I really like the accent chat, and especially christmas's phonetic spellings of words. I'd love to go entirely phonetic for a while just for the hilarity. FWIW:

Aye tok lyke this.

Sometimes I say:

"Ach away ye' go. Wid ye' jist get ohn with i(t)"

This last t is silent and is replaced by a glottal stop.

One of my great challenges at the moment is that many of the people that I have to talk to here are posh English and say "rum" for room, and "gel" for girl.

When I try to talk to those people, I have to smooth out so much of my accent and so much of my vernacular English that really very little is left for actually communicating my meaning.

It's a puzzling business.

mammynowanauntyIRL · 15/11/2018 11:22

Autumn love it Smile

AutumnLeaves12 · 15/11/2018 11:37

Thanks Mammy Grin

Frustratingly, I spent my middle childhood at an independent English school in Paris, but I don't have any of that accent left, and the thought of changing my vowel sounds again to fit in here is really more than my poor brain can manage. So I may just have to sound funny and live with it.

Och aye the noo, and so on.

mammynowanauntyIRL · 15/11/2018 11:57

I dinnae ken Grin

AutumnLeaves12 · 15/11/2018 11:57

Well, quite...

AutumnLeaves12 · 15/11/2018 12:10

One of my posh friends the other day tried to meet me half way, and said "Mind how to you go! [that's what you say in Scotland isn't it?]"

It felt really weird though, because I have never in my life said "Mind how you go." Which really brought it home to me how subtle the rules of geographical language differences are.

Bornlazy · 15/11/2018 12:22

Autumn I have never said "Mind how you go" either, wonder if that's a more East Coast or Highland thing. I would be more likely to say "watch yir self" if I felt I had to advise someone to use caution Grin

AutumnLeaves12 · 15/11/2018 12:26

LOL! Born I think you must be right. I also say "mind yer self".

I feel as though I can communicate far better in writing, and I do wonder whether it's just because I feel inhibited about using the language that I have, and because I don't have the more socially acceptable version at my finger tips.

btw I am ROFL at "if I felt I had to advise someone to use caution ".

AutumnLeaves12 · 15/11/2018 12:27

A'm away te ma clarinet lesson now. I'll see ye in a bit.

mammynowanauntyIRL · 15/11/2018 12:29

Mind yerself is something I'd say too

mammynowanauntyIRL · 15/11/2018 12:30

I also say 'that's grand' a lot but not begorra I'm not a leprechaun Grin

moimichme · 15/11/2018 12:44

I can't really describe my accent very well...it has changed a lot over time. I think I subconsciously adapt to the way the other people are speaking, too.

£2.90 yesterday on bus and adorable ds who marched from the bus stop to Morrison's last night so that he could ride on the big toy car they have by the checkouts. 😂

mammynowanauntyIRL · 15/11/2018 12:58

My week just keeps improving - just got a work email notifying me of
two pay rises 2.75% next month and 2% will take effect Jan 2020 Grin

SneakyGremlins · 15/11/2018 13:15

See I sound quite northern but I was born in Southampton Grin lived in Germany when I was learning to talk (bilingual me Wink) and then moved to Belper (V Posh) and now live in a less posh town so my accent is very mongrel!

I also go more posh if talking to someone posh and vice versa.

SneakyGremlins · 15/11/2018 13:16

£3.60 spends today - best sandwich shop ever! even though the prices have gone up by 10p

Also spending 1.29 in Aldi shortly but that's all today.

Fluffycloudland77 · 15/11/2018 13:36

Nsd.

Making dried garlic in the halogen oven. The back doors wide open to get the smell out. 4 bulbs peeled and sliced.

AutumnLeaves12 · 15/11/2018 14:02

That's fantastic Sneaky. You can be our translater when we throw caution to the wind and all go to Germany on holiday together.

I'm back from my clarinet lesson now. I am learning to "cross the break" and have not yet hit a point where I have to give up because I turn out to be non-specifically garbage at music after all. Yay! £20

NursieBernard · 15/11/2018 14:04

I haven't posted for a little while as I seem to have been caught in a second wave of intense grief from my dad's death 2 months ago Sad

I have however managed to remain frugal as all I've managed to do is work, cry and sleep.

Today I have made a decision that 50% of the Christmas presents I buy are going to be pre-loved, this will probably be easiest with my youngest DS who is 7. I'm going to visit a near by town tomorrow that has an amazing amount of charity shops so should hopefully find some things there.

mammynowanauntyIRL · 15/11/2018 14:08

nursiebernard Flowers

AutumnLeaves12 · 15/11/2018 14:30

So sorry to hear that Nursie. I had a loss like that once and the very swift and efficient kind of grief can be very intense. I hope it ends swiftly for you as it did for me. I felt much better quite suddenly after 3 months. Flowers

Girliefriendlikesflowers · 15/11/2018 14:46

nursie 🌹

My dad is from Yorkshire and I find I pick up the Yorkshire accent really easily, 'now then' seems to be the Yorkshire equivalent to 'alright' in the south!

Back from the hairdressers, I now have beautiful blonde locks, she has put a curl in and if I do say so myself it looks fab!! Cost £125 but given I probably won't have it coloured again until my 50th that's fine. If I could work out how to post a photo with my face blotted out I would 😂

Girliefriendlikesflowers · 15/11/2018 14:48

autumn did you pass your exam? I told my dd that you have to sing in the clarinet exam and she was mortified!

Fluffycloudland77 · 15/11/2018 16:41

Nursie Ah you poor girl, no one tells you how hard these things are do they Flowers

My energy supplier want to raise my bill from £55 a month to £93 a month all winter so I don’t get a “bill shock” in the spring 🤦🏻‍♀️. I’ve worked it out that since the end of sept we’ve used £87 in 7 weeks. So £12 a week not £23. I’ve emailed but I can see me switching again 🙄

mammynowanauntyIRL · 15/11/2018 16:59

Ooh girlie sounds like a big chance for being fab @ forty Grin

Lodged cheque to my account from my df for Christmas fingers crossed it's not a crossed cheque I wasn't sure by looking at it Grin

Collected my glasses & got a voucher for 50% off another pair or it's worth 25% if someone else uses it, dd is saying she has difficulty seeing the board so it might be her. Will get her sight tested at Christmas.

52c on lighting candles when passing a church - all my coppers gone Grin

I'd no coins to pay for parking so we did our jobs quickly & got away with it Grin

AutumnLeaves12 · 15/11/2018 17:04

I haven't heard yet Girlie but thanks for asking. I keep reloading the website, but no results there so far.

The singing is only a tiny bit and it's fine to whistle or make the same pitch in any other way. I do think it's harder for young ones though. I've long since given up caring who hears me sing, after spending donkeys years singing ds to sleep. LOL!
