Follow on from the old thread

This is a space / long running thread for people wanting tips on making life cheaper for what ever reason and support who have to make living less expensive. If you are new here just post away everyone is welcome.

Frugal tips from the hive mind so far....

Check your outgoing-are they essential, are you on the best deal
Loyalty cards for stores you regularly shop at
Meal plan
Annual budget rather than monthly for those, well annual, expenses
Second hand is fine for 90% of stuff
Sign up to money saving expert emails
Insulation at home.
Close curtains at dark and tuck behind rads
Foil behind external wall rad
Turn the heating down . Tropical houses are not necessary
Use the washing line when you can
Look out for food recycling scheme- bread and butter thing, company shop, too good to go type things
Do you have to buy that Christmas/ birthday present. Can you give time instead
Eat less meat (tho I’m rubbish at this)
Have a on toast day. Or baked potato weekly
Double up while the oven is on for a reheat meal or a bake. Save electric running the oven less.
Branded goods are not always the best
-Walk those short trips if possible, instead of using the car (I am the worst for doing this). Saves petrol, good exercise too.
-Combine car trips better too eg dropped DD off at an activity tonight, which is next to the supermarket.
Cancel sky, if you still want the programmes switch to Now Tv for a fraction of the price
Cancel any subscriptions you don't need. Check direct debits to make sure you're not paying for anything you no longer need by accident
Check all your bills, insurances etc are the cheapest you can get for the cover you need (the last bit is important)
If you can get a voucher, use a cash back site or have some sort of work discount (nhs, bluelight, Tesco, student etc) check before paying
Meal plan before you shop. Make extra to freeze for another day as it's often cheaper per kg to buy bigger packs of meat
Go veggie a couple of times a week
Aldi and Lidl are great but not if you're going to get sidetracked by the aisle of doom
An annual budget is essential but pay yourself first each month so money into the annual pot, into savings, off debt before anything else happens. Make sure there's a line in your budget for fun money even if it's a tiny amount, budgeting can be a grind otherwise
You will have patches of spendiness and demotivation, don't give up just start again from wherever you end up
Take your own drinks, snacks, food, picnic - Invariably cheaper and nicer
Make your own if you have a stocked baking cupboard and spice cupboard. Cheaper and nicer, tho building said cupboard can be ££ (costs can be reduced by a visit to your local international supermarket)
Aldi for baking stuff it’s fine.
Work out of season for clothes as it’s usually cheaper
i switched to a coffee subscription (coffee is my weakness) - so our local shop delivers me a 250g bag of ground coffee every 2 weeks (i have 4 in the cupboard currently) and i make my own morning coffee. the subscription is for 6 months and costs me £58 i think. a takeaway from the same shop is £2.80 a pop. so it is a money saver. I bought a Contigo cup (spendy but worth every penny). so take my coffee hot to work with me.

I'm also a fan of using it up. so tings like toiletries, stationary (i am also a notebook hoarder) food etc. not replacing until it's all gone (or all of one thing gone).

my Lloyds account does "save the change" so it rounds up a purchase and then moves the pence to my savings account.

I also pay myself first on payday and am trying to use the things we have- zoo membership - use it loads so worth the £160 a year cost. same with my gym membership i use it so get my moneys worth.

Also what you can save/be frugal on can be inversely related to your means. If you have more "spare" money per month it's easier to buy in bulk and choose things that are cheapest per kg. If you have less or no spare money this isn't possible to do and then you're looking at cheapest price per item rather than per kg.

