Follow on from the old thread

This is a space / long running thread for people wanting tips on making life cheaper for what ever reason and support who have to make living less expensive. If you are new here just post away everyone is welcome.

Frugal tips from the hive mind so far....

Check your outgoing-are they essential, are you on the best deal
Loyalty cards for stores you regularly shop at
Meal plan
Annual budget rather than monthly for those, well annual, expenses
Second hand is fine for 90% of stuff
Sign up to money saving expert emails
Insulation at home.
Close curtains at dark and tuck behind rads
Foil behind external wall rad
Turn the heating down . Tropical houses are not necessary
Use the washing line when you can
Look out for food recycling scheme- bread and butter thing, company shop, too good to go type things
Do you have to buy that Christmas/ birthday present. Can you give time instead
Eat less meat (tho I’m rubbish at this)
Have a on toast day. Or baked potato weekly
Double up while the oven is on for a reheat meal or a bake. Save electric running the oven less.
Branded goods are not always the best
-Walk those short trips if possible, instead of using the car (I am the worst for doing this). Saves petrol, good exercise too.
-Combine car trips better too eg dropped DD off at an activity tonight, which is next to the supermarket.
Cancel sky, if you still want the programmes switch to Now Tv for a fraction of the price
Cancel any subscriptions you don't need. Check direct debits to make sure you're not paying for anything you no longer need by accident
Check all your bills, insurances etc are the cheapest you can get for the cover you need (the last bit is important)
If you can get a voucher, use a cash back site or have some sort of work discount (nhs, bluelight, Tesco, student etc) check before paying
Meal plan before you shop. Make extra to freeze for another day as it's often cheaper per kg to buy bigger packs of meat
Go veggie a couple of times a week
Aldi and Lidl are great but not if you're going to get sidetracked by the aisle of doom
An annual budget is essential but pay yourself first each month so money into the annual pot, into savings, off debt before anything else happens. Make sure there's a line in your budget for fun money even if it's a tiny amount, budgeting can be a grind otherwise
You will have patches of spendiness and demotivation, don't give up just start again from wherever you end up
Take your own drinks, snacks, food, picnic - Invariably cheaper and nicer
Make your own if you have a stocked baking cupboard and spice cupboard. Cheaper and nicer, tho building said cupboard can be ££ (costs can be reduced by a visit to your local international supermarket)
Aldi for baking stuff it’s fine.
Work out of season for clothes as it’s usually cheaper
i switched to a coffee subscription (coffee is my weakness) - so our local shop delivers me a 250g bag of ground coffee every 2 weeks (i have 4 in the cupboard currently) and i make my own morning coffee. the subscription is for 6 months and costs me £58 i think. a takeaway from the same shop is £2.80 a pop. so it is a money saver. I bought a Contigo cup (spendy but worth every penny). so take my coffee hot to work with me.

I'm also a fan of using it up. so tings like toiletries, stationary (i am also a notebook hoarder) food etc. not replacing until it's all gone (or all of one thing gone).

my Lloyds account does "save the change" so it rounds up a purchase and then moves the pence to my savings account.

I also pay myself first on payday and am trying to use the things we have- zoo membership - use it loads so worth the £160 a year cost. same with my gym membership i use it so get my moneys worth.

Also what you can save/be frugal on can be inversely related to your means. If you have more "spare" money per month it's easier to buy in bulk and choose things that are cheapest per kg. If you have less or no spare money this isn't possible to do and then you're looking at cheapest price per item rather than per kg.

Agree re taking own stuff although I do often forget but a good coffee cup and water bottle is a good investment if you can afford it

If you have a dog use something like all about dog food to work out what the best food is you can buy based on what you can afford to spend per day
I also give the clothes an extra spin in the washing machine before they go in the dryer, and dry outside whenever i can - currently not living at home, so limited to a washer dryer (which is crap) and an airer next to a rad which i hate.

im a big fan of using the freezer and freeze anything i can. we buy reduced items (like bread and keep it in the freezer as it saves it going off - we maybe get through a loaf every couple of weeks).
I know that credit cards are sometimes seen here as the work of the devil (on MN specifically not this thread) but if you have one use to to your advantage. Mine gives me money back in the form of M&S or amazon vouchers every quarter depending on how much I've spent. and as long as you pay it off every month it works.
Top Cashback for all internet purchases.
Join the library - many have free access to Audible, Libby (for magazines and newspapers) as well as having an amazing selection of books.
Consider how you cook things - residual heat cooking works really well for rice and any slow cooker recipe.
Grow herbs and salad leaves on a window sill
Grow soft fruit - your local allotment / neighbours with a raspberry cane/ strawberry / current / gooseberry will be more than happy to give you a cutting.
Look for local food pantries
If you need credit use a Credit Union. If you are saving support your local credit union by becoming one of their savers.

It's more than just your feet...

Well I didn’t want to say “boobies” but yeah. It’s that one isn’t it…!

I toyed with the idea of putting jam inside the cupcakes. But meh. Too much work.

