Follow on from the old thread

This is a space / long running thread for people wanting tips on making life cheaper for what ever reason and support who have to make living less expensive. If you are new here just post away everyone is welcome.

Frugal tips from the hive mind so far....

Check your outgoing-are they essential, are you on the best deal
Loyalty cards for stores you regularly shop at
Meal plan
Annual budget rather than monthly for those, well annual, expenses
Second hand is fine for 90% of stuff
Sign up to money saving expert emails
Insulation at home.
Close curtains at dark and tuck behind rads
Foil behind external wall rad
Turn the heating down . Tropical houses are not necessary
Use the washing line when you can
Look out for food recycling scheme- bread and butter thing, company shop, too good to go type things
Do you have to buy that Christmas/ birthday present. Can you give time instead
Eat less meat (tho I’m rubbish at this)
Have a on toast day. Or baked potato weekly
Double up while the oven is on for a reheat meal or a bake. Save electric running the oven less.
Branded goods are not always the best
-Walk those short trips if possible, instead of using the car (I am the worst for doing this). Saves petrol, good exercise too.
-Combine car trips better too eg dropped DD off at an activity tonight, which is next to the supermarket.
Cancel sky, if you still want the programmes switch to Now Tv for a fraction of the price
Cancel any subscriptions you don't need. Check direct debits to make sure you're not paying for anything you no longer need by accident
Check all your bills, insurances etc are the cheapest you can get for the cover you need (the last bit is important)
If you can get a voucher, use a cash back site or have some sort of work discount (nhs, bluelight, Tesco, student etc) check before paying
Meal plan before you shop. Make extra to freeze for another day as it's often cheaper per kg to buy bigger packs of meat
Go veggie a couple of times a week
Aldi and Lidl are great but not if you're going to get sidetracked by the aisle of doom
An annual budget is essential but pay yourself first each month so money into the annual pot, into savings, off debt before anything else happens. Make sure there's a line in your budget for fun money even if it's a tiny amount, budgeting can be a grind otherwise
You will have patches of spendiness and demotivation, don't give up just start again from wherever you end up
Take your own drinks, snacks, food, picnic - Invariably cheaper and nicer
Make your own if you have a stocked baking cupboard and spice cupboard. Cheaper and nicer, tho building said cupboard can be ££ (costs can be reduced by a visit to your local international supermarket)
Aldi for baking stuff it’s fine.
Work out of season for clothes as it’s usually cheaper
i switched to a coffee subscription (coffee is my weakness) - so our local shop delivers me a 250g bag of ground coffee every 2 weeks (i have 4 in the cupboard currently) and i make my own morning coffee. the subscription is for 6 months and costs me £58 i think. a takeaway from the same shop is £2.80 a pop. so it is a money saver. I bought a Contigo cup (spendy but worth every penny). so take my coffee hot to work with me.

I'm also a fan of using it up. so tings like toiletries, stationary (i am also a notebook hoarder) food etc. not replacing until it's all gone (or all of one thing gone).

my Lloyds account does "save the change" so it rounds up a purchase and then moves the pence to my savings account.

I also pay myself first on payday and am trying to use the things we have- zoo membership - use it loads so worth the £160 a year cost. same with my gym membership i use it so get my moneys worth.

Also what you can save/be frugal on can be inversely related to your means. If you have more "spare" money per month it's easier to buy in bulk and choose things that are cheapest per kg. If you have less or no spare money this isn't possible to do and then you're looking at cheapest price per item rather than per kg.

Agree re taking own stuff although I do often forget but a good coffee cup and water bottle is a good investment if you can afford it

If you have a dog use something like all about dog food to work out what the best food is you can buy based on what you can afford to spend per day
I also give the clothes an extra spin in the washing machine before they go in the dryer, and dry outside whenever i can - currently not living at home, so limited to a washer dryer (which is crap) and an airer next to a rad which i hate.

im a big fan of using the freezer and freeze anything i can. we buy reduced items (like bread and keep it in the freezer as it saves it going off - we maybe get through a loaf every couple of weeks).
I know that credit cards are sometimes seen here as the work of the devil (on MN specifically not this thread) but if you have one use to to your advantage. Mine gives me money back in the form of M&S or amazon vouchers every quarter depending on how much I've spent. and as long as you pay it off every month it works.
Top Cashback for all internet purchases.
Join the library - many have free access to Audible, Libby (for magazines and newspapers) as well as having an amazing selection of books.
Consider how you cook things - residual heat cooking works really well for rice and any slow cooker recipe.
Grow herbs and salad leaves on a window sill
Grow soft fruit - your local allotment / neighbours with a raspberry cane/ strawberry / current / gooseberry will be more than happy to give you a cutting.
Look for local food pantries
If you need credit use a Credit Union. If you are saving support your local credit union by becoming one of their savers.

wreck.

