marthasmum · 22/01/2022 18:39

-humbug soup sounds lovely.
mrs and wolf sorry to hear about tough times. My family didn't have a lot of money at all when we were small and we were the kids clothed from jumble sales too. Money was very tight compared to the people around us, but we still had enough to eat and a house. I am really reminding myself at the moment how fortunate I am, any time I feel
a bit stressed about covering expenses I tell myself to get a grip. It's easy to lose perspective when your circumstances improve I think.

Alfiemoon1 · 22/01/2022 19:57

Spends today £50 tea out £94 in Denby on pasta bowls and noodle bowls thought they would also be good for soup £7 new bra for dd and £20 smelly bits to put away for birthday and Christmas presents.

ememem84 · 22/01/2022 20:02

£40 stables. £18 shop - pull ups for dd and some prawn crackers for dinner. Made chow mien with rice, crackers and steamed edamames. Yum.

Feel rotten. Full of snot snot cold. Ick. Taken the last of a pack of expired Sudafed to help the congestion. In bed now.

Mrsmadevans · 22/01/2022 20:14

Martha thank you and right back at you lovely , l know re being lucky to have what we have now but l will never forget having to answer the door to the milkman when l was little about 9 and he was horrible to me because l didn't have the full amount to completely pay the bill. Mum had only left me half of it because she didn't have enough. It was the same when the Ins man came around and the catalogue lady and the Paraffin man and the baker , l could go on and on Hmm
Glad you got the matching bowls you wanted Alfie Smile
Hope you feel better soon Em have a good night sleep lovely Flowers Your Chinese meal sounds delicious yummy! Smile

I think I live in frugaleers central.... no 15p wrapping paper bargains here. Christmas was done & dusted by the 12th night - even in Tesco. ears well done.

Mrs - I went to pay my car tax by installments for the first time in 5 and a bit years (I bought my lease car). I put in that I wanted a monthly DD until I realised it was £20 for the whole year.

Love I have my fingers crossed for your DD.

I have a really lovely Denby butter dish - I have had it for many moons & proves that if you buy something that you love and it is good quality it turns out to be better value in the end. At the time it was reduced, but still sharp intake of breath at the amount. When I did my clear out after Christmas all the bits I got rid of were the ones I bought because I thought they were a bargain... except the £5 towels from 25 years ago..... they are many times mended and I am reluctant to make them into bike rags.

Had a good day in the sales for me today....had my eye on 3 lovely bright Benetton jumpers...xmas gifts for me.....were £80...dropped to £43 and today were £29 so got them....very pleased...!!

lifelongfrugaleer · 23/01/2022 07:37

I’m so envious you have Benetton . I love Benetton jumpers

The Denby is an investment I’ve still got dinner plates and milk jugs from my wedding set. The rest broke though.

Spendy day yesterday £71 aldi, £15 Iceland £40 dog harness. £18 pets at home, £9 home bargains and same the range

ememem84 · 23/01/2022 07:50

DH has ordered me and my snotty face to stay in bed. So that’s what I’m doing.

Dm keeps trying to give me a butter dish. So appalled is she that we don’t have one. But I only use proper butter for baking. So keep it in the freezer.

Have cancelled my hair appointment on Tuesday. If I’m still feeling rough (which is likely to be honest) sitting in a hot place with mask on for a few hours won’t help.

lifelongfrugaleer · 23/01/2022 08:01

I don’t use my butter dish at all.
Good plan starting in bed em.

My car tax is £150 and that reminds me it’sl being serviced next week so must wash the mobile stable. Can’t leave it for the poor garage person

SingToTheSky · 23/01/2022 08:50

:o at the butter dish. If you don’t need one it’d just clutter up the counter!

I’ve not been updating spends on here but I have written everything on a note on my phone all month so far. We’ve definitely had less food out/delivered so that’s progress. Quite spendy online, mainly revision/study books for DD1 (year 10) and DS (year 8 but home educated).

I keep hearing good things about denby! Our crockery is a mismatched mess of chipped stuff.

