wolf yes, electric waffle thingy. I actually have 3 Blush, a fancy pants one from amazon, it's going in the skip it's that good, one that makes waffle cones, but the one I use all the time was £16.99 in Lidl, and has 3 sets of plates (I just make waffles though). So, cheap and cheerful is just fine, especially if you won't use it all the time.

I lift all my recipies off pintrest, but have tweaked my waffle recipie until it works just right, every time.

Today...pick up big car (dp and I both paying £100 and will settle the rest at the end of the month somehow) and then I'll take the little car on into town for my glasses. I'm thinking of making the chickens an impromptu coop somewhere else in the garden as they are knee deep in sqoosh and mud. Just a frame with netting over, so might do a recon mission to b&q to look at plastic pipe.

My three thing from yesterday
Finding that my parents were so much better and less depressed about being old than they were last time i saw them
Beautiful drive through the New Forest inthe sun
Lovely conversation with Dh about our future plans -a real feeling of enthusiasm for our joint ' life project 'and us both wanting the same things

Laska5772 · 12/02/2018 09:12

But, poo, I am back in office this morning...

Loveabaconsandwich · 12/02/2018 09:13

Grateful for:

  1. it being half term so no school run
  2. DD1 trying to speak French. She sounds like delboy trying to speak French
  3. Ocado arrived earlier than expected with milk for my tea Smile

Off to Pizza Hut for lunch today as a half term treat. I have a gift card.

Hoping to get my job offer in writing today as I want to resign today/tomorrow as I think it will stop me from having to do an extra week.

QuiteCleanBandit · 12/02/2018 09:15

Lonely
Could you do concrete slab base and then use something like Dengie/ Aubiose ?
Keeps them nice and dry and they love the Dengie.
How did you manage the restrictions last year ? Mine had the above set up and it worked well and was eady to clean.
Dengie lasts ages as its vacuum packed.
My 3 things:
Happy, funny chooks-fresh egg for my breakfast
Its sunny😎
Chai

Morning All.
need that's lovely to hear about your friend, I remember you talking about it. I love entertaining but we've got out of the habit lately.
Good luck to all those doing job applications.
girlie glad dd's party went well
Seacow belated birthday wishes and hope you're feeling better
lonely the waffles look fab & yes what a difference it makes when your kitchen is tidier & less cluttered.

So, ds has made it to Tobago, woohoo!! We dropped him off at the airport yesterday morning after a slight panic when the M6 was shut & we didn't move for 20 minutes. Anyway we made it and he arrived at around 10 GMT last night. Their first match is today so I imagine there will be some heavy legs.
We are in Devon with the pil for a couple of days. We stopped off with friends for lunch on the way down in Somerset which was a lovely catch up.
Eating out tonight but fil is paying so shouldn't be a spendy day

Cagliostro · 12/02/2018 11:55

£43 using the rest of my gift card from Christmas. Board game for me, uni book for DSD, couple of bits for activities at the World Book Day party (that’ll be covered by ticket costs though)

Still need to place my Asda order. And need to go get lunch things as we have a very empty kitchen

Cagliostro · 12/02/2018 11:56

Yay north so pleased he has been able to go!

WreckTangled · 12/02/2018 13:49

Today we have made some cakes and done some painting.

I need to pick up prescription as have run out of pills but it's out of the way and I'm
Going that way tomorrow. Don't want to waste petrol so will just have to wait.

TheDuchessofDukeStreet · 12/02/2018 14:21

Checking in. These threads are helping me so much, am grateful for them and you nice frugaleers. Have been making a game plan to try for future shopping.

I have made a list of things I would like to keep buying from Sainsburies, Tesco etc. Largely these seem to be fairly inexpensive things e.g. Sainsburies no sugar blackcurrent squash that I like, small tins of baked beans/ peas that DP eats and I don't . We are guilty of buying individually packaged things like these but I take the attitude that it's not economical if we waste half a bigger tin. I'd rather get smaller tins and see it eaten up, and you can't get these in Aldi/Lidl. Most of these fall into the category of a monthly shop and I buy the supermarket own brand anyway.

