Oh that's really interesting Rafa re the Mediterranean diet. Great clarification there. Like I say, I'm not low carb, but eating as clean as I ever have. And a diet roughly resembling a Med one seems the best description, with as much whole grain as I need, where relevant.

For a diabetic, would getting carbs from more complex sources still be better than fast food or refined sugar, or are carbs carbs in this scenario? I know so little in this regard, sorry if this a numpty question.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 14/09/2017 11:47

Yes. But I'm not an expert. I think complex carbs is the basis of the glycaemic load stuff isn't it. Although if you are hypo then you just need sugar as quickly as possible.

A lot probably also depends on the type of diabetes you have. I don't know a lot about gestational diabetes tbh.

I do wonder how many of the people currently advocating the low carb med are also restricting red meat, dairy and saturated fats.

ememem84 · 14/09/2017 11:55

I know someone who is low carbing and no sugaring. She's mental. Essentially only eating chicken and fish and eggs. Eugh. No veg or fruit as it has sugars. No "traditional" carbs (bread pasta rice etc) all so she can drop 5lbs before a holiday. Madness. And she's boring about it. Can't have xyz because of sugars carbs etc. I'm just about ready to shove a biscuit in her gob.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 14/09/2017 12:12

Grin em.

Some people do seem to get evangelical and think you need to know every time they eat (or don't eat). Worse is when they start on what you're eating.

If I was snorting a line of coke at work they might have a point. Eating a banana, not so much.

ememem84 · 14/09/2017 12:15

I've just been told not to eat pineapple as it induces labour. Some enzyme in it apparently (bromaline?). As I was tucking into a small pot of pineapple grapes and strawbs.

I pointed out that for it to induce labour I'd have to eat 10 times my body weight in pineapple. Following which id probably have more problems than going into labour...

ememem84 · 14/09/2017 12:26

Air display is revving up. Can hear the planes whizzing about overhead. Having a bit of a practice.

I may pop up to the roof later to see if I can see them. It'll be a noisy afternoon.

We're allowed a half day for air display or for our carnival/parade in August. I took carnival day as figured having a half day the day before my last day probably wasn't useful.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 14/09/2017 12:50

I miss getting the day off school the air display.

needastrongone · 14/09/2017 13:08

Grin@ Em.

I'm a member of a few FB sites about HFLC sport, the narrowness of their diets astonishes me. And their refusal to take in carbs, even on seriously long runs (I'm talking 20/30 miles etc). I'm all for training the body to use fat as it's primary energy source and not eating a pile of processed crap but to it seems quite extreme. Sticking to a principle at the expense of performance and possibly health.

A banana would definitely blow their mind Rafa. Grin

needastrongone · 14/09/2017 13:10

That said, I've just had mushroom omelette and avocado for lunch, but did have a lovely juicy nectarine too!

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 14/09/2017 13:15

I love an omelette for lunch. And avocado tbh.

Chucked a whole load of random veg I had left over in a frittata the other night. It was lush.

ememem84 · 14/09/2017 13:52

rafa I forgot you were an islander for a time!

£3.40 on a tuna melt. Mmm. Met lovely friend who gave me a book "french children don't throw food - parenting secrets from Paris" useful.

Have started saying "see you later" to colleagues. Some who aren't in tomorrow. 😭

Bets are being taken as to how many times I'm going to cry tomorrow. I am going to channel my inner ice queen and not cry

WreckTangled · 14/09/2017 14:02

Need with regards to insulin production it's all the same although obviously the levels of sugar in the blood will peak at different times. Slow and stead for complex carbs and fast and high for sugary things. Obviously the former is better in any scenario.

I went to John Lewis for lunch with a friend Blush don't tell my boss. It was between visits and was lovely. Soup and a cake £7.

Em is the book good? I always wonder if there are useful things to know from French culture. I spent some of my childhood there but in a British school so I learned only little bits from tv and being out and about.

Cagliostro · 14/09/2017 15:30

Well, shagging is supposed to get labour started too em and nobody's ever said to me that's not a good idea 😂😂😂 I'm sure a bit of pineapple won't hurt 😜

Enjoying, and very grateful for, all the low carb talk! Am a bit confused as the diabetic nurse said reduce rather than cut down drastically - she was saying if your numbers are a bit high, consider one slice instead of two for a sandwich, etc. TBH though it's not going to do me any harm to avoid white pasta, bread etc is it.

As for the idea of not eating VEG because of the sugar. Fuck off! 😱😱 I will struggle enough to give up the sugary crap as it is (there's a reason I'm the size I am, before baby I mean) but if I couldn't have lovely veggies either... yeah I'll join you in the biscuit-shoving-in-gob queue :o

Anyway I now have a rather fancy blood sugar checking thing and a letter to give to the GP for prescription test strips and needles. And a chart which I'm going to do alongside a food diary (the latter isn't compulsory but I thought it'd be interesting).

