Follow on from the old thread

This is a space / long running thread for people wanting tips on making life cheaper for what ever reason and support who have to make living less expensive. If you are new here just post away everyone is welcome.

Frugal tips from the hive mind so far....

Check your outgoing-are they essential, are you on the best deal
Loyalty cards for stores you regularly shop at
Meal plan
Annual budget rather than monthly for those, well annual, expenses
Second hand is fine for 90% of stuff
Sign up to money saving expert emails
Insulation at home.
Close curtains at dark and tuck behind rads
Foil behind external wall rad
Turn the heating down . Tropical houses are not necessary
Use the washing line when you can
Look out for food recycling scheme- bread and butter thing, company shop, too good to go type things
Do you have to buy that Christmas/ birthday present. Can you give time instead
Eat less meat (tho I’m rubbish at this)
Have a on toast day. Or baked potato weekly
Double up while the oven is on for a reheat meal or a bake. Save electric running the oven less.
Branded goods are not always the best
-Walk those short trips if possible, instead of using the car (I am the worst for doing this). Saves petrol, good exercise too.
-Combine car trips better too eg dropped DD off at an activity tonight, which is next to the supermarket.
Cancel sky, if you still want the programmes switch to Now Tv for a fraction of the price
Cancel any subscriptions you don't need. Check direct debits to make sure you're not paying for anything you no longer need by accident
Check all your bills, insurances etc are the cheapest you can get for the cover you need (the last bit is important)
If you can get a voucher, use a cash back site or have some sort of work discount (nhs, bluelight, Tesco, student etc) check before paying
Meal plan before you shop. Make extra to freeze for another day as it's often cheaper per kg to buy bigger packs of meat
Go veggie a couple of times a week
Aldi and Lidl are great but not if you're going to get sidetracked by the aisle of doom
An annual budget is essential but pay yourself first each month so money into the annual pot, into savings, off debt before anything else happens. Make sure there's a line in your budget for fun money even if it's a tiny amount, budgeting can be a grind otherwise
You will have patches of spendiness and demotivation, don't give up just start again from wherever you end up
Take your own drinks, snacks, food, picnic - Invariably cheaper and nicer
Make your own if you have a stocked baking cupboard and spice cupboard. Cheaper and nicer, tho building said cupboard can be ££ (costs can be reduced by a visit to your local international supermarket)
Aldi for baking stuff it’s fine.
Work out of season for clothes as it’s usually cheaper
i switched to a coffee subscription (coffee is my weakness) - so our local shop delivers me a 250g bag of ground coffee every 2 weeks (i have 4 in the cupboard currently) and i make my own morning coffee. the subscription is for 6 months and costs me £58 i think. a takeaway from the same shop is £2.80 a pop. so it is a money saver. I bought a Contigo cup (spendy but worth every penny). so take my coffee hot to work with me.

I'm also a fan of using it up. so tings like toiletries, stationary (i am also a notebook hoarder) food etc. not replacing until it's all gone (or all of one thing gone).

my Lloyds account does "save the change" so it rounds up a purchase and then moves the pence to my savings account.

I also pay myself first on payday and am trying to use the things we have- zoo membership - use it loads so worth the £160 a year cost. same with my gym membership i use it so get my moneys worth.

Also what you can save/be frugal on can be inversely related to your means. If you have more "spare" money per month it's easier to buy in bulk and choose things that are cheapest per kg. If you have less or no spare money this isn't possible to do and then you're looking at cheapest price per item rather than per kg.

Agree re taking own stuff although I do often forget but a good coffee cup and water bottle is a good investment if you can afford it

If you have a dog use something like all about dog food to work out what the best food is you can buy based on what you can afford to spend per day
I also give the clothes an extra spin in the washing machine before they go in the dryer, and dry outside whenever i can - currently not living at home, so limited to a washer dryer (which is crap) and an airer next to a rad which i hate.

im a big fan of using the freezer and freeze anything i can. we buy reduced items (like bread and keep it in the freezer as it saves it going off - we maybe get through a loaf every couple of weeks).
I know that credit cards are sometimes seen here as the work of the devil (on MN specifically not this thread) but if you have one use to to your advantage. Mine gives me money back in the form of M&S or amazon vouchers every quarter depending on how much I've spent. and as long as you pay it off every month it works.
Top Cashback for all internet purchases.
Join the library - many have free access to Audible, Libby (for magazines and newspapers) as well as having an amazing selection of books.
Consider how you cook things - residual heat cooking works really well for rice and any slow cooker recipe.
Grow herbs and salad leaves on a window sill
Grow soft fruit - your local allotment / neighbours with a raspberry cane/ strawberry / current / gooseberry will be more than happy to give you a cutting.
Look for local food pantries
If you need credit use a Credit Union. If you are saving support your local credit union by becoming one of their savers.

