Follow on from the old thread

This is a space / long running thread for people wanting tips on making life cheaper for what ever reason and support who have to make living less expensive. If you are new here just post away everyone is welcome.

Frugal tips from the hive mind so far....

Check your outgoing-are they essential, are you on the best deal
Loyalty cards for stores you regularly shop at
Meal plan
Annual budget rather than monthly for those, well annual, expenses
Second hand is fine for 90% of stuff
Sign up to money saving expert emails
Insulation at home.
Close curtains at dark and tuck behind rads
Foil behind external wall rad
Turn the heating down . Tropical houses are not necessary
Use the washing line when you can
Look out for food recycling scheme- bread and butter thing, company shop, too good to go type things
Do you have to buy that Christmas/ birthday present. Can you give time instead
Eat less meat (tho I’m rubbish at this)
Have a on toast day. Or baked potato weekly
Double up while the oven is on for a reheat meal or a bake. Save electric running the oven less.
Branded goods are not always the best
-Walk those short trips if possible, instead of using the car (I am the worst for doing this). Saves petrol, good exercise too.
-Combine car trips better too eg dropped DD off at an activity tonight, which is next to the supermarket.
Cancel sky, if you still want the programmes switch to Now Tv for a fraction of the price
Cancel any subscriptions you don't need. Check direct debits to make sure you're not paying for anything you no longer need by accident
Check all your bills, insurances etc are the cheapest you can get for the cover you need (the last bit is important)
If you can get a voucher, use a cash back site or have some sort of work discount (nhs, bluelight, Tesco, student etc) check before paying
Meal plan before you shop. Make extra to freeze for another day as it's often cheaper per kg to buy bigger packs of meat
Go veggie a couple of times a week
Aldi and Lidl are great but not if you're going to get sidetracked by the aisle of doom
An annual budget is essential but pay yourself first each month so money into the annual pot, into savings, off debt before anything else happens. Make sure there's a line in your budget for fun money even if it's a tiny amount, budgeting can be a grind otherwise
You will have patches of spendiness and demotivation, don't give up just start again from wherever you end up
Take your own drinks, snacks, food, picnic - Invariably cheaper and nicer
Make your own if you have a stocked baking cupboard and spice cupboard. Cheaper and nicer, tho building said cupboard can be ££ (costs can be reduced by a visit to your local international supermarket)
Aldi for baking stuff it’s fine.
Work out of season for clothes as it’s usually cheaper
i switched to a coffee subscription (coffee is my weakness) - so our local shop delivers me a 250g bag of ground coffee every 2 weeks (i have 4 in the cupboard currently) and i make my own morning coffee. the subscription is for 6 months and costs me £58 i think. a takeaway from the same shop is £2.80 a pop. so it is a money saver. I bought a Contigo cup (spendy but worth every penny). so take my coffee hot to work with me.

I'm also a fan of using it up. so tings like toiletries, stationary (i am also a notebook hoarder) food etc. not replacing until it's all gone (or all of one thing gone).

my Lloyds account does "save the change" so it rounds up a purchase and then moves the pence to my savings account.

I also pay myself first on payday and am trying to use the things we have- zoo membership - use it loads so worth the £160 a year cost. same with my gym membership i use it so get my moneys worth.

Also what you can save/be frugal on can be inversely related to your means. If you have more "spare" money per month it's easier to buy in bulk and choose things that are cheapest per kg. If you have less or no spare money this isn't possible to do and then you're looking at cheapest price per item rather than per kg.

Agree re taking own stuff although I do often forget but a good coffee cup and water bottle is a good investment if you can afford it

If you have a dog use something like all about dog food to work out what the best food is you can buy based on what you can afford to spend per day
I also give the clothes an extra spin in the washing machine before they go in the dryer, and dry outside whenever i can - currently not living at home, so limited to a washer dryer (which is crap) and an airer next to a rad which i hate.

im a big fan of using the freezer and freeze anything i can. we buy reduced items (like bread and keep it in the freezer as it saves it going off - we maybe get through a loaf every couple of weeks).
I know that credit cards are sometimes seen here as the work of the devil (on MN specifically not this thread) but if you have one use to to your advantage. Mine gives me money back in the form of M&S or amazon vouchers every quarter depending on how much I've spent. and as long as you pay it off every month it works.
Top Cashback for all internet purchases.
Join the library - many have free access to Audible, Libby (for magazines and newspapers) as well as having an amazing selection of books.
Consider how you cook things - residual heat cooking works really well for rice and any slow cooker recipe.
Grow herbs and salad leaves on a window sill
Grow soft fruit - your local allotment / neighbours with a raspberry cane/ strawberry / current / gooseberry will be more than happy to give you a cutting.
Look for local food pantries
If you need credit use a Credit Union. If you are saving support your local credit union by becoming one of their savers.

