Margarine or butter!!

Yes, agree with Waitrose. If you shop at Ocado, you get both ranges. This is good to ensure best prices and range.

I've never been impressed with Tesco at all. The staff in our local one are horrible, Aldi and Lidl and Sainsbury's staff lovely.

Bornlazy · 19/08/2018 18:56

NSD today first in ages. Made lasagne for dinner tonight with mince I had in the freezer and it was very tasty. Some left over which will do tomorrow. Just wish I didn't hate cooking so much.

Did a bit more tidying today, will do a bit more tonight. Need to get to grips with ebay selling. I have two pairs of football boots I bought DS2 for Christmas that he never had on and don't fit now.

Snuggly hope you get a better sleep tonight. I remember well the sleepless nights and long days when you are so, so tired . Now I don't sleep because I'm menopausal - it never ends

Cag Get a stand mixer liker a K Mix with a dough hook. Then you can do bread if you want to. Mayonnaise, cakes, whipped cream.

Stand mixer
Silicone Round, square, loaf tins, no liners needed.
silicone muffin tin
Marble rolling pin
Digital scales
Cup measures for American recipes
Lemon zester
Baking sheet, biggest heaviest gauge you can run to
Lemon juicer if your food processor doesn't have one.

Measuring spoons form 8th of a teaspoon to table spoon.

Fluffycloudland77 · 19/08/2018 19:04

Wire racks to cool stuff on. Poundland do them.

WreckTangled · 19/08/2018 19:07

Oh yes rolling pin! My cheese grater has a lemon zester on it.

Fluffy should I get silicone tins? I've not used them before but they do look good.

Bornlazy · 19/08/2018 19:08

I quite like Tesco as I like their deliveries the best. Love that you can book a slot for the same day if you forget something. I do shop in Aldi and Lidl too, in fact there's not a shop out there that I haven't shopped in... We don't have Ocado and I have never properly got to grips with Waitrose.

Justanothermile · 19/08/2018 19:09

Lots of my baking stuff was my grans and she died 25 years ago. It was probably twice that old when I got it. Makes me happy though even though some of it is now a bit shit!

ScandiLady · 19/08/2018 19:23

cag I thought you moved into rental accommodation? In Denmark we are not allowed to change the interior design of the rental.
lonely well done on the mortgage Flowers
em wish we could overpay in mortgage but its not really the done thing and would cost quite a bit in fees to not be worth it...
My friend called me to ask if my dh could pick up her ds up tomorrow because she has a doc appt for her dd. Her ds and pur dd1 is in the same kindergarten although different departments. Felt abit weird about it so asked about her reaction yesterday. Apparently it's a minor thing and as long as we just remember he's a boy compared to our girls no issue. I then said that if/when he's here he'll be treated the same as the girls and have to help out with eg put plates in dishwasher or wipe the table after making a dough. My friend thinks I need to remember there is a difference between boys and girls and I kinda just pointed out that besides the genitals I really couldn't see the difference she just shrugged it off and said "please don't make it difficult for your dds to get boyfriends in the future" I didn't comment on it. But the call did end with her saying she will ask her mom first if she can have him.... I am surprised at her behaviour... I knew we had different parenting styles but not so different...

Oh nsd both days

I would put a word in for very lightweight mixing bowls. I have a big old fashioned ceramic mixing bowl and I find it hard to hold it up when I scrape the cake mix out. I don't know if that exists, but it should.

WreckTangled · 19/08/2018 19:39

Take I use Ikea plastic bowls or the metal one that goes with the mixer

Scandi I can't believe some people still think like that!!

Girliefriendlikesflowers · 19/08/2018 19:40

Blimey scandi your friend needs a time machine to take her back to the 1950s pronto 😮 really weird behaviour.

cag cake tins, a loaf tin, a large mixing bowl, wooden spoons. We have these sheets on reusable non stick parchment that can be used on any shape tin etc and easily washed and reused. We've had our ones for about 10 years! !

The loaf tins are useful for banana loaf which is a great way of using up brown bananas and very easy to make.

I'd like a proper mixer but they're quite pricey, I mix everything with a normal hand whisk.

