I've been thinking about the bleach thread that's been on MN this week and I'd really like to use more natural cleaning methods - I'm guessing this would also be a lot cheaper. I already make my own vinegar spray for doing the windows. I know that vinegar and bicarb are good for cleaning but how do I use them and in what quantities? I'm thinking of making this my new money saving and eco-friendly challenge!

Lovetoknit · 11/08/2015 13:52

It's definitely hard to find work in SW collie especially if you want part time work during school hours to save on child care costs but I will keep looking.
Yesterday we went to buy just some curtain tracks for dcs windows and ended up buying a new lawnmower in the sale too. The old one is on its last legs and can't be repaired. Found a new light shade for ds in the sale too.
Bought some bedding in the sale too which I am going turn into the curtains for my dds, the younger one picked Frozen and older one dark pink with glow in the dark stars. We can't have ready made curtains since the windows needs 95"drop so it's sewing day today. Going to be frugal and reuse some old blue curtains as lining.

We had a pet owl when I was growing up.

Nsd.

Collie I hear you on the job front.

Wheely Thanks

I have appt for haircut and colour tomorrow, it really needs something done, I have a lot of grey (only just turned 30 too!) and a fringe that is almost grown out and at the super awkward not-quite-fringe-but-too-short-to-be-actual-hair phase and am really tempted to get it cut back into a fringe! Am thinking of a chin length bob but want to be modern and not mumsy/boring. Any ideas?? I have thick black hair and pale skin with hazel eyes and am very short.

Also have arrangements to meet a friend in London tonight which will be dear, but after this no plans made and will be battening down the hatches!

NK5BM3 · 11/08/2015 16:50

Oh,.. BFFF today. Went to the outlet store. Bought school shoes x2 + one lunch bag = £52. Given that ds' shoes would have been £40 and dd's £32 at a normal Clark's shop, I guess that's ok.

Then to crocs - ds ruined his crocs. Tbf they were sainburys ones for £6. I got him a proper crocs one at size 1 and there was a buy one get one 50% so I bought a pair of black croc shoes which I can use for work. It feels fab!! £20.

£5 eyebrow threading.

£25 lunch at Wagamamas. As a Chinese person I resent that place, but ds likes it.

£27 at fat face for jeans for dh and flip flops for dd.

£70 at gap for 3 pairs of jeans. 2 for me and 1 for dh.

Argh.

What about the NHS admin bank, if your local hospital has one? Might be a foot in the door to something more permanent.

Ursulatodd · 11/08/2015 18:07

Hello everyone...room for a newbie (well, long time lurker ;) )
I've been following with interest over the past year whilst we desperately saved money for our wedding but felt unable to join in as at times it felt like we were hemorrhaging money rather than being frugal!
Anyway, we're now back from honeymoon with thoughts of saving money towards home-improvements (including some structural work) so I'm ready to get stuck in!
Today's spends: £5.68 on 40 thank you cards. £6.08 in local shop on ingredients for dinner.
Good frugal things: got a massive box of tomatos reduced to £1 (think half a crate) so we're making a tomato relish and the rest are in the slow cooker to make soup for tomorrow; tomato relish is to accompany Jack Monroe's famous '9p' carrot and kidney bean burgers - it's the first time I've made them and they're looking pretty good!; have sold a chair of FB (not collected yet but £15 when it is!)

girliefriend · 11/08/2015 18:20

Welcome Ursula Smile

Have managed a LSD £1.50 on a pot of tea! Been out to a local free NT place with friends and their kids, took a picnic and games to play.

Dd now has a friend over for a sleepover and they have taken themselves off to the park, hoping can trust them on their own! The park is at the end of the road though Hmm they had toad in the hole with veg for tea and I used up some mince and did a mini lasagne for me - was all very nice and frugal to boot Smile

Have got some snacks and crisps they can have for a 'midnight' feast later (at about 9pm Wink)

AdoraBell · 11/08/2015 18:20

Welcome Ursulatodd and Congratulations.

£4 on socks for DD1, £6 ish on drink and snacks as I went out with DD2. She Spent £30 pocket money. She borrowed that from me as her pocket money is in Bank of Dad. Once she excracts the cash from him she'll pay me back.

NK what's wrong with Wagamamas? If you can say on here, of course. We've never been there.

11 in aldi on the bits I really need. £1 on parking for swimming lessons.

Hi ursula

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 11/08/2015 19:00

Welcome, Ursula.

Another NSD here, two in a row. Checked my account balance and have more in the account than usually in there at this point. Even being quite bad at frugaleering seems to be working. Will be even better if I manage to stick to the budget and not blow it on rubbish in Tesco in the way home from work.

It's making me feel slightly less anxious about next year than I was before.

574ejones · 11/08/2015 19:32

Another NSD but this won't last as I need something fixed on my car shortly.

I finish my job on Friday to start a permanent, better paid (marginally) one on Monday. Im going to miss my colleagues.

Welcome Ursula!

Ursulatodd · 11/08/2015 19:45

Thanks for the welcomes!
The bean burgers were flippin delicious! :)

Whatabout · 11/08/2015 19:57

Welcome urusla, I need to look at s girl called jack, I've heard good things!

Yesterday we went to Thomas land, spends were lunch and ice creams on top of the entry, came to £70. Used club card vouchers for DH so saved £36 and I was quite pleased with what we spent and didn't bring home any tat!

Today DH bought us McDonald's for lunch, we do it cheaply by buying one large meal and an extra burger and then sharing the chips etc.. He also paid £50 deposit for a stag do. Personally I've spent nothing, I really wanted to go out and just shop, but I didn't! Feel very chuffed at this.

Fluffycloudland77 · 11/08/2015 20:17

pointless I never know why people mix vinegar and bicarb together, surely they cancel each other out? YY to washing up liquid and hot water, you can clean most things with that and neat vinegar on metal for limescale or poured in the kettle for descaling. You can reuse it for that too.

Ipsos did you find out why the drain blocked?.

collie It sounds really hard where you are to get a job. Keep trying.

Welcome ursula.

Spotty Only 5 days till DDay! (dishwasher day). Have you got dw salt and rinseaid? When I bought our first dw the manual said to use "solo" detergant, rinseaid and salt. It took me an embarrasing amount of googling to realise they meant individual products rather than a brand called "solo". Lidl do very good rinseaid and salt.

£83 in the vet because the cat has a water infection.