WreckTangled · 14/09/2017 15:40

Cag NICE guidelines have yet to catch up with the no carbs. I also think that they like to give people realistic goals and for a lot of people reducing is easier than removing.

ememem84 · 14/09/2017 16:17

Oh cag food diarys. Mine is appalling at present. I was asked to be part of a Diet and lifestyle study during pregnancy. So have had to keep a diary it's really helped me see where I'm going wrong - ie a 330pm snack is usually chocolate or a biscuit or something sugary. When maybe it should be fruit....

Imnalso using my fitness pal to log food at present. And will continue to do so after baby arrives. Not for weight loss but just to see where how I'm doing.

sunny haven't really looked at the book yet but it promises to divulge the secrets of how and why french kids are capable of enjoying dinners out, are well behaved etc.

I think personally it's maybe kids are expected to be able to behave. And maybe it's more acceptable to eat out with kids in France etc.

I've definetly noticed the lack of "kids menus/areas" in french places though. And personally I think it's a good thing. Everywhere I've eaten in France seems willing to make "something" for kids - dsis is/was the fussiest of eaters. But even she managed without chicken nuggets chips and beans.

We've stayed with friends at my parents place previously (when we were kids) and went out for dinner. The friends kids are nothing but were promised a McDonald's after we'd all eaten. My sister and I sat happily picking at a fruits des mer, then jambon ouef frites (friends parents didn't trust the "real" ham we were served - as in came from an actual pig leg not a packet and didn't like "french" food). I remember thinking at the time they were crazy.

Cagliostro · 14/09/2017 16:33

Very true! I know cutting out completely is impossible anyway. But I think for me having a smaller portion of pasta would still be leading to cravings etc. I am terrible with sugar crashes making me reach for more sugary stuff! Was a lot worse when I had fizzy drinks more often though.

Aaaargh such a minefield! Ah well at least I am seeing the specialist on Monday (she squeezed me in at the end of clinic, I think given how far along I am she's in a hurry to get things sorted). I'll just have to see how things go.

These tests are hard! Both times (we all had to practice in the group meeting) I had to do it twice as didn't get enough blood. Just now my second attempt got an error message, I may have to use a deeper needle thingy. I am glad the needles and strips are free as I may be redoing this a lot! 😳😳

I was so proud of DS today though as he just sat quietly and looked at a maze book for the whole meeting and even the nurse said how beautifully behaved he was :o ⭐️

Really interesting about the Mediterranean diet. That's always been the sort of cuisine I felt I would most like to live on!

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 14/09/2017 16:36

That makes me laugh, em. My mum always says she wished we'd just eat off the kids menu cos it was cheaper. Instead they'd take us out and we'd order a plate of moules frites. UK waiters always seemed a bit surprised when we were over here.

Cagliostro · 14/09/2017 16:39

I find the cultural differences fascinating. It comes up a lot on MN lately (threads about children using iPads in restaurants etc). I do wonder sometimes if making things so child friendly is not so friendly at all as it's doing them a disservice?! I like it when restaurants offer any half size portion at a lower price, gives them a much wider range of options.

WreckTangled · 14/09/2017 16:42

Cag where are you doing it? I do it in the top side of my finger. Make sure your fingers are warm and yes put it deeper. I suspect the error might have been not enough blood? You can just about see the mark on my finger there. I also never do my thumb or little finger and rarely my index finger it feels too weird 😂

Em the book sounds good. We have a Swedish parenting one & its brilliant. I cried so much on my last day. I didn't even realise I liked my colleagues until I left them for maternity leave. I wish I went back Sad

All this low carb, low sugar etc etc stuff is beyond me. I'm clueless! Blush

£3.20 on the bus today

Slow cooked chilli con carne for dinner

WreckTangled · 14/09/2017 16:52

Mmmm collie I saw someone eating chilli with a jacket potato today and it looked so good! It's going on my meal plan for next week

Fluffycloudland77 · 14/09/2017 17:45

£3.75 on bread, gravy powder & bread. I'm going to have a go at soda bread, v cheap apparently so that will bring the bread bill down & it will be more filling.
£10 petrol
£1 parcel paper.

I want chilli now Sad

yumyumpoppycat · 14/09/2017 17:53

soda bread is good and no need for a bread machine Fluffy! I need to use my bread machine Blush. Actually I also have a yoghurt flask thing and sachets and I made a batch up today rather than getting yog.
