Follow on from the old thread

This is a space / long running thread for people wanting tips on making life cheaper for what ever reason and support who have to make living less expensive. If you are new here just post away everyone is welcome.

Frugal tips from the hive mind so far....

Check your outgoing-are they essential, are you on the best deal
Loyalty cards for stores you regularly shop at
Meal plan
Annual budget rather than monthly for those, well annual, expenses
Second hand is fine for 90% of stuff
Sign up to money saving expert emails
Insulation at home.
Close curtains at dark and tuck behind rads
Foil behind external wall rad
Turn the heating down . Tropical houses are not necessary
Use the washing line when you can
Look out for food recycling scheme- bread and butter thing, company shop, too good to go type things
Do you have to buy that Christmas/ birthday present. Can you give time instead
Eat less meat (tho I’m rubbish at this)
Have a on toast day. Or baked potato weekly
Double up while the oven is on for a reheat meal or a bake. Save electric running the oven less.
Branded goods are not always the best
-Walk those short trips if possible, instead of using the car (I am the worst for doing this). Saves petrol, good exercise too.
-Combine car trips better too eg dropped DD off at an activity tonight, which is next to the supermarket.
Cancel sky, if you still want the programmes switch to Now Tv for a fraction of the price
Cancel any subscriptions you don't need. Check direct debits to make sure you're not paying for anything you no longer need by accident
Check all your bills, insurances etc are the cheapest you can get for the cover you need (the last bit is important)
If you can get a voucher, use a cash back site or have some sort of work discount (nhs, bluelight, Tesco, student etc) check before paying
Meal plan before you shop. Make extra to freeze for another day as it's often cheaper per kg to buy bigger packs of meat
Go veggie a couple of times a week
Aldi and Lidl are great but not if you're going to get sidetracked by the aisle of doom
An annual budget is essential but pay yourself first each month so money into the annual pot, into savings, off debt before anything else happens. Make sure there's a line in your budget for fun money even if it's a tiny amount, budgeting can be a grind otherwise
You will have patches of spendiness and demotivation, don't give up just start again from wherever you end up
Take your own drinks, snacks, food, picnic - Invariably cheaper and nicer
Make your own if you have a stocked baking cupboard and spice cupboard. Cheaper and nicer, tho building said cupboard can be ££ (costs can be reduced by a visit to your local international supermarket)
Aldi for baking stuff it’s fine.
Work out of season for clothes as it’s usually cheaper
i switched to a coffee subscription (coffee is my weakness) - so our local shop delivers me a 250g bag of ground coffee every 2 weeks (i have 4 in the cupboard currently) and i make my own morning coffee. the subscription is for 6 months and costs me £58 i think. a takeaway from the same shop is £2.80 a pop. so it is a money saver. I bought a Contigo cup (spendy but worth every penny). so take my coffee hot to work with me.

I'm also a fan of using it up. so tings like toiletries, stationary (i am also a notebook hoarder) food etc. not replacing until it's all gone (or all of one thing gone).

my Lloyds account does "save the change" so it rounds up a purchase and then moves the pence to my savings account.

I also pay myself first on payday and am trying to use the things we have- zoo membership - use it loads so worth the £160 a year cost. same with my gym membership i use it so get my moneys worth.

Also what you can save/be frugal on can be inversely related to your means. If you have more "spare" money per month it's easier to buy in bulk and choose things that are cheapest per kg. If you have less or no spare money this isn't possible to do and then you're looking at cheapest price per item rather than per kg.

Agree re taking own stuff although I do often forget but a good coffee cup and water bottle is a good investment if you can afford it

If you have a dog use something like all about dog food to work out what the best food is you can buy based on what you can afford to spend per day
I also give the clothes an extra spin in the washing machine before they go in the dryer, and dry outside whenever i can - currently not living at home, so limited to a washer dryer (which is crap) and an airer next to a rad which i hate.

im a big fan of using the freezer and freeze anything i can. we buy reduced items (like bread and keep it in the freezer as it saves it going off - we maybe get through a loaf every couple of weeks).
I know that credit cards are sometimes seen here as the work of the devil (on MN specifically not this thread) but if you have one use to to your advantage. Mine gives me money back in the form of M&S or amazon vouchers every quarter depending on how much I've spent. and as long as you pay it off every month it works.
Top Cashback for all internet purchases.
Join the library - many have free access to Audible, Libby (for magazines and newspapers) as well as having an amazing selection of books.
Consider how you cook things - residual heat cooking works really well for rice and any slow cooker recipe.
Grow herbs and salad leaves on a window sill
Grow soft fruit - your local allotment / neighbours with a raspberry cane/ strawberry / current / gooseberry will be more than happy to give you a cutting.
Look for local food pantries
If you need credit use a Credit Union. If you are saving support your local credit union by becoming one of their savers.

