Follow on from the old thread

This is a space / long running thread for people wanting tips on making life cheaper for what ever reason and support who have to make living less expensive. If you are new here just post away everyone is welcome.

Frugal tips from the hive mind so far....

Check your outgoing-are they essential, are you on the best deal
Loyalty cards for stores you regularly shop at
Meal plan
Annual budget rather than monthly for those, well annual, expenses
Second hand is fine for 90% of stuff
Sign up to money saving expert emails
Insulation at home.
Close curtains at dark and tuck behind rads
Foil behind external wall rad
Turn the heating down . Tropical houses are not necessary
Use the washing line when you can
Look out for food recycling scheme- bread and butter thing, company shop, too good to go type things
Do you have to buy that Christmas/ birthday present. Can you give time instead
Eat less meat (tho I’m rubbish at this)
Have a on toast day. Or baked potato weekly
Double up while the oven is on for a reheat meal or a bake. Save electric running the oven less.
Branded goods are not always the best
-Walk those short trips if possible, instead of using the car (I am the worst for doing this). Saves petrol, good exercise too.
-Combine car trips better too eg dropped DD off at an activity tonight, which is next to the supermarket.
Cancel sky, if you still want the programmes switch to Now Tv for a fraction of the price
Cancel any subscriptions you don't need. Check direct debits to make sure you're not paying for anything you no longer need by accident
Check all your bills, insurances etc are the cheapest you can get for the cover you need (the last bit is important)
If you can get a voucher, use a cash back site or have some sort of work discount (nhs, bluelight, Tesco, student etc) check before paying
Meal plan before you shop. Make extra to freeze for another day as it's often cheaper per kg to buy bigger packs of meat
Go veggie a couple of times a week
Aldi and Lidl are great but not if you're going to get sidetracked by the aisle of doom
An annual budget is essential but pay yourself first each month so money into the annual pot, into savings, off debt before anything else happens. Make sure there's a line in your budget for fun money even if it's a tiny amount, budgeting can be a grind otherwise
You will have patches of spendiness and demotivation, don't give up just start again from wherever you end up
Take your own drinks, snacks, food, picnic - Invariably cheaper and nicer
Make your own if you have a stocked baking cupboard and spice cupboard. Cheaper and nicer, tho building said cupboard can be ££ (costs can be reduced by a visit to your local international supermarket)
Aldi for baking stuff it’s fine.
Work out of season for clothes as it’s usually cheaper
i switched to a coffee subscription (coffee is my weakness) - so our local shop delivers me a 250g bag of ground coffee every 2 weeks (i have 4 in the cupboard currently) and i make my own morning coffee. the subscription is for 6 months and costs me £58 i think. a takeaway from the same shop is £2.80 a pop. so it is a money saver. I bought a Contigo cup (spendy but worth every penny). so take my coffee hot to work with me.

I'm also a fan of using it up. so tings like toiletries, stationary (i am also a notebook hoarder) food etc. not replacing until it's all gone (or all of one thing gone).

my Lloyds account does "save the change" so it rounds up a purchase and then moves the pence to my savings account.

I also pay myself first on payday and am trying to use the things we have- zoo membership - use it loads so worth the £160 a year cost. same with my gym membership i use it so get my moneys worth.

Also what you can save/be frugal on can be inversely related to your means. If you have more "spare" money per month it's easier to buy in bulk and choose things that are cheapest per kg. If you have less or no spare money this isn't possible to do and then you're looking at cheapest price per item rather than per kg.

Agree re taking own stuff although I do often forget but a good coffee cup and water bottle is a good investment if you can afford it

If you have a dog use something like all about dog food to work out what the best food is you can buy based on what you can afford to spend per day
I also give the clothes an extra spin in the washing machine before they go in the dryer, and dry outside whenever i can - currently not living at home, so limited to a washer dryer (which is crap) and an airer next to a rad which i hate.

im a big fan of using the freezer and freeze anything i can. we buy reduced items (like bread and keep it in the freezer as it saves it going off - we maybe get through a loaf every couple of weeks).
I know that credit cards are sometimes seen here as the work of the devil (on MN specifically not this thread) but if you have one use to to your advantage. Mine gives me money back in the form of M&S or amazon vouchers every quarter depending on how much I've spent. and as long as you pay it off every month it works.
Top Cashback for all internet purchases.
Join the library - many have free access to Audible, Libby (for magazines and newspapers) as well as having an amazing selection of books.
Consider how you cook things - residual heat cooking works really well for rice and any slow cooker recipe.
Grow herbs and salad leaves on a window sill
Grow soft fruit - your local allotment / neighbours with a raspberry cane/ strawberry / current / gooseberry will be more than happy to give you a cutting.
Look for local food pantries
If you need credit use a Credit Union. If you are saving support your local credit union by becoming one of their savers.