Things like bread, butter, cold meat, cheese , milk, meat etc I don't really have a preference so will try to get these from a less expensive shop, Aldi is the most convenient, and perfectly nice. I don't like the aisle in the centre and avoid it.

Local farm shop for potatoes, veg, the best sausages. And a stroke of the farm cat who had a bed next to the till. Joints of beef better than the supermarket.

We have a Costco membership and go about once a month. Household essentials like loo roll, washing powder, bin bags etc. Big packs of chicken gougons that I divide into smaller bags for the freezer. Costco is fine as long as I add up what I spend as I go through the shop. What is least necessary can wait for next time. Costco can be a bit dangerous for impulse purchases, you just have to be careful.

Top up shops, I'm really guilty of. I was talking to a colleague at work who turned out to be a neighbour too using the same small Tesco local to me . She made the comment that if you really need to top up anything it's best to use a smaller shop as its less interesting and takes less time than a big supermarket where you can get lost in other departments and there are a lot more opportunities for impulse spending.

So I'm going to aim for a monthly shop at a bigger supermarket and at Costco, and get my weekly things at Aldi. Top ups if really needed at local shop. I want to get the best value for money, gets nice food we will eat and not waste. While I enjoy food shopping and planning, it takes over. The more organised I am, the more time I will have to play at the seaside, national trust, nice walks with DP , reading, swimming. I don't want life just to be work, the supermarket and chores.

Rather a long post. I'm feeling things falling into place, and if I post things here I'm more likely to action them, and I can also refer back to keep me motivated. Hope all frugaleers are having a good Monday.

Fluffycloudland77 · 12/02/2018 14:30

I've never been a fan of the centre aisle either. It's a husband entertainment area in my mind. Like a crèche but no ball pit.

You can freeze baked beans. Only Dh eats them here so I get the Aldi multipack and freeze the leftover half tins in freezer/food bags from wilkos.

LonelyOversharer · 12/02/2018 14:39

quiteclean we had birdflu just 6 miles from us. It was a bit scary, but my chucks are ok as completely enclosed with netting. Yes, once they are on holiday out of muddy mudsville I'm going to make it half concrete base, half soil base (the bit under a huge tree so never gets swampy). They have a small garden size area as we used to have a much bigger flock. Dp wants light Sussex now, will look for some pol girls in the spring.

Glasses collected, £29 in Debenhams, some of that was for nephews birthdays next month, some for a toy for dd3, who was with me and being her sweet self (not the moody tween who's been with us lately). Then £45 in tescos, very little of this was food, £24 was dog food and dishwasher tablets. Was showing dd3 how to work out value using £/g on the labels.

Oh, and £122 on the car, we paid half now, half later (they know us v well).

Moanranger · 12/02/2018 14:40

Duchess you sound like you have a good plan. The point is, I think, to only pay premium prices where there is evident extra value. I did a porridge taste test recently, and it was impossible to tell the cheapest from the most expensive. On the other hand, cheap meat is minging! (I’m looking at you, Tesco.
This thread has been a godsend for me, lots of good ideas and daily reporting keeps me on the straight and narrow.
LSD £10 in cheap local shop, tuna, tomatoes, spinach.
Bombshell, tho. My tenant gave notice today, so will have to replace. This will happen ( hassle) but means no rent coming in this month as he paid 1 month in advance Sad I need some good news, for a change.
Grateful for: Sun is shining, children are well & “launched”, I have a roof over my head.

QuiteCleanBandit · 12/02/2018 14:41

Absolutely a husband entertainment area Grin
The aisle of "no" as they rock up with a generator when you have popped in for yoghurt Grin

TheDuchessofDukeStreet · 12/02/2018 15:02

Fluffy and Bandit, you're so right, it is a husband crèche!

Fluffy it's good to know you can freeze baked beans. I don't have freezer space for this at present but noted for future reference.

Moanranger, you have summed up in a sentence what I tried to say in several paragraphs!

ememem84 · 12/02/2018 15:58

I would never have thought to freeze baked beans.

I tend to just decant half a tin into a Tupperware fridge and forget...

Cagliostro · 12/02/2018 16:23

£16.60 Sainsbury’s (on what?! Not much) and a nice chat about home ed with the checkout lady 😊 I did get easy stuff for dinner, I feel really wobbly today so fuck it (oh so that’s why it was expensive...)

