Follow on from the old thread

This is a space / long running thread for people wanting tips on making life cheaper for what ever reason and support who have to make living less expensive. If you are new here just post away everyone is welcome.

Frugal tips from the hive mind so far....

Check your outgoing-are they essential, are you on the best deal
Loyalty cards for stores you regularly shop at
Meal plan
Annual budget rather than monthly for those, well annual, expenses
Second hand is fine for 90% of stuff
Sign up to money saving expert emails
Insulation at home.
Close curtains at dark and tuck behind rads
Foil behind external wall rad
Turn the heating down . Tropical houses are not necessary
Use the washing line when you can
Look out for food recycling scheme- bread and butter thing, company shop, too good to go type things
Do you have to buy that Christmas/ birthday present. Can you give time instead
Eat less meat (tho I’m rubbish at this)
Have a on toast day. Or baked potato weekly
Double up while the oven is on for a reheat meal or a bake. Save electric running the oven less.
Branded goods are not always the best
-Walk those short trips if possible, instead of using the car (I am the worst for doing this). Saves petrol, good exercise too.
-Combine car trips better too eg dropped DD off at an activity tonight, which is next to the supermarket.
Cancel sky, if you still want the programmes switch to Now Tv for a fraction of the price
Cancel any subscriptions you don't need. Check direct debits to make sure you're not paying for anything you no longer need by accident
Check all your bills, insurances etc are the cheapest you can get for the cover you need (the last bit is important)
If you can get a voucher, use a cash back site or have some sort of work discount (nhs, bluelight, Tesco, student etc) check before paying
Meal plan before you shop. Make extra to freeze for another day as it's often cheaper per kg to buy bigger packs of meat
Go veggie a couple of times a week
Aldi and Lidl are great but not if you're going to get sidetracked by the aisle of doom
An annual budget is essential but pay yourself first each month so money into the annual pot, into savings, off debt before anything else happens. Make sure there's a line in your budget for fun money even if it's a tiny amount, budgeting can be a grind otherwise
You will have patches of spendiness and demotivation, don't give up just start again from wherever you end up
Take your own drinks, snacks, food, picnic - Invariably cheaper and nicer
Make your own if you have a stocked baking cupboard and spice cupboard. Cheaper and nicer, tho building said cupboard can be ££ (costs can be reduced by a visit to your local international supermarket)
Aldi for baking stuff it’s fine.
Work out of season for clothes as it’s usually cheaper
i switched to a coffee subscription (coffee is my weakness) - so our local shop delivers me a 250g bag of ground coffee every 2 weeks (i have 4 in the cupboard currently) and i make my own morning coffee. the subscription is for 6 months and costs me £58 i think. a takeaway from the same shop is £2.80 a pop. so it is a money saver. I bought a Contigo cup (spendy but worth every penny). so take my coffee hot to work with me.

I'm also a fan of using it up. so tings like toiletries, stationary (i am also a notebook hoarder) food etc. not replacing until it's all gone (or all of one thing gone).

my Lloyds account does "save the change" so it rounds up a purchase and then moves the pence to my savings account.

I also pay myself first on payday and am trying to use the things we have- zoo membership - use it loads so worth the £160 a year cost. same with my gym membership i use it so get my moneys worth.

Also what you can save/be frugal on can be inversely related to your means. If you have more "spare" money per month it's easier to buy in bulk and choose things that are cheapest per kg. If you have less or no spare money this isn't possible to do and then you're looking at cheapest price per item rather than per kg.

Agree re taking own stuff although I do often forget but a good coffee cup and water bottle is a good investment if you can afford it

If you have a dog use something like all about dog food to work out what the best food is you can buy based on what you can afford to spend per day
I also give the clothes an extra spin in the washing machine before they go in the dryer, and dry outside whenever i can - currently not living at home, so limited to a washer dryer (which is crap) and an airer next to a rad which i hate.

