Shattered after a day in Newcastle with my mum and DS. Spends: £13.50 family bus ticket, £12.10 M&S cafe, £17.60 in BHS on school uniform (4 shirts and 2 pairs of trousers), £26.03 H&M (a dress and a top for me), £1 Primark sunglasses, as my last ones broke on holiday and 45 pence on a bottle of water. Total: £70.68. My mum treated us to lunch in Five Guys, at DS's behest. £29.95 on 2 burgers, a veggie burger, 2 fries and drinks!Shock It was nice, but I don't think any fast food is worth that much!

ipsogenix · 02/08/2016 17:28

That's really interesting that you say it's too hot to eat there need. That last bit of hot weather really took a lot off my grocery bill as well as the power bills. So interesting to realise the scale of the effect and that you are seeing it too.

lilacclery · 02/08/2016 17:28

trying have you the ability to screenshot your list?

Some of you might recall I was debating giving up my second job and had decided to cut back to just one class from this week onwards, well there's no sign of someone to replace me so I'm going to hand in my notice on both classes now. We've to give 6 weeks notice so that brings me up to mid September if my notice from last month doesn't count.

I feel great about this decision on a personal level and I know from previous experience you can live on less if you have less to live on.

BertieTodd · 02/08/2016 18:36

€94 on groceries and I thought my list this week was quite small Shock. About €40 of that was nappies and other things on special offer that I stocked up on though.

Sierra259 · 02/08/2016 18:47

£45 on online shop but otherwise NSD. Our garden looks like a bomb site after day 1 of the work - can't wait to see it when it's done!

Hope the check up was ok italian. need sounds like you're having a fab time! Enjoy!

lilacclery · 02/08/2016 19:50

Bertie how many of you are you feeding?

Tryingtosaveup · 02/08/2016 20:41

Good idea lilac. I have taken a screen shot of my list on my phone.
Crossed 1 thing off already. Got a nectar card. Now debating whether to download the eBay app and learn how to do it. Is that what I have to do? I don't believe it can be that hard.

BertieTodd · 02/08/2016 20:51

Just DH, DS aged 1 and I lila. That was a SuperValu shop though so all the branded goods we like, will go to Aldi/Lidl next week. Not a good start to a 5 week month though Blush

lilacclery · 02/08/2016 20:56

Ah that's quite a small cost for SuperValu considering you got nappies formula etc

There's 3 adults two dc 2 kittens & 2 dogs eating in our house & when tesco come tomo eve will have spent €180 although €10 to come back in cashback from Lidl going to try trim down that shop a bit further

Fluffycloudland77 · 02/08/2016 21:01

trying

Link the nectar card to eBay using the desktop page, you can't do it on the app.

Download the nectar app for extra points.

I was watching a TV programme about young British ice skaters who hope to qualify for the Olympics in a few years time. One couple were spending £1,000 a month on their daughter (lessons, costumes and skates I presume). They were struggling with that level of expenditure and were hoping to get a sponsor. The family were making a lot of sacrifices for their daughter as it meant no family holidays or days out etc. Her skates were approx. £290 and the blades were approx. £130!

Another girl spent 6 hours a day practicing and had been getting bullied at school because she was coming in late and leaving early. So she persuaded her parents to home school her.

It really opened my eyes to the expenditure involved at that level and made me wonder how many kids with potential lose out because their parents simply couldn't afford it. The parents and kids have to be 100% dedicated too e.g. the mothers getting up at 5 a.m. to drive their kids to their lessons, the kids missing out on friends' birthday parties because they have to practice every night etc.

northender · 02/08/2016 21:32

Just popped in to say hello! I'm back home now after definitely the scariest week of my life. I'm now signed off work for another month & am resting up.
We had to cancel our holiday in France, but have managed to book a week in South East Cornwall at the end of August. Brittany Ferries are refunding 25% of the cost and fortunately we do have cancellation insurance through our bank account so we should get the rest back (minus £100 excess).
In very unlucky circumstances I feel very fortunate to still be here and with no physical weakness etc.

I will catch up properly over the next few days and be posting more frequently as I have time on my hands! Hope everyone is having a good summer so far, despite the weather Smile

WreckTangled · 02/08/2016 21:35

Welcome back north! Hope you're feeling ok Flowers

Taytocrisps · 02/08/2016 21:36

Hope everything's ok north

Whataboutwhathuh · 02/08/2016 21:37

Goodness north, that does not sound good at all. Lots of love.

Tryingtosaveup · 02/08/2016 22:33

Fluffy, I have just downloaded the eBay app. How do I link the nectar card to eBay using the desktop. Sorry I'm not very good at this.

lilacclery · 02/08/2016 22:33

North glad to have you back, scary time for you & your family

Tryingtosaveup · 02/08/2016 22:36

Good Heavans North, have just read your post. Hope you are ok and recover enough to go to Cornwall.
Cornwall is way better than France anyway!

Ememem84 · 02/08/2016 22:36

£10 on engagement card and gift (hand printed jersey tea towel) for Bil and stbsil. We'll send them something in the post once they get home to NZ.

Dinner with them tonight at our house. Red Thai chicken curry. And a bottle of wine £7.99 for wine. Everything else we had at home.

Such a lovely evening.

Ememem84 · 02/08/2016 22:37

north I hope everything's ok. Feel better soon x X

Sierra259 · 02/08/2016 23:15

Hope you're ok north Flowers

needastrongone · 03/08/2016 01:17

Oh North, poor you. And your family. Take care. Rest up these few weeks. Will you manage the cricket season?

Tayto, I agree totally and that's an interesting post. DD's hobby is very expensive, and the team trainer/organiser books us into all sorts or displays and competitions all over the country at a moments notice. Filling the horse box is £100 per trip. Never mind the food, equine upkeep, cost of training, team uniform. Not a thought to that. Just do the comp or get booted out of the team. If you can't afford it, or a pony, tough. We finish with this team soon, and in some ways, many ways actually, it will be a relief. That said, she's got to ride at some amazing places this year, but it's in no way inclusive.

Nice evening Em.

Ipsos, I can honestly agree with that statement about appetite and heat. I had 2 chicken nuggets for lunch and then a lovely tea of chicken and salad when it had cooled down. Surely, there must be something in it though, I am thinking of all the hearty food we eat in winter, and the lighter options we choose in summer?

Today we have only paid for parking, food in the parks and tea, no treats. Sat at the pool, drinking a glass of wine, it's 8.15 pm here, and 29 degrees, but lovely. The heat, although wonderful, is somewhat oppressive at 35 degrees mid afternoon in the middle of a theme park Smile Hard life, innit?!

ipsogenix · 03/08/2016 06:10

Need Your holiday does sound wonderful. The heat does definitely help the frugaleering. I'm even doing far less clothes washing because we're all just wearing shorts and a t-shirt so there is very little to wash. Smile Great!

North Your week sounds awful. I'm so glad you're back and hope you have a restful week to recover.

WreckTangled · 03/08/2016 06:30

Dd has woken up with a very swollen eye. Apparently I didn't get all of the face paint off and she's allergic Blush I've given piriton hopefully it'll help if not I might need to call the doctor. Otherwise I'm not planning on doing anything today so should be nsd. I'm aching from ripped in 30 and spinning yesterday.
