Lots of people doing a specific course near me have not got their grades as their colleges haven’t received them!. It’s just awful isn’t it.

I’m feeling a bit more awake now, film day didn’t last long though as the DC got bored so we made muffins (pic attached, you can see Maggie dog eating the bits DS2 has dropped😂). DH is home in half hour and I cannot wait to hand the DC over to him and go for a nap!.

Oh no sorry £23.47 on a subway. Baby brain!

Wolfcub · 13/08/2020 17:45

Lonely, Unescorted and other crafty folk any tips for tiling a wooden table top?

OP posts:
Unescorted · 13/08/2020 18:17

Not something I have attempted - so I would head straight to you tube Wolf

ChristmasSeacow · 13/08/2020 18:37

Thanks Granny, great tips and much appreciated! (And yes, do stay!). Rhossili is on my list but DM is with us and not keen on lots of steps or tricky walks (bad knee) so we were hesitant. If the weather permits we’ll try your tip to go along The beach to where the shipwreck is - my Dc would love that!

The weather isn’t looking too good for beaches but we’ll have to see how the storminess pans out. Most days have been brighter than the forecast.

We went to mumbles today and had an ice cream from Joe’s (I only saw your posts afterwards, Granny and Mrs). It was very tasty, but we’ll be going back and will definitely try the other place next time 👍🏻. I’m also very full of fish n chips, there’ll be no need for dinner tonight!

We’ve booked for Caerphilly castle on Sunday. We all do love a castle... Grin, just hoping it doesn’t pour down all day!

North I hope DS is feeling a little more positive (though totally understandable if he’s wallowing a bit). He’s had such a tricky time and put up with so much, and so brilliantly too, he sounds like such a lovely chap. I hope he finds a way through to something that inspires him. Is an appeal worthwhile? Especially since he’d missed so much school earlier (would that have affected his predicted grades, even though he might have made up some ground before the actual exams?) .

I know it must feel like the end of the world but there’s so much beyond this in life. A-levels are important for the next step but each stage of life brings new opportunities, for those who make the best of each chance. I was thinking the other day about my own school A-level cohort, where there’s only a fairly weak correlation between A level results / prestige of uni and eventual career ‘success’, whatever that means. Especially for the late blooming boys, who seem to have flourished over the years. We all get lucky breaks, have setbacks, come to forks in the road and make choices... it’s just so hard to have a setback at the very beginning Flowers

northender · 13/08/2020 19:28

Well we spoke to first choice uni & it doesn't seem like there will be any movement, but college have submitted a mitigating circumstances form to them. It's so frustrating as we're sure his college grade for maths would have been C which would have got him in and a C was definitely realistic for him. We will ring again in the morning, but to be honest I'm thinking he'd be better with some certainty and so his insurance place is probably the way to go. He has calmed down and is more amenable to that idea now. He's gone to Liverpool with his mates who have been brilliant with him and really positive. He's dealt with so much over the past 3 years and will come out of it stronger in the end.
Sorry my posts have been all about me today, will get back to normal tomorrow.
Hope your dd celebrates in style unescorted x

SnugglySnerd · 13/08/2020 19:33

I feel your pain Lonely, my mum happened to be here the other day when I was putting away the shopping and she was aghast at how much fresh stuff we had and said we'd end up wasting it all. That was on Sunday, it is now Thursday and today I have been out for milk, cheese, bread and we had fish and chips for tea. We have about 6 apples, 3 eggs and 1 banana left out of the fresh stuff I bought. Like the laundry it is never-ending!

ememem84 · 13/08/2020 19:58

We can’t have egg chair. Apparently it’s impossible to order from
B&q. Can’t do it online. Can’t do it instore. Online customer services say I can do it instore. Store say I can do it online.

Waaaaaa

ChristmasSeacow · 13/08/2020 20:34

Snuggly and Lonely I too feel it! We’ve been here 5 days and have already eaten 2 boxes of cereal, 3 cucumbers, 3 bags of salad, 700g cherry tomatoes, ham, a huge block of cheese, peppers... the list goes on. Ocado has just brought my second delivery of the trip (and I did a top up for berries) and the fridge is bursting, but I’m sure it’ll all be gone by Tuesday!

I do have too many biscuits and crisps though - I’m always afraid of undercatering Grin

North I’m glad his mates are being supportive and he is feeling a bit more positive. Good on him.

howlathebees · 13/08/2020 20:56

North would he be happy with his insurance choice?. I’m glad his friends have been so supportive

ChristmasSeacow · 13/08/2020 21:11

Ooh, could I ask Granny for a bit more advice?

We’ve been looking up beaches and the two factors we have to work around are:

  1. We have my mum with us - fairly fit but not especially good on uneven terrain as she’s a bit nervous of losing her footing and has a dodgy knee. She did the cliff top walk along three cliffs bay to Pennard Castle with us yesterday but was pretty stressed by some of the uphill bits where it was really steep and uneven. I think if she could have turned back she would have! We also have a just-turned three-year-old who is a pretty good walker but slooow. So we don’t want to bite off more than we can chew!
  1. DS7 is autistic and has a severe phobia of dogs, so ideally we’d want to go to a beach that doesn’t have dogs, or at least where we can keep our distance. He’s okay if they are a way off but if one approaches us he will literally climb up my body (and if I happen to be sitting down he ends up sitting on my head while I try to stop him breaking my neck!) . And the screaming 😫

I think Falls Bay would be too much for mum, and possibly the steps down at Rhossili too. Just wondering how far/steep the walk is over the dunes at Hillend /Llangennith?

Mum is going home a couple of days before us so we might sneak in a trip to Rhossili then, if the weather allows.

