Thats why I use Nesti Dante -aside from the fact its gorgeous Fluffy
They use an organic sustainable source and are very open about it.
I did have a go at making soap myself but its a blooming rabbit hole right there ! Grin

Bornlazy · 28/12/2018 15:26

I must admit I find soap quite hard work. It tends to go all gloopy and I find quite a lot of it gets wasted. I always have some in the bathroom, but I still use liquid soap for washing my hands as I think its more hygienic. I was brought up poor with having to wash my hair with soap or more often washing up liquid so I love being able to afford nice toiletries and would struggle to give them up.

QuiteisbringingFrugalback · 28/12/2018 15:37

Born
The posh soaps dont go gloopy .
I have my own soap dish and woe betide anyone who touches it .
Im a cheapskate so I use Waitrose bath stuff ( pretty sure its the same as the handwash)to top up china refillable handwash bottles .
Usually get 4 massive refills for 95p (buy on offer)
I love nice smellies but my lot dont care so nice for me and everyday for them Grin

ememem84 · 28/12/2018 15:49

Do method do refills? And can I use any other soap in the old bottles?!

I probably need a soap dish. May grab one if I see one in a sale somewhere.

QuiteisbringingFrugalback · 28/12/2018 15:56

I just had a lookem
Method do soap refills for £5.45 on Ethical Superstore -1 Litre

AutumnLeaves12 · 28/12/2018 16:19

Girlie is your dd doing clarinet grade 2 next? I'm doing it and it's harder. I keep trying to play high notes and it's like lifting weights.

After a run through all the scales and my three tunes I feel as though I've been to the gym.

£0 Yay!

thabks quite although I suppose any soap would work right?! I.e a cheap boots (or equivalent) bubble bath....

QuiteisbringingFrugalback · 28/12/2018 16:38

Yep -I found that some bubble baths made my hands dry but Waitrose doesnt.
I dont think anyone has ever noticed .
Saves a fortune and less plastic .
I could go to bar soap but Im not keen to multi use.

ememem84 · 28/12/2018 16:38

Eugh. I just checked. I have the “foaming” handwash. On amazon a refil is £13. Fuck. That. I’ll buy bubbley bath and hope for the best.

Fluffycloudland77 · 28/12/2018 16:39

Boots own brand bubble bath is palm oil free.

ememem84 · 28/12/2018 16:48

Will stock up.

Annoyed. I bought the boss a Christmas/New Years gift on amazon. A box of smokey bacon crisps. They haven’t arrived. Amazon say they’re lost.

I’ve asked for a refund. No messing about. Just refund me my £13 for the 36 packets.

ememem84 · 28/12/2018 16:49

THEyll probably arrive now....

Bornlazy · 28/12/2018 17:04

I mostly buy Aldi or lidl Anti bacterial liquid soap as its a bigger bottle and cheaper than branded. DH and DS1 go through a shocking amount of shower gel it does my head in. DS1 sometimes has three showers a day if he is at the gym.

AutumnLeaves12 · 28/12/2018 17:06

It's amazing that soap can be so complicated really isn't it?

I hadn't really thought about how many varieties there are.

OP posts:
ChristmasSeacow · 28/12/2018 17:23

I still use liquid hand soap - DS is a bit flummoxed by bar soap and I don’t like it in the kitchen - raw chicken etc. But I should defo try filling up dispensers with cheap bath stuff.

The frugal things I do (most of which have been mentioned) are:

  1. Take lunches to work, often leftovers
  2. Chilly bottle for water
  3. Contigo for tea (though it is almost too good - stays too hot to drink for hours!)
  4. I buy most of the DCs clothes in the sales (buying the next sizes up, iyswim). This works because DS doesn’t care what he wears and DD is too little to have an opinion - not for long though I suspect!
  5. I use Kidstart as my main cashback site as it rewards JL and Amazon (though Amazon doesn’t always track). Have earned over £150 for DS since I started!
  6. Use own brand washing powder and less than advised - doesn’t seem to make much difference
  7. I buy massive 5kg bags of pasta and rice which last a good while. Unfortunately I don’t seem to find huge bags of wholemeal pasta though
  8. For stuff I use regularly i stock up on offers - things like coconut milk, peanut butter, tinned tomatoes, cereal, butter for baking...
  9. Use own brand for most staples (very few exceptions)
10. Batch cook and freeze portions of things like chilli for a quick dinner - we almost never get takeaways. Also batch cook for the kids, who eat very little processed food (not on principle though -DS just won’t Hmm) 11. Don’t buy crisps and processed snacks (except nakd bars for DS) - kids mostly eat fruit or hm biscuits or cake 12. I mend things! Little holes in jumpers, split seams... taking care of little things makes them last longer and look better. I clean my shoes regularly too, use boot shapers, sweater shavers etc. 13. I don’t buy fast fashion - I’m not especially fashionable and don’t like the feel or appearance of most very cheap fibres. I buy nicer wool or wool mixes and look after things. Probably doesn’t save money but also doesn’t cost me more to buy less but nicer stuff

I love some of the other tips people are coming up with - I’ll defo take stuff back if not worn in the first couple of weeks!