Alfiemoon1 · 23/01/2022 09:37

We have a Denby outlet shop near us so it’s cheaper. We’ve had our previous marks and spencer dinner set for 21 years as we got it as a wedding present we used it for everyday use but bits have broken over the years and it’s discontinued so decided to start a new collection so are buying bits of the Denby set at a time. Both my mum and sister have had Denby for over 20 years and they can still get replacement pieces if they break one so we thought we would treat ourselves

lifelongfrugaleer · 23/01/2022 09:39

Actually that reminds me there is a Denby outlet about an hour away. I just went matalan white when we moved as dh + granite = chips and breaks. Hence most of my old Denby gone

Happierwithouthim · 23/01/2022 10:00

I actually use my butter dish, it's the only item from my marital dishes I still use!

Alfiemoon1 · 23/01/2022 10:09

Get plenty of rest and fluids em hope you feel better soon I’ve woke up feeling a bit snotty and with a bit of a productive cough feel ok but will do a lateral flow test just in case
My car tax is £20 for the year tried to do it online but wouldn’t let me so will try again after my mot and service this week

Unescorted · 23/01/2022 10:43

How can not have butter dishes? Heathens. Please tell me that you don't use mid fraction crude oil on your toast. Next you will be telling me that you keep eggs and tomatoes in the fridge.

I am still showing as positive on my LFT. I am going to browse Amazon before the scratches in th front door get any deeper.

SingToTheSky · 23/01/2022 11:16

I use a butter dish, don’t have any spread in the house.

I do keep tomatoes and eggs in the fridge though

Taytocrisps · 23/01/2022 11:19

I forgot to mention that I've to pay DD's teachers for correcting her mock exam papers. I've no objection to paying for the work and time involved, but I've to pay each teacher individually and I've to pay them cash. So it's €20 for Teacher A and €10 for Teacher B and €9 for Teacher C and €8 for Teacher D etc. I mostly use my Debit card to pay for things but I've had to withdraw cash sums and pay for things with cash in order to get enough cash/change to put in all the envelopes. It's a lot harder to keep track of spending when you're paying cash. I've been trying to hold onto all my receipts. I also had to buy DD a P.E. top for school. It seems crazy spending money on school uniform items when DD will finish school in a few short months (end of May, to be precise). But DD plays basketball after school and says she needs an extra top. To be fair, I don't have a dryer so it can be hard to get things dry quickly.

I've two family members celebrating birthdays this week so I need to buy birthday cards later. I also need to pay a €10 deposit for the meal on Friday night.

lifelongfrugaleer · 23/01/2022 11:41

Haha I keep tomatoes in the fridge
And (whispers) I don’t really like butter but keep some in for dh, mash and baking.
And we use that spread stuff too

Runs away while waiting for ban or explosions Grin

Wolfcub · 23/01/2022 11:44

Tomatoes live in the fridge. Eggs do not. Butter is used for cooking. Butter spread (the fecking expensive danish one) is for toast, sandwiches etc

Alfiemoon1 · 23/01/2022 12:00

I don’t own a butter dish and tomatoes go in the fridge only use butter for cooking
My fridge stinks this morning so dh has been commissioned to finding the offending item and dispose of it. I am tiny and it’s a big fridge so I suspect it’s something he’s shoved on the top shelf right at the back way out of my reach and eye sight

ememem84 · 23/01/2022 12:19

Eggs live in a ceramic chicken.
Tomatoes in the fridge. Or on windowsill if they’re from the garden and a bit green.

DH likes to buy flora. So that’s what we use except when I go off liste and buy lurpack.

I’m in bed with dd and catface. Dd needed a nap. Catface always naps. And I had a burst of energy so cleared out wardrobe and under bed. Hoofed out a lot of stuff. I had 18 pairs of tights. Kept 3. Work trousers have been halved. So now only have the ones I love. Same for other tops etc.

lifelongfrugaleer · 23/01/2022 14:01

Using up stuff by making cookies

HumbugWhale · 23/01/2022 15:49

We have a butter dish. We do keep eggs and tomatoes in the fridge but mainly because we don't have much space in our kitchen but we have 2 fridges (one in the garage).

Startagaintoday · 23/01/2022 19:59

I agree tomatoes in fridge. Eggs in ceramic chicken.. Today NSD mainly as walked 15 miles.
