Follow on from the old thread

This is a space / long running thread for people wanting tips on making life cheaper for what ever reason and support who have to make living less expensive. If you are new here just post away everyone is welcome.

Frugal tips from the hive mind so far....

Check your outgoing-are they essential, are you on the best deal
Loyalty cards for stores you regularly shop at
Meal plan
Annual budget rather than monthly for those, well annual, expenses
Second hand is fine for 90% of stuff
Sign up to money saving expert emails
Insulation at home.
Close curtains at dark and tuck behind rads
Foil behind external wall rad
Turn the heating down . Tropical houses are not necessary
Use the washing line when you can
Look out for food recycling scheme- bread and butter thing, company shop, too good to go type things
Do you have to buy that Christmas/ birthday present. Can you give time instead
Eat less meat (tho I’m rubbish at this)
Have a on toast day. Or baked potato weekly
Double up while the oven is on for a reheat meal or a bake. Save electric running the oven less.
Branded goods are not always the best
-Walk those short trips if possible, instead of using the car (I am the worst for doing this). Saves petrol, good exercise too.
-Combine car trips better too eg dropped DD off at an activity tonight, which is next to the supermarket.
Cancel sky, if you still want the programmes switch to Now Tv for a fraction of the price
Cancel any subscriptions you don't need. Check direct debits to make sure you're not paying for anything you no longer need by accident
Check all your bills, insurances etc are the cheapest you can get for the cover you need (the last bit is important)
If you can get a voucher, use a cash back site or have some sort of work discount (nhs, bluelight, Tesco, student etc) check before paying
Meal plan before you shop. Make extra to freeze for another day as it's often cheaper per kg to buy bigger packs of meat
Go veggie a couple of times a week
Aldi and Lidl are great but not if you're going to get sidetracked by the aisle of doom
An annual budget is essential but pay yourself first each month so money into the annual pot, into savings, off debt before anything else happens. Make sure there's a line in your budget for fun money even if it's a tiny amount, budgeting can be a grind otherwise
You will have patches of spendiness and demotivation, don't give up just start again from wherever you end up
Take your own drinks, snacks, food, picnic - Invariably cheaper and nicer
Make your own if you have a stocked baking cupboard and spice cupboard. Cheaper and nicer, tho building said cupboard can be ££ (costs can be reduced by a visit to your local international supermarket)
Aldi for baking stuff it’s fine.
Work out of season for clothes as it’s usually cheaper
i switched to a coffee subscription (coffee is my weakness) - so our local shop delivers me a 250g bag of ground coffee every 2 weeks (i have 4 in the cupboard currently) and i make my own morning coffee. the subscription is for 6 months and costs me £58 i think. a takeaway from the same shop is £2.80 a pop. so it is a money saver. I bought a Contigo cup (spendy but worth every penny). so take my coffee hot to work with me.

I'm also a fan of using it up. so tings like toiletries, stationary (i am also a notebook hoarder) food etc. not replacing until it's all gone (or all of one thing gone).

my Lloyds account does "save the change" so it rounds up a purchase and then moves the pence to my savings account.

I also pay myself first on payday and am trying to use the things we have- zoo membership - use it loads so worth the £160 a year cost. same with my gym membership i use it so get my moneys worth.

Also what you can save/be frugal on can be inversely related to your means. If you have more "spare" money per month it's easier to buy in bulk and choose things that are cheapest per kg. If you have less or no spare money this isn't possible to do and then you're looking at cheapest price per item rather than per kg.

