Scots used to use blood to make porridge, there was a tool for tapping cow veins.

Poor cows though!.

I think animal herders did it, not your average man in the street.

CremeEggThief · 11/07/2017 16:50

Did they really, Fluffy?Shock

They used to put deer blood into Jagermeister and give it to the German soldiers going into battle in World War 1.

needastrongone · 11/07/2017 16:52

Scouting is such a great institution isn't it? It's done great by both my DC, but DS in particular.

I would say our diet is less healthy at competitions, and way less varied, out of necessity. We even buy the pots of porridge, albeit Aldi ones. It's all about convenience and ease.

Teen parties. Don't worry guys, not all DC want parties. DD has just turned 16 and had a bunch of friends round for a BBQ. They were all gone by 10pm and tidied up before they left Grin. DS hasn't had one but goes to a few. We've allowed the odd tin of cider, strictly no spirits, I know the rules are slacker for DS, who is nearly 18 after all.

Sounds like a busy weekend Meadow, glad you enjoyed it.

Aww how lovely that they all cleared up after the party :o that's fab.

First world holiday prob of the day: the fudge I bought isn't very nice

Cagliostro · 11/07/2017 17:48

Ohh yes meant to add meadow well done for getting your stuff done in town!

Wheelycote · 11/07/2017 18:34

Fluffy herders tapped cows veins to make porridgeShockShock

thewaitresses · 11/07/2017 18:50

Chilli and tortillas is our go-to Friday camping meal too snuggly! We're actually going this weekend as well sunny! I think if you're close enough to a supermarket then no need to over-prepare on the food front, just buy as you need it.

Food shop today £62. Spent another £8 on two books for Dd.

Felt very frugally virtuous that I conjured two dinners out of empty cupboards! Courgette and salmon risotto yesterday and courgette and split pea soup this evening. Dd hated the soup but I put my foot down about her having a good go at her portion. I used the 'some families are very poor and can't afford lovely vegetables to make soup' card Blush

MeadowHay · 11/07/2017 18:55

Well it's true waitresses! I love courgettes.

Just spent like £64ish on groceries online at Asda which will be arriving tomorrow night. Our food bills are so high because DH is tall and works a manual job so he eats loads!

SnugglySnerd · 11/07/2017 19:02

Sunny we've heated a pouch of microwave rice on a camping stove before. You could use it to make egg fried rice. Also fresh pasta cooks really quickly so we sometimes have that.

needastrongone · 11/07/2017 19:17

I'm thinking it's the gluten and exclusion aspects that might be tricky.

Eggs, food of champions!

I also did wonder about those protein shakes available, they are big in the running world. I don't use them but tons of folk at the club do.

needastrongone · 11/07/2017 19:18

Love courgettes too! I've planted too many....

OP posts:
needastrongone · 11/07/2017 19:21

We also use fresh pasta a lot, with a tub of tomato and mascarpone sauce. Not home made but hellish easy. Cooks in minutes so not much gas used.

Off to boot camp now.

Conta match was amazing, hard work, focus and dedication. So calm. Says she dreams big but prefers to spend her time putting the work in. I'm really sad cos I get really inspired by sports people Grin

Is your ds gluten free need?

£18 in sains. You can't use nectar points in stores you've not shopped in for a while so I couldn't use my points.

Cest la vie.

Highly recommend sains vintage cava when it's on offer. Very nice.

Wheelycote · 11/07/2017 19:41

Lsd 3.50 on food at dinner time

needastrongone · 11/07/2017 19:41

No, was thinking about sunny and some of the suggestions, its trickier in her case, very easy for me. I'm really lucky in that regard.

OP posts:
Fluffycloudland77 · 11/07/2017 19:47

Thought so, I've got two allergies to food & it's very limiting.

You can buy kits to check for allergies, people actually want something to be wrong Shock

As long as I can have wine eh?.

Wheely the cows lived to tell the tale. Times were bloody hard back then.

CremeEggThief · 11/07/2017 19:54

I didn't know that about Nectar points. So they only let you use them in a store you use regularly?Confused

Fluffycloudland77 · 11/07/2017 19:57

Yep exactly, tm I can use it for free wine. Probably buy jeggings though.

Unless you ring customer services in advance.

needastrongone · 11/07/2017 21:05

I'm still waiting for my Nectar card to come through, been saving my receipts. The whole scheme seems a bit 'clunky', but there again, the M&S Sparks card is just as bad.