im a big fan of using the freezer and freeze anything i can. we buy reduced items (like bread and keep it in the freezer as it saves it going off - we maybe get through a loaf every couple of weeks).
I know that credit cards are sometimes seen here as the work of the devil (on MN specifically not this thread) but if you have one use to to your advantage. Mine gives me money back in the form of M&S or amazon vouchers every quarter depending on how much I've spent. and as long as you pay it off every month it works.
Top Cashback for all internet purchases.
Join the library - many have free access to Audible, Libby (for magazines and newspapers) as well as having an amazing selection of books.
Consider how you cook things - residual heat cooking works really well for rice and any slow cooker recipe.
Grow herbs and salad leaves on a window sill
Grow soft fruit - your local allotment / neighbours with a raspberry cane/ strawberry / current / gooseberry will be more than happy to give you a cutting.
Look for local food pantries
If you need credit use a Credit Union. If you are saving support your local credit union by becoming one of their savers.

DH is working today. Dd going to a friends later.

Wolfcub · 03/06/2022 08:54

I'm baking a very expensive cake and my oven keeps cutting out every 30 seconds. Fml

CurlsandCurves · 03/06/2022 09:26

Pottering round the house this morning then work later.
There was a lovely party atmosphere in town yesterday. Today one street is being closed off for a street party, bring your own chairs tables food etc so that should be good. Hopefully good for business too.

WreckTangled · 03/06/2022 09:29

Oh no wolf is something tripping it?

I've got one load of washing out and am contemplating doing the bedding but iPhone weather is saying rain later even though met office is saying dry 🤔

Wolfcub · 03/06/2022 10:14

It's knackered Wreck, it's been doing this for a while but much more intermittently. I'm reluctant to replace it because the kitchen (was supposed to be) is due to be replaced this year. I may have to bite the bullet though

WreckTangled · 03/06/2022 16:16

£117.87 Tesco delivery but I'm seeking a refund for the grapes and banana as they're past their best and my rinse aid is only half full plus on the app it showed a salad bag as free but I've been charged for it. The delivery driver was really miserable too I was trying to make small talk and be really friendly and she just blanked me Blush maybe she struggled to hear or was having a bad day

TheNewlmprovedMrsMadEvans · 03/06/2022 17:03

Waves to everyone Smile

AdoraBell · 03/06/2022 21:48

That sounds annoying wolf did they cake turn out?

Hope you get the refunds Wreck

Went to a beacon lighting yesterday, BBQ, and met old friends from DCs school. DH paid for burgers and drinks. About £10.

Today, cream tea in village hall, free but donations welcome, DH put £10 in the kitty. He also spent about £13/15 in supermarket on bits for street party this weekend.

Unescorted · 04/06/2022 09:31

Morning.
I am avoiding the street party / jubilee things. Not my scene at all on so many levels.

I had an argument with my mother.... I was told I was jealous of my brother. I explained that I was not jealous but had very different values. I was asked to give examples.... Which I did. I am a very very bad person because I don't buy into the family cult. My mother is outraged that I may have different views to her and my bro... 🙄. I am frankly surprised that it has taken her so long to realise.

So my weekend has been very low spend and quiet. Blissful.

Hope you enjoy your quiet weekend unescorted

WreckTangled · 04/06/2022 10:04

Sorry to hear that unescorted hope you enjoy your weekend.

I'm not into the jubilee at all although we did go out last night as our friend was singing. Today is the local village fete which is always good. We will give the dc £10 each.

ememem84 · 04/06/2022 10:12

Jubilee party yesterday. It tipped down. We still bbq though. The dc danced in the rain. It was so warm too despite the rain so we had doors open.

so much food left.

Timetoswitch · 04/06/2022 11:34

17 degrees and cloudy. My DC are the only people on the beach, playing in the sea in their swimming costumes. Lots of people having a walk, wearing their winter coats 😂

Decafflatteplease · 04/06/2022 11:35

Hi all,

Should be a nsd day today, not up to much today, laundry, gardening and pottering mainly.

Jubilee party tomorrow

Had a good financial chat with DH the other night we sat down and looked through our accounts etc we realized we have around £500 a month left after bills and food although our food bill is massive really. I don't know if that alot or not tbh. That £500 is to cover car repairs 🤣, clothes, haircuts, parking, diesel, any birthday presents etc.

