Follow on from the old thread

This is a space / long running thread for people wanting tips on making life cheaper for what ever reason and support who have to make living less expensive. If you are new here just post away everyone is welcome.

Frugal tips from the hive mind so far....

Check your outgoing-are they essential, are you on the best deal
Loyalty cards for stores you regularly shop at
Meal plan
Annual budget rather than monthly for those, well annual, expenses
Second hand is fine for 90% of stuff
Sign up to money saving expert emails
Insulation at home.
Close curtains at dark and tuck behind rads
Foil behind external wall rad
Turn the heating down . Tropical houses are not necessary
Use the washing line when you can
Look out for food recycling scheme- bread and butter thing, company shop, too good to go type things
Do you have to buy that Christmas/ birthday present. Can you give time instead
Eat less meat (tho I’m rubbish at this)
Have a on toast day. Or baked potato weekly
Double up while the oven is on for a reheat meal or a bake. Save electric running the oven less.
Branded goods are not always the best
-Walk those short trips if possible, instead of using the car (I am the worst for doing this). Saves petrol, good exercise too.
-Combine car trips better too eg dropped DD off at an activity tonight, which is next to the supermarket.
Cancel sky, if you still want the programmes switch to Now Tv for a fraction of the price
Cancel any subscriptions you don't need. Check direct debits to make sure you're not paying for anything you no longer need by accident
Check all your bills, insurances etc are the cheapest you can get for the cover you need (the last bit is important)
If you can get a voucher, use a cash back site or have some sort of work discount (nhs, bluelight, Tesco, student etc) check before paying
Meal plan before you shop. Make extra to freeze for another day as it's often cheaper per kg to buy bigger packs of meat
Go veggie a couple of times a week
Aldi and Lidl are great but not if you're going to get sidetracked by the aisle of doom
An annual budget is essential but pay yourself first each month so money into the annual pot, into savings, off debt before anything else happens. Make sure there's a line in your budget for fun money even if it's a tiny amount, budgeting can be a grind otherwise
You will have patches of spendiness and demotivation, don't give up just start again from wherever you end up
Take your own drinks, snacks, food, picnic - Invariably cheaper and nicer
Make your own if you have a stocked baking cupboard and spice cupboard. Cheaper and nicer, tho building said cupboard can be ££ (costs can be reduced by a visit to your local international supermarket)
Aldi for baking stuff it’s fine.
Work out of season for clothes as it’s usually cheaper
i switched to a coffee subscription (coffee is my weakness) - so our local shop delivers me a 250g bag of ground coffee every 2 weeks (i have 4 in the cupboard currently) and i make my own morning coffee. the subscription is for 6 months and costs me £58 i think. a takeaway from the same shop is £2.80 a pop. so it is a money saver. I bought a Contigo cup (spendy but worth every penny). so take my coffee hot to work with me.

I'm also a fan of using it up. so tings like toiletries, stationary (i am also a notebook hoarder) food etc. not replacing until it's all gone (or all of one thing gone).

my Lloyds account does "save the change" so it rounds up a purchase and then moves the pence to my savings account.

I also pay myself first on payday and am trying to use the things we have- zoo membership - use it loads so worth the £160 a year cost. same with my gym membership i use it so get my moneys worth.

Also what you can save/be frugal on can be inversely related to your means. If you have more "spare" money per month it's easier to buy in bulk and choose things that are cheapest per kg. If you have less or no spare money this isn't possible to do and then you're looking at cheapest price per item rather than per kg.

Agree re taking own stuff although I do often forget but a good coffee cup and water bottle is a good investment if you can afford it

If you have a dog use something like all about dog food to work out what the best food is you can buy based on what you can afford to spend per day
I also give the clothes an extra spin in the washing machine before they go in the dryer, and dry outside whenever i can - currently not living at home, so limited to a washer dryer (which is crap) and an airer next to a rad which i hate.

im a big fan of using the freezer and freeze anything i can. we buy reduced items (like bread and keep it in the freezer as it saves it going off - we maybe get through a loaf every couple of weeks).
I know that credit cards are sometimes seen here as the work of the devil (on MN specifically not this thread) but if you have one use to to your advantage. Mine gives me money back in the form of M&S or amazon vouchers every quarter depending on how much I've spent. and as long as you pay it off every month it works.
Top Cashback for all internet purchases.
Join the library - many have free access to Audible, Libby (for magazines and newspapers) as well as having an amazing selection of books.
Consider how you cook things - residual heat cooking works really well for rice and any slow cooker recipe.
Grow herbs and salad leaves on a window sill
Grow soft fruit - your local allotment / neighbours with a raspberry cane/ strawberry / current / gooseberry will be more than happy to give you a cutting.
Look for local food pantries
If you need credit use a Credit Union. If you are saving support your local credit union by becoming one of their savers.

