Follow on from the old thread

This is a space / long running thread for people wanting tips on making life cheaper for what ever reason and support who have to make living less expensive. If you are new here just post away everyone is welcome.

Frugal tips from the hive mind so far....

Check your outgoing-are they essential, are you on the best deal
Loyalty cards for stores you regularly shop at
Meal plan
Annual budget rather than monthly for those, well annual, expenses
Second hand is fine for 90% of stuff
Sign up to money saving expert emails
Insulation at home.
Close curtains at dark and tuck behind rads
Foil behind external wall rad
Turn the heating down . Tropical houses are not necessary
Use the washing line when you can
Look out for food recycling scheme- bread and butter thing, company shop, too good to go type things
Do you have to buy that Christmas/ birthday present. Can you give time instead
Eat less meat (tho I’m rubbish at this)
Have a on toast day. Or baked potato weekly
Double up while the oven is on for a reheat meal or a bake. Save electric running the oven less.
Branded goods are not always the best
-Walk those short trips if possible, instead of using the car (I am the worst for doing this). Saves petrol, good exercise too.
-Combine car trips better too eg dropped DD off at an activity tonight, which is next to the supermarket.
Cancel sky, if you still want the programmes switch to Now Tv for a fraction of the price
Cancel any subscriptions you don't need. Check direct debits to make sure you're not paying for anything you no longer need by accident
Check all your bills, insurances etc are the cheapest you can get for the cover you need (the last bit is important)
If you can get a voucher, use a cash back site or have some sort of work discount (nhs, bluelight, Tesco, student etc) check before paying
Meal plan before you shop. Make extra to freeze for another day as it's often cheaper per kg to buy bigger packs of meat
Go veggie a couple of times a week
Aldi and Lidl are great but not if you're going to get sidetracked by the aisle of doom
An annual budget is essential but pay yourself first each month so money into the annual pot, into savings, off debt before anything else happens. Make sure there's a line in your budget for fun money even if it's a tiny amount, budgeting can be a grind otherwise
You will have patches of spendiness and demotivation, don't give up just start again from wherever you end up
Take your own drinks, snacks, food, picnic - Invariably cheaper and nicer
Make your own if you have a stocked baking cupboard and spice cupboard. Cheaper and nicer, tho building said cupboard can be ££ (costs can be reduced by a visit to your local international supermarket)
Aldi for baking stuff it’s fine.
Work out of season for clothes as it’s usually cheaper
i switched to a coffee subscription (coffee is my weakness) - so our local shop delivers me a 250g bag of ground coffee every 2 weeks (i have 4 in the cupboard currently) and i make my own morning coffee. the subscription is for 6 months and costs me £58 i think. a takeaway from the same shop is £2.80 a pop. so it is a money saver. I bought a Contigo cup (spendy but worth every penny). so take my coffee hot to work with me.

I'm also a fan of using it up. so tings like toiletries, stationary (i am also a notebook hoarder) food etc. not replacing until it's all gone (or all of one thing gone).

my Lloyds account does "save the change" so it rounds up a purchase and then moves the pence to my savings account.

I also pay myself first on payday and am trying to use the things we have- zoo membership - use it loads so worth the £160 a year cost. same with my gym membership i use it so get my moneys worth.

Also what you can save/be frugal on can be inversely related to your means. If you have more "spare" money per month it's easier to buy in bulk and choose things that are cheapest per kg. If you have less or no spare money this isn't possible to do and then you're looking at cheapest price per item rather than per kg.