I love a cheese scone. Super cheese with sweet chilli cream cheese. Yummmmm.

im slightly annoyed at catface. She’s been meowing loudly and has woken the dc up. So I’ve sent them back to bed and am now downstairs. I’ve fed catface which is what she wanted and now she’s buggered off in the garden.

dh is still asleep. He resents any sort of getting up early. Then moans because he has no time for breakfast. If you get up and in the shower at 745 and we leave before 8 that is what happens.

lifelongfrugaleer · 01/06/2022 06:14

Cakes look ace

WreckTangled · 01/06/2022 06:29

Our cat still wakes us up most mornings by scratching on the bedroom door. He doesn't want anything, just wants to wake you up. If you open the door he just lays there looking at you wondering what you want Hmm

I'm taking the dc to a small posh town nearby today to look in the charity shop. I told them we could go to Wetherspoons for lunch which has made them happy Grin

Gensola · 01/06/2022 07:40

wreck 😂😂😂 no one would pay me - pay me to turn the camera off maybe lol

When I was at student at Uni I did once have a buyer on eBay ask me to send photos of my feet in shoes for £££ but it freaked me out so I didn’t.

slowish start today, gym then into work for class at 11, teaching through til 5.

CurlsandCurves · 01/06/2022 09:34

Lol at the only fans chat!

I’ve had a few days off at home. Payday was yesterday and very much appreciated! Bought all DS2’s birthday presents ready for next week. Some of that money I will get back because I bought enough for my mum and dad to claim to come from them. And some I’ve bought from Next so won’t have to pay till next month.

It was meant to be raining again here today but that’s changed to all day sun. So I’ve got this weeks bedding in the wash and will get what’s on the airers outside. After this coffee…

Decafflatteplease · 01/06/2022 10:00

Morning all,

Lol.at the only fans chat, I think people would pay me to turn the camera off 🤔

Anyway, fairly low spend day today. Still on my freezer using up mission so it's a freezer rummage for lunch and dinner today. Soup and crumpets for lunch and something with mince for tea, probably tacos.

One teen is off on a day out with their friends so we've given them £20 these teens are expensive 🤣 DH off for a haircut which is £9 I think. Rest of us are going to have a garden day, I've got alot less stuff growing this year so need to crack on really. Only tomatoes mange tout and strawberries so far. Hoping to plant courgettes and 2 types of beans today. And maybe some herbs. Love growing our own food and toddler loves it too!

Lovely and sunny here so hopefully get 2 loads of washing done and dried outside one on the line one on the airers.

WreckTangled · 01/06/2022 14:19

Spendy.

£9.65 in the baker. Biggest cinnamon rolls ever.
£4 Superdrug
£8.75 Costa
£6.08 boots
£21.10 Wetherspoons
£20.64 Sainsbury's

Petrol is up to £1.80 here now. I'm not going to go anywhere until Monday.

BigSkies2022 · 01/06/2022 15:33

If someone wanted to pay for pictures of my feet, I'd be tempted.

Frugal lunch win: found some rice and curry sauce while rummaging through the freezer. Ate them with some fried mushrooms. Have lined up the ingredients for the flapjacks and scones (have just eaten the last piece of chocolate in the house, so if we want something sweet this week, I will need to bake) and will cook them at the same time as the aubergine thingy this evening.

Also, started flicking through The Financial Diet by Chelsea Fagan. She has a podcast (free on Spotify) and a website/blog/newsletter you can sign up to. There's a lot in there about frugal habits, budgeting, how to get going in investing, but also lots about career-management (a lot of her core audience are portfolio-careers, creatives with side-jobs) - it's a really good read, especially for those of who may have young adult children trying to make their way. I will be recommending it to DS (am always recommending him stuff, suspect he ignores it all, but maybe one day....).

It also makes me think I need to do more to earn more, apart from the forays into online surveys and the like.

WreckTangled · 01/06/2022 16:08

£30 skincare for dd. She has awful skin poor thing.

I'm signed up to some online surveys but mainly they only pay 5p a go and the ones that might pay 30p tend to kick you off halfway through saying you're not eligible.

BigSkies2022 · 01/06/2022 16:18

Have you tried Prolific Wreck? You provide a bunch of demographic info at the outset, and if you are notified about a survey, you are eligible to participate. I don't do it as consistently as I might, but today I've gone from zero to about £8 in the account. I transfer it to my PayPal account.

I spent £££s on OTC stuff for DS' acne, and in the end it was Differin and Tretclin on prescription that sorted it. He still gets the odd breakout but the persistent big spots are under control. Is this something your DD might benefit from?

AdoraBell · 01/06/2022 16:26

BigSkies well done on the freezer foraging 👍 I like Chelsea Fagan, usually watch her on YouTube.

Wreck hope the skincare works for your DD.

£115 on groceries 😱 that includes stuff for the weekend street party.

AdoraBell · 01/06/2022 16:29

Petrol is £177.9 here 🤦‍♀️ We’re semi rural now, it’s a bit cheaper in town.