I use Amazon subscribe and save for loo rolls cat food etc need to review it though as the prices seem to be going up

Same. Seemed expensive for it. But then the convenience….

sometimes that alone is worth paying for.

we subscribe and save nappies for dd (although she’s only in pull ups overnight now). Laundry detergent (the Amazon “presto” one) fabric softener (as above - presto) (although realised I have 6 bottles in the garage and another 6 coming this week and it’s too late to cancel…) loo roll and kitchen paper. And tea. If you get the max amount monthly you unlock the savings and it does work out cheaper. must review ours though.

packed for tomorrow and alarm set. Flight out is at 7.05. So need to be there just around 620. Ick.

have the paperwork I need notebook pens laptop (for notes and checking emails once back at the lounge at Heathrow) “essentials” kit (make up spare pants deodorant make up wipes hair ties tissues etc in case of impromptu overnight stay - sometimes BA cancel the last flight back…) keys purse sunnies chargers blah blah.

outfit and makeup is all in the bathroom for the morning.

marthasmum · 26/04/2022 20:21

decaff- sounds like you are doing very well already. Sometimes the higher price and the added convenience is really worth it if you have a lot on.
mrs can’t believe your mum is coming to 90!
I can’t beat Costco for loo rolls - have tried a few places instead including Amazon, but the Costco ones seem to last the longest. You’ve reminded me mrs to cancel the Amazon order I set up for them.
sadly I’ve come to the end of student price for Amazon prime and they are now going to charge me full price, but I’ve had a good innings.
on track so far with spends this month…I’ve been restrained with the food shopping.
need to swap the winter tyres on my car and DDs which will be pricey but hopefully enough money set aside.
went to a PhD workshop today, it was lovely to have a bit of time away from the rest of my job to think about it. Ideally I’d work 4 days a week and have a day to do my PhD - I fantasise about this but I just can’t afford it really- would leave no money at all for contingencies, supporting DC at uni etc.

TheNewlmprovedMrsMadEvans · 26/04/2022 20:33

Martha l find Costco is very good for certain things especially if they are on offer. Their bakery/deli division is amazing and delicious . Just paid my Amazon Prime £79 but it's well worth it for me because my Mum and Bob and the four of us all use it for deliveries and it saves so much on postage of presents and gift cards . We don't change our tyres unless they need changing , l don't know about Winter and Summer tyres is it something l/we should be doing ? Only Dh has never said about it to me before .
I have everything crossed for you re your PHD Smile

TheNewlmprovedMrsMadEvans · 26/04/2022 20:34

Em have a great time the weather is glorious atm fingers crossed Smile

CheeseMaiden · 26/04/2022 20:42

@Decafflatteplease, we used boosters but DD was such a milk monster that they were no match for her. I think our washing machine will be relieved once potty training starts. I wonder if we will notice the difference in water and electricity usage?

northender · 26/04/2022 20:49

Lovely to see new people on the thread.
Bit of a stressful week here as dh is as things stand, being ordered to be in the office 4 days a week which will mean at least 12 hours commuting a week and minimum costs of £75. It pisses me off as it is an entirely political decision. His team will mostly be in different offices so he will spend his days on his laptop on meetings via Teams as he does now. He wouldn't have taken the job on those terms due to the cost and time factors, but was told that prior to the pandemic the team were mostly only in the office for 2-3 days a week so his idea of 2 days a week would be fine.
Anyhow, there is a discussion to be had and we'll wait to see what happens, but I am looking at our budget and planning for worst case scenario. Thankfully we have got ourselves into a pretty sound position so I'm sure we'll be fine, just won't have the surplus we've been enjoying for a little while now.
Will try to post some holiday pics at some point.