Got home in time for parcel delivery... @ChristmasSeacow OMG thank you so much, cuteness overload!!! 😍💐

lifelongfrugaleer · 12/02/2018 17:00

I'm the same dutchess. Small tins as silly large ones go to waste. Slightly more £per g but worth it for less waste. Ditto sainsbury squash. It's the only one I like.

£35 decathlon, £9 ice-skating, £32 Asda living, £6 15 boots.
Pleased DS got away to Tobago.

I didn't know about freezing beans. I'm not going to though.

Taytocrisps · 12/02/2018 17:00

It's the first day of half-term so I brought DD shopping. She wanted to get some school supplies and some leggings in Penneys. I managed to steer her out of the Harry Potter section of Penneys despite her best efforts to persuade me to buy her a Hufflepuff fleecy blanket Grin.

We spent €17.45 on paninis and coffee/orange juice in our favourite cafe. They do the best paninis. I always get the tuna melt and DD gets the chicken tikka.

We treated ourselves to free sprays of perfume in the perfume section of a department store. DD inadvertently sprayed herself with a posh room spray!

Things to be grateful for:

(1) No school so a little lie on
(2) Tuna melt paninis
(3) Easy dinner today - I have leftover meat from yesterday so I just have to cook some baby potatoes and heat up some sweetcorn.

Laska glad your parents are in a more positive frame of mind

north how long will DS be away?

Taytocrisps · 12/02/2018 17:14

mammy the second part of that 'We won the Lotto' programme is on tonight if you're interested - RTE One at 9.35.

SunnyLikeThursday · 12/02/2018 17:20

I reckon that half an open tin of beans, frozen, could probably get a central spot in the Tate Gallery.

Fluffycloudland77 · 12/02/2018 17:21

North I hope he has a wonderful time, the sunshine will do him the world of good after an illness if nothing else. I bet the foods amazing. Devon Envy

Moan Hopefully you will find another.

55p beef liver for pate.
£20 cattery deposit.

www.hotukdeals.com/deals/free-co-op-fairtrade-resource-pack-includes-5-food-voucher-co-op-co-op-members-2893126

Just ordered this. I had one last year.

ChristmasSeacow · 12/02/2018 18:26

Got a bit behind again....

Thanks for the birthday wishes. It was a bit pants tbh, what with feeling grotty, and I was a little disappointed with DH for not making any effort st all (I know, I know, iabu...). I wasn’t after diamonds or fancy handbags but just for him to put some thought into it, or even breakfast in bed, would have been nice. He’s a good chap but totally lacking in imagination. Anyway, it turned out okay because I did a little craft project with DS. Not a big deal to most people but he literally never does anything like that or shows any joint attention, so I was thrilled. And I really enjoyed spending the quality time with him. Got fish n chips for dinner, was £26 with delivery and tip Shock. London, innit.

Yesterday was NSD as my lovely sisters took me out for brunch. That was a nice day actually, much better than Saturday. Still felt a bit rough but it’s a cold not flu so I’ll live! Dd is leaving snail trails on the shoulders of all my cardigans though Envy (

LonelyOversharer · 12/02/2018 19:03

I hope your cold clears quickly seacow. I had the cold too (not flu) and it hung around for flipping weeks. Ds and dd3 are croaky, ds is all viral blotchy (don't think its chicken pox...) on his face. He might also be teething. I know he's nearly 6, but has had no top front teeth for 3 years. His gums are bulging.

I should buy small tins of beans, we always have a few left over. I just put them in the "chicken bucket" ie: tit bits for tomorrow. They get all food scraps bar chicken, onions and citrus. Tuna mayo baked tatties for tea. Used 4 tins. Honestly the amount my lot eat. Ds had a turkey dinosaur and 'frozen noodles' thats supernoodles, strangely.

This thread has made me so mindful of what I buy, and lately, how often I buy it. It's been 11 days since my epic shop, spent about £20 on food since then, and we are just starting to run out of things (last of the mayo and tomatoes just used tonight), so my 3x weekly supermarket full trolleys was just a bit much!
