Em - yes, staying close to home would (in theory) save on accommodation. But part of the reason to go to university is to move away from home. It's increasingly difficult for graduates, if they are starting their working lives in London, to live independently. So many of our neighbours/peers/friends children have moved back home after university because even if they are earning reasonable salaries, London rents mean they just can't save for their own places one distant day.
But it strikes me as an opportunity to move away, see another part of the country, maybe think about working, living, - dare I say it - buying in a different place than our corner of the south east where he's mostly always been, with a world view mostly shaped by family and school.
But we'll see! he's already got the A level grades, and has various deadlines for portfolio submission over the next 7 weeks, so he's just cracking on with that.
Snow here today and I am not in the mood for anything very much. I have to go to Aldi though.