Agree re taking own stuff although I do often forget but a good coffee cup and water bottle is a good investment if you can afford it

If you have a dog use something like all about dog food to work out what the best food is you can buy based on what you can afford to spend per day
I also give the clothes an extra spin in the washing machine before they go in the dryer, and dry outside whenever i can - currently not living at home, so limited to a washer dryer (which is crap) and an airer next to a rad which i hate.

im a big fan of using the freezer and freeze anything i can. we buy reduced items (like bread and keep it in the freezer as it saves it going off - we maybe get through a loaf every couple of weeks).
I know that credit cards are sometimes seen here as the work of the devil (on MN specifically not this thread) but if you have one use to to your advantage. Mine gives me money back in the form of M&S or amazon vouchers every quarter depending on how much I've spent. and as long as you pay it off every month it works.
Top Cashback for all internet purchases.
Join the library - many have free access to Audible, Libby (for magazines and newspapers) as well as having an amazing selection of books.
Consider how you cook things - residual heat cooking works really well for rice and any slow cooker recipe.
Grow herbs and salad leaves on a window sill
Grow soft fruit - your local allotment / neighbours with a raspberry cane/ strawberry / current / gooseberry will be more than happy to give you a cutting.
Look for local food pantries
If you need credit use a Credit Union. If you are saving support your local credit union by becoming one of their savers.

Agree. Get the membership @Decafflatteplease For want of a better phrase “health before wealth” if you use the membership it’s beneficial. Even if it’s just for a cry under a naice shower (and who doesn’t enjoy that….! I love the showers at my gym for this reason. Hot. Powerful. And if I need a cry I can take my anger out at the gym and release the tears In the shower. It’s a thing.

@CheeseMaiden another chickpea one for you. Sesame sticky chickpea. pin.it/26Qs4e7
its easy quick and relatively cheap. And healthy. And so yum. Also works with chicken or pork.

I’ve just got home from lunch. Met client at 1230. I am a bit tipsy pished. Champagne. Wine. Espresso martinis. Prawn and crab cocktail. Lamb and “dolphin” potatoes (dauphinois) and pistachio white chocolate cheesecake. At a restaurant which I’d never been to before. Despite it being open for around 10 years. I will be going back at some point though. Yum. I picked up the bill because work. But first thing tomorrow I’m submitting an expenses claim.

got home and catface was waiting for me all puffy tailed. She was being weird then I looked outside. She’s caught and mauled and deaded a wood pigeon. So I’ve had to dispose of it and hose down the decking. Fucksake

Decafflatteplease · 04/05/2022 17:22

@ememem84 glad it's not just me using the gym for therapy ☺️

Sounds like a day of two halves! Your lunch sounds fabulous though. You are on Jersey is that right? We love jersey, corbiere stunning, haven't been in years though!

@CheeseMaiden if you are looking for chickpea recipes I do a lovely slow cooker lamb curry with chickpeas in. Got it from YouTube can post link if you like.

ememem84 · 04/05/2022 18:58

@Decafflatteplease i do indeed. I feel very lucky to live here. Corbierre is one of my fave places too. Such a beautiful setting. But equally the whole island is wonderful. we pay through the nose to be here. But it’s home.

Unescorted · 04/05/2022 19:00

decaff it sounds as if the gym keeps you in one piece. Hope your grant application is successful. If it isn't some GPs can prescribe gym sessions.

Notes chickpea recipes.

I am so tired for no reason. Tonight will be dinner and then sewing bee followed by falling asleep on the sofa.

In that case you have a medical reason for you and your dc, not to mention the MH benefits

and it will Be warm, save on heating anyway. Joke

CheeseMaiden · 04/05/2022 19:55

@ememem84 that looks lovely, I will add it to our list!
@Decafflatteplease yes please! I have some mutton in the freezer, do you think that would work?
Also, a good pool and a tranquil swim are worth the spend especially if all the family will benefit.

quiet evening planned here, DH has flu and is in bed already with a dose of nigh nurse. I’m going to catch up on sewing bee and possibly do some baking (if DD goes to sleep in good time…)

