Beef (oxtail) rendang) was fab!.

Have I told you about 'hay box' cooking?. its an old method where they used to heat up a joint of meat , then put it in a box lined with hay seal it and leave it to cook in residual heat for a day .. V v frugal , non?

So ive been doing this at home (for some time now actually) . either with slow cooker or yesterday with stove top casserole pot.

It was oxtail and cheapest stewing steak , so needed a lot of cooking. . I prepped all ingredients and put on low heat for a an hour or so it was on a good rolling simmer and hot all the way through . At bed time I took it off the stove and wrapped the pan in 4 layers of old beach towels and left it on the kitchen worktop over night. This morning I unwrapped it . meat was was cooked and tender and still warm , but i heated it up again quickly then left it wrapped up again back on worktop ..

I came home to a lush oxtail curry. which just needed a slight warm through.. and hardly any energy used ..

Ive done this with all meat (inc chicken.. you just need to make sure you get it up to hot temp for about 20 mins to ensure any possible bugs have had it ) .even since kids small and weve all survived!

Laska5772 · 22/09/2017 19:52

CollieBobs · 22/09/2017 19:55

ememem84 · 22/09/2017 20:31

No idea laksa I just googled "moose trousers"

Laska5772 · 22/09/2017 20:34

BTW! no Hay needed in my take on 'hay box' method ! Ive always used towels..

Fluffycloudland77 · 22/09/2017 20:35

Weekends are bad for surveys. Loaf of whole meal bread baked. Smells lovely.

Cagliostro · 22/09/2017 21:05

Crikey just caught up with you chatty bunch at last!

Welcome fuzzy and yay for interview collie!

Currently trying to work out what to have for dinner. CBA to do anything and not up to cooking at all. But need to eat and then test (will have to set an alarm - I was dozing off before test time last night!). On the plus side my levels are still on the low (but ok) side after meals so either I'm massively overestimating how much carbs I'm eating (TBH when I've had mash or something I barely manage any before I'm full) or my insulin response is actually ok?! I don't really understand it TBH. But my GTT was only 0.3 over the threshold for monitoring so maybe that means the GD is mild, or something Consultant on October 2nd so will review then. And if I can avoid medication and early induction then that's awesome. But they have said that even if I stay diet controlled they will induce at due date anyway, so I won't go overdue! Yay! Although aaaargh at that being less than 8 weeks away.

Been a mad busy couple of weeks, I am beyond tired and I am absolutely fucking ecstatic not to have anything booked for the next three days!!!

FuzzyCustard · 22/09/2017 21:12

Love those moose trousers laska. But why are they called "moose"? (I've heard of moleskin, is this a chunkier version?)

My best bargain this week was a free bodyboard when I bought some birthday presents and a furry lined hoodie for me in Saltrock's sale.

lifelongfrugaleer · 22/09/2017 21:27

Fingers crossed Collie
Fab ginger people
Oh no girlie that sounds rubbish
Love the trouser. Will be going to sainsbury this weekend

FuzzyCustard · 22/09/2017 21:30

Interview vibes for Collie and MrLaska. Hope it all comes good for you both.

SunnyLikeThursday · 22/09/2017 21:35

Em That sounds very promising if that's what runs in your family.

We just went on an epic Beaver hike in the dark. Its was nearly two miles long and we were meant to be reading a map but the map had almost no detail. Fortunately our leader knew the route and had not delegated running the group for the entire evening to me, as he suggested last night at the last minute. Phew! It's weird how many kids are sent to Beavers hungry and thirsty. Why do the parents not feed them?

PinkLemonadeforme · 22/09/2017 21:52

Blimey you are so chatty! Grin

Have been busy with work and finally a small house project is finished.
All the stuff piled in the house has been moved-bliss!
Anyone else feel if they dont insist on stuff being done their OH would just not push anything forward ?Angry
Drives me nuts and now its all "oh its so great" , Grrrrr
I got similar, almost identical trousers in Asda -have lots of colours and wash brilliantly.
Have had a few NSD but alsogot a few Christmas bits

ememem84 · 22/09/2017 22:29

sunny I'm really hoping that it works out like that. Dh was 2 weeks late apparently.

Every twinge today I've been thinking "oooh maybe this is it" it wasn't

In bed now. Yay!

SunnyLikeThursday · 22/09/2017 22:50

Yeah I remember that feeling. The waiting is weird isn't it? Listening to you talking about it really takes me back to those weird few days.

mammymammyIRL · 22/09/2017 23:37

ememem84 · 23/09/2017 07:08

Morning y'all.

Should be nsd today. We need to put the cot together. Dh needs to pop to the post office. And I'm mostly going to be supervising things along with catface.

Woken up to washing up noises (that's either catface or dh) and bacon smells.

Fluffycloudland77 · 23/09/2017 07:12

I'm going to have to make lentil soup for breakfast, the shopping doesn't arrive until 2pm.

It's not my ideal breakfast.

WreckTangled · 23/09/2017 07:15

I want bacon.

We haven't got any food at all until I go shopping. Not sure when I'm going to be able to do it ds has football at 9:30 hopefully he will join in this week hall be £15 for the term. Dd has spilt hot chocolate on the blanket so that's another thing to add to my massive pile of washing Hmm

Fluffycloudland77 · 23/09/2017 07:18

Pink Yep, same here.

Found butter in the freezer so I didn't forget it after all.

£25 Amazon last night, huge bottles of deep conditioner & shampoo & some vitamins for Dh.

lifelongfrugaleer · 23/09/2017 07:19

I've got bacon for breakfast, then the gym (back to self care), Aldi and sainsbury. Will be spendy.
There is a festival of thrift on this weekend nearby. I went to the first year and it was a bit rubbishes. Dh is on a stall so will go this afternoon £5 to park like. Hope that's waived for workers.

lifelongfrugaleer · 23/09/2017 07:20

Pink, yip stuff doesn't get done unless I do it or nag.

mammymammyIRL · 23/09/2017 07:35

Forgot my spends on makeup last night €16.50 on a lipgloss & mascara.
My makeup dries up rather than runs out because I wear so little Smile

mammymammyIRL · 23/09/2017 07:42

Will venture to Aldi for last few bits tomo.

Fluffy that's definitely an unusual breakfast Smile

ememem84 · 23/09/2017 07:55
