Follow on from the old thread

This is a space / long running thread for people wanting tips on making life cheaper for what ever reason and support who have to make living less expensive. If you are new here just post away everyone is welcome.

Frugal tips from the hive mind so far....

Check your outgoing-are they essential, are you on the best deal
Loyalty cards for stores you regularly shop at
Meal plan
Annual budget rather than monthly for those, well annual, expenses
Second hand is fine for 90% of stuff
Sign up to money saving expert emails
Insulation at home.
Close curtains at dark and tuck behind rads
Foil behind external wall rad
Turn the heating down . Tropical houses are not necessary
Use the washing line when you can
Look out for food recycling scheme- bread and butter thing, company shop, too good to go type things
Do you have to buy that Christmas/ birthday present. Can you give time instead
Eat less meat (tho I’m rubbish at this)
Have a on toast day. Or baked potato weekly
Double up while the oven is on for a reheat meal or a bake. Save electric running the oven less.
Branded goods are not always the best
-Walk those short trips if possible, instead of using the car (I am the worst for doing this). Saves petrol, good exercise too.
-Combine car trips better too eg dropped DD off at an activity tonight, which is next to the supermarket.
Cancel sky, if you still want the programmes switch to Now Tv for a fraction of the price
Cancel any subscriptions you don't need. Check direct debits to make sure you're not paying for anything you no longer need by accident
Check all your bills, insurances etc are the cheapest you can get for the cover you need (the last bit is important)
If you can get a voucher, use a cash back site or have some sort of work discount (nhs, bluelight, Tesco, student etc) check before paying
Meal plan before you shop. Make extra to freeze for another day as it's often cheaper per kg to buy bigger packs of meat
Go veggie a couple of times a week
Aldi and Lidl are great but not if you're going to get sidetracked by the aisle of doom
An annual budget is essential but pay yourself first each month so money into the annual pot, into savings, off debt before anything else happens. Make sure there's a line in your budget for fun money even if it's a tiny amount, budgeting can be a grind otherwise
You will have patches of spendiness and demotivation, don't give up just start again from wherever you end up
Take your own drinks, snacks, food, picnic - Invariably cheaper and nicer
Make your own if you have a stocked baking cupboard and spice cupboard. Cheaper and nicer, tho building said cupboard can be ££ (costs can be reduced by a visit to your local international supermarket)
Aldi for baking stuff it’s fine.
Work out of season for clothes as it’s usually cheaper
i switched to a coffee subscription (coffee is my weakness) - so our local shop delivers me a 250g bag of ground coffee every 2 weeks (i have 4 in the cupboard currently) and i make my own morning coffee. the subscription is for 6 months and costs me £58 i think. a takeaway from the same shop is £2.80 a pop. so it is a money saver. I bought a Contigo cup (spendy but worth every penny). so take my coffee hot to work with me.

I'm also a fan of using it up. so tings like toiletries, stationary (i am also a notebook hoarder) food etc. not replacing until it's all gone (or all of one thing gone).

my Lloyds account does "save the change" so it rounds up a purchase and then moves the pence to my savings account.

I also pay myself first on payday and am trying to use the things we have- zoo membership - use it loads so worth the £160 a year cost. same with my gym membership i use it so get my moneys worth.

Also what you can save/be frugal on can be inversely related to your means. If you have more "spare" money per month it's easier to buy in bulk and choose things that are cheapest per kg. If you have less or no spare money this isn't possible to do and then you're looking at cheapest price per item rather than per kg.