WreckTangled · 10/06/2022 06:08

Thanks everyone. We're so sad. The dc sobbed all evening as did dh and I and I can't say I feel much better this morning. Need to get through work though. He really was the best cat.

Oh wreck I'm so sorry to hear this. It sounds like you all did the best you could. Lovely pic aswell hope you are ok. Unmumsnetty hugs!

Wolfcub · 10/06/2022 07:53

Morning all. Having a cuppa in the garden before today's madness starts. Had the gardener in yesterday as I'd been neglecting it and it's so much tidier. Workmen coming today to trace the leak, it's going to create loads of mess, also need to crack on with next uni assignment. Balance paid for holiday cottage this morning.

CurlsandCurves · 10/06/2022 08:24

So sorry to hear about your cat, @WreckTangled . How are you all doing this morning?

As of today I’ve got 2 teens in the house, ds2 turns 13 today! Been very uneventful so far he opened his presents quickly before school.
Need to do a top up shop which includes cake and fizzy pop ahead of his sleepover tomorrow night. And I’ve ordered the obligatory giant helium balloon numbers for him and his mates to punch and mess about with all night long .

Taytocrisps · 10/06/2022 08:36

Awwww...... what a beautiful cat Wreck. Thinking of you this morning.

Curls happy birthday to your DS.

Timetoswitch · 10/06/2022 09:04

So sorry wreck 💐

Lots to do today, couple of appointments which had to be at certain times along with a couple more errands to do too. I’m going to be driving back and forth on myself all day, which is very frustrating with the petrol use!

Timetoswitch · 10/06/2022 09:04

Happy birthday curls DS!

AdoraBell · 10/06/2022 12:28

Sorry about your DCat Wreck

DH bought fuel, can’t remember how much it was now🤦‍♀️ but cheaper in the town than the local prices. Then he bought post gym brunch/early lunch. About £14 with coffees, after saying not buying food as worried about money Hmm

AdoraBell · 10/06/2022 12:30

Just checked the account, £12.55 in coffee shop and £26 on petrol.

ememem84 · 10/06/2022 13:07

wreck if I remember correctly he was a rescue? You gave him the best life xxx it’s heartbreaking though. I gave catcace an extra snuggle this morning. I’ll be devastated when her time comes. Xxx

£59 shoes for the dc
£8 passport pics for ds - can finally get his application sent off.
£7 coffee for me and the dc in town.

dinner tonight to celebrate dhs promotion. Just pizza express (so it’ll probably cost me a frigging fortune!!)

BigSkies2022 · 10/06/2022 13:15

What a gorgeous cat, Wreck. Absolutely lovely.

Taytocrisps · 10/06/2022 13:32

The vet rang and said DCat1 is a lot better today and I can collect him this evening. They've given him an antibiotic and a painkiller. They couldn't explain the dehydration (obviously I give him water but he never seems to drink it - I've always suspected he prefers to drink out of puddles). They said they could do some x-rays but they probably wouldn't show up anything so I declined. It will be expensive enough without the x-rays. I've to bring him back on Monday for follow up checks.

I got my new plant in the ground anyway and I clipped back a bushy shrub which grows up along the front of the shed and had gone very overgrown. There's still a small bit left at the base of the front of the shed which means I won't be able to access all of the shed when I'm painting. But the bit I can't reach will be hidden by the shrub anyway. The shrub produces lovely yellow pom pom flowers so I didn't want to eliminate it entirely. It was really easy to dig a hole for my new plant 'cos the ground is very soft from all the rain. I might pick up two new plants today and take advantage of the soft ground. Can't wait to get my shed painted. It will make such a difference to the garden. Feeling better now that I've made a start on all my jobs.

Right, better head to Woodies for the paint.

WreckTangled · 10/06/2022 13:37

Thanks everyone. Yes em he was. I'm so sad still, I feel exhausted, sick and shaky. I never would have thought it would affect me this much.

£65 lidl. Forgot milk. Couldn't get any flavoured water for ds' water bottle at school. No strawberries (shelters were pretty bare) and I can't buy coffee there. Lots of prices up I noticed today.