I agree, I'm a bit agog too, it's like it's trendy to have an allergy. I bet if you really do have an allergy or intolerance, that's hard to understand.

Fluffy can you get a cheaper alternative to Pixie Glow Tonic please?

I think there was a programme about the making of the Sainburys cava, and how it's marketed, it's their Christmas bestseller if we are thinking of the same product.

Bootcamp was good, every time it got harder I thought of Jo Conta Grin

Red wine and a bath now.

Nip & fab pads, normal Glycolic not extreme. Always on offer, superdrug do some too that are buav approved 🐰

Taste the difference cava, the normal ones ok but this ones really good.

ChristmasSeacow · 11/07/2017 21:34

Yes, I had that problem in sainies last time I went to the double up event. It's an anti-fraud thing apparently, to stop stolen cards getting used in random stores. You can get around it by phoning customer services but it is a faff.

Not posting much because I often (literally) have my hands full. DD is very squidgy and cuddly though although she is also furious and noisy for much of her waking hours Grin I am trying to savour it as it all goes so quickly.

Need for D of E I'd go for dehydrated foods as much as possible. If water is available everywhere they go it doesn't make sense to carry food with the water already in it, iyswim. Food is supposed to be about 70%+ water so you save a lot of weight if you don't carry that component. I'd go for quorn spag bol (comes dehydrated), flavoured couscous, pasta/rice (ideally quick cook to save gas). And for meat, are there any vacuum packed things like frankfurters that don't need refrigerating? Good to avoid the weight of tins as much as possible. Also, what about those little tablets of flavouring that you can put into water to make squash? And chocolate, lots of chocolate. Nuts also good for energy dense slow release snacks.

We have had, and are having, a crazy busy week. There are transition events for DS for Reception, and I have a meeting with the school tomorrow. And appointments for DD (weight and hearing screening). As well as the usual nursery and pre school schedule for DS. So far I am spending a lot of time loading kids into the car and then unloading them. And we have a different friend visiting each of the next 4 days. And for some reason I said I would cook lunch on Saturday for friends Hmm. Not inspired but it will need to be something quick!

went to the GP today as I have a blocked ear. Getting it syringed next week. In the meantime I am driving DH mad as I can't hear the telly and have to keep asking him what is happening. We have paused the current series we are watching together until next week, in the interest of saving our marriage Wink. Also have conjunctivitis so red eye too. I am a real catch.

I sent very expensive flowers to my granny as she turned 90 yesterday. Supposed to be splitting the cost with my sisters but they never actually pay me for their theoretical shares of such things i am the oldest sister, soft touch

In impending spends, I have boxes and boxes of clothes and yet nothing to wear- I am heavier than I was last summer and most of my clothes are work clothes anyway and too smart for home slobbing. I could do with a few casual dresses or similar but don't really have the opportunity
or energy to shop. But literally desperate so will have to do the online thing and then faff with returns.

Right, have a mountain of laundry to put away and then I want to sleep for a couple of hours before DH brings DD up to me. She's sleeping only short stretches at night so the most sleep I get in one stretch is about 2 hours. Bit knackered but she is worth it!

Fluffycloudland77 · 11/07/2017 21:40

interest of saving our marriage

Sensible. divorce costs a fortune.

You poor thing having conjunctivitis & a blocked ear.

SunnyLikeThursday · 11/07/2017 21:53

I used to absolutely swear by chocolate PowerBars when I did a lot of transatlantic travel. For some reason they used be good enough to more or less replace a whole meal, if I was somewhere that there was nothing else going.

I had my first evening out without ds this evening, just from 5.30pm to 7.30pm. Ds stayed home with dh. Bit of a milestone that. 7 years, it's been, but no sense rushing it was there?

Coppersulphate · 11/07/2017 22:09

Blimey Sunny, hope you did something very grown up and enjoyed it.
Poor Seacow. Get better soon. Bet DD is gorgeous.
At last we have proper rain. I spent 2 hours today watering everything and filling a water butt from next door neighbour's hose pipe because he is not on a water meter and I am. Just as I was finished...literally putting the hose away...the heavans opened.

SunnyLikeThursday · 11/07/2017 22:17

We were planning a whole year of Beavers meetings. High living stuff. I did see a very big dog, which was pretty exciting.
