Follow on from the old thread

This is a space / long running thread for people wanting tips on making life cheaper for what ever reason and support who have to make living less expensive. If you are new here just post away everyone is welcome.

Frugal tips from the hive mind so far....

Check your outgoing-are they essential, are you on the best deal
Loyalty cards for stores you regularly shop at
Meal plan
Annual budget rather than monthly for those, well annual, expenses
Second hand is fine for 90% of stuff
Sign up to money saving expert emails
Insulation at home.
Close curtains at dark and tuck behind rads
Foil behind external wall rad
Turn the heating down . Tropical houses are not necessary
Use the washing line when you can
Look out for food recycling scheme- bread and butter thing, company shop, too good to go type things
Do you have to buy that Christmas/ birthday present. Can you give time instead
Eat less meat (tho I’m rubbish at this)
Have a on toast day. Or baked potato weekly
Double up while the oven is on for a reheat meal or a bake. Save electric running the oven less.
Branded goods are not always the best
-Walk those short trips if possible, instead of using the car (I am the worst for doing this). Saves petrol, good exercise too.
-Combine car trips better too eg dropped DD off at an activity tonight, which is next to the supermarket.
Cancel sky, if you still want the programmes switch to Now Tv for a fraction of the price
Cancel any subscriptions you don't need. Check direct debits to make sure you're not paying for anything you no longer need by accident
Check all your bills, insurances etc are the cheapest you can get for the cover you need (the last bit is important)
If you can get a voucher, use a cash back site or have some sort of work discount (nhs, bluelight, Tesco, student etc) check before paying
Meal plan before you shop. Make extra to freeze for another day as it's often cheaper per kg to buy bigger packs of meat
Go veggie a couple of times a week
Aldi and Lidl are great but not if you're going to get sidetracked by the aisle of doom
An annual budget is essential but pay yourself first each month so money into the annual pot, into savings, off debt before anything else happens. Make sure there's a line in your budget for fun money even if it's a tiny amount, budgeting can be a grind otherwise
You will have patches of spendiness and demotivation, don't give up just start again from wherever you end up
Take your own drinks, snacks, food, picnic - Invariably cheaper and nicer
Make your own if you have a stocked baking cupboard and spice cupboard. Cheaper and nicer, tho building said cupboard can be ££ (costs can be reduced by a visit to your local international supermarket)
Aldi for baking stuff it’s fine.
Work out of season for clothes as it’s usually cheaper
i switched to a coffee subscription (coffee is my weakness) - so our local shop delivers me a 250g bag of ground coffee every 2 weeks (i have 4 in the cupboard currently) and i make my own morning coffee. the subscription is for 6 months and costs me £58 i think. a takeaway from the same shop is £2.80 a pop. so it is a money saver. I bought a Contigo cup (spendy but worth every penny). so take my coffee hot to work with me.

I'm also a fan of using it up. so tings like toiletries, stationary (i am also a notebook hoarder) food etc. not replacing until it's all gone (or all of one thing gone).

my Lloyds account does "save the change" so it rounds up a purchase and then moves the pence to my savings account.

I also pay myself first on payday and am trying to use the things we have- zoo membership - use it loads so worth the £160 a year cost. same with my gym membership i use it so get my moneys worth.

Also what you can save/be frugal on can be inversely related to your means. If you have more "spare" money per month it's easier to buy in bulk and choose things that are cheapest per kg. If you have less or no spare money this isn't possible to do and then you're looking at cheapest price per item rather than per kg.

Agree re taking own stuff although I do often forget but a good coffee cup and water bottle is a good investment if you can afford it

If you have a dog use something like all about dog food to work out what the best food is you can buy based on what you can afford to spend per day
I also give the clothes an extra spin in the washing machine before they go in the dryer, and dry outside whenever i can - currently not living at home, so limited to a washer dryer (which is crap) and an airer next to a rad which i hate.

