fair, I hadn't actually checked how she was getting home - it's been that kind of week!

I've posted on another thread that I rooted out some summer clothes I last wore on a sun holiday in 2019 and they no longer fit! The various lockdowns have done nothing for my waistline 😭. Had to pick up some new clothes at short notice. Annoying that I have some perfectly good clothes but can't wear them. And expensive to replace.

Feeling a bit guilty about abandoning the cats (at the cattery) for the week. They're curled up together having their post-breakfast nap, oblivious to their fate. DCat2 gets quite car sick so I'd planned on giving her just a small bit of cat food for breakfast. But seeing as they woke me before 7, it went totally out of my head. I should have left myself a note.

Anyway, I took your advice about making lists so I've a list of things to do and things to pack.

The Things to Do list reads

  • Set Auto Reply on work e-mails
  • Drop cats off at cattery
  • Empty/clean fridge
  • Water plants
  • Text family member to put out compost bin for collection on Thursday
  • Take out money
  • Clean litter trays
  • Pack
I'll delegate some of the above tasks to DD.

Right, I'd better get moving. Have a good weekend everyone.

Wolfcub · 24/06/2022 08:00

Have a fantastic holiday Tayto

Taytocrisps · 24/06/2022 11:43

Had issues with one of the cat carriers this morning. Last time I used it, one of the clips was a bit stiff and the vet recommended getting a new one. I intended picking one up, but sure, you know yourself..... Anyway, I don't know what possessed it this morning, but I couldn't fasten any of the side clips to secure it. It was like the top and bottom half of the carrier were misaligned and even if I managed to get one clip fastened, it would pop open again as soon as I fastened a clip on the other side. I was so long wrestling with the thing that I ended up missing the morning slot (9-11) for dropping off the cats. I had to drive into the big town (20 minutes away) to buy a new cat carrier. I did about six months of swearing in the space of 10 minutes. Luckily there's an afternoon slot, so I'm aiming to get there as soon as it opens.

Got petrol on the way although it only seems like a few days ago that I filled up.
