I can't remember my August goals Blush and my posts have been deleted do I can't look back on the August thread.

September goals:
1- make £70 on eBay
2- get Scottish Power sorted ( they said they'll get back to me within 10 days)
3- end the month in credit
4- buy a few Christmas presents
5- buy 1 item of food each week for the Christmas store cupboard
6- reduce car insurance by £10 a month
7- learn 4 new slow cooker recipes

Binglet · 31/08/2015 17:03

Sorry for your loss Electrolux Sending love your way.

What does everyone buy in advance for Christmas food wise? I want to start putting some extras onto the monthly shop but have no idea what to buy apart from the obvious alcohol

Whatabout · 31/08/2015 17:07

Sorry for your loss Electrolux x

I typed a massive post earlier and lost it boo!

So the first things for my Christmas store cupboard are goose fat, recurring jelly (I don't like cranberry) and some currants. I need to look at use by dates on some things, but I've seen the big boxes of chocolates are in store so I'll buy one of those next week I think.

babsmam · 31/08/2015 17:08

Binglet I get nuts, crisps, crackers, that kind of stuff

Binglet · 31/08/2015 17:08

I've got some meringues and a jar of mincemeat of unknown age in my Christmas cupboard Confused

babsmam · 31/08/2015 17:10

Chocolate and pop too too but it all has to be well hidden. I also get my baking cupboard ready to go.
Ready roll pastry in the freezer, if you have room extra bread and milk butter etc

Binglet · 31/08/2015 17:11

Thank you! I shall start next shop. DP Likes nuts and things like that that should last x

Nc19999992 · 31/08/2015 17:12

Hiya all! Can I join in?

We are planning our wedding (November this year!) saving for a mortgage, have 2 preschool dc (1&2) and are a single income household.. Things are snug!

Can someone explain some of the terms on here? Ynab or similar?

My first aim is to have a clear out, mainly to the charity shop because none of its branded, and to shop at lidl instead of Tesco to see if it's cheaper.. But the idea of dragging the kids out to the shops is horrid... Anyone have any idea on the savings?

PeoniesforMissAnnersley · 31/08/2015 17:12

recurring jelly sounds a bit suspect what Grin

We get xmas pud, ingredients for mince-meat as I make my own so brandy, mixed fruit, suet etc, goose fat, booze, nice tea, coffee, jams... most other stuff is fresh meat, veg etc.

We usually have eggs and smoked trout or salmon for brekkie on xmas day but I absolutely love the nasty, processed just-rol boxes of cook-at-home pain au chocolats/danishes so we might do that this year Grin

babsmam · 31/08/2015 17:12

Recurring jelly Grin I need that in my house too.

Yy to jar stuff goosefat, cranberry, stuffing mix

PeoniesforMissAnnersley · 31/08/2015 17:13

Oh yes and a bit nearer I'd get nuts and other snacky things but not until November.

Collieputthekettleon · 31/08/2015 17:23

Pickled things, crackers, shloer or J2os (if on offer), chocolates, biscuits or even just Twinings Everyday Tea (just a little box for Christmas week). I want to make my own stuffing this year. But I have a box already just in case it all goes tits up.

The use by dates are a worry but I'll check before buying anything.

We're going to sit down and meal plan Christmas week tonight so we have an idea of what we need to get. If I had the spare money then I'd wait for a few months that but we don't & I'd like to take advantage of all the offers. Smile

Collieputthekettleon · 31/08/2015 17:26

Welcome NC I love your term "snug"

YNAB is the You Need A Budget app.
NSD is No Spend Day
LSD is Low Spend Day

Collieputthekettleon · 31/08/2015 17:27

"Recurring jelly" reminds me of Nessa from Gavin & Stacey Grin

I don't stock up on anything for Christmas but we don't host so no need.

August came £5 under budget. Woo hoo!