Agree re taking own stuff although I do often forget but a good coffee cup and water bottle is a good investment if you can afford it

If you have a dog use something like all about dog food to work out what the best food is you can buy based on what you can afford to spend per day
I also give the clothes an extra spin in the washing machine before they go in the dryer, and dry outside whenever i can - currently not living at home, so limited to a washer dryer (which is crap) and an airer next to a rad which i hate.

im a big fan of using the freezer and freeze anything i can. we buy reduced items (like bread and keep it in the freezer as it saves it going off - we maybe get through a loaf every couple of weeks).
I know that credit cards are sometimes seen here as the work of the devil (on MN specifically not this thread) but if you have one use to to your advantage. Mine gives me money back in the form of M&S or amazon vouchers every quarter depending on how much I've spent. and as long as you pay it off every month it works.
Top Cashback for all internet purchases.
Join the library - many have free access to Audible, Libby (for magazines and newspapers) as well as having an amazing selection of books.
Consider how you cook things - residual heat cooking works really well for rice and any slow cooker recipe.
Grow herbs and salad leaves on a window sill
Grow soft fruit - your local allotment / neighbours with a raspberry cane/ strawberry / current / gooseberry will be more than happy to give you a cutting.
Look for local food pantries
If you need credit use a Credit Union. If you are saving support your local credit union by becoming one of their savers.

Treated me and the boys to a takeaway tonight approx £40. But it’s 2 weeks till payday and I’ve been very frugal so have enough left to say sod it.

lifelongfrugaleer · 17/06/2022 06:13

Sometimes a sod it moment Is good

£116 yesterday but will get refunded from scouts
£16 me as was in a shop I don’t normally visit.

ememem84 · 17/06/2022 06:45

Yo with the kids. Horrendous bedtime last night. Dd kicked off most spectacularly. “I want my daddy” (yeah well he’s not here is he because he’s in Spain…)

it is going to be a scorcher today. Forecasted to be 32 degrees. However the weather app says “only” 26.

me and the dc are meeting grandma and grandad on the beach for breakfast. Taking coffee pastries and fruit for a breakfast picnic. Yay. And a sea swim. Tide is high at 930. Getting me and the dc some vitamin sea.

have done two loads of washing already. One was on a timer to finish at 530 (because I miscalculated!) and the other has just finished. Third lord in. Should be mostly dry by the time we leave.

BigSkies2022 · 17/06/2022 08:02

Ooh, morning sea dip. And beach breakfast. Lovely!

I am taking DPs to view a retirement flat. They arrived yesterday and I got a ride in the mobility assistance truck with them through Paddington! 95 minutes in the cab home, bit grim, but at least we could leave it behind, and the poor sod driving it just had to crack on with his day. He said the job involved a lot of prayer.

My parents really need to be on one floor, no maintenance and no need for a car. I am crossing my fingers that the viewings lined up this weekend will yield something they want to place an offer on.

TheNewlmprovedMrsMadEvans · 17/06/2022 19:09

Good luck Blueskies with your Parents home search ☺️
Spent £9 on ice creams and cold drinks so far , car parking will cost about £10 so it's not too bad but it's boiling here! 😁
We are in Cardiff, going to see Stereophonics and Tom Jones tonight l cannot wait !
Dd2 had 2 complimentary tickets for it as she is working there tonight ☺️👏👏👏
Waves to everyone hope we all had this weather ☺️👏

Decafflatteplease · 17/06/2022 19:24

em vitamin sea and beach breakfast sounds blissful and good for the soul

blue how did the flat viewing go. This is something I need to broach with my parents in the next couple of years

mrsevans enjoy the gig!

Also I've bought an air fryer! Kept looking at one in Asda and then the other day it has £10 off so went for it. Tonight we has pizza and chips so still out the oven on for the pizza but did chips I'm air fryer adlnd they were so quick and crispy. Notmallyas we only have 2 oven shelves I'd have to cook pizza first then keep then warm then cook chips and it's a bit of a hassle but with the air fryer k could so both at the same time.

Also I'm debating trying gousto / hello fresh we have a code for one of them for a cheap first week and I'm wondering if it will help with the mental load. .I'm already cooking 2-3 different meals a night most nights so that part wouldn't change but if me and DH has a box meal.at least I would only have to think of the children's meals then. Has anyone used them? Don't think they are very frugal though!