We’ve had a couple of days at home so not spent much - just the bits I forgot to add to Ocado before the cutoff (not sure how much, DH went to Sainies). Yesterday we had roast chicken thighs with lemon and rosemary and parmentier potatoes and veg (DC’s favourite - they fight over the crispy skin and I like just having lemony juices and not having to make gravy ) and today we’re having Mary Berry sausage lasagne (DS’s favourite). Leftovers for lunch next days.

I had hoped to make a dent in decorating the sitting room today but it took hours yesterday to pack to the room (lots of shelves, and emptying cupboards that need painting inside and out). I have two ikea bags of DVDs and books to donate, just can’t do with the clutter. today I’ve been filling holes, sanding down, sugar soaping etc. Can’t believe it’s taking so long. Two days of disruption and hard work and I’ve not picked a brush up yet! No idea when I’ll finish it, I’m working in the week and half of Saturdays are taken up with DC activities. We’ll be living in chaos for a while 😁

i rather wish I’d paid someone to do it but given our build work will go over budget due to inflation, and at london prices this paint job is probably £1500+, I’ll have saved a lot. But sigh.

Any decorating gurus - how would you treat this door before painting? I’ll sand it down but think I’ll need to fill the gaps - wood filler?

lifelongfrugaleer · 02/05/2022 17:12

@lightand we talk about anything and everything as frugality encompasses the whole person and their life. Spending money, or not, Is one part of the whole. Especially for us emotional spenders , hence the seeming randomness

This thread is making me feel a bit inadequate, sorry, maybe it's just not for me.
I'm on quite a low income I think compared to some on here.

Just spent £1.20 on the evening meal for the DC, a pizza mix...with toppings maybe £2?...

Most of have been or are where you are. It was okay day on Thursday for a few so they are buying things they have saved all month for. It is not our intention to make you feel inadequate.

@TheNewlmprovedMrsMadEvans that sounds a lovely afternoon and the flower displays look stunning. We used to be heavily involved in our church I ran they Sunday school and everything but since covid and everything the past few years we sort of stopped going and now I don't know if it's a good fit anymore tbh. Debating trying a different church.

It was a nsd today yay we went to a nature reserve we are members so get good value from our annual pass. Took a picnic and Inlaws paid for coffee and cake for us which was lovely.

WreckTangled · 02/05/2022 18:30

Oranges I have £60 to last me all of may until pay day (food and bills have been budgeted for) so there won't be much spending from me. I think food shopping is the one I find hardest to stick to. Oh and keeping within our £90 a week fuel budget feels impossible right now too Hmm it's depressing really.

My dc love to make their own pizza.

lifelongfrugaleer · 02/05/2022 18:38

@Orangesandlemons77 please stay. I had a payday splurge and absolutely have been where you are.
you are not inadequate. Tell us what your money plans are and we can see if we can help

lifelongfrugaleer · 02/05/2022 18:40

Dom you have any baking stuff in and pizza is dead easy to make if you have baking stuff to hand. Appreciate not everyone has

TheNewlmprovedMrsMadEvans · 02/05/2022 18:48

@Orangesandlemons77 we have all got different incomes but no one here will ever look down on anyone for what they have or haven't got . It is simply everyone helping each other out honestly . Give it a go lovely and you can probably give us all a lot of great tips Flowers

AdoraBell · 02/05/2022 18:50

Oranges you don’t need to feel bad in any way, everyone on this thread is helpful and non judgmental. You are just doing the best you can. Please stay and get to know the supportive frugal club.

NSD here, groceries arriving tomorrow.

ememem84 · 02/05/2022 18:54

we have lost our hoover. It’s not in the loft. It’s not in the garage. We either dumped it when we moved out or packed it away. The only other place it could be is fils. Trying to get DH to call him to find out if it’s there is a mission.

just. Fucking. Call. Him. I’m not asking him to go get it today. I just need to know where it is.