im a big fan of using the freezer and freeze anything i can. we buy reduced items (like bread and keep it in the freezer as it saves it going off - we maybe get through a loaf every couple of weeks).
I know that credit cards are sometimes seen here as the work of the devil (on MN specifically not this thread) but if you have one use to to your advantage. Mine gives me money back in the form of M&S or amazon vouchers every quarter depending on how much I've spent. and as long as you pay it off every month it works.
Top Cashback for all internet purchases.
Join the library - many have free access to Audible, Libby (for magazines and newspapers) as well as having an amazing selection of books.
Consider how you cook things - residual heat cooking works really well for rice and any slow cooker recipe.
Grow herbs and salad leaves on a window sill
Grow soft fruit - your local allotment / neighbours with a raspberry cane/ strawberry / current / gooseberry will be more than happy to give you a cutting.
Look for local food pantries
If you need credit use a Credit Union. If you are saving support your local credit union by becoming one of their savers.

DH and I both bought petrol yesterday. Between us we spent £120.

£30 on activities for the DC.

Looking at the finances, I need a better paid job or to work more hours 😩 I might need to get a 2nd job, if the first option isn’t forth coming.

AdoraBell · 08/06/2022 18:10

£4.50-ish today, fruit juice and salad salad bits.

Petrol here is £189.9 still £170 in town.

Unescorted · 08/06/2022 18:37

North sorry to hear it is stressful with you Mum.

Wreck does that mean you have to pay 2 x the excess? I hope not.

Time I see more and more people saying they need a second job / pay rise / more hours. We wouldn't manage if DH wasn't getting more hours.

DH & DS have earnt their keep this week - they have averted another garage visit by replacing a relay switch. Estimated saving £150.

I hope not too, I did think that but then as it'll all be part of the same claim I don't think I will have to. He's still very unwell, I think we will be nearing the top end of our insurance limit and paying hundreds still out of our own pocket. I think it might actually wipe our savings.

Taytocrisps · 08/06/2022 21:08

Hi everyone,

busy few weeks here. DD started her state exams today, so I've taken a week or so off to make life easier for her. Means I'm cooking all the dinners and cleaning up and doing all the laundry and emptying the cat litter trays etc. She can focus 100% on her exams and studying. She said Day 1 (English Paper 1 and Home Economics) went ok. Five more days to go.

We're usually guaranteed fine weather during the exams but we've had a lot of rain lately and today's been more of the same - windy/rainy/sunny. My back garden looks like a jungle 'cos my lawn mower (which I just bought a year) ago stopped working. It's still under guarantee so they'll repair it free of charge. I brought it back to the shop and I'm waiting to hear back from them. I need to get out and strim the garden. I also want to paint my shed.

Sorted out a bit of admin. stuff today and paid some bills. Then I drove to the big town to stock up on cat stuff and groceries.

Spends today

€2.20 - bread for breakfast in local shop

€87.25 - bin collection charges (covers three months)

€50 - charge for grass cutting in my estate

€13.50 - plant support frame in garden centre

€40.00 - cat litter and food

€5.87 - meat in butchers's

€94.16 - Tesco shop

€1.40 - car parking fee

The Tesco bill was actually over €100 but I had a few vouchers. You're probably thinking that's really expensive for two people but I stocked up on lots of special offers so some of the groceries will see me through to the end of the month. I'm thinking of going back to a monthly shop in Tesco for stuff like cereal, tinned foods, loo rolls, detergent etc. and then just a smaller weekly top up shop in my nearer (but more expensive) supermarket. I used to do this but stopped during Covid. I priced the cat litter and it's cheaper there than the pet shop.

Like everyone else, I'm thinking ahead to winter and what our energy bills will be like then. I'm trying to put money aside for my home heating oil for the autumn. I did a quick check just now and 1000 litres of home heating oil is €1,440! Kind of regretting my holiday now (we're going to Lanzarote) but we booked in 2020 and then kept putting it back. The holiday itself is paid for but I'll need spending money for the week that we'll be there. I'm not cancelling the holiday but I won't be making any commitments for 2023 until I see how things pan out.

