@marthasmum

Oh em- that’s disappointing, I thought it would be more than that! meadow lovely to hear from you and sending hugs. As unescorted says it’s tough enough without complications. I hope the latest scare hasn’t turned out to be anything big. Here’s a frugal dilemma. DS1 has dropped his phone in the bath and not working. DS2 has left his on the bus! Both iPhone 7s, one still in contract (🤬) one was a refurbished one. Can claim on insurance but total £150 in excess and would mean 2 claims. We already have one from a burglary. Would get about £700 towards cost of phones though. So would you do this, or would you suck it up and buy them both refurbished ones again (about £250 for two?) insurance broker advises it’s probably not worth the claim.
I'd just buy a replacement I think, I've had the same with dd2, she is very careless and a week after smashing the screen on her iPhone, she dropped it and now the picture is terrible. Annoying because it cost £80 to replace the screen, I'm tempted to buy a £10 pay as you go!
HumbugWhale · 08/11/2021 14:52

Sorry you didn't get more for your jewellery Em, would the £11 help pay for the piercing at least so you can wear the earring?

£51 to fill the small car with petrol. I don't remember it ever costing so much and the light wasn't even on!

ememem84 · 08/11/2021 15:32

That’s the thinking humbug

I was initially a bit disappointed. But at the end of the day it’s out of my house. So that’s all good.

I also bought some jewellery cleaner today (amazon) as some of the stuff I have and do wear is filthy. So need to give it a good shine.

I would get the refurbished ones too. Not necessarily iPhones either.

Have you tried the box of rice trick for the one that was dropped in the bath? Bury the phone in uncooked rice in an airtight container. Leave for a week or two - most of the time the rice soaks up the moisture and it works again.

MeadowHay · 08/11/2021 19:06

Em Do you have a recommendation for jewellery cleaner? I could probably really do with some too especially for earrings...

Spends today: £36ish on a t shirt and a dress from Joanie online, and the p&p. Bit indulgent tbh as I don't really need them but oh well they were in the sale...and the dress is button down so BF-friendly. Still haven't mastered the art of a discreet latch on, feel like my DD was better and quickly finding her way on whereas DD always fusses and wriggles about in the opposite direction for ages so I end up standing with my whole boob out wiggling it around in front of his face for ages, not very discreet...! I'm someone who literally never has the slightest bit of cleavage on show at all so I do find this aspect of BF uncomfortable even though I know I shouldn't.

DM home from hospital today and in good spirits. Apparently she's been advised to isolate for a few days to try and avoid picking up an infection as 50 per cent of people who have this op end up hospitalised again with infection, so not sure when I will be able to see her. Might get DH to drop flowers and stuff round for her tomorrow tho.

marthasmum · 08/11/2021 20:09

Thanks all for suggestions. I will try the rice again - did try it but not for long enough! They are usually reasonably careful and DD is super good at looking after her possessions so I think I've been lucky so far

lifelongfrugaleer · 08/11/2021 21:03

Refurbishment phone imo for those £ differences.
Gosh metal prices are low.

ememem84 · 08/11/2021 22:01

meadow I bought this one. Cheapest one Amazon had. And never used it before. So not sure if I’d recommend. But. I’m going to give it a go!

£18.50 on 12 months supply of antihistamines for me and my DH and £17.9 on a new phone case. Since WFH and then retiring I have no need for handbags. But I don't always have big enough pockets for my phone/cards. This goes cross body so should solve that problem

MeadowHay · 09/11/2021 18:37

£130ish Matalan online on clothing bits for me, DH, DD and DS. Still feels odd typing DS like it's not real yet haha even though he's nearly 4w now.

Fearofawelshplanet · 09/11/2021 19:19

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome back everyone. Nice to see new names too! Smile I have missed this thread. Working from home more now and not a vegetarian after 15 years for health reasons, so a nsd and eating all the food everyone else wastes. Happy days! Weathers awful in Swansea, all the blankets are out and the heating is staying offGrin

lifelongfrugaleer · 09/11/2021 20:33

£140 on curtains need rail hooks though

Mrsmadevans · 09/11/2021 22:11

@Fearofawelshplanet hello my lovely it's been so long since you have been here welcome back Flowers

ememem84 · 10/11/2021 06:12

Morning!

Gym last night as I needed to get back into the routine. Have also been up since 545 and have done a meditation (with headspace app). Trying to take back some of the day for me. It wasn’t working at the end of the day so thought I’d try the beginning. Quite nice actually.

Working 5 days this week instead of my usual 4. But then working 3 next week to make up for it.

Ds is having his first sleepover without us at grandma and granddads (dparents) on Friday. So excited for him!

Yesterday £10 on passport photos. I paid for the renewal a few weeks ago just kept forgetting to do the pictures. So these are done and I’ll pop it in the post today. Yay.

£50 getting keys cut £50!!!!

Fearofawelshplanet · 10/11/2021 19:04

FlowersMrsmadevans, I always return! Thank you. Great to read everyone's news. Speedy recovery Medow...
NSD! Aiming for one tomorrow too!

marthasmum · 10/11/2021 20:19

Blimey life £50 for keys feels a lot. But I can see how it adds up. We need a small repair doing on our chimney as it’s leaking on our wood burner. Whilst researching to find someone to do this I’ve realised that you’re supposed to have your chimney swept every year at least. We’ve lived here 10 years and had it swept zero times!! Though we don’t use the wood burner that much. I feel like I’ve spent years ignoring the costs of being an homeowner as I had no spare cash, now I’m trying to catch up it seems to be very expensive to be a proper grown up 😳

HumbugWhale · 10/11/2021 20:27

£50 getting keys cut £50!!!!
50 pounds??? I hope you are getting a lot of keys for that!

Nice to see you back @Fearofawelshplanet

Mrsmadevans · 10/11/2021 20:28

Fifty quid 😱. They are 3 quid a key here.

Mrsmadevans · 10/11/2021 20:29

Not Good is it Martha le sigh

Lovemaltesers · 10/11/2021 20:58

£50!!!! Oooof.

Totally agree martha. £120 to service the boiler really annoys me… takes them about 30 minutes. But something a grown up pays for. I only started getting it serviced after boiler broke after owning a house for 7 years.

Started Christmas shopping here. ££s being constantly spent.

One more day at work this week!

lifelongfrugaleer · 10/11/2021 21:02

2 keys are so old they have to be ordered so that was £13. 6 front door and 2 back door with a discount too

£120 to service the wood burner Friday too.
No idea when it was done. Knowing my luck it will be condemned