Langland has been our best find so far - no dogs, easy access form the car park if carrying toys, picnics etc and great rock pools! But keen to try other places.

What a beautiful place to live!

LonelyOversharer · 13/08/2020 21:35

Did you find any cowrie shells seacow ? I remember walking across the dunes to the most amaaaazing beach (aged about 11!) on duck boards a lot of the way.

I wish I could take my kids to my "old" places. I truly detest living hand to mouth.

wolf I'd just go for it! A good flexible adhesive, with narrow grout lines. But yes, you tube is always the place for help I find!

north is there any way ds could defer, sit his exams in the autumn, and maybe if the world is getting better could he go back to plan A and travel to oz? So glad he has nice mates.

Apparently dd1 is off camping tomorrow. Using our tent that hasn't been out of its bag for 9 years! I take it that it (the tent) will be OK? It's been kept inside the whole time, not even in the fusty shed. It's a huge 6 man thing, we used exactly once, for 2 nights. Typical us.

AdoraBell · 13/08/2020 21:47

Congratulations to your DD unescorted 🍾

Sorry your DS had bad news north

Mixed bag here, 1 got in and the other has been rejected by every Uni she’s tried She was given a D despite the predictions, it may as well be a case of leprosy. We’re working on it but she couldn’t cope with calling more Unis today.

Bloody spendy day, £150 on lunch 😱 DH won’t be happy, fuck it.

Bornlazy · 13/08/2020 21:55

Well done to your beautiful talented daughter Unescorted Hope you got some nice champagne.

North I'm sorry your ds hasn't got the grades he deserves I really hope something can be done about it. The Scottish exam results were a total disaster and all grades are now being changed to what the teachers predicted as it seemed to be quite random which students were downgraded. It was never going to be easy this year but the Scottish Government have admitted they got it wrong.

Ds2 back at school today. Lots of handwashing and wiping but ok.

Work was boiling its hideous wearing the masks all day and behind my ears are killing me. So glad I'm off for the next few days

Wolfcub · 13/08/2020 22:18

Adora congratulations to one dd and commiserations to the other, that must have been a tough day to navigate for all of you. Fingers crossed for more luck with the calls tomorrow

OP posts:
northender · 13/08/2020 22:47

Oh Adora I feel your pain. I'm going to try begging tomorrow I think! Worth a try...

Unescorted · 13/08/2020 23:09

Adora that is such a difficult situation. Congratulations to them both. Even if one didn't get the grades she needed I think Sea sums it up really well - some people get their set back early others later. They have worked really hard and had to cope with a situation they could not have predicted. Most adults in a similar situation would have folded - both your DD and Norths DS are showing more resolve than everyone else I know. I wish them both the best of bestest wishes.

SnugglySnerd · 14/08/2020 07:02

Oh dear Adora, that sounds like a tricky situation. I hope you get some joy about university places soon. Congratulations to your other dd.

A miracle happened this morning and none of the dcs woke up until 6.48!

ememem84 · 14/08/2020 07:14

Only Dd is awake now...which is nice actually. Dh made tea and bottle and she’s in bed with us reading a book and playing with her bunny.

I didn’t get the grades I needed. I was devastated. There went my dreams of studying law with a year in Paris. Gone. My own fault though because I didn’t work hard enough. I thought I’d be ok. But nope.

I managed to get on a different course through clearing at the same uni.the.

I got my law qualification eventually. But took the long long way round. Degree in different subject. And did the law stuff while working.

north my very wise grandma told me once that things will be ok in the end. And if it’s not ok it’s not the end.

lifelongfrugaleer · 14/08/2020 07:35

Congratulations and commiserations to the DC Adora.

lifelongfrugaleer · 14/08/2020 07:38

I'm sure the tent will be fine lonely. Is she going far? Our tent is quite old and perfectly fine after storage.
Pity party away. That's what we are here for.

Ditto North, of course it's all about you and DS today.

Hey granny thanks for delurking.

So cancelled bank holiday plans. Will get £70 back from campsite and water park will give us credit to rebook.
Beach today I see chips, fair ground and slot machine in my future

Unescorted · 14/08/2020 07:47

Morning.

I have woken up to a very large shopping list propped on my computer. I am hoping some of it can be cobbled together from what we already have and the rest on the cheap from Ikea.

I am glad it is Friday.

grannycake · 14/08/2020 08:03

@ChristmasSeacow Caswell Bay, Oxwich Bay and Port Eynon are all accessible directly from car park. Oxwich and Port Eynon are all long beaches so easy to escape crowds. Caswell is busier but great for children.

If you access Rhossili from Rhossili village then it is very steep steps and probably not suitable for your mum. However, if you go to Llangennith and park at Hillend then there is a bit of a walk on a path through dunes to the beach. Same beach as Rhossili just the other end. Actual beach is about 3 miles long

grannycake · 14/08/2020 08:08

@ChristmasSeacow Also Caswell definitely do not all dogs in summer
Llangennith and Rhossili do. Link to dog info here www.swansea.gov.uk/dogsonbeaches

Swansea Bay beach is also good for access and dog bans and is often overlooked. Around Blackpill have things for children but if you need less crowds park by the Guildhall and cross over - again dogs restricted,

Shameless bit of promotion here - my son is a chef at The Secret Place on the seafront here - great coffee and cakes

Wolfcub · 14/08/2020 08:31

Morning all. Last day of my hols here and I'm not sure I'm any less exhausted than when I started it's been a tough couple of weeks. Considering where to go today with ds and i have totally neglected cleaning for the last week in favour of decorating and need to do either one or the other or both this weekend.

Unescorted I remember getting the student box from Ikea, it was about £40 and full of everything you need for a student kitchen