Gensola · 08/06/2022 21:23

tayto I’m a bit worried about spending money for our honeymoon, also cancelled and rebooked 3 times since 2020 when we got married in lockdown! We have paid for the accommodation and flights etc already plus travel insurance and hire car, buses to airport, but it will be spendy when we are there. We are self catering so hoping to save that way by having breakfast in, pack lunches/picnic for beach and then dinner out. less than 4 weeks til we go now, starting to worry that the airport chaos will stop us going 🤪
£40 in M&S on tights for work and three T shirts for holiday.

ememem84 · 09/06/2022 06:37

Morning all.

ds stayed home with DH yesterday. Or so I thought. Turns out by 12 ds was bouncing off the walls so DH enlisted the help of my parents who took ds out. Grandma and grandad to the rescue!

ds is going back to nursery today.

last day of work for me this week today! I only do 4 days but haven’t done “my”
full week for a long time now for one reason or another.

WreckTangled · 09/06/2022 07:08

I need to get fuel today. Eugh.

Wolfcub · 09/06/2022 07:34

Morning all. Totally understand the being worried about spending, I feel the same. Followed Martin Lewis's advice yesterday and took advantage of a fixed energy deal which means bills will be even more eye watering but hopefully insulated a bit from the further rise in January.

Received my £150 council tax rebate and gave it straight to British Gas.

WreckTangled · 09/06/2022 07:40

We still haven't fixed. We want to move somewhen so figured we might as well just stay on the standard rate and freeze in winter if we're still here

Gensola · 09/06/2022 09:08

I fixed back in Oct 21, against Martin Lewis advice then but glad I did it, I thought I’d rather know what I’m paying even if it was above the price cap at that time, prices have risen since so now I’m well under the cap. I think we are fixed until Oct 23. Our bill has still almost doubled for same/slightly lower useage.

Taytocrisps · 09/06/2022 09:08

It's raining cats and dogs here. I'm sitting wrapped up in a blanket (the house is chilly, even though it's June) looking up things to do in Lanzarote and dreaming of blue skies and sunshine.

Hoping the rain clears off so I can dig a hole in the border for my new plant.

DD is watching last night's Love Island before she gets stuck into her study. She has English Paper 2 this afternoon.

I've ordered paint for my shed. Waiting for confirmation that they've reserved it for me, before I head off to collect it.

I've arranged to meet two friends for breakfast on Saturday but I just realized I've double booked myself and I've a hair appointment for the same time.

Wreck I need to get fuel today also. I remember during the recession/banks bailout hearing about some motorist who got stranded because they couldn't afford to buy petrol and were trying to eke it out until pay day. Poverty causes so much stress.

Unescorted that's a very comprehensive list of money saving tips in your OP. Very thoughtful of you to spend time compiling it.

BigSkies2022 · 09/06/2022 09:26

Morning all. Lovely day here, and temperatures creeping up. I have been rather lazy since returning from our weekend away - not doing much more than catching up on chores.

Wreck - I'm very sorry about your cat. It's miserable when pets are ill, and to add financial stress to it is horrible. Fingers crossed.

Spent £37 in Aldi yesterday. Would have been a bit more but their shelves were bare of a few of our usual - things like cheese slices (I know, I know, but DH really likes them) and olive oil. I will need to buy fruit and eggs at the weekend, and DH will want naicer bread than Aldi's, but that should get us through to next week, when I will need to shop for three extra adults staying and a big family get together lunch on the 19th. So the money in the JA will run out before the middle of the month, once all DDs are taken into consideration.

On the plus side, we have already paid for the summer holiday (a week in Devon, not the most glitzy) and did that from the JA, so topping it up to feed ourselves this month isn't perhaps too bad management.

We fixed with E.ON last October, so we're currently paying pre-rise prices. I am trying to make overpayments where I can, and build up a bit of a war chest for this October, when we're going to be hit with all the prices rises we've hitherto avoided all at once. E.ON are offering fixes to existing customers which are at present around 35% below the price cap (according to ML) so it might not be as bad as it could be.

Have just switched to a new raw food regime for dog. £54 for the first order. If he likes it, this should be cheaper because the recommended daily amount is rather less than his current regime. We'll see - from a puppy, his appetite has always been greater than the recommendations, and he's not overweight.

Decafflatteplease · 09/06/2022 11:12

Morning all,

It's chilly here too tayto I'm currently sat wearing DHs dressing gown on top of my clothes it's so much warmer than my dressing gown think I'll have to invest in a men's one for the winter!