Welcome newcomers!
Sorry to hear about your dad Electrolux. Nice to have you back.
Collie I am probably being thick but why do tampons get on the beach when it rains??
I have the Lakeland heated airer. I like it because you can fold it away unlike a tumble dryer and also I can fit two loads of washing on at once. I use it sparingly though because of running cost and also it creates a lot of condensation. In the depths of winter I really appreciate it and I use it as a normal clothes horse the rest of the year.
Spent much more than I intended in Sainsburys as I bought my leggings and also 2 tops and a dress. DH also bought a shirt. Then we went to Next and he bought me another top and a cord skirt for my birthday - I love cords! Also bought a t shirt for my niece in America as my dad is visiting her next week and I usually send a little something. So a spendy day but I think I now have winter clothes covered apart from footwear, my boots are falling apart after 4 years heavy use. Going to see if I get any birthday money!
Meal plan:
M: Panir tikka and lentil salad
T: Shepherds pie made with Quorn
W: Lentil dhal and naan
T: Cauliflower cheese and crusty bread
F: Roasted veg, halloumi &cous cous with leftovers for a picnic on Saturday
S: Birthday take away
S: Toad in hole
M: Toad in hole leftovers
Need to update my spreadsheet. Hard this month as Sept will be my first month part time and I don't know exactly what I'll be paid. I worked it out approximately but not sure what tax, NI and pension will be. I also need to reduce my salary sacrifice for childcare vouchers as we won't be paying for as many days at nursery.

574ejones · 31/08/2015 17:45

Flowers for electrolux and unescorted.

NSD today. Made Kale & Potato soup in an attempt to be frugal and the nicest thing I can say about it is that it tasted "wholesome". I will finish it but won't be making it again Grin.

Been for a lovely (free) walk this afternoon.

For Xmas, I usually buy shortbread, posh biscuits, nuts, snacks, condiments for the day, stollen, alcohol and nicer soft drinks (basically a load of food that is really bad for you)!! Might start from next week actually.

Whatabout · 31/08/2015 17:46

My auto correct is a thing of beauty. I shall cock and collect my recurring jelly..

SusanDelfino · 31/08/2015 17:47

Hello everyone!

I've been lurking for ages but with the next month about to start I thought it would be a good time to join.

My marriage is on the out so I'm on a major money saving mission to get together a decent cushion for myself to prepare for life as a single mum. I only work one day a week and get a minuscule amount of CTC so saving is a slow process to say the least.

I'm hoping that this thread will keep me on the straight as I'm a terrible money fritterer.

AuditAngel · 31/08/2015 18:01

Welcome newbies.

Weather here today is wet and cold. I took the DC up to Central London to see Aliens love underpants, which we won a family ticket for from MN.

Due to weather, I decided to drive, parking was £14, which is probably a lithe more than a travel card and two kids travel cards, but much pleasanter journey. £3.50 on a stupid alien thing at the show for DD2.

£45 on diesel, to reclaim from work, plus £4.50 on drinks to take to the theatre.

Girlfriend36 · 31/08/2015 18:24

electrolux Flowers

Spends
£5 at the cinema, it was a kids club film so £2.50 a ticket Smile
£6.50 at MacDonalds on lunch for me and dd.

No other spends.

Went blackberry and apple picking this afternoon, there is a community orchard close to where my mum lives so we checked it out and got lots of fruit. Am now stewing the apples slightly to make a crumble - smells lush!

Looked on t' internet earlier at theatre tickets to maybe catch a show the end of the year and depressed myself at how expensive the tickets are. was looking at at least £50 for half decent seats. Makes me angry really as means a trip to the theatre is out of reach for lots of people.

Randomly found a pair of kids boots and a pair of kids sandals outside the cinema by a bag of rubbish Confused they are not in bad nick so picked them up Blush they are way too small for my dd but might be o.kay for my friends if not will take to charity shop. Just seemed weird that someone would dump them!

Fluffycloudland77 · 31/08/2015 18:32

Excellent savings Binglet

Unescorted and Electrolux* Flowers

Christmas things often have really long dates because of the amount of sugar in them. The christmas puddings often have over a year, sometimes two on them and are half price after christmas.

NSD.

Collieputthekettleon · 31/08/2015 18:33

pointless because SW Water overflows sewage on to the beaches when it rains a lot Sad grim! There was a surfer who had a tampon floating around his face last week.

Welcome Susan Smile I was a queen fritterer.

And well done spotty!