I’ve spent the afternoon installing the printer on my work and new home computers - I am determined to start the new year having actually sorted out all my major niggles! I have also got the wireless printing to work from my phone and tablet 💪🏻

Tomorrow’s Jobs: put up the key rack in the hall which I had to move when I got the alarm replaced over 6 months ago . Then I won’t keep losing my keys. And plant the violets in the hanging basket out front (been there for weeks Hmm). And go through DD’s next size of clothes and put the ones that will fit her from now in her drawers. And finally take the Boden returns to Collect +.

Not spent much today - £3 on bus fares to take dc on a bus ride to a different play park (they were thrilled! And took hm peanut butter cookies for a snack) and £2 on a bag of spinach.

Meadow I pm’d you about clothes for your DD. Have a massive box of them Smile

Justanothermile · 28/12/2018 17:25

Fluffy - assume the Lush stuff doesn't contain palm oil?

snuggly. I'll need to check which Aldi ones when I go next. You've got me thinking that it might be Sainsbury's value range. I'll come back to you. I'm using Wilco's 'doesn't cost the earth' ones. £3 for 25. But all natural ingredients, recycled and recyclable packaging, vegan and aquatic life friendly etc etc. These have a wrapper but it dissolves in the wash. Much cheaper than the bigger named ecological brands.

£40 for nails and toes. In and out in 35 minutes. Record. Have a wedding on Sunday, hence toes in winter.

Justanothermile · 28/12/2018 17:28

I know that's not technically sustainable, as you mentioned in a previous post but better than chemicals, if you prioritise such things.

QuiteisbringingFrugalback · 28/12/2018 17:34

Will check out the Boots one -have a feeling I tried it before and it shredded DH hands.
Im sticking to my nice bar soap.
I would swap to Method but DH uses 3 pumps every time despite me telling him off Hmm

Im a make do and mender Sea Smile
I always clean, mend and store things properly.

ememem84 · 28/12/2018 17:40

I don’t make do and mend.

Frugal things I do:

Pack up lunches at least 4 times a week
Water bottle for refilling - this goes everywhere with me
I tend not to buy fast fashion - my style if you will is (according to a friend) “Ivy League preppy” currently I’m wearing navy skinnies black knee high flat boots with tan tops, a white skinny tank top and a joules dog jumper over the top. With a burgundy red pea coat over the top.

I try to buy second hand or i sale shop.

I’ve just picked up a pair of red skinnies in next for £16. These should do me until I need maternity jeans. I find next jeans stretch out somewhat

AutumnLeaves12 · 28/12/2018 17:40

I hadn't thought of the goo on bar soap keeping germs, but the article that I just read online says it's true.

I don't use liquid soap as it gives me eczema on my hands.

Does that mean that the next good option is more expensive bar soap that doesn't go goopy, as Quite says?

OP posts:
QuiteisbringingFrugalback · 28/12/2018 17:48

Its £4.75 for a 250g bar -lasts forever.

So yep frugal compared to shower gel or liquid soap.

AutumnLeaves12 · 28/12/2018 17:51

That's good to know Quite, thanks. It's this that you use isn't it?

www.nestidante.com/

I think I need to find the unscented version, but I'm sure there must be something. I use simple at the moment and it's like a massive ball of slime all the time, including the slime ball soap dish underneath. nice

OP posts:
QuiteisbringingFrugalback · 28/12/2018 18:00

Thats the one .
Im not keen on strong smells so I avoid the fruity ones .
Very clean smelling .
If you want unscented then some goat milk soap I bought at a country show once was lovely
It was Fulbroch Dairy.
Cant remember what was in it though.

AutumnLeaves12 · 28/12/2018 18:08

That's good to know, thanks. Smile

I'm in a right tangle now, because liquid soap gives me eczema on my hands and moisturiser does weird stuff to my stomach because how is that even possible.

Clearly what I need in life is more soap confusion.

Been out and swapped girls at Grandmas. My dad gave me two more bags of logs. They have a serious tree that had it's lower branches lopped in the summer...they need permission to get this done as it's a native beech --who

Spends...Hobbycraft £26, I did buy 6 balls if yarn, 3 v.reduced, 3 on 3for2. Yarn not needed.
Asda £50, stuff for the next few days, bit of christmas spends for dd3 (so may get £7 back), and some very reduced chocs.
Tescos £9 lollies and very very reduced chocs.

Big tubes of smarties are 50p if anyone uses them for cookies or just loves them.

Still getting etsy orders, which is v nice. Have 4 dogs to knit to go to america, and a pig.

We use anti-bac liquid soap. With 4 mucky kids it's a necessity here.

I have stockpiled two tubes of garlic puree! As it's imported from Italy.