Agree re taking own stuff although I do often forget but a good coffee cup and water bottle is a good investment if you can afford it

If you have a dog use something like all about dog food to work out what the best food is you can buy based on what you can afford to spend per day
I also give the clothes an extra spin in the washing machine before they go in the dryer, and dry outside whenever i can - currently not living at home, so limited to a washer dryer (which is crap) and an airer next to a rad which i hate.

im a big fan of using the freezer and freeze anything i can. we buy reduced items (like bread and keep it in the freezer as it saves it going off - we maybe get through a loaf every couple of weeks).
I know that credit cards are sometimes seen here as the work of the devil (on MN specifically not this thread) but if you have one use to to your advantage. Mine gives me money back in the form of M&S or amazon vouchers every quarter depending on how much I've spent. and as long as you pay it off every month it works.
Top Cashback for all internet purchases.
Join the library - many have free access to Audible, Libby (for magazines and newspapers) as well as having an amazing selection of books.
Consider how you cook things - residual heat cooking works really well for rice and any slow cooker recipe.
Grow herbs and salad leaves on a window sill
Grow soft fruit - your local allotment / neighbours with a raspberry cane/ strawberry / current / gooseberry will be more than happy to give you a cutting.
Look for local food pantries
If you need credit use a Credit Union. If you are saving support your local credit union by becoming one of their savers.

That’s an amazing post

WreckTangled · 20/04/2022 07:35

Thanks unescorted no idea what the issue was.

em pleased you’re feeling better.

spendy day today as we’re going to London. I also booked the wrong tickets so have had to rebook them but the Trainline said they’ll issue a full refund for the incorrect ones.

Unescorted · 20/04/2022 07:38

I can't take the credit for the information - I just collated everyone's ideas.

Em I hope you are feeling better. We have an awful cold here that keeps going around and around. It is my turn this week.

North Lovely to see you back - hope the holiday was a good one.

Humbug the weather has been very kind this Easter. It makes it so much easier to not go wild in the aisles with paid for activities to keep the kids from killing each other.

The salad leaves have all germinated.... I was not sure they were still viable because some of them came from the original Frugaleer seed pack that @Lonelyoversharer sent me when things were really hard in the unescorted household. I am hoping that I have the same success with the flowers and vege I planted up at the weekend.

Found you, that's an amazing first post for the thread!
Another frugal day at a nearby park with an amazing playground. Took a packed lunch and said before we went that we were not getting ice creams due to obscene amount of Easter chocolate we still have! Dcs accepted this and didn't even ask, bless them!

R2G · 20/04/2022 16:36

I have had an expensive day as I needed to renew all the children's passports. It won't pay for the whole thing but it has sent me 20 pounds overdrawn so I'm doing surveys today to get me back straight. I have 15 pounds built up so getting another fiver and then transferring to avoid bank charges.

If you want to try doing surveys (I do an hour a day for about 3 pounds a day) you can use this link and get 40p to start off with.

I'm inviting you to join AttaPoll. Get paid to take surveys. Download the app here: attapoll.app/join/skawm

ememem84 · 20/04/2022 21:22

I think there will be a lot of new names. I had to try so many combinations of emails and passwords to get back in.

I am sorry for all the confusion... although not ofy my making.

Payday. Phew.

ememem84 · 21/04/2022 06:31

Ds came into our room at just before 5. Bad dream. Then dd woke up (lost her dummy). Then catface decided she needed attention too. Ds in our bed snoring his head off. So I’ve been dozing for the last hour or so. Could have done with more sleep but there we go.

cleaners come back to us today so that’ll be £64. A luxury I know. But in my mind money well spent. It buys me time. They’re just doing the regular clean I think today and I need to book in for a deep deep clean.

also paid £300 off my credit card. Sigh.

Unescorted · 21/04/2022 06:32

House building makes you appreciate pay day em

I picked up DS from college yesterday - in a part of town that is less financially insulated than around here. It was eye opening seeing how many people were keeping running totals as they walked around. The choices people were having to make were more difficult than branded or value. That change was already a given.

WreckTangled · 21/04/2022 07:36

My payday is tomorrow. My national insurance contributions have increased by £10.

Cinema today. And out for lunch, more money but that’s it for a few days and it’s all we’ve done all Easter.