Haha em at the salon I go to they get you to lie on your back and pull your knees up to your chin.

£317 vets and he has to go back tomorrow.

But surely that is a recipe for farts?!?! 😂

the lady who does my waxing said that sugaring hurts way less and is quicker. She is apparently hopefully getting the sugaring stuff in time for my next appointment so we’re going to give that a go.

WreckTangled · 06/06/2022 21:05

Pahahaha 😂 I suppose it gives you something else to concentrate on rather than the pain! Always good to practice the pelvic floor exercises...

CurlsandCurves · 06/06/2022 21:11

love to all with poorly pets xx

Food shop today. Approx £20 over but I was about £30 under last week so swings and roundabouts.

DH helped my dad with his car this weekend. He was only there about 20 mins but then dad calls to thank him and to tell us he’s sent us some money as. I did tell him there’s no need ( he does this every time!) but bless him he said it’s nice having us around. So that’s going to be an extra payment to the energy account.

ememem84 · 06/06/2022 21:20

curls that’s so nice of your dad.

ememem84 · 07/06/2022 09:08

working from home today. ds isn't well so he's set up on the couch with tv duvet drinks and cat face for company. he has a sore throat, a bit of a temperature and a cough. poor babooo.

seemingly it's easy enough to wfh with just him here though - as he's settled.

today should be an nsd though - its not like i can go anywhere with a poorly kid!

WreckTangled · 07/06/2022 09:08

Another £480 for today minimum. More if they have to do imaging. Will definitely have to claim through the insurance.

Decafflatteplease · 07/06/2022 09:41

Hope your cat is on the mend @WreckTangled and your DS @ememem84

Should be a nsd again here today, just toddler and I at home today, no plans apart from school run later on. Oh and we are potty training 😱

I'm thinking of getting an airfryer has anyone got one. Mainly for the savings tbh as the other day I put the oven on for literally 4 chicken nuggets. Can't be doing that soon when our deal ends and we are onto the expensive tarrif! But you can't cook seperate things in them like you can on different shelves in the oven can you? Also the only place it can go in our small kitchen is on top of the microwave and I'm not sure if that's safe.

Re energy bills we've just had our monthly statement in and I've compared it with the last 6 months or so and our electricity use seems fairly stable all through that time but our gas is going down as haven't had heating on for a few months now and we are trying to have the hot water on less we have the type where you need to heat up the hot water before you want to use it. We are still paying the same each month though and we have credit on our account. This is the last month on fixed rate though and then prices and standing charge literally double. I think we get the full money thing though from the government soon.

ememem84 · 07/06/2022 12:00

@Decafflatteplease i really want an air fryer - only to try making pasta chips i keep seeing on social media..... but am loathe to buy one just for that - i think there should be some sort of loan system on these. like a library. a try before you buy thing i just dont think we'd use it

a colleague has one though and i think they are heading to Thailand for 3 weeks or so this year, his wife is thai, so i might see if i can borrow it whilst they're away.

storage is the other issue for me. although we have space in the kitchen i like having the countertops fairly clean and uncluttered so i think having something out all the time would annoy me - but then again if its away i would forget its there.

the next project we have here is ds' room. he needs a new bed. and we promised we'd do up his room for him before he starts big school.

i also need to tidy up in the garage and get the shelving units we have in there fixed to the walls. as one almost fell on me the other day i want to get my baking gear in there - the tins etc that i dont use often. just to free up space in the kitchen

lifelongfrugaleer · 07/06/2022 13:46

I e been looking at airfryers too and want to try before I buy

Gensola · 07/06/2022 13:48

em decaf I would love an air fryer - I have a small kitchen though so have been holding off. If anyone gives us money at the wedding party (not assuming they will at all) an air fryer is on the list of things I’d get along with an olive tree in a pot and a new front door 😂

WreckTangled · 07/06/2022 13:59

The air fryers are always on offer on Black Friday, seems to be the best time to get one. I want one too but also not sure if it would be a wasted purchase

ememem84 · 07/06/2022 14:28

oooh an olive tree! i hate olives but love the look of the tree. we bought one for ddad years ago and its huge now. never had any olives though .

we also bought him a lemon tree - and dm decided to plant sweet peas around it in a circle. they stunted its growth. and its never lemoned. unlike mine which grew lemons last year. fingers crossed for more lemons this year.

ememem84 · 07/06/2022 14:28

am flitting between work, watching cartoons with ds, and playing spelling bee on the new york times website. i've also done the guardian crossword today

ouch vet bills

WreckTangled · 07/06/2022 17:55

He's not doing any better unfortunately. We're up to £2500 but the insurance should be all sorted. We will have to pay 15% though due to his age. I'm just waiting for the vet to call back and see what happened with the surgery they're doing.

