You know me too well seacow :o yes, I am not at all green fingered and am a complete newbie! We will start planting stuff outside next year (except chucking some wildflower seeds at the wildlife area we are keeping by the shed) but would like something indoors ASAP.

SunnyLikeThursday · 16/07/2018 17:10

Sorry to hear there were no answers Girlie. That's frustrating.

Is anybody else here in their 40s or older? I'm 42 and my period is quite light now and only lasts three days, which is quite surprising every time. That's only a recent development. Very handy for things like swimming trips though, and also frugal.

Wreck that's very interesting about the sugars. I had no idea about any of that. I suppose diabetes is one of these conditions that is kind of invisible from the outside. Glad they took good care of you. Flowers

Fluffycloudland77 · 16/07/2018 17:37

Green Jinn has ktc tinned chick peas free in Sainsburys, and shopmium has half price/free vegetarian stuff from Sainsburys.

I'm on a frugal food thread & am going to try out quiche. It looks really cheap to make.

Progesterone based contraceptive if you don't want heavy periods. I love mine.

Girliefriendlikesflowers · 16/07/2018 17:41

Yes it is a bit frustrating re dd, I mentioned some concerns regarding her throat as well (two years ago her throat swelled up so much she ended up in itu) as she has had another scary throat infection this year and the consultant said 'she will probably be fine now' I burst out laughing! ! Probably fine really doesn't reassure me!!

Dd seems okay, they don't know why her hearing is deteriorating so will check again in a couple of months, if has deteriorated any further i assume will investigate then.

cag you could have a go at growing an avocado plant from the stone, they are quite fun to grow, let me know if you want instructions! Otherwise cacti are pretty hardy!!

My periods are getting worse as I get older 😟 closer together and heavier plus hormonal migraines, ugh.

Wolfcub · 16/07/2018 17:45

I’m with Fluffy on the life changing nature of contraceptives for heavy periods

SunnyLikeThursday · 16/07/2018 17:48

Girlie mine got heavier and closer together too, and then suddenly seemed to lose interest altogether. Maybe you're in the bit just before it gets better?

That's really odd about your dd's throat infections and ear trouble. I wonder if something mysterious is causing a bit of inflammation back there? Is she a possibility for dairy and wheat trouble? That's what causes the trouble with my ds, both hearing and throats, and also in the nose. Sound important if her hearing is deteriorating though.

Girliefriendlikesflowers · 16/07/2018 18:01

I can't tolerate any hormonal contraception as it causes my mental health to nose dive unfortunately.

No idea sunny will be guided by the consultant, if I cut wheat and dairy out I'm not sure what we would eat! I know you feel a lot of health problems are diet related but I'm not entirely convinced myself.

found a no roll vegan pastry recipe too. Result

mammynowanauntyIRL · 16/07/2018 19:00

Pastry sounds interesting
I'm getting hormonal headaches now lately too.

My df gave me money for myself & dc to enjoy our holidays, I was going to be taking some out of my Christmas club money so don't need to now Grin

Paid €120 against big cc today, deleted direct debit & then couldn't set up standing order so will ring them to do that tomo, and hopefully avoid late payment fee.

Going to buy chippy tea I think
Yesterday I spent €50 in Aldi on school bits and snacks, one pair of shoes will be returned.

Yesterday €6 on 2 ponchos, €6.50 on chips and bottle of water, €25 on diesel, 6 pk of water & sweets. My friend bought pizza and a drink for me as I drove.

Sammy900 · 16/07/2018 19:05

Hello Fugaleers

Can I join in please? I am new to being so sensible but I think I have turned a corner recently following a mid-life crisis - the fact that I can't get my work pension until I'm 67 and a crazily long-term on my mortgage has shook me up a bit and making the most of my money has now become my new obsession......

So far I have a plan and have started some of it:

-Opened a lifetime ISA (to hopefully save into for the next 11 years so I have the option of retiring at 60 if I want it)

-Am overpaying on mortgage by 300 each month -current interest rate is 2.2%

-Opened a regular saver to put in at least 100 / max 250 a month and then at the end of the year (can't touch it for a year) I'll either put it in an account for 5 yrs fixed rate bonds (2.6% interest) or maybe premium bonds I can't decide yet.

-Opened a regular saver stocks and shares ISA - of just £25 a month - this is a bit experimental as I don't really know what I'm doing with this yet.

-Have been looking into matched betting and have opened a separate bank account in-case I decide to give it a go - hmmm not sure yet

-I already have a costco account so I just need to top that up and buy tins/cupboard foods/wash powder etc in bulk and store it

-Have put aside a VERY tight budget of 200 (100 every two weeks) a month for other fresh groceries - stop ordering take aways every week (family of 4 two adults 2 D/C under 5)

-Am going to start riding my bike to work and back (no excuse really) and taking home cooked food in (literally I was spending nearly 40 quid a day at the canteen and taxi's etc TUT)

-In terms of debt I really need to work on getting my overdraft down and not maxing out every month (hard) but have set my goals high in terms of saving so will have to be strict. I am kind of looking forward to it. My O/H and I are usually so frivolous with money just blasting 90 quid here and there on nothingness from the co op etc - this has to change....