Morning everyone.

My lawnmower arrived yesterday (I'd sent it off for repair as it was still under guarantee) so I got to mow the front garden and the strip of grass on the pavement outside my house. The back garden is too long so I'll to have to strim it when I get back from my holidays. The lawnmower they sent me seems to be a brand new one, so I'm guessing they couldn't repair the old one.

My flower border looks really well and nothing has died yet.

Off to see my Dad today, for Father's Day. We're going for a Chinese with my sister and brother. DD is spending the day with Ex.

em hope your day on the beach on Friday made up for that nightmare bedtime.

Decaff I love it when you're contemplating a purchase (in your case, the air fryer) and then it comes down in price.

Alfie well done to your DD for her dissertation grade and fingers crossed for her final grade. Glad the graduation ceremony issue has been resolved and you've a happy event to look forward to. A shame her boyfriend is still in the picture. Good luck sorting out all the mortgage/pension/child trust fund stuff.

BigSkies the flat hunting sounds promising. The work boots are expensive but a very necessary purchase.

So glad you enjoyed your concert Mrs

Curls I'd be raging too if someone had stolen my points. Hope they can sort it out for you.

Wolf Workmen (and I say men 'cos it's mostly men) are just a nightmare. Bet you're sorry you checked out DDog's mouth!

CurlsandCurves · 19/06/2022 09:04

@Wolfcub yuk! But I had to laugh at ‘full knobhead mode’ bless him!

Just enjoying a coffee in peace before work later. I can’t see Sunday opening carrying on to be honest. The boss wanted to try it for a year to give it a proper chance. And that year will be up in September

It’s so up and down and some weeks it’s so boring it’s painful. We just end up cleaning the place from top to bottom. But it’s a nice day so we might get a few people in.

marthasmum · 19/06/2022 09:39

Sorry big meant to say good luck to your parents with the move. Mine are also moving house (ages 80 and 85!) so I appreciate it’s stressful.
wolf how annoying the shower people didn’t turn up!
curls have a good day at work. Will it impact you much if they cancel your Sunday shift?
the garden sounds lovely tayto.
I’m thinking about pensions - which I struggle to engage with. DP has lots of little pensions from various jobs. He’s the PT worker in our house and retires in 7 year so I’m trying to think about maximising them (won’t be much whatever happens!) Has anyone looked at pension consolidation in a similar situation? I’m wondering whether it’s worth asking a financia advisor as presumably they charge a fee. DP says no (this is one reason why I do the money!)

Decafflatteplease · 19/06/2022 10:48

Morning all feeling a bit bluurgh today. Just alot of various stresses especially relating to disabled dc, lots going on etc and it really is a full time job. Although DH is pleased with his lie in, breakfast in bed and presents so wifey points to me 🤣

Anyway back to the frugaleering, our energy deal finishes at the end of the month so we will be onto the expensive rate, liek everyone else it's literally doubling. We've been trying to cut down.on energy use but when I compared this month statement etc to the same time last year they are pretty much the same usage 🤔 will try and look at it properly this week. We should get the full grant aswell I believe. I don't really understand how it works, it goes onto our energy account is that right?

As expected a spendy day yesterday approx £100 on clothes for DC but good to spend 1-1 time with one teen.

Nsd day today hopefully we saw FIL in the week for father's Day and seeing mine next week. No plans for today. Might take DC to the park later on.

Unescorted · 19/06/2022 15:58

@BigSkies2022 be careful with the disposal clauses and service charges. There are some shocking deals on retirement homes where even once your parent has died you still have to pay the service charge until the flat sells.

I will go and catch up with the rest of your news now 😋

Alfie well done to your DD.

Mrs I have an image of you bopping about.

Wolf that is gross.

The award ceremony was successful and DD is home. All is good.

Oo unescorted glad to hear from you. How fantastic that you were nominated for an award. Is it outing to say what for?
hope the frock went down well (not literally)

Unescorted · 20/06/2022 06:36

Outstanding service.
The dress is minus bias tape..... An exercise in why you should never out a thing you need in a publicly available place when you have a child doing a BFA in the house. She is going to town tomorrow and will be replacing it.... She is forgiven mind. She has brought some beautiful fridge art home.

Went to dsis yesterday for a bbq. It rained. So we ate indoors. I drank way too much. So an struggling right now. Yuk.

am emailing work today to change my hours so I can manage school drop offs and pick ups. DH isn’t exactly on board with it. But need to work something out before school starts.