Decafflatteplease · 17/06/2022 19:25

So many typos there sorry and don't know where the random stars came from!

lifelongfrugaleer · 17/06/2022 19:35

Ooo enjoy the gig

which arifryer brand?

we’ve done both hello fresh and gusto and yes now and again i would recommend them but only with a voucher. Definitely helps the mental load

nsd today, put my scouts expenses in, horse expenses next week
food shop tomorrow but trying to eat the freezer

It was just an Asda brand one. It was meant to be £44 and was reduced to £34. It's not massive though but often I put the oven on for 4 chicken nuggets for Sen DC If the rest of us are having something cooked on the hob and that seems such a waste.

Alfiemoon1 · 17/06/2022 23:00

Evening all can finally get on without it giving me an error code or some weird count down thing
nsd as not been anywhere except work and just been to pick ds up from work
dh is off work for a 2 weeks but is dog sitting elsewhere so that’s an extra £250
need to get petrol tomorrow eek

Alfiemoon1 · 17/06/2022 23:38

Dd got a 2.1 for her dissertation she thought she would get a 2.2 so that’s great still waiting on her final grade. Cost me £48 yesterday to hire the cap and gown and after a meltdown she has ordered tickets for me and dh to go

The meltdown was obviously caused by the boyfriend wanting to go and she can only order 2 tickets and although I wouldn’t spoil her day she knows not to bring us together so after many excuses she doesn’t want to go be the centre of attention she has nothing to wear she would rather go on her own as feels bad my mum and sister can’t go. They told her they are happy to watch it on zoom it should be her parents that go I didn’t rise to it told her it was up to her and left it but she’s now really looking forward to it and wanting to also go out for a celebration meal with her cousins

lifelongfrugaleer · 18/06/2022 07:13

ThAts great news about dd results alfie. Sorry boyf is still such a feature

sounds like a great starter option decaf. Might pop to Asda myself

BigSkies2022 · 18/06/2022 08:20

Flat viewing going very well so far - loved the one they saw yesterday, more to view today. They have contacted the EA to get their place OTM right away. I'm very happy that seeing the places has confirmed them that this is the right thing to do. For those with older parents - broach the subject early and often, I'd say! And don't underestimate the benefits of doing it while still a couple - my mother is much more of a homemaker than my dad, and although she will need help, she will have very much her own ideas and get excited about the new project. Whereas dad would barely unpack a fork, and slide into despond. But we have a long way to go yet.

£33 at butchers. £57 for DS' steel-capped work boots for his summer job on construction sites. He will be working very hard!

Afternoon - congratulations to your daughter, and hope you enjoy the graduation day!

CurlsandCurves · 18/06/2022 09:15

Morning, it’s soooo much cooler here. I’ve got all the windows open to get a lovely cool breeze in.

@TheNewlmprovedMrsMadEvans how was the gig?

Congrats to your dd @Alfiemoon1

Hopefully a nsd today, nothing planned just a day at home. Dhs motorbike is going for its mot and I’m pottering round here.

Decafflatteplease · 18/06/2022 09:52

Morning all

that's great about the flat bigskies

lifelong i only got it this week so hopefully they are still on offer. Even if not on offer the original price of £44 is still very good

It's lovely and cool here too today, already been in the garden!

Going to be a bit of a spendy day here 😱 one teen needs new clothes so we are heading into town for the afternoon together we try to spend 1-1 time with the older ones when we can. Clothes shopping followed by a Costa I believe (although I have the app and take our own reusable cups so we get double beans to get to the free one faster)

Treat of a takeaway tonight for various reasons after a hellish week. Portions at the one we like are pretty big so we get 4 meals between 6 of us and it usually comes in around £26 which I think is very reasonable. Also we know the owner so often get something thrown in free eg spring rolls or a soup