Unescorted · 07/06/2022 18:22

wreck poor cat. ☹️

I keep looking at air fryers too. Now the kids are nearly fledged it seems wasteful to put the oven on for 2. Maybe when DS goes to uni. Whoever cracks first let us know how you get on.

Timetoswitch · 07/06/2022 18:32

I’ve got an air fryer, had it for a few years, but the only thing I’ve ever cooked in it is sweet potato pieces 😊 I like them when I don’t forget and leave them in there too long. I’m not an enthusiastic cook!

Poor wreckcat

marthasmum · 07/06/2022 20:38

We get the flags out here when I shave my legs 😂 I think the last time I had a bikini wax was when I was heavily pregnant with DD who has just turned 18. So I salute you in your pursuit of beauty em, hope Mr em is grateful!
Spendy days here due to DD’s birthday and half term. Need to reset when the financial month starts again for me (when DH gets paid on 18th).
did manage to chase up my £150 fuel rebate as we are in band C and I’ve not got it yet. Apparently there is a ‘discrepancy’ as the bill is in DPs name and it’s paid out of the joint account, but their records only show my name on that account (not married, different surnames). So they have to check this out which could take months.
I had to restrain myself from pointing out that this discrepancy hasn’t caused any problems for the months and years they’ve been taking money from me…only when it’s time for them to pay me!!

Wolfcub · 07/06/2022 20:58

Martha I have the same issue. I've filled out all the stupid forms but still waiting to be paid. This is because they had my old name on the direct debit. The right name was on the council tax account, the bank account is in the right name. Council were informed of changes but clearly didn't properly update their records

Wreck, poor wreckcat, I hope he will be ok

Waxing is for top lips and eyebrows only

I've seen an air fryer with two separate little drawers. If I can't replace this bastard oven soon o may have to get one

lifelongfrugaleer · 07/06/2022 21:01

nsd today
poor wreck cat and poor wreck bank balance

marthasmum · 07/06/2022 21:04

Soz wreck meant to add, hope Wreckcat will recover soon x

WreckTangled · 07/06/2022 21:07

Dh called the council tax about our rebate and they said 'oh are you sure you haven't had it? You should have had it. We will have to get someone to call you in the next few days'. Fucking useless.

WreckCat has come round from his operation but needs transferring to an overnight vets which they've kindly offered to do for us (I'm pleased about this as it would be a 30 mile round trip for us ££££ annoyingly it means separate bills but hey ho. It seems like he's going to be ok but will need to be in for at least another 24 hours.

northender · 07/06/2022 23:26

Quick late post. Have been skim reading the thread. Not been posting much as stressful times here, problems with dmum's health.
Discounted gousto meal boxes are a great help at the moment. Lots of frugal stuff going on, baking, sewing, reading & gardening. All with stuff we already have & providing much needed distraction

Decafflatteplease · 08/06/2022 10:27

Aww wreck that's kind of the vet save you another hassle!

em how's your child today?

North sorry to hear about DM. I think it's important to fins time for simple pleasures like you say sewing reading gardening. I'm a full time carer for one of my DC they have complex needs and trying hard to make time for myself even though I find it hard to relax. They say you can't pour from a empty cup dont they? I like gardening too, and reading. A g and t, hot bath and a good book on my kindle keeps me (fairly) sane. I'm thinking of trying meal boxes too to take some of the mental load out. Already cooking 3 meals a night most nights anyway but potentially the boxes would mean I wouldn't have to think what DH and I are having we would have a box meal so I'd just have to plan the children.

Busy morning here and it's not even 1030 yet. Usual school runs, been to a meeting at school, been to the doctor's, just having a coffee now and doing some admin then off to Asda for a top.up, I've been switching to Lidl recently but we need lots of non food items today eg pe kit so Asda it is. Also need diesel. It's going down so fast as we always put £30 but I think I'll do £40 today. £189.9 when I drove past earlier, who reckins it will be even higher than that when I get there 🤣😱