Alfiemoon1 · 10/06/2022 15:29

what a beautiful cat so sorry wreck

Wolfcub · 10/06/2022 17:58

Insurance company visit did not go well. Further visit and more mess and hassle now scheduled

With the help of two slow cookers, 1kg of chicken thighs and the storecupboard we have chicken tikka masala for tea and Thai green curry for the freezer

TheNewlmprovedMrsMadEvans · 10/06/2022 18:21

I am so sorry Wreck l know how much he meant to you all and he really was the most beautiful boy. I know you did everything you could do for him bless you all Flowers

TheNewlmprovedMrsMadEvans · 10/06/2022 18:23

Tayto so pleased your Dcat is better Flowers
Good luck to your Dd with her exams Smile
NSD for me today at last Hmm

Gensola · 11/06/2022 07:30

He was a gorgeous cat wreck 💖

I was out at a leaving do last night at work. Feeling pretty knackered today. Quiet day mooching is needed 😂 thinking iced coffee on the little square near where I live later and walk with a friend. Need to get some food in for dinner too.

lifelongfrugaleer · 11/06/2022 08:37

Day not quite as planned today so shopping will be done
prep for events I’m helping At tomorrow too

Taytocrisps · 11/06/2022 08:44

Morning everyone. I've a hair appointment at 9.30 and then I'm meeting two friends for coffee/brunch. It will be so good to have a catch up.

When I get back, I'm going to wash down the shed in preparation for painting it. Then plant my new plants.

I also need to look at my budget and figure out how much money I should transfer from my Credit Union account, to cover holiday spending money and cattery fees. The vet bill threw a bit of a spanner in the works. Good thing we just booked for a week away and not a fortnight away. Life/financial admin. takes up so much time, doesn't it? I can never understand people on MN who say they get it all done in 10 minutes over their lunch break. But maybe I'm just a bit slow Smile.

I also need to have a quick chat with my neighbour, about DD's holiday in Portugal. We've booked a youth hostel for the girls and paid a deposit, but it says the balance must be paid on arrival, with the same card that was used to pay the deposit (mine). There doesn't seem to be any option to pay it in advance. Obviously I don't really want to give my debit card to DD for a week. Hmmm.........

BigSkies2022 · 11/06/2022 09:26

Lovely day here. I need to spend some time in the garden tidying up. Some of the shrubs are actually getting too big for me to trim, even with a tall stepladder and long shears. Might need to recruit the occasional services of a gardener, which in our tiny patch seems a bit nutty. Will also be spraying the garage roof timbers with anti-woodworm treatment. DIY job in preference to paying someone £200 to do it. And there is a huge fox hole under the fence, so need to block it up (it worries the dog apart from anything else).

DH was out on a work meeting last night, so I indulged in a baked potato (well, 2, actually) with loads of butter and salad in front the telly. I quite enjoy these occasional reversions to student habits (although these days I am paying for the energy to cook the potato).

Timetoswitch · 11/06/2022 16:20

Went round to Dmum to put in a new vacuum cleaner bag. She hasn’t vacuumed since before Ddad went into hospital/care home 🤢Apparently her carpets/floor don’t get dirty. We then vacuumed the house. The gritty sucking up noise of dirt was incredible.

Cut the front grass.

Ordered some gifts for family birthdays and Father’s Day.

TheNewlmprovedMrsMadEvans · 11/06/2022 17:36

Afternoon everyone Smile
Been to Costco £23 and a massive Tesco £45 in Cardiff, very busy everywhere.
Beautiful weather here at last hope eveyone has had this too Smile

Unescorted · 11/06/2022 17:59

wreck I am so sorry to hear that about your beautiful cat.

Wolf that all sounds so expensive / disruptive.

tayto I hope your cat has found a nice warm place to recover.

Time here it always does the vac grit swirl of doom because of all the bikes. It is satisfying to get rid of it all.

I have a work do this week - nothing to wear so I have spent the day making a frock.... I would have just worn something slightly smarter than a pair of PJs but I have been shortlisted for an award & there is an outside chance I will have to go up on stage. I hope to get away with trainers still. I have gone for a super stretchy patterned fabric - comfort and disguising the lumps and bumps. Unfortunately the bias tape has grown legs and walked so I will have to finish it off tomorrow.

DD came home on Thursday for a single night. I miss her so much.