On my own today, should be a nsd day. Just having a catch up day, doing some sewing, some planting, some laundry, prepping dinner, doing some admin. Might even sneak in nap as it's that time of the month and I'm in pain and feel uurgh. Random selection of things for lunch in a bit too, using up bits and bobs out of the fridge so it's falafel, hummus and carrots, boiled egg and and apple. Might have that in front of the TV in a bit!

Hows dcat doing wreck

Taytocrisps · 09/06/2022 11:43

It's not just me who thinks it's cold. DD was about to put on the heating but I explained about the oil prices and told her to put on another layer and/or plug in the radiator for a little bit. My phone says it's 15 degrees (feels like 13 degrees) which isn't THAT cold. I think it's just one of those days where it's colder inside than outside. And she's sitting still for long periods studying.

I phoned the bank and left yet another message for the person who is supposed to be dealing with my mortgage application. I've sent her a couple of e-mails over the past few weeks but she hasn't replied to them. Sick of this shit now. I'm thinking I might just drop into the branch and ask for her. But they'll probably ask me if I have an appointment and then tell me that I need to make an appointment. It did cross my mind that she may have left the bank but then surely they'd have deactivated her e-mail address.

My paint is ready so I'll drop DD off for her afternoon exam and then head to Woodie's (DIY shop/Garden Centre) to collect it.

My phone says it's due to rain every day for the next week except for Monday - how depressing is that? Guess I'll be doing my painting on Monday so.

ememem84 · 09/06/2022 12:21

I wish we could fix our energy. But we can’t. Downside of only having one provider. Over a barrel and it’s either pay lectrics or dont

Taytocrisps · 09/06/2022 14:40

What a difference a few hours makes. I'm currently sitting having a cuppa while the vet does some blood tests on DCat1. He started making some ominous grunting noises and was shaking in a rather alarming manner. DD has gone off to her exam all stressed and tearful 'cos she's devoted to DCat1. Having a Fuck It latte and a cake.

WreckTangled · 09/06/2022 14:54

Decaff not great. I had a call just before bed to get a DNAR in place 😭 I couldn't sleep after that but he made it through the night. He's currently critical but stable. They're going to update me shortly I think as I've been working today, I did tell them to call if something happened and I haven't heard anything so hoping that's a good sign. They also want some money...

£63 petrol
£39 later for a wax. Should cancel but it's too short notice and I could do with some time out. Even if it's not the most relaxing Grin

Taytocrisps · 09/06/2022 17:26

I'm back from the vet. The blood tests didn't show up anything major but they think he has a respiratory infection and is a bit dehydrated. They're keeping him in overnight to re-hydrate him but there won't actually be anyone there to keep an eye on him overnight. If he makes it through the night, they'll ring me in the morning with an update. Fingers crossed...........

Wreck sorry to hear you have cat woes also.

In other news, the ECB is raising interest rates which will affect me as I have a tracker mortgage. At this stage, I've paid off a fair bit of the capital, so I'm hoping any mortgage increase will be minimal. I was listening to the radio on the way to/from the vet's and all of the news stories were about inflation and the increased cost of living. They interviewed a spokesperson from a charity and she said that one third of the calls they receive are about help with food. She said people perceive food as a flexible cost (as opposed to inflexible costs like mortgage/rent/bills) so when there's a squeeze, people turn to food first to make cutbacks. That's a depressing statistic.

WreckTangled · 09/06/2022 18:35

Oh no tayto. It's bad news here, we've got to have him pts I'm just trying to muster up the courage to tell the dc without crying...

Gensola · 09/06/2022 18:39

so sorry wreck 😭💖💐

Wolfcub · 09/06/2022 19:12

Wreck so sorry to hear about dcat, you've done absolutely everything you could for him

Tayto glad it was better news for you and hope dd wasn't too badly affected before her exam

Taytocrisps · 09/06/2022 19:37

Oh Wreck I'm so sorry to hear that news. Big hugs.

ememem84 · 09/06/2022 20:24

Oh wreck I’m so so sorry xxxx
