Follow on from the old thread

This is a space / long running thread for people wanting tips on making life cheaper for what ever reason and support who have to make living less expensive. If you are new here just post away everyone is welcome.

Frugal tips from the hive mind so far....

Check your outgoing-are they essential, are you on the best deal
Loyalty cards for stores you regularly shop at
Meal plan
Annual budget rather than monthly for those, well annual, expenses
Second hand is fine for 90% of stuff
Sign up to money saving expert emails
Insulation at home.
Close curtains at dark and tuck behind rads
Foil behind external wall rad
Turn the heating down . Tropical houses are not necessary
Use the washing line when you can
Look out for food recycling scheme- bread and butter thing, company shop, too good to go type things
Do you have to buy that Christmas/ birthday present. Can you give time instead
Eat less meat (tho I’m rubbish at this)
Have a on toast day. Or baked potato weekly
Double up while the oven is on for a reheat meal or a bake. Save electric running the oven less.
Branded goods are not always the best
-Walk those short trips if possible, instead of using the car (I am the worst for doing this). Saves petrol, good exercise too.
-Combine car trips better too eg dropped DD off at an activity tonight, which is next to the supermarket.
Cancel sky, if you still want the programmes switch to Now Tv for a fraction of the price
Cancel any subscriptions you don't need. Check direct debits to make sure you're not paying for anything you no longer need by accident
Check all your bills, insurances etc are the cheapest you can get for the cover you need (the last bit is important)
If you can get a voucher, use a cash back site or have some sort of work discount (nhs, bluelight, Tesco, student etc) check before paying
Meal plan before you shop. Make extra to freeze for another day as it's often cheaper per kg to buy bigger packs of meat
Go veggie a couple of times a week
Aldi and Lidl are great but not if you're going to get sidetracked by the aisle of doom
An annual budget is essential but pay yourself first each month so money into the annual pot, into savings, off debt before anything else happens. Make sure there's a line in your budget for fun money even if it's a tiny amount, budgeting can be a grind otherwise
You will have patches of spendiness and demotivation, don't give up just start again from wherever you end up
Take your own drinks, snacks, food, picnic - Invariably cheaper and nicer
Make your own if you have a stocked baking cupboard and spice cupboard. Cheaper and nicer, tho building said cupboard can be ££ (costs can be reduced by a visit to your local international supermarket)
Aldi for baking stuff it’s fine.
Work out of season for clothes as it’s usually cheaper
i switched to a coffee subscription (coffee is my weakness) - so our local shop delivers me a 250g bag of ground coffee every 2 weeks (i have 4 in the cupboard currently) and i make my own morning coffee. the subscription is for 6 months and costs me £58 i think. a takeaway from the same shop is £2.80 a pop. so it is a money saver. I bought a Contigo cup (spendy but worth every penny). so take my coffee hot to work with me.

I'm also a fan of using it up. so tings like toiletries, stationary (i am also a notebook hoarder) food etc. not replacing until it's all gone (or all of one thing gone).

my Lloyds account does "save the change" so it rounds up a purchase and then moves the pence to my savings account.

I also pay myself first on payday and am trying to use the things we have- zoo membership - use it loads so worth the £160 a year cost. same with my gym membership i use it so get my moneys worth.

Also what you can save/be frugal on can be inversely related to your means. If you have more "spare" money per month it's easier to buy in bulk and choose things that are cheapest per kg. If you have less or no spare money this isn't possible to do and then you're looking at cheapest price per item rather than per kg.

Agree re taking own stuff although I do often forget but a good coffee cup and water bottle is a good investment if you can afford it

If you have a dog use something like all about dog food to work out what the best food is you can buy based on what you can afford to spend per day
I also give the clothes an extra spin in the washing machine before they go in the dryer, and dry outside whenever i can - currently not living at home, so limited to a washer dryer (which is crap) and an airer next to a rad which i hate.

im a big fan of using the freezer and freeze anything i can. we buy reduced items (like bread and keep it in the freezer as it saves it going off - we maybe get through a loaf every couple of weeks).
I know that credit cards are sometimes seen here as the work of the devil (on MN specifically not this thread) but if you have one use to to your advantage. Mine gives me money back in the form of M&S or amazon vouchers every quarter depending on how much I've spent. and as long as you pay it off every month it works.
Top Cashback for all internet purchases.
Join the library - many have free access to Audible, Libby (for magazines and newspapers) as well as having an amazing selection of books.
Consider how you cook things - residual heat cooking works really well for rice and any slow cooker recipe.
Grow herbs and salad leaves on a window sill
Grow soft fruit - your local allotment / neighbours with a raspberry cane/ strawberry / current / gooseberry will be more than happy to give you a cutting.
Look for local food pantries
If you need credit use a Credit Union. If you are saving support your local credit union by becoming one of their savers.