I had a good frugal find the other day, I don't really I'm sainburys (I'm ocado / m and s need to change that really it's not very frugal! ) Anyway I found a nectar card that I only use if I'm buying Sainsbury's clothes online but it turned out to have £7 on it. You can only redeem them in increments of £5 but that was still £5 off a shop for me.

Also boots points, I was saving my boots points no idea what for but I had £15 on it so got those spent aswell! Also noticed that boots have started doing lower prices for things if you have a card eg some toothbrushes I bought were £4 normally or £2 if you had a boots card

lifelongfrugaleer · 26/04/2022 06:16

Hey newbies.
last spend of yesterday was £19 milk bill
nsd planned today

WreckTangled · 26/04/2022 07:48

Cheese that's really shit I'm sorry

London was good thanks! See my cocktail below Grin probably spent about £75 all in. That was lunch, evening meal, tube, a top in Zara and hat in h&m and a couple of drink. So not too bad. Exhausting though, we didn't get home until 11:45 but ds is allowed to go into school late.

Oh also I just got my email from SSE saying my fixed rate is ending. Does anyone know what the advice is at the moment? Fix or standard? Bearing in mind we're hoping to move in the next year

wreck that looks like a super drink! What was it?

I love a fancy cocktail.

day in the office today then out tomorrow. So need to do a ton of meeting prep today. Sigh. And make sure I have everything with me.

our flight back is at 820 I think tomorrow evening. We’re leaving client at 230. To drive back down to Heathrow. Debating taking laptop with me so I can sit in the lounge and catch up on emails. Hmm

Alfiemoon1 · 26/04/2022 09:42

Wreck that cocktail looks amazing what is it

WreckTangled · 26/04/2022 09:48

£290 on tickets to capitals dinner time ball Blush we're not going on holiday this year so have agreed to do some nice things with the children. So far we have this and a day at a festival.

WreckTangled · 26/04/2022 10:36

Summer not dinner ffs. Also mn is still being really glitchy and shit

belephant · 26/04/2022 11:37

Eyeing up that cocktail enviously! I haven't got back into drinking since I got pregnant last year, I'm still partially breastfeeding so I've been avoiding drinking for that reason too. It's been great for my bank account, but summer is round the corner and hot weather does bring out the wine lover in me! Wine

I feel like I've been haemorrhaging money recently as I've had a few family birthdays but I can't think of anything else I should have to spend for the rest of the week. We've got a food recipe delivery box for dinner every night this week, just a one-off for the intro offer. Even with the offer it's still pretty much if not more than what we'd spend per-meal from the supermarket anyway, but it's a nice treat Smile

ememem84 · 26/04/2022 12:00

Yum!!!!! I love a fun cocktail!

im debating taking ds to London to the natural history museum. We can do it in a day. But we have to fly. So it’ll be spends. I have promised though he can go see the dinosaurs at “Andy’s” museum (if you know you know).

looking at it the cheapest I can do it (before school hols) is £138 return flight for me and him. Museum is free entry. Plus trains and food snacks etc. sigh.

CheeseMaiden · 26/04/2022 17:51

That cocktail looks amazing!
Today I started a ‘price book’ for all the household essentials (nappies, loo roll, rice, oat milk etc) we tend to buy monthly and in bulk to get a lower price.
Much easier to compare prices whilst shopping if you have all the numbers to hand.

Unescorted · 26/04/2022 17:58

em we just missed each other in Bham. On the train home now. I am so looking forward to getting home. Ds had his first home alone night.

Welcome cheese, nearly and below. It is lovely to see new peeps on the tread. hopes she hasn't left anyone off

This is a good idea. We try to buy in bulk where we can we get 5l bottles of washing up liquid as it works out cheaper than single bottles, less plastic waste too and the 5l bottles handy to fill with water for the car for washing muddy/ sandy boots etc after walks.