Swimming was £5 this afternoon.

Wolfcub · 19/08/2018 19:46

Scandi your “friend” is bang out of order

I’m glad I’m not the only Tesco hater, I loathe Tesco

I am not a fan of silicone bakeware at all. Sainsbury’s do some great heavy gauge tunes and trays which are often on offer

I second the need for a mixer especially with any joint issues. I not have the small kenwood stands mixer very compact and highly useful but prior to that I had a dualitt handheld which was amazing

The easiest things to make straight off are muffins using oil rather than butter and a fruit loaf cake. Also any yougurt based cake (the French teach children to bake using yougurt pots as a measure) are both delicious and keep better! Don’t overinvest, go for one type of tray/pan a month try a few recipes for that shape of tin and then move on

I haven’t baked or cooked properly since h left. I really need to get back to it

Bornlazy · 19/08/2018 19:53

She does sound very old fashioned Scandi. Do you think that's her own views or her DH?

TakeItSlow · 19/08/2018 19:54

I really like Tesco

QuitelovesStrictly · 19/08/2018 19:54

Scandi
Is she a surrendered wife ?
What absolute nonsense !
Even my very old fashioned MIL didnt think like that .
at the boyfriends comment -I would have exploded !
I would start with a couple of loaf tins and sponge tins Cag.
I prefer tins with a liner as I find it hard to pick up the silicone ones (dodgy arm/shoulder and have dropped them )
I like the liners as I leave them on and the crumbs stay in the loaf tin liner when the DC attack the cake Grin
Mmmm have just eaten Aldi Belgian chocolate mousse with some berries .
Heaven for 49p

Fluffycloudland77 · 19/08/2018 20:02

wreck I like the lack of liners. Plus it doesn't clang when it falls out the cupboard.

I cook with oil where I can. It's cheaper.

ememem84 · 19/08/2018 20:10

I love Tesco. And Sainsbury’s. But probably because we don’t have them here.

scandi what?!?! Your friend is a whackadoodle. Although Dm is one of those “oh poor dsis how can she cope without w boyfriend?!” Types. dsis is coping well with her new boyfriend which only Dh and I know about and have to lie for her about she knows I hate doing this so owes me big time

mammynowanauntyIRL · 19/08/2018 20:15

I need links for good recipes, dough for rolls sounds good as dc could have these for school

€15.70 in local pub on 2 soda water & lime, 3 coke & packs of tayto, watched my home team lose by 1 point & I was the only supporter for our team surrounded by a packed pub of supporters for the winning team Sad

Been on a 3km historical loop walk with dc, ds whinged from halfway through and I ended up with him on my back for rest of it Hmm

I don't like the crust on cakes made in silicone tins Blush

Wolf I used to bake more when myself & h we're together too, also cooking has become more a necessity than a joy too, hopefully will get that back in time

Scandi your friend is crazy 😜

Em delighted for your sis after tough time she's been through

SnugglySnerd · 19/08/2018 20:21

Scandi she's bonkers! What a completely outdated view! She'd hate it is our house: dh just did all the ironing while I watched TV with a cuppa!

ChristmasSeacow · 19/08/2018 20:24

I’m all for live and let live, Scandi, but I would have struggled not to say something quite harsh in response to her attitude. Saying you will make it difficult for your DDs to get boyfriends - let’s hope they don’t want a boyfriend with that awful 1950s attitude! Her DS may find it hard to find a girlfriend (or boyfriend Wink) if they’ve got any sense.

Cag I pretty much agree with Wreck’s list but also with the people who advise starting small with equipment and building up. I’d go for a pair of loose bottomed sandwich tins (8” is most useful for most recipes) and a 1 lb loaf tin to start. Reusable silicone liners are good but I don’t bother for the sandwich tins as I can run a knife under the base to loosen the cake. A stand mixer would really save your energy But they are heavier to move around and wash up than just a lightweight plastic or stainless steel bowl and hand held mixer. They also take up a fair bit of space. So pros and cons there. Oh, and I’d advise getting a couple of new wooden spoons and marking the handles so you only use them for cakes. Much nicer than the odd hint of curry in your banana bread Wink