TheNewlmprovedMrsMadEvans · 26/04/2022 20:58

Oh North that really sucks l am sorry lovely Flowers
Cheese l am hoping we will notice a difference in the fuel bills during the Spring and Summer tbh , we surely won't be using half as much fuel now
l live in hope Hmm

marthasmum · 26/04/2022 21:11

north I’d be cross too.
mrs I didn’t know they were a thing either! Then when I got this car, the garage told me it had winter tyres on and I needed to change them for summer ones as they get damaged if you have them on out of season. So I swap them at this time of year and the garage have my summer ones in storage. Not sure if it’s a false economy but the weather can be bad round here and I rely on the car. Makes me feel like a responsible adult to have special tyres 😂

TheNewlmprovedMrsMadEvans · 26/04/2022 21:39

Martha l never realised that! I didn't know that either! Thank you for telling me l have a hankering for them too now lol Smile

Alfiemoon1 · 26/04/2022 22:06

most People don’t need winter tyres and have summer ones all year round but it depends on how bad the weather gets in your area

northender · 27/04/2022 00:22

Oh wow PhD Martha? Hope they give you the time. I'm struggling even with study time with my ACP training, haha!!

ememem84 · 27/04/2022 05:56

Morning. Off to airport we go! Suns out here. Yay.

Uninspiredusername · 27/04/2022 07:00

Good morning, would love to join this chat please. I have a DH and one DC, work part at home, part at work. Pandemic circumstances allowed us to save more money which was a huge privilege but now it’s more normal, coupled with a few recent bills, then general price hikes, has made me sit up a bit more and be more conscious.

my main weaknesses is takeaways and eating out. I’m already making my own lunches for work but I know I can do better. Having said said I’m out for dinner twice this week…
anyway. Hoping this will be a good motivation!

hope everybody has a wonderful day

marthasmum · 27/04/2022 07:19

north it’s probably a similar set up to you. In theory I have a day a week (and my manager is very supportive) but in practice often too busy to take it. And the work overflows into evenings already so I’m starting to panic a bit about how it’s going to happen - 2 years max to go. I am gathering courage to address it more formally eg possibly through HR, I’m not good at stuff like that as I hate confrontation.
Is ACP something medical?
welcome uninspired

Alfiemoon1 · 27/04/2022 08:24

morning all welcome uninspired

CurlsandCurves · 27/04/2022 08:31

Morning all.

Day off today so I’m just having a slow start with a coffee or 2. Then I’m taking my friend out for brunch, belated birthday present. It’s been a few weeks since we’ve seen each other so can’t wait for a good catch up.

Checked my bank this morning and the council tax rebate has landed! Will probably be used to make a one off extra payment to energy.

2 days till payday…

WreckTangled · 27/04/2022 09:04

I'm back at work for the first time in 13 days. 🥱 went to the gym this morning for the first time in a week. It's going to be a long day...

Alfiemoon1 · 27/04/2022 09:55

That’s great curls I am still waiting on my council tax rebate I haven’t heard of anyone receiving theirs yet
Ddog has a vets appointment later with the surgeon so fingers crossed everything is ok as I’ve caught him jumping on the sofa and he still thinks he can chase the cats etc. won’t have to pay as we are going through the insurance
ds is working tonight round the same time so ddog will have to come with me to drop ds off and he hates the car so that will be stressful for us both Lol

AdoraBell · 27/04/2022 14:38

I keep falling off the thread. £6-ish on lunch, meeting with business contact. No groceries this week other than bread and milk. That was about £4 on Monday.

Gensola · 27/04/2022 17:07

Payday for me tomorrow - counting the minutes!! It is absolutely freezing here - I’ve been cold all day, heating will be on tonight!
need to sit down and do a meal plan for the week ahead and then do the Lidl shop tomorrow, I have some good coupons in the app too which is great.

CheeseMaiden · 27/04/2022 17:20

I was planning on having a few no spend days in the run up to payday (Friday), DD woke up with a bad cold this morning so I caved in and stocked up on biscuits! Any ideas for occupying a poorly toddler would be very welcome!

Uninspiredusername · 27/04/2022 17:55

Todays spend:
£1.10 on tortilla chips to go with my homemade chilli
£13 on my commute - unavoidable really!

not bad all in all. I’m worried about my energy bill. It used to be £90 a month. Next month the DD will be over £200! Im getting a smart meter in June. We’ve turned off the heating, and try to minimise everything else but we have electric hobs and use washing machine once a day due to DC….

ememem84 · 27/04/2022 19:20

Nsd. But. Have discovered the lounge at Heathrow.

Decafflatteplease · 27/04/2022 19:27

Not very frugal McDonald's breakfast for DH and I as he isn't well. £9.

School trip £15

New bin £8

Really feel that there's always something that needs spending on! Admittedly today's breakfast was frivolous!

TheNewlmprovedMrsMadEvans · 27/04/2022 20:02