We used to bulk buy toilet paper when it was on offer. We use ocado eco one and it was £4 for 9 rolls but often on 2 for £6 so I would stock up. Hasn't been on offer for ages and is now £4.40. uurgh. We have cloth wipes and cloth nappies so for wees I'm trying to get everyone to use cloth but so far it's just me!

I really need to switch to Lidl / Aldi but ocado is so easy! (I'm a full time carer to disabled dc so time is limited) once a month or once every 6 weeks I go on a weekend to Lidl and do a massive cupboard shop eg cereals, crisps, cereal bars etc but day to day is ocado but really I want to get to the point where day to day is Lidl / aldi

CheeseMaiden · 26/04/2022 19:20

@Decafflatteplease, great tip for the 5l bottles, it always seems a waste for them to go straight into the recycling when empty.
we use cloth nappies and wipes too but always ended up with over night leaks so have resorted to disposables for night.
which reusables do you use? Do you rate them for overnight ?

Alfiemoon1 · 26/04/2022 19:20

I use Amazon subscribe and save for loo rolls cat food etc need to review it though as the prices seem to be going up

CheeseMaiden · 26/04/2022 19:25

On the loo roll front, sainsburys own brand is £8 for 24 rolls which is pretty decent, will compare with Lidl when we do a top up shop tomorrow

We currently use disposables in the night (Asda own brand they are fab) but use cloth in the day (all different makes). I've been cloth nappying for over a decade now and have used a variety of nappies. When I did use to use cloth overnight we really liked little lamb bamboo or tots bots bamboozles with a mothereease airflow wrap or a petit Lulu wrap but now we use disposables at night for ease tbh!

Decafflatteplease · 26/04/2022 19:29

@CheeseMaiden let me know if you are looking for any cloth nappies I've literally got newborn all the way to plus sized to be getting rid of slowly over the next few weeks and monthswould love to pass some on for free if you can make use of them. Definitely "playwear" condition though but still work. Various brands and styles. Really don't want any money or anything would just love them to be used again and our family is complete

TheNewlmprovedMrsMadEvans · 26/04/2022 19:34

Welcome Cheese, Nearly and Below Smile
Re Subscribe and save , l put an order in then once it's been delivered l cancel. A lot of the time you can get a 20% voucher off when you look next time , at least l have done that with the Felix cat food and the Cappuchino Nescafe sachets for my Mum. I don't think they give you any more vouchers unless it's a new sub but they never seem to query it with me .
Did a lot of life admin today & ordered Mum's 90th birthday cake from Costco for 14.99 it's an absolute steal .
Hope everyone is ok Smile weather is beautiful here again today .

Spent £14 on cards, Ryvita crackers 6 boxes, Hariboo 6 pkts, Cad choc mint fingers 3 boxes , 2 x nuts , chocolate and

Decafflatteplease · 26/04/2022 19:38

Popped to Asda today there were some good clothes in the sale, picked up trousers for one DC, pyjamas for another DC and jumpers for another DC, all less than half price so excellent value.

CheeseMaiden · 26/04/2022 19:50

That’s so kind of you @Decafflatteplease! we are actually considering potty training so we may not need our cloth nappies for much longer.
do you have any local baby banks who will take them?

TheNewlmprovedMrsMadEvans · 26/04/2022 19:50

I wish they had an audit button here lol
Spent £14 on 5 x Gorgeous Tracks cards, Ryvita crackers 6 boxes, Hariboo 6 pkts, Cad choc mint fingers 3 boxes , 2 x nuts , 2 x chocolate bars and a partridge in a pair tree lol , this was all from my local bargain shop , they do very near to sell by date stuff or over the best before date , all branded makes . I honestly can't see a difference in the taste of anything from there.

Decafflatteplease · 26/04/2022 20:03

Yes @CheeseMaiden have already given some to local nappy library. We are about to potty train our youngest aswell.

For your night nappies are you boosting them? We used to do one bamboo booster inside the nappy and one between the nappy and wrap. Oh this has made me nostalgic now sometimes I sit and just go through our old newborn nappies and imagine having one last squish but then I come to my senses

Alfiemoon1 · 26/04/2022 20:14

I haven’t seen any vouchers for a while on subscribe and save