Agree re taking own stuff although I do often forget but a good coffee cup and water bottle is a good investment if you can afford it

If you have a dog use something like all about dog food to work out what the best food is you can buy based on what you can afford to spend per day
I also give the clothes an extra spin in the washing machine before they go in the dryer, and dry outside whenever i can - currently not living at home, so limited to a washer dryer (which is crap) and an airer next to a rad which i hate.

im a big fan of using the freezer and freeze anything i can. we buy reduced items (like bread and keep it in the freezer as it saves it going off - we maybe get through a loaf every couple of weeks).
I know that credit cards are sometimes seen here as the work of the devil (on MN specifically not this thread) but if you have one use to to your advantage. Mine gives me money back in the form of M&S or amazon vouchers every quarter depending on how much I've spent. and as long as you pay it off every month it works.
Top Cashback for all internet purchases.
Join the library - many have free access to Audible, Libby (for magazines and newspapers) as well as having an amazing selection of books.
Consider how you cook things - residual heat cooking works really well for rice and any slow cooker recipe.
Grow herbs and salad leaves on a window sill
Grow soft fruit - your local allotment / neighbours with a raspberry cane/ strawberry / current / gooseberry will be more than happy to give you a cutting.
Look for local food pantries
If you need credit use a Credit Union. If you are saving support your local credit union by becoming one of their savers.

I guess ruling out an organic cause is the first port of call and if there's nothing there then it would be going back to basics on the toilet training which doesn't sounds fun....

ememem84 · 01/05/2022 19:46

Nope. Not fun. But that’s what we’re doing tomorrow. Maybe I’ve just got complacent with it.

so every hour or so toilet. Lots of water too (as apparently that can help flush things out). Not planning on doing much tomorrow so staying close to home is a good idea.

she’s been ok until Friday. No accidents at nursery for a long time. So I wonder if it is simply DH and I have taken our eyes off the ball?

Friday afternoon - we had lunch at the adventure park and she had a box drink and a water bottle. Then did wet herself in the car on the way back (she refused to go toilet and I didn’t force it as we’d had such a lovely time - and it is only usually a 20 min drive). Then we got to dparents and the bubble machine came out - excitement. Abs it was warm so more drinks.

yeaterday I went riding in the morning came back around 1 and they were still in jammies and she had her pull up on still. Then the accidents started in the afternoon. but only when we were home. Maybe she’s holding it in while out?

she’s just gone to bed and did tell me she needed toilet. And did a humongous wee. Didn’t seem in pain though. But I praised her for telling me. So so much.

she wears a pull up at nighttime though still as we’re not quite ready for that yet!

HumbugWhale · 02/05/2022 07:40

Morning and happy bank holiday Monday! Just had a quick read back as I'm a bit behind.

Em has dd had/could she have had covid recently? Our kids all had it a few weeks ago and 2 of them had accidents and wet the beds and dd said it hurt to wee. Gp did a test that came back clear. She drank loads of water and was better very quickly.

Having a very frugal weekend so far. Tidied up the front drive (weeds and pruning mad out of control plant) on Saturday then batch cooked at load of yellow sticker food yesterday. Made 2 types of soup and 3 types of curry. Also lots of bread and berries for the freezer. Should keep us going for a while.

More gardening planned for today and perhaps a big walk somewhere. Dcs seemed to have an excess of energy yesterday!

lifelongfrugaleer · 02/05/2022 07:56

I’m going to the food festival today and taking ds bowling. More pavement weeding to do as well this afternoon

WreckTangled · 02/05/2022 08:00

We're not doing anything today. Dh is working. I've got mountains of washing to fold.

I looked at bowling yesterday but it was over £50 for the four of us to have two games Confused

BigSkies22 · 02/05/2022 08:25

heading off to the Surrey Hills for a nice big walk with the dog today. Did chores and useful admin yesterday, a home ballet workout, and was about to make a veggie stir-fry for dinner when DH proposed crispy duck. So £18 on takeaway duck (dog was deliriously happy) and we watched most of It's a Sin.

Quiet week ahead, I reckon. DH working hard towards a deadline, I'm on a decluttering mission and have a new reading list to start on.

ememem84 · 02/05/2022 09:44

humbug it’s a possibility. I haven’t tested either of the kids - as it’s a bit of an ordeal. But there were cases at nursery. So it’s definetly possible.

we’re not doing much here today. I’m going to bake something. But need to go to the shop and buy some scales. As I ditched mine when we moved out. I think. I can’t find them anyway.