northender · 04/05/2022 20:04

Decaff another one here saying absolutely you should apply for a grant for the gym/swim membership.
Half please don't feel you have to be defensive about your spending. As others have said, we all have different circumstances on here. For me frugality is getting the most out of what you have, however much or little that is, buying well, reducing waste.
Got my latest assignment submitted, next module starts tomorrow.
Have been treating the family to some new recipes this week rather than resorting to a hello fresh discounted box for inspiration. I've got some really good recipe books, so time to use them.
Monday: Hairy Bikers slow cooked lamb shoulder for my dad's birthday tea. Was nice but didn't have quite long enough of the slow cooking
Tuesday: Hugh F-W from his Leftovers book Lamb hot pot. Whole family loved it, dh declared it the best leftovers meal yet. Lamb shoulder used up. Result.
Wednesday: Fished a bag of lamb mince from the freezer & made Spicy lamb flatbread from the Jamie Oliver 7 ways book. That too was delish. We may now have a break from lamb!
Thinking of a butternut squash, cauli and chick pea curry tomorrow as the squash & cauli need using.

Big spend coming up. We have a 12 year old tank Skoda Octavia which is looking jaded but still going well & still costing little in maintenance. We also pay ds a bit of money to be able to use his Corsa when we need to. He goes away for a year in September with his car, so we will need a second car. Dd is learning to drive & needs to practice more so getting the car now seems a good idea. Can't afford anything like new & don't want to lease, so trying to decide between less money on a small car, would still use the tank for Devon trips & other long distances. Or a medium sized car that would be cheaper to run than the tank but big enough for dh & I to do Devon trips. Mulling over the options....

Decafflatteplease · 04/05/2022 20:11

I can't seem to do a link @CheeseMaiden but I'm YouTube if you search for "Witt family slow cooker curry" there is a chicken one and a lamb one both years old but both very easy. I also add in a few handfuls of frozen veg )I think she says this on the chicken recipe). The woman is the video is.not me lol just a mum vlogger I watch.

Quiet evening here too hopefully, everyone very tired. Think I'll get settled in bed with the iPad and watch something..Sen DC will wake regularly but we cosleep so it's not too bad.

northender · 04/05/2022 20:26

Another priority is to clear my sewing space as I've got 3 projects to start or continue with. An ongoing quilt for us, one for sil for her birthday (a week ago), we are seeing her at the end of the month so have a 3 week window. and one for ds for when he goes in September. I have kept his duvet covers from his 2 football teams & am going to incorporate the fabrics into a man quilt. I already have all the fabrics I need so no real expense, just time (then expense at the end for wadding & backing, but will deal with that then!)

ememem84 · 04/05/2022 20:35

cheese it’s so good. I serve with fluffy rice broccoli and spring onions. The kids love it. It’s sweet and yum. For DH and I, we throw chillis into it too yummmm.

a coffee/sandwich shop near the office does the most amazing curried chickpeas. They are so good. I used to order a cup of them when I was pregnant. So so yum. Just them. For lunch. Mmmmm. #wierdpreggocravings

might go there tomorrow for lunch. Get one of the salad boxes which seem to have no end. Bit of a contrast to today.

the booze is wearing off.

CheeseMaiden · 04/05/2022 20:55

@northender, I love a good sewing project! I have a few I need to get cracking with too, mainly presents and some bits for DD. I sew all our soft furnishings and am starting to make clothes for DD.
please keep us posted with how you get on 🪡

marthasmum · 04/05/2022 21:03

Aw that’s lovely mrs that you’ve encouraged decaff to do that, I too think you should go for it! Hydrotherapy pool sounds great. And we all prioritise different spends don’t we. I find running so good for my mental health - honestly as good as low dose anti depressants. Just been and saw some ducklings.
My health priority is to give myself a kick up the bum to get properly back on my low carb diet. I’ve recently reached the threshold for diagnosis of type 2 diabetes and I’m really cross about it cos I love cake. And toast. And don’t drink or smoke.
also cross with myself as I’d set a budget for
discretionary day to day spends and thought I was doing well keeping to it, but just realised I’ve overspent so have had to plug the gap with money I’d put aside for kids clothes. DC are revising and I’ve spent about £50 on revision textbooks, equipment for DDs photography etc. but at least they are revising!! DD and DS1 get on very well and are encouraging each other. A levels and GCSES start 16 May.

