WreckTangled · 04/03/2018 13:34

I've got butternut squash, carrot and onion roasting in the oven for my lunch next week. It'll be soup in a bit...then I'll make some cookies and by the time I've done that it'll probably be time to start dinner. Chilli tonight.

Dh is doing some kind of painting prep. I don't really understand, if it was me I just would have painted it all and been done with it all but he's been filling and sanding and now doing something to the wood Confused reckons he won't actually start painting for ages

Girliefriendlikesflowers · 04/03/2018 13:50

We’ve been planning some things to do with moving house. How the heck does anyone actually afford moving? We will be saving about £300 a month on rent I think, so that will help hugely of course. But I’m thinking the money we have saved (£1k plus mum said she is giving us £600 💕) won’t actually go that far, considering we will need a fridge freezer (current one has to stay here), beds for the Caglets and possibly a cot if we don’t have one by then, all clothes storage, curtains, rugs (all carpet is removed from council housing before new tenants, so depends how usable the wood underneath is)... plus there will be a rent overlap so an extra £900 spent there.

That said, the overlap will be helpful in that it gives us longer to move our stuff over. Given that we have to give a month’s notice we will have 1-2 months I suppose depending on when we are offered the new place. It would be good to use this to our advantage, get everything ready before we actually move. Wondering if we can actually avoid getting a removal van altogether - we don’t have much big furniture to take with us, will be getting any new furniture delivered to new house along with fridge. Maybe a man with a van (same we used to get rid of all that stuff recently) would suffice.

We did a bit of planning together this morning, trying to work out what order we would need to pay for stuff in, what takes priority etc. Furniture will be ikea and British heart foundation, does anyone have any tips on how to tell what second hand stuff is good quality?

It seems we are in the tenant deposit protection scheme but I’m not really sure what that means, is it a total guarantee we will get all of it back? A lot will need replacing when we move, but it’s fairly reasonable wear and tear for 10 years living here. We had a total nightmare with the landlords of our flat, who used a dodgy handyman for everything and stung us for the damage he did. We didn’t get a penny of our deposit back so much as these landlords are nicer (if we ignore the whole you don’t need heating thing 🙄) I’m reluctant to rely on getting any of that £1k or so back.

WreckTangled · 04/03/2018 14:12

Yes cag they would really have to prove what damage you did in order for them to keep the deposit. They don't even have it themselves it's held by the third party you should be fine. We ended up getting carpets and sticking them on a credit card and paying it off. It's so expensive moving.

Fluffycloudland77 · 04/03/2018 14:27

We did man with van.

After 10 years it’s surely reasonable that the house will need new carpets etc and a lick of paint unless they used really good quality stuff, which I doubt. You haven’t got pets and that helps enormously. 90% of my housework is of cat derivative. He came in earlier with actual shit on all four paws and walked over the dining table and the windowsill before I caught him.

I only realised it was poo when I was wiping him with a wet e cloth.

Wolfcub · 04/03/2018 14:34

Shopping order put in for next Thursday and meal plan done for the following week. Everyone had leftover something or other for lunch and there’s a chicken casserole in the slow cooker for dinner. Looks like we might manage some leftovers from that if we’re not greedy.

Cagliostro · 04/03/2018 14:49

It’s lucky pets are cute really when they pull stunts like that :o

No, they definitely didn’t use quality stuff. In fact they told us they did absolutely nothing to the place when they bought it, it’s still trade paint and trade carpet (not sure if that’s the right term, but it’s the thin grey stuff from when it’s first built) - we weren’t even the first people to move in either so it’s all been here at least 12 years. They did get the living room and halls painted for us, that’s chipped now but when the LL visited he said he could see the decorator he hired hadn’t used the right paint, so not worried about that at least.

I do have the original inventory so we will get as much as we can perfect before we leave anyway.

Thank you for the advice, thinking out loud here and it’s very useful, I am panicking somewhat about how much there is to do! I am so glad we will be moving but if I’m honest it’s stressing me out not knowing when it will happen. At least we have a few months or so.

When I think back to when we moved here I can’t believe how much less STUFF we had. But that was two babies ago. DD1 was 5 days off her first birthday, and her toys fit in a small basket. 😂

ememem84 · 04/03/2018 15:00

I am on load of washing number 6.

I have packed up the unnecessary kitchen bits. Filled two wardrobe boxes with clothes and coats. And have whittled ds’ clothes down to be things what fit. The rest is being bagged up, taken to dms this evening and I will eBay once we move. House is a mess. But we’re getting there.

As someone who has moved three times since 2013, I can confirm moving is very expensive it always costs more than you would think, Cag. Em, when are you planning to move? You sound very organised!

Moanranger · 04/03/2018 15:24

AuditSo sorry to hear about your mum. RIPFlowers
Cag Do you have St Wilfred’s second hand shop near you? They are brill for good quality second hand furniture. I always check them out first before I resort to Ikea.
Main shopping today at local cheap place £31, and £3.99 for kindling, a bag of which will last into next year. I will need petrol in car soon, though. Got a replacement lodger - yay! So worries are off.