I want dd to stay home and be near toilet so we can hopefully get back on track re potty training.

ememem84 · 02/05/2022 09:46

Also have a mountain of laundry to do.

and have sucked it up and emailed a local travel agent to sort our flights from London to Auckland and Perth at Christmas. I just looked on air nz and it will set us back £9900 for the 4 of us. And that’s the cheapest flights. Economy. And one of them was 51h travel duration (Perth to Vancouver to London). Yuk.

WreckTangled · 02/05/2022 09:48

Em that's madness. Remember my flights for £1200 for all four of us?! Can't imagine ever finding anything like that again. PIL's are in the uk now but will likely go back at some point and we will want to go out there and visit again.

ememem84 · 02/05/2022 09:53

wreck I know. I almost cried. But DH has resigned himself that this is the price. So we’re going with it.

flights are expensive because of the covid factor, the time of year, and it’s a two step holiday (Perth because of nils wedding end of jan).

have told travel agent the cost I could get with air nz. And have asked them to find it cheaper but to keep in mind flight duration with two littlies. Will see.

you flew Thai airways I think?

ememem84 · 02/05/2022 09:54

Hit go too soon.

the issue I have is that apparently it’s only air nz who fly direct from Auckland to Perth. So we want that flight. If I book with other airlines it’ll be one way flights. Which are more spendy.

WreckTangled · 02/05/2022 10:12

Yes we flew with Thai airways. Have you looked on sky scanner? I don't know your dates but had a quick look... (I was already perusing prices as we hope to go at Christmas next time)

That looks gorgeous! I must remember to make sure I don't miss my church's flower festival this year

TheNewlmprovedMrsMadEvans · 02/05/2022 14:16

@belephant it was fantastic , we really enjoyed it 🤗
@lightand anything goes here really ☺️

Orangesandlemons77 · 02/05/2022 15:12

Hi hope it's Ok to join. I'm trying to cut down on food costs by cooking some cheap stuff- today is lentil dahl (a Jamie Oliver recipe which is mainly red lentils) also making a banana loaf and bread loaf at the same time in the oven...smells nice in the kitchen! We're veggie apart from fish, which helps (although fish can be expensive sometimes)

WreckTangled · 02/05/2022 15:29

I tried to save some money (and be healthy) by making cereal bars for the dc but it was way more expensive. So annoying. It is pretty shit for food shopping right now, ie I would have loved some olives and feta to go with dinner tonight but it would have put us over budget so have had to do without. (I know that sounds entitled and some people can't even afford corn flakes).

That tends to happen….topics beer off track but the support stays the same.

to give some explanation re the hugely spendy flights. DH gets a fully paid three month sabbatical from his work. I appreciate this is an absolute bonus. We are spending half the 3 months in New Zealand to see mil Bil and sil and dnephews and then heading to Aussie to see other Bil get married. Trip of an absolute lifetime.

we had planned on going in 2021. When we wouldn’t have had to pay for dd (as she wouldn’t have been 2…) we were also not going at Christmas. The most expensive time of year but because Bil is getting married end of jan it makes sense to go for Christmas too. Might be the only Christmas mil gets to spend with the kids (she won’t come here for Christmas as it’s summer there so why would she miss a summer?!)

I’ve spent the afternoon baking. Chocolate raisin flapjack and am currently waiting for some bagels to finish. Yum.

taking the kids off to run off energy in the village green in a bit.

Oh and homemade McDonald’s for lunch! Big McEms if you will.

em have you had a look at the cost of return Auckland to Perth booked in NZ when you get there and a return UK to Auckland? It sometimes works out cheaper than a hopper ticket especially to Perth because it is always difficult to get space on the Perth Singapore leg.