Sorry to hear about your cat wreck
Wolf that all sounds stressful, but well done on the slow cooking
Unescorted well done on the dressmaking. Doing it for yourself is more of a challenge. Trainers will be fine I reckon, there seem to be more women wearing them with dresses now.
Time I remember my moment of realisation that my parents had not been cleaned for an age. We did a very satisfying clean before getting the cleaners in.
Did a machine embroidery workshop yesterday which wasn't frugal but a treat for me. It has been a really stressful time so doing something creative was a lovely distraction. It was great fun and will definitely continue with it. I already have tons of spare fabrics & threads I can use so frugal in one way.
Today I am playing cricket for a big chunk of the day so beef casserole already defrosting for tonight.
This week will be busy, news about mum will be on Thursday. Camping trip with friends next weekend. No cost as such because it is friends who have a camping field that they maintain really well but don't run commercially

ememem84 · 12/06/2022 08:49

£40 in yesterday. Offered a colleague some kitchen storage canisters. She sent me the money. Yay.

Happierwithouthim · 12/06/2022 10:25

WreckTangled · 10/06/2022 06:08

Thanks everyone. We're so sad. The dc sobbed all evening as did dh and I and I can't say I feel much better this morning. Need to get through work though. He really was the best cat.

Wreck so sorry to read this, loved your photos of him over the years

TheNewlmprovedMrsMadEvans · 12/06/2022 14:11

Afternoon everyone 😊
Beautiful weather here 🤗
Have been shopping to Morrisons £17 on bits and bobs.
Hope everyone is having this beautiful weather too 😊

Decafflatteplease · 12/06/2022 14:37

Just catching up with the thread I've been on an impromptu weekend away to visit a friend, not very good for the bank balance but very good for the soul!

wreck hope you are all doing ok after the loss of your dcat

unescorted dress making sounds fab as does the award!

tayto i hear you on the life admin. Im a full time carer to disabled dc and literally spent 2 full school days this week either in meetings or arranging meetings, printing and laminating resources, ringing people, sewing holes in clothes that have been chewed etc. It's literally a full time job. A friend said to me oh when you said you are dc carer I thought you just meant you're a SAHM 🤔 people don't see the scaffolding that goes around DC.

How everyone having a good weekend we are off out to a nature reserve in a bit, sunny here but quite windy!

Decafflatteplease · 12/06/2022 14:40

Also a while ago I mentioned our car insurance was up for renewal. We pay it all in go to save money but it's a big hit on the bank balance that month. I can't remember who it was but someone on here recommended putting a bit each month aside so when it rolls around next year we have the money ready so we are going to so that so thanks for the tip whoever it was!

Taytocrisps · 12/06/2022 15:52

We've had very unsettled weather here, so I've given up on painting my shed and I've been working on my flower bed instead. I've a circular flower bed in my back garden which had gone very a bit overgrown, so I've been weeding it and
planting it. It looks really good, if I do say so myself. I've two plants left to put in, and then I'm done. I need to pick up more compost tomorrow. Once the planting is done, I just have to keep up with watering and dead heading.

I'm nearly afraid to say it, but the forecast looks promising for the next few days, so I'm aiming to have the shed painted by Wednesday. I want to spray it with a mildew spray before I paint it and I need to leave the mildew spray on for 24 hours.

I'm doing lasagne for dinner today which will do for tomorrow also.

Need to think about my holiday packing and make a list.

Should probably catch up on a bit of housework too - hoovering and cleaning bathrooms etc. But it's nice to get to spend a bit of time outdoors at this time of year - well, in between showers.

CurlsandCurves · 12/06/2022 20:20

Tired. So tired.

ds2 had his birthday sleepover last night. Full on, hyper 13 year olds in the house. Who having stayed up all night decided that 5.30am was a good time to go and play football out in the street! I’ve got some neighbours to apologise to 🙈. And then at work today. But I was grateful I had the foresight to make a cottage pie yesterday so I had comfort food to just bing in the oven tonight.

Top Gear then bed.

lifelongfrugaleer · 13/06/2022 06:52

busy weekend last weekend with a horse event. Tired last night but a good nights sleeps and a nsd planned today.

TheNewlmprovedMrsMadEvans · 13/06/2022 13:27

Afternoon everyone 😊
Beautiful weather here hope you all have the same 🤗
NSD for me today Thank you 😊Busy here changing the beds, cleaning the bedrooms and bathroom. Washing on the line as l speak , have a lovely day everyone ☺️

Decafflatteplease · 13/06/2022 14:12

Lovely day here too, warm but not too warm 🙂

Got loads of towels on the line blowing nicely!

I'm annoyed today...my glasses have broken. The arm has come off. Opticians have temporarily fixed them but next week I've got to go and buy new ones and have an eye test etc. I don't really want new ones I just want my ones fixed i really like them but hey ho.

I also have contacts so glasses are just for round the house really when o haven't got my contacts in.

Going to be at least £70 apparently for new ones which is annoying as I don't even want new ones. These ones were £104 18 months ago.

Hmmm

Gensola · 13/06/2022 19:29

decaff is it worth looking up the consumer policy on products being fit for purpose - I once had a laptop repaired then replaced for free out of warranty under that set of guidelines.
£3.50 on a fancy coffee and walk with friend was my only spend today.

ememem84 · 13/06/2022 19:42

glorious day here.

spends £59 boots (although £20 of this was for a colleague who has revoluted me the money) toothpaste hair dye shampoo toothbrushes.