CheeseMaiden · 04/05/2022 21:04

@Decafflatteplease,she sounds familiar, I’ll have a search!
I have a batch of flapjacks in the oven and enjoying the peace and quiet 😁

CheeseMaiden · 04/05/2022 21:10

@marthasmum didn't see your post when I posted! I hope it didn’t come across as insensitive.
sounds like a busy time in your household, I hope the DC’s exams go ok and it’s great that they are supporting each other.

marthasmum · 04/05/2022 21:25

😂 no worries at all cheese
the DC are regularly scoffing sugary treats, I just need to keep my mitts off!

WreckTangled · 05/05/2022 06:54

martha I'm type one and have an hba1c of 5.3% managed with a low carb diet (and insulin obviously Grin). I also won a competition for a years supply of low carb brownies which I'm overflowing with, if you would like my next delivery (beginning of June) I am happy to post them on to you

CurlsandCurves · 05/05/2022 07:47

Gorgeous day here, just about to get a couple of loads of washing out on the line, it’s just not been drying indoors these last few days.

Dance fit class then work for me. DHs birthday today and he’s off work too which never happens. Have told him to make the most of the weather and get out on his motorbike while he’s got the chance. Then it’s takeaway tonight.

Hope everyone has a great day

Decafflatteplease · 05/05/2022 14:03

Gorgeous day here too so nice to go out without a coat!

Have had a fab day, low spend too..

£30 on diesel but it has gone up 3p overnight!
£1 toddler group
£5 in m and s on bread, fish fingers, yogurt. Got a great deal on the sparks app though....free 5 pack of cookies from the bakery so the children will have those after dinner and a free bread from the bakery so treated DH and I to the cranberry and walnut loaf yum yum. Those 2 things would have been £5 so a fab find on the app I always try to check it before I go in-store

lifelongfrugaleer · 05/05/2022 15:42

Christ today has been spendy. Will get some back as buying for an event on Sunday too

lifelongfrugaleer · 05/05/2022 18:03

However I did get my bathroom quote down by about £800 so that’s good
just need to pay the deposit now, bye bye savings

Unescorted · 05/05/2022 18:12

I need to finish off my sewing projects too. A dress for summer, a quilt and cushions for the garden.

Our fixed term energy comes to an end at the end of the month.... Renewal £500pm up from £150. No offers on the comparison sites which is a worry. I am hoping it is to do with the expected ruling on DD building up huge credits.

NSD here - well, unless you count the deposit on the holiday cottage in July (but that came from the joint account). We now have 3 breaks booked/paid for over the next 3 months. We've been stuck at home waiting for the new car to be delivered, and once it was, we cracked on with booking time away.

The car is a hybrid, so hoping that running costs will be lower.

Set up a payment plan for tax bill - after talking to the tax office, it actually turns out my liability by Jan 31 2023 is about £1000 less than my online statement claims. So my monthly payments are much more affordable. Something I would not have known had I not sat in the queue to talk to a real person and then sat in another queue to manually set up a budget payment plan. Don't take your online statement at face value, people! they do weird accounting things that inflate it, and then you can't set your monthly repayments at a rate that works for you.

So now I am just waiting for the paper work for the new credit card and when that comes through, I should be able to have a bit more give in the budget.

WreckTangled · 05/05/2022 18:42

LSD here. Bought some lunch at M&S.

Apparently dh moaned to dd about having pasta for dinner 'again' (first time this week). Maybe he should do the shopping and cooking if it bothers him that much...

Unescorted · 05/05/2022 19:02

wreck it makes me so angry when they moan but have no suggestions. Do I look as if I have a direct line to their stomach that bypasses their brain.

OP posts:
BigSkies22 · 05/05/2022 21:03

Ha! I had this conversation with DH and DS when the latter was down for Easter break. "I don't mind shopping and cooking for the majority of meals, but I cannot do all the thinking on your behalf as well. While we're all sitting at this meal together, please each of you come up with 5 meals each, and I will write them down." Plus my 5, that's dinners for a fortnight,

DH proposed omelette and chips as one of his.