HumbugWhale · 02/05/2022 20:12

Those flights are so expensive Em, but will be worth it to see family and as you say, no accommodation costs. I was saying to dh the other day it is so long since we have been on a plane and so much has moved on in terms of internet booking, check-in etc that I actually wouldn't know how to book a flight now! Plus my passport has expired.

Nsd. Been mostly gardening and played some games, read some books with the dcs. Had a freezer dinner as we have eaten all the fresh stuff except carrots and I did so much cooking yesterday I couldn't really be bothered today. Big Tesco shop coming tomorrow. Stocked up on versatile stuff that will hopefully last a few weeks and will get top ups of fresh stuff from Lidl in between.

ememem84 · 02/05/2022 20:45

dh has retrieved the hoover. It was at fils.

ds’ passport has expired too humbug so I’ve got to renew that. Sigh. He only used it once. Dd hasn’t even used hers.

So tired now. We’ve had the cold this weekend. DH has it from last week. I was taken down on Friday. But have ploughed on as much as I could.

WreckTangled · 02/05/2022 20:49

Dds passport only took a week to come back when I renewed it two weeks ago, it was her third one. She looked so cute in her first one compared to now Grin not that we're going anywhere but I like to know that we could if we win the lottery

marthasmum · 02/05/2022 22:27

oranges yes please do give it a go. I know when money is tight you can feel very self conscious. But hopefully you can share and pick up some tips and it is very friendly.

WreckTangled · 03/05/2022 06:24

Morning. Ds has a random inset day today. I might take him to the nearby posh town to peruse the charity shops.

ememem84 · 03/05/2022 06:26

Morning!

happy Tuesday! Have started my day by doing a calm meditation. Nice.

work today then gym after I think.

lifelongfrugaleer · 03/05/2022 06:38

Morning

I’ve started the day by sorting out more bills that failed due to blooming new card after cloning

WreckTangled · 03/05/2022 06:41

I'm in the gym now. Been here since 6, it's getting much easier to get up with the lighter mornings.

Unescorted · 03/05/2022 07:03

Morning all,

wreck that is early! I was still considering how perfect the temperature was in bed.
Em hope you are feeling a bit better.

I am aiming for a low no spend day today.

I need to go to the foodbank later - we put an ask out for the first time in ages because usage is up and donations down. I really worry that it is going to be really difficult for a lot of people. Unexpected bills are outweighing weighing UC delays.

Today is halfway point for the couch potato to runner bean - I am really pleased with it. I am running again & not yet inflamed all my old aches and pains.

Lunch packed. Kids ready to go. DH has decided that now is the best time to water the lawn. 🙄

BigSkies22 · 03/05/2022 08:07

Half I do a lot of my own painting, in a house with lots of 'lovely' fiddly bits, and yes, the prep can feel endless. Decorator's caulk is your friend. That door needs a very light sand, and then use caulk (I like Soudal, but there are loads) to run a line around the joins of the details. Cut the nozzle smaller than you think you'll need.

I use caulk everywhere - all joins between skirting boards and walls, picture rail, around door frames and architraves, details on doors and windows..it adds time to the prep but the result is so much better.

Zinnsser Bin primer is also a good thing to have, especially if you have old sash windows and the like. It's oil-based but dries very quickly. It's runny, so I hold a cloth under the brush to prevent spills. A litre tin will last you for life. Don't bother using your best brushes - an old one and discard.

CurlsandCurves · 03/05/2022 08:37

Morning,

Crazy busy couple of days at work, but I love it when it’s like that and the arts festival brought in loads of interesting people and a brilliant atmosphere. Very grateful I’m not back in till Thursday now tho, lots of stuff to catch up on at home.

@Orangesandlemons77 i hope you decide to stay, we’re all from different backgrounds and circumstances, and all in here for different reasons as I’m sure you’ll see as you read.

@lifelongfrugaleer sounds like a bit of a nightmare!

@WreckTangled Blimey that’s an early start not to mention some serious commitment.

Right, laundry to sort, food shop to do. Need to go through the list and stick to the budget. I’m shopping a day later than normal so that should help.

WreckTangled · 03/05/2022 09:09

Yeah if I don't go early then I wouldn't bother going at all. I only go three days a week.