WreckTangled · 01/06/2022 16:37

I am signed up but stopped doing it. Should get back to it, it was a bit better than the AttaPoll app I'm currently using.

I've got the la Roche posay for dd, she's had it before but ran out ages ago. She doesn't care enough to see the GP about it. I bought the cream that is first line prescription in the NICE guidelines so we could skip that one if need be but she doesn't use it. She just shrugs and says 'everyone has acne, I don't care' Grin it's more to control the oil at the moment, if she wants me to do more then I will. She's only 11 so still time to change her mind!

Decafflatteplease · 01/06/2022 19:26

@AdoraBell we are semi rural too, diesel car and it's 179.9 . Goes down so fast it feels like as obviously we get less for our money!

Very productive garden day here. Got all the things planted that I wanted too and had a good check on the things already growing, strawberries nearly ready and first mange tout and broad beans are growing well.

Also had a freezer sort so know what we have in there now.

Teen had a good day out and brought us change from the £20, bless!

Quiet day tomorrow, Lidl as have promised children icecreams for in the garden aa they were asking today and we didn't have any in. There space in the freezer now 🤣. Also want to get a swingball set they've got coming in tomorrow I believe. And some bedding plants. Will do big shop over the weekend hopefully. Am being brave and trying a full shop at Lidl this week I haven't booked an ocado 😱

WreckTangled · 01/06/2022 19:30

That is brave Grin, I've purposefully avoided this week at Aldi or lidl because a) it's half term and the dc won't want to go and b) it's bank holiday which means the roads will be a nightmare (it's 20 miles to the nearest supermarket). Our diesel is about £1.86 now I think it's just such a nightmare, especially when you live rurally. Literally can't walk to anywhere.

lifelongfrugaleer · 02/06/2022 03:29

Urgh early morning start. 0245
£50 to top the car up £172 here town centre pumps
£££ this weekend but all budgeted for

Gensola · 02/06/2022 07:08

wreck I had terrible skin when I was younger and the only thing that worked for me was Paula’s Choice liquid BHA which I used every night before bed. It’s pricey but maybe worth a look, depending on how she gets on with what you’ve got already. I still think of myself as someone with acne even though my skin is fine now, I’ve made new friends since and sometimes I make a comment about my skin and they have no idea what I’m on about!

Busy work day so probably won’t spend much, £18 in Boots yesterday on Cerave wash, tooth floss and ibuprofen #glamour

WreckTangled · 02/06/2022 08:09

Thanks gen I'll bear it in mind. I have bought her anecide (benzoyl peroxide) but this is the one she doesn't use. Not sure why, maybe because I told her it might bleach her pillow case Grin she's really good at washing her face etc. She does sweat a lot over night which really doesn't help matters...

Should be a nsd today. Dh is at work and my sister is coming over with her brood.

Wolfcub · 02/06/2022 08:19

£95 in ocado yesterday (includes party food and drink) and £85 in lidl on shelf stable things for the month but that did include £20 of storage boxes. £40 wgac but that'll last about 20 weeks or so.
Out for dinner tonight. Spendy month already and it's only the 2nd!

Hairband100 · 02/06/2022 11:43

Ended up getting an Ocado shop for today £74 as had a £10 voucher that expires today and used it for Dcat wetfood.

Does anyone get the MSE emails?
Some good bank transfer deals and if anyone is in overdraft he recommends an account with 0% interest for year with the plan of paying OD off of course.
DF works in finance and says banks are going to be clamping down hard on overdrafts.
I have one with Barclays on my second account, never used it, they have just written to say its being withdrawn.

WreckTangled · 02/06/2022 11:48

I think dh might have a £50 overdraft which he never uses. I don't have one on my account and there isn't one on the joint account either. I remember when I first joined this thread I think I had almost £1000... so easy to borrow money these days. (And necessary!)

BigSkies2022 · 02/06/2022 12:14

We dip into the arranged, interest free OD on the joint account. And will almost certainly do so this month, unless I can pull off a feat where we eat for under £30 a week. I haven't been overdrawn on my own account in a long time, and I'm not sure I even have one arranged.

Hairband100 · 02/06/2022 12:35

Mine was only for £150, I dont think I asked for it, it was just added when I opened the account.
Thats good going @WreckTangled , its so demoralising when you get paid and its eaten up in OD.

Do you have any loyalty card points to use up @BigSkies2022 ?
£30 seems to get virtually nothing these days, as my DM would say "a few bits"

ememem84 · 03/06/2022 08:07

wreck poor dd. Although if it’s not bothering her good for her. I had awful skin when I was younger. Probably exacerbated by the fact I used “st Ives apricot scrub” literally all the time. Found it in the shop a while ago and bought some for nostalgias sake. Wrecked my skin again.

I don’t use la Roche posey myself - just never tried it but I have heard great things.

ememem84 · 03/06/2022 08:08

Jubilee party here today. Have some cupcakes to finish and then bbq food to prep. House to decorate.