I think I mentioned the other day that we are going to have to pay nursery fees but we hadn't realised this. We thought we were entitled to 30 free hours and we currently get 15 but we want to up to 22 but when we applied online it said they will deduct the extra hours from our tax credits, which we hadn't realised, so I think we are going to have to pay rather than risk losing benefits. So it's around £130 a month to find. Bit it's term time only so some months would be cheaper. We may pay by half term that's what we do with school dinners etc and we know it's done then rather than remembering to do it every week. Hmm.

TheNewlmprovedMrsMadEvans · 04/06/2022 15:19

Afternoon everyone Smile
Have been to Cardiff Castle to see Prince William & Kate , they bought the children with them Smile They were so well behaved bless them !
It was wonderful , they talked to everyone for ages and everyone was thrilled to bits Grin
Spends £19 Morrisons

Decafflatteplease · 04/06/2022 15:30

Aww lovely @TheNewlmprovedMrsMadEvans

marthasmum · 04/06/2022 19:44

That doesn’t sound loads decaff although obviously all relative. Would it help to divide in into pots eg so much for clothes, car repairs etc? I’ve found that helps me to realise how much I actually need to put by (more than I think).
DP and I have had a couple of nice meet ups with old and new friends. We are starting to find our mojo of going out as a couple after years of being subsumed by kids needs!
unescorted I don’t know your age but I’m damn sure you’re old enough to have different views from your mother 😊. Hope you are able to hold your ground and enjoy the peace and quiet.

CurlsandCurves · 04/06/2022 23:50

We’ve just been on a date night to see the new Top Gun. I’ve been wanting to see it since before the pandemic when it was first announced. Dh really wasn’t keen but then surprised me with tickets, bless him. And he has conceded that it was very good. Managed to squeeze in an Aperol spritz at a nice bar after before catching the bus home.

Gensola · 05/06/2022 11:02

curls I am going to see that on Tuesday with a friend.
I have an essay due for my masters and another piece for a presentation at work so the jubilee weekend is coming to an end for me sadly after we go for brunch with a friend. Had such a nice time in London, pretty spendy but we’d set aside some £ and we haven’t gone too much over budget.

ememem84 · 05/06/2022 11:52

Ah the hell that is indoor soft play. £7.10 for the kids. And because of their ages we have to accompany them. Arse biscuits.

DH spent more on coffees and snacks than I did on entry. That’s how they get you isn’t it?!

I tagged DH in so I can enjoy coffee.

im dying to see top gun. However with the kids we need babysitters. I might go one evening next week by myself. On the premis that I have to “work late” #sneaky

Decafflatteplease · 05/06/2022 13:01

@CurlsandCurves that sounds like a lovely evening.

@ememem84 I hear you on the soft play. I hate the big ones as need to go around with the toddler and I get exhausted 🤣 there's a garden centre near us that has a very small soft play so you can see them all the time, DH and I quite like taking the younger ones there on a Sunday morning and having a coffee and a chat together and we can always see the children.

We are off to a jubilee garden party this afternoon. It's currently pouring down 🤔 says free admission but I presume we will have to pay for refreshments etc, im not entirely sure what's there tbh.

Spendy morning....£150 on school dinners for the half term. It's easier to do it in own big go rather than remembering every week.

WreckTangled · 05/06/2022 13:20

There's a jubilee picnic etc going on here this afternoon too. I'm not going, can't stand the whole thing.

£23 on gel removal and express mani for dd and I before we go back to work/school tomorrow. I've got a wax booked for Thursday too and that's basically all of my money gone for the month. Will have to borrow from savings I guess, I've got £250 in expenses coming from work at the end of the month so that's something.

ememem84 · 05/06/2022 14:01

I’ve got waxing tomorrow. Then nails the week after. My nails are too long at the moment.

WreckTangled · 05/06/2022 14:07

We're not allowed nail varnish at work. Will get them done again when I'm off in the summer if I can keep some length to them...

AdoraBell · 05/06/2022 17:58

£15 on cream tea.
DH topped up petrol as we were in town, 170.9 there as opposed to 180.9 locally. Think he spent £26.

groceries due tomorrow, should be £80-ish