Hoping to get some great tips from this thread :)

SunnyLikeThursday · 16/07/2018 19:11

Girlie yes I know just what you mean about food stuff. I think you're very sensible to be guided by your consultant. It's probably nothing to do with wheat or dairy.

I'm trying to sort out our house and garden on a budget, partly as a way to keep ds busy in the holidays, and especially to keep him off the computer. We cleared out the greenhouse today and planted some seeds, so that's going to bring some fun along hopefully. Pumpkins are always our main thing.

Welcome Sammy.

Welcome Sammy.

NSD. We just had some rain. Just a little bit. First time in weeks! Hoping for a good thunder storm later, it's been forecast.

My periods have got really heavy too. It's hard at work because I can only get to the loo at break or lunch time. It's too far from my classroom to even nip out between lessons. I might see about going on the pill but it didn't agree with me last time I tried.

Thanks for replying to my pm btw Sea.

Hope you are feeling OK today Cag. Moving house is one of the most stressful things you can do so hopefully things will start to settle down soon.

LonelyOversharer · 16/07/2018 20:09

snuggly have you looked into the mirena coil? If you can take the pill without going batty (I can just about), it could be an option. Lasts 4+ years, and basically stops periods.

I have to pop to my storage unit to get something thats sold on ebay, so will probably spend a few quid in sainsburys as well. But a lsd here (not counting 3 credit card payments).

A good day at work, not in the office anymore (yay!) but covering the paint department as the proper girl (she's probably 15yrs younger than me, so a girl!) is on holiday. Much more up my street, the day flew by.

Hello to new frugaleers, welcome. We're very chatty, but you'll get used to us.

mammynowanauntyIRL · 16/07/2018 20:11

Funny the way the conversation goes on this thread in line with what I'm pondering!
Have gynae appointment on Wednesday and I'll find out about possible early menopause then & one of my questions is going to be contraception!

I've spent €20 on sweets, chippy tea and butter for at home. Now we're at free entertainment in nearby holiday resort, I'm debating crepes Shock

mammynowanauntyIRL · 16/07/2018 20:13

Sensible head on now, dc had Aldi pancakes & Nutella earlier today so we won't be buying anything here, if I still want them I can make an entire batch for about a €1 instead of €6 for three.

lifelongfrugaleer · 16/07/2018 20:40

Yes you can mammy. Step away from the crepe counter

Wolfcub · 16/07/2018 20:45

Evening all. Teva sandals arrived and have gone straight back. Clearly not designed for my feet at all. The likelihood is I won’t now have time to buy walking sandals pre hols. Will get full refund.
Up ridiculously early for the weekly London slog tomorrow. Life I hope your journey down is ok. Work is absolutely manic this week and things are kicking off all over the place. It is not the wind down I would have liked pre hols!

girlie I just wrap mine up and pop them in a net bag. Dh knows not to touch said net bag. Also in net bag go my cheeky wipes (used to remove make up and also to wash ds with in the bath), and small trainer socks, All get washed together. So far so good.

I used to get period related headaches. When I was on my break week of my pill (cilest) but I just need to drink more water. And bizarrely while I’m on I can’t stomach cheese. Ick.

Spends today:

£13 M&S on fruit (7 bananas, punnet of strawberries, blueberries, grapes (red ones), apples and nectarines). I’m pissed off a little because I took my wicker basket with me today and had planned on going to the market to buy fruit. Turns out Monday is not a good day to buy fruit from the market. It looked horrible. So while I wanted plastic free fruit, I ended up buying plastic wrapped stuff from M&S because it looked much nicer).

£3.20 on a wrap for lunch. Piri piri chicken, cheese, onion on a spinach wrap toasted. Mmmmmmm.

Also bought some poop bags for catfaces litter box, and some pens for work. Work supply rubbish pens. I prefer the uniball pens. So buy my own. I have asked that they reimburse me. Doubtful.

SnugglySnerd · 16/07/2018 21:12

I had thought about it Lonely the the pill didn’t suit me very well so I'd worry about the hormones. Plus I had enough of people rummaging about down there when I was pregnant!

Cagliostro · 16/07/2018 21:13

Life is too short for bad pens.

WreckTangled · 16/07/2018 21:17

I have to buy my own pens too (and stickers!) the nhs only provide those awful biros. We also have a ban on post it notes!

lifelongfrugaleer · 16/07/2018 21:21

We had horrible scratching pens at work. Then I found a box of nice pens in the stationary cupboard. Get in, made my day.