£37 paperchase (online) office organisation bits for home.

just got back from the reception parents open evening at the dc new school. Sobs. It’s becoming real!

next week we have the pre school one for dd. What is nice is that the rooms are next to each other and they will see loads of each other.

AdoraBell · 13/06/2022 20:41

£50.90 on groceries.

lifelongfrugaleer · 14/06/2022 06:33

£21 Aldi on fruit yesterday, it’s summer fruit season aka ££&
£10 on wi type thing today

Decafflatteplease · 14/06/2022 07:04

Love summer fruits lifelong we grow our own strawberries they are nearly ready.

The last few days m and s have had lovely packs of nectarines on the deal thing think they are 65p and you get 6-7 so well worth it. They are lovely too I've had 3 laxks so far and they are ready tomear within a day or 2 not like some I find never ripen! Worth it if you are passing.

Busy day today back to back meetings and appointments so I've packed myself breakfast, lunch, and about to make an iced coffee feeling very organised this morning!

Should be a nsd day too

BigSkies2022 · 14/06/2022 08:41

£23 in Sainsbury's, £8 of which was on keto salmon fillets, and very nice too. Have to do a bigger shop at Aldi today, but really should plan some meals first to feed houseguests. Got my 10th loaf for free (or for nearly £40 depending on how you look at it) from the naice bakers. Also need to visit zero-waste shop for laundry liquid, white vinegar and the like. Getting hot, and I've fished the fans out of the loft and the dog chill blanket from the cellar.

Have been listening to the BBC podcast about ultra-processed food (the Tulleken twins - very good) and realise, with slightly sinking heart, that there isn't really a substitute for cooking from scratch, with unmucked-about ingredients. Which can (cheering thought) include tins and frozen, but excludes the useful breaded haddock fillets, the delicious Aldi brioche, and lovely ready-cooked pulled pork in barbecue sauce...

Taytocrisps · 14/06/2022 09:30

em big steps for your little ones. Nice that they'll be just next door to each other.

Finally got speaking to someone at the bank yesterday. Let's just say I'm not a happy camper. Waiting for a call back today and an apology.

I've a few things to do around the house and garden today. And I need to get a few loads of washing done. I also want to pick up some fish from the fishmonger.

I must root out my shorts and swimsuits and check that they still fit. 2020 seems like about 10 years ago and the lockdowns haven't been kind to my figure Grin.

DD has Irish Paper 2 this morning and Biology this afternoon.

swifty1974 · 14/06/2022 13:50

Hi, some really good ideas here thanks. Read this one this morning after finding it on twitter beamoneypro.com/10-easy-ways-to-save-a-packet/

lifelongfrugaleer · 14/06/2022 16:36

Nsd today
I like the van tulken twins, but yes the processed and ultra processed list is depressing. We can only do our best.

m&s is next to Aldi so will go on Friday

BigSkies2022 · 14/06/2022 19:04

Case in point: am just cooking a tomato and coconut curry. Go me, I thought! couldn't be simpler and fresher. But the ingredients on the coconut milk tin include emusifiers, sodium carbonate, lecithin, guar gum. Oh well. It's enough to make you want to vanish into a packet of Oaties and a cup of tea while watching a box set.

BigSkies2022 · 14/06/2022 19:09

Never made it to Aldi, had to wait in for something too dull to relate. I am feeling rather grumpy and mildly depressed today, I should try and walk the mood off, but I can't face the hot, grubby streets and I can't bear to hang around waiting for the dog to sniff and mark and try and grab the abandoned remains of fried chicken dinner from the pavement. Will try and shake this frame of mind by painting my nails or something.

I did make it to the zero waste shop - £10 to replace various cleaning products. Caught up on laundry.

Will be meeting DPs at Paddington on Thursday - quite looking forward to trying the new Elizabeth line!

marthasmum · 14/06/2022 20:18

Got my council tax rebate this morning so my moaning about delay was unjustified 🙈
paid it straight into bulb account and have reduced the payment to £325 a month. Will be at least £450 in the winter though I think despite new boiler and windows.
getting paid on Friday, Ive shopped the cupboards and going to Tesco with a list and the scan and shop 😜
I read another thread on here which made me think as it was someone with a similar income to me wondering where all their money goes. Have audited my outgoings on an essential/ nice to have and could reduce/ nice to have but I’m keeping it, basis, which was helpful.
how did it go with the award unescorted? How lovely to be nominated.

ememem84 · 14/06/2022 21:30

£30 Superdrug on ducking headline stuff. Thanks kids.

there’s a case in dds nursery room so nursery have advised everyone to do a treatment just in case. Ffs. Luckily it’s hair wash day for me tomorrow anyway. So am sat here with treatment in my hair overnight. But ffs.

everyone has been treated and combed.

AdoraBell · 14/06/2022 21:42

em you’ll need to repeat the treatment after 7 days to catch any little feckers who hatch. I used vinegar and oil, as advised by friends in Latin America. Cheapest options, either olive oil or coconut. Both dissolve the exoskeleton and the vinegar dislodges the eggs.

DH paid for pub lunch, £24. Petrol is £192 here now 🤦‍♀️