Hope everyone has a lovely weekend

TheNewlmprovedMrsMadEvans · 18/06/2022 16:55

Afternoon everyone such a change in the weather! 😊
Thank you Decaff Life & Curls Tom Jones was brilliant, how the hell he can sing like he does at 82 l really do not know ! Stereophonics did all their hits & we had a fab time 🤗
If anyone wants to see the gig it's on BBCWales tonight and l can tell you it was fantastic Smile
Spent £20 in Primark on bits and bobs , sunglasses , trainer socks, toothbrushed, etc
10 in Morrisons & 16 in Lidl
Everything is so expensive !
Petrol £1.85 a litre in Sains spent 75 pounds filling up Hmm

TheNewlmprovedMrsMadEvans · 18/06/2022 16:56

Congratulations to your DD Alfie Smile

CurlsandCurves · 18/06/2022 18:29

Oooh I am very cross!!! Someone has stolen my Nectar points!

I just noticed literally 5 minutes ago when I logged into the app. 3000 points used in the Ladbrooke Grove store yesterday. We don’t live anywhere near London.

Does anyone know what they’re like for dealing with things like this? I can prove where both myself and dh were yesterday.

TheNewlmprovedMrsMadEvans · 18/06/2022 19:47

Curls there has been something going on with the Nectar points imho . Last week our points from the fuel went onto someone else's card , our receipt had someone else card on it and we couldn't get on the app for love nor money . This week it's back to normal but we have never seen this happen before . Imho they may have been able to access our cards . Good luck with your inquiry sorry you had them stolen .

Alfiemoon1 · 18/06/2022 21:25

Spends today £25 petrol for me I only have a little engine and it only half full £30 on diesel for dh no idea how far that has taken him
had my virgin bill through my offer has ended so it’s now £143 per month I thought they had to notify before it finished but there is no way I am paying that so going to haggle

I need to get organised been on a variable mortgage for years with the same company so need to look at getting a fixed rate have loads of little work pensions dotted all over the place no idea who most of them are with no idea where to start with it all I do have a main private pension was an old work pension when I ironically worked for a bank lol I pay into so am on the ball with that. Ds has a child trust fund never paid into it as we have our own savings accounts for them I have no idea who that is with either.

lifelongfrugaleer · 18/06/2022 21:46

Spendy day at scout fair today, lovely to see it busy though
then tea out and top gun film, which is excellent

marthasmum · 18/06/2022 22:38

Oo mrs I am just watching the stereophonic show concert on tv, is that the one you saw? Looks amazing and the lead singer is still rather handsome 😍
Great news on your DD alfie
Been spending on my teens today as well decaff - my boys have both had a growth spurt and I’m really noticing the difference in cost! It’s pretty much budgeted for though which is good.
Downloaded the Tesco Clubcard plus again and saved £15 on my big shop today, so got it back already. Using the scan and shop proved better than chucking everything cheap in the trolley at Aldi.
went to Costco for cheap petrol - £1.84 for diesel but the queue was ridiculous.
The beach sounds lovely em
tayto well done for your DD, my DD has been exhausted too - I’ve given her £50 this weekend to spend with her girlfriend as she’s been working so hard
gen I hope you’ve found your passport, you deserve a break!
curls I’d be cross too, that’s a lot of points!

ememem84 · 19/06/2022 07:37

I thought I’d posted but clearly didn’t.

beach was ace. So lovely. Sea swim was invigorating.

kids had fun.

Wolfcub · 19/06/2022 08:00

Great news on the 2:1 and graduation ceremony Alfie, and also great news Big on the retirement flat hunting.
Absolutely hear the petrol price worries, I spent £60 yesterday on less than 3/4 of a tank.

I've found myself reading lots of frugal type threads for inspiration
Contractors were supposed to come yesterday to rip the upstairs shower out to trace the leak. They didn't show. I am immensely irritated.
Ddog is in full knobhead mode, I think the heat is interfering with what little brain he has but this morning it resulted in me investigating what was in his mouth on a walk and ending up with a handful of 💩
Need to crack on with essay writing but having a cuppa in the garden first before I remove the grass seeds from said idiot-dog

lifelongfrugaleer · 19/06/2022 08:04