Wolfcub · 20/06/2022 07:12

Well this morning started super early with the dog being sick. Joy.

Dog walked and brushed. Dog bedding in wash.

Looked for the sausages I'd planned to have for tea in the freezer, no sausages

I don't want to go to work. I hate work at the moment. Working up to it with a cuppa first

lifelongfrugaleer · 20/06/2022 07:15

Feeling urgh here too.
i hear yah on work wolf
weekend was too busy, pil too draining

BigSkies2022 · 20/06/2022 08:07

Morning all. Parents leaving today, successful weekend and a decision they are happy with reached. Just the small matter of selling, buying and moving left now!

Well done on award, Unescorted, and lovely to have DD home. As for the service charges - well, there isn't a choice really. Between constraints of budget, location, willingness to do work on an older property (zero willingness) versus buying a spanking new one that needs no work whatsoever, the selection of suitable properties are very small indeed. So we will, eventually, be faced with service charges on a property they are no longer using. But we have found some where the service charges are relatively low, so that's the best we can do, really.
Have to pull food expenditure and consumption back in check for the remainder of the month. DS made a fab chocolate cake yesterday for his dad, and we have been eating and drinking rather, ahem, well. Feeling decidedly out of condition today...

TheNewlmprovedMrsMadEvans · 20/06/2022 10:42

Thank you Tayto & Martha yes the gig was the same except Tom JOnes did a few songs earlier in the concert before the Stereophonics came on , have to agree with you Kelly is still a handsome man Smile
Morrisons today £20 just bots and bobs, weather is beautiful here hope everyone has a lovely day Smile

CurlsandCurves · 20/06/2022 12:47

Result from Sainsburys. Cancelled my old card, set me up a new one. Refunded the points I’d had stolen plus a further 2000 as a goodwill gesture. Very happy with that.

Just about to have lunch then food shop.

ememem84 · 20/06/2022 13:25

£40 in - sold some storage canisters on fb.
£14 in - refund on some pjs I bought in next. Wanted a size M. Top was xs and shorts xl. When buying sets make sure to check the sizes.

AdoraBell · 20/06/2022 15:14

Groceries £69.15 plus £3.75 in town.

Taytocrisps · 20/06/2022 18:43

Stressful day at work today. Roll on Saturday (holidays). I have to fit in a vet appointment (DCat1) and a GP appointment (DD) between now and then. And pack obviously. And drop both cats off at the cattery. At least I'm off on Friday.

lifelongfrugaleer · 21/06/2022 06:56

Write lists tayto. Where are you going? Buy whatever you forget

Nsd yesterday as filled car Sunday £60.
nsd Also today. I’m eating the freezer down for summer holidays

£180 for an electric survey this week too. Looks like a full rewrite is needed. Move some savings too and will restart so to
pay me first

Wolfcub · 21/06/2022 07:13

Bloody hell Life your house just keeps on giving. Mind you when it's done it'll give you peace of mind for years.
I have already sent a dissatisfied customer email to the insurance contractor this morning

Tayto agree make a list and then buy what you forget. I think it's always a bit stressful gearing up for a holiday

I called ds this morning, he stayed sleeping, I discovered he was wet from his shoulders to his knees, even the duvet is wet. He has a bit of a cold so I presume that's the reason.

On Fri eve we were having meatballs for dinner, we visited local shop on way home, then I went to cook meatballs to discover they were mouldy, had to get back into car and go to shop for meat, everything else was safely tucked up in the freezer.

Happierwithouthim · 21/06/2022 08:40

Yikes life
tayto going on holidays can be so stressful leading up to it, a friend is going on hols fri, 2 adults, 3 dc but she'll do everything to get them organised to go and he'll pack his case and drive the car to airport, except she's got covid so isn't able to do stuff Shock

Yesterday €80 on diesel small topup shop at local shop €9.74, I've decided I'm just going to use this shop for topups for next month, we've a big Centra nearby also but I spend loads there as its enticing for dc, and me also!

Today €15 at dump was last there 28th May.

ememem84 · 21/06/2022 12:43

Happierwithouthim · 21/06/2022 08:22

EM has he an alternative solution?

Yes. He can “be flexible as and when” which just won’t work.

the changes I’ve asked for are 930-5 three days a week. 930-2 two days. He will pick up 2 days. I will do 2. Mum and dad 1.

annoyed. It’s payday and work haven’t refunded my expenses. £800. But I’ve chased it and should have it tomorrow.

Happierwithouthim · 21/06/2022 14:27

Wing it basically?
I'd be like you want some structure
