Had a really spendy day with food shopping and fuel. So much to catch up on...

Collie I really hope you feel better I'm glad they've given you an anti emetic.

Snuggly one good thing about having a dh who is a builder Grin he has all the tools!

Girlie that's so nice of your mum.

Life that cake is brilliant! Wish I could do that.

Well done mammy! I can't physically run so envy those that do Smile

northender · 08/10/2016 19:51

Lovely day here, so dosed myself up and went out for a walk with dd (her idea). I drove to the city centre where there is a fabulous park with great riverside walks. Spent £5 on a slush and an ice cream.
We had home made chicken nuggets (made with breadcrumbs from last nights leftover garlic bread, true frugality!), curly fries & veg for tea. Dh is getting himself a burger on the way back from the rugby.

northender · 08/10/2016 19:54

Forgot to say, our spindryer died today Sad. We've only had it for 2 years so I'm not too impressed. Going to take it apart and see if we can fix it ourselves. Some part of the motor is definitely burnt out as there was smoke. If we can find out which bit then we could replace it.

WreckTangled · 08/10/2016 19:55

WreckCat has been bitten by fleas again and is pulling his hair out. He doesn't actually have fleas though. We're thinking we might have to keep him indoors Sad

Eva50 · 08/10/2016 20:10

A bit of a disastrous day! The washing machine gave up the ghost this morning and the oven stopped working at dinner time. I had to finish cooking the food in frying pans on the gas hob. £12 in the co-op on two bottles of wine to drink whilst we search gumtree for new appliances.

AGenie · 08/10/2016 20:24

Collie I just remembered that a friend of mine said that it's possible to get NSAIDs as suppositories in order to avoid all the stomach troubles that can be had with them. I wondered if that might help you out in the long term?

Sorry to hear about the spin dryer north and the oven and washing machine Eva. Yikes!

Cagliostro · 08/10/2016 20:31

Hi all, been a nothing sort of day here!

Spent on a takeaway though. Bad Cag. Blush

Taught a new pupil yesterday, the neighbour's DD, all good there.

Sports club went really well yesterday. DH got some more equipment on the Thursday but yesterday's sessions paid for it entirely.

£7 tablets for the cat
£4.49 cava.

Hospital visits are over 👊

North Nooo, you will have soggy washing. I would try arguing a spin dryer ought to last more like 5 years than 2 with the manufacturer. They might replace it out of goodwill. Worst case scenario you buy one off eBay for £30 second hand.

Wreck Has he had a spot on flea treatment?

Tryingtosaveup · 08/10/2016 21:27

Collie, do hope you are feeling better soon. This does seem to have been going on for a while. Poor you hope they sort you out soon. What on earth are NSAIDs?
Life, brilliant cake...wish I could do that. If there is any left please can I have a slice?
Sorry all the appliances are going wrong. Seems like an epidemic. Just before Christmas too.
Another NSD here, doing really well 5th this month.
Builder is coming on Monday to start on the bathrooms so need every penny for that.
But real frugal win. I asked the builder to replace a velux window that was all black and horrible. He came to measure up and take the code number of it and asked me why I wanted to replace it.
I told him it was rotten and disgusting ( been like it since I moved in in January). He told me that there was nothing wrong with it except for the mildew that would wash off with dilute bleach. He was right! He is going to oil it for me instead of my having to buy a new window.
He has some oil and will do it when he starts on the bathroom?
Isn't he a nice man. I am going to recommend him to all my family and friends.

WreckTangled · 08/10/2016 21:29

Fluffy yes everyone without fail we advocate him.

NSAIDs are non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs

WreckTangled · 08/10/2016 21:30

Every month*

Tryingtosaveup · 08/10/2016 21:34

AGenie , I am very interested in investment and have always had unit trusts and shares. But I have never trusted financial advisers. I always think they advise the products with the highest commission, but I know they can't do that now.
I pay into pensions for my DGCs. They are still little but I wish someone had done it for me. For every 80p I pay in HMRC pay 20p so it is worth it. I don't pay much but do it on standing order each month so don't really notice it.
I too worry about Uni fees and living costs for them, but also the chance of any of them buying a house. I was so lucky. I went to uni well before fees and had a full grant because we were so poor.

Fluffycloudland77 · 08/10/2016 21:38

In that case he'll be ok, he's still going to get them but they'll die when they bite him.

Indoor cats can still get fleas.

WreckTangled · 08/10/2016 21:41

It's just he's over grooming he won't stop he's getting more and more bald we're not sure what else we can do, he clearly has a bad reaction to the bites

AdoraBell · 08/10/2016 21:43

£34-ish in supermarket.

WreckTangled · 08/10/2016 21:45

He's fed up

Anti histamines? Vet will know.

Girliefriendlikesflowers · 08/10/2016 21:47

Wreck my friends cat did this and needed the occasional dose of steroids to calm things down, maybe speak to the vet again.

Shesgotelectricboobs · 08/10/2016 22:06

wreck your post made me check kittycatface's records. And then google her flea and worming stuff. Turns out it's a monthly treatment. Not a 3 monthly like I thought.

Must get some on Monday. Although getting it on her will be fun. We're not quite at touching stage yet....

Cagliostro · 08/10/2016 22:44

Blimey threads nearly full already! Must be all the extra pet photos :o

By the way I spoke to DH about the money from mum. He was horrified that I even considered using it for the sofa :o said I mustn't as it's a family/household thing.

Good for him, Cag, spend it on something nice for yourself.

AGenie · 08/10/2016 23:18

Trying Thank you so much for your helpful post. I will look into unit trusts. I hadn't heard of those. I also think about paying into a pension for ds as the compound interest would be amazing starting at this age. Everything that you say fits with my own thoughts, so I'm so glad you chipped into the discussion. I'm keeping thinking about it. If you have any ideas, I'm all ears.

Do you just choose which shares to buy yourself? I feel that I ought to be able to do that, as I know which shops and businesses are good, so I should be able to pick a good one and leave my money with them long term. I haven't actually plucked up the courage to do it yet though. I do also wonder about using my ISA allowance for that too, as the ISA rates are so low just now. Thanks for your thoughts!

AGenie · 08/10/2016 23:31

Cag I agree. Treat yourself. It's setting a good example to your dd, if you do something lovely for yourself.

lifelongfrugaleer · 09/10/2016 06:43

Oh no sound expensive with broken appliances. We have a leaky boilers which will cost £250 to repair, cars need about £500 paying for repair and maintenance. Sigh.
There is loads of cake left, come and have some.

Collieballs · 09/10/2016 07:43

Thanks everyone. I feel a bit better. The pain and sickness has eased. But I'm not going to get too excited like I did last week Blush

The cake upthread looked brilliant!

We need to buy a new vacuum cleaner asap. Also, I have been so sick and lying on the sofa through the night that the sight of my sofa makes me nauseous now. How can looking at a sofa make me feel so rough? Confused I know it's all in my head (obvs) but I want a new sofa. This one is uncomfortable and we've known for a long time that we've need a new sofa.

Going to start looking at them again later. Online.