CheeseMaiden · 21/04/2022 14:34

Hello, I’m a frugaleer newbie! I dipped my toes in with the no spend January thread at the start of the year and my finances definitely felt the benefit!
I hope you don’t mind me joining 😊

earsup · 21/04/2022 14:45

Spent a while examing the multi-pack offers in some supermarkets....about half the items were cheaper if bought separately....!!...tuna in sunflower oil, Asda, was 14p a can cheaper if bought separate....same size etc....!!...
won 2 £10 amazon vouchers by doing a survey after buying an item last month also...!...all seeds now in so no buying lots of annual plants...just a few...will save about £30 doing that.

ememem84 · 21/04/2022 16:58

£14 lunch with colleague. Smoked salmon and prawn salad and a coffee. Nice. I did pack lunch for myself but DH can have it tomorrow so it won’t be wasted.

cannot wait to go home and see clean house!

HumbugWhale · 21/04/2022 17:41

That's really bad the supermarkets do that earsup, it's taking advantage of people thinking they are saving money which seems especially bad at the moment.

I did well with yellow sticker bread today. I have frozen 2 sliced loaves for toast and have some crusty bread which will be involved in lunch tomorrow.

ememem84 · 21/04/2022 18:13

I hate when they do that @earsup so annoying. I’m usually the one who tries to do the maths too!

ds has just smashed my new glass lunchbox and coffee cup. Snatched my lunch bag as I picked him up from nursery then swung it about. Asked him to be careful abs he sulked and threw it in the ground. Ffs.

Wolfcub · 21/04/2022 18:24

Haven't been able to get into MN for days. Hope everyone is ok. Will try and catch up

Unescorted · 21/04/2022 20:07

Welcome cheese & ears. Every one is welcome here.

I hate the multibuy lottery. I will be sunk if they bring back ounces and pounds. It is so much easier to do the calculation if it is metric.

My seeds are in too... And the yellow sticker parsley and mint are doing well. I must have looked sad because dbro gave me half of his root cuttings from the French Tarragon. Salad is doing well too.

HalfWomanHalfChocolate · 21/04/2022 23:12

Hi all, can I please slink back? Was a regular (with a festive user name) until I disappeared 18m ago - stuff happened and I had a difficult time for a bit and didn’t really feel up to ‘talking’. A couple of you reached out and sent me lovely messages while I was MIA - thank you, I really appreciated it ❤

Anyway, onwards and hopefully upwards! Consultancy work turned into fixed term contract, which is now turning permanent. Not my dream job but a nice team, decent organisation and it’s flexible about home working - about half and half. I’ve been part time but am having to go full time, partly because of the workload (was pretty much working the 5th day without pay anyway) but also because the money is very handy with the cost of living going up, not to mention the NI contributions. I’m going slightly less than full time, basically buying some extra AL to help cover the school holidays (DC has SN and can’t go to clubs etc). Full time is going to be a bit of a shock to the system though!

Not doing great at managing the money either. We live within our means but need to do biiiiig building work and would like to be saving much more each month. We had the capital all ready for our building work but inflation is outrunning us and we’re having a lot of trouble finding a builder too - they’re all massively oversubscribed here. Sigh.

So to get to where we want to we need to trim the discretionary spending A LOT. Food and emotional spending are my issues DH is also wfh mostly now, and he’s the type to put the heating on before putting a jumper on, argh!

Anyway, I’ve missed you all - haven’t kept up completely but have lurked in and out, nice to see so many familiar people still here.

Unescorted · 22/04/2022 06:23

It is soooooooo lovely to have you back. half - in my stress baking episode I kept channeling my inner you as I tried to ice the cakes.

I am being abandoned by my family this weekend - one back to uni, 2 working. I may use their absence to give the house a really good clean. I live a rock & roll life.

OP posts:
Wolfcub · 22/04/2022 06:42

Half I am so pleased to see you. We have really missed you and we've talked about you often. Congrats on the permanent contract. The cost of living squeeze is really biting isn't it, I need to ring the tax man today which I think will result in my take home being less and I've not really seen the NI impact yet but I imagine it won't be good
