Ipsos, back in the day when I was working we had the spare money to put away each month for DCs. Currently we have total control of the accounts and certainly won't just be handing it over! Thinking uni fees, 1st car etc etc

needastrongone · 25/06/2015 13:26

Ah collie. Hope you cheer up soon. Good news re the car at least.

I can only speak from my own point of view, but we opened a savings account for each of the DC when they were tiny that only I had access to. Birthday money and a monthly payment went in.

Last year, when the DC were about 15/13 I changed the accounts so that they are in the DC's names, and they have a debit card but no overdraft facility. We pay £40 per month in, no pocket money of any kind. I will buy them essential clothes. They pay for anything else they want. They can keep their birthday money from relatives if they so wish.

DH thought long and hard about this. There is £2.5k in each of their accounts, which is a hell of a lot of money built up over years. But, it is THEIR money, to make their own choices with. I made it clear that we hoped they would make sensible choices and really, this is money to use for university, or such, that we hoped they would discuss large spends with us. But, if they blow it, well, they blow it and that would be a lesson in itself.

So far, DS has spent about £30, DD perhaps £100. This includes their Christmas presents for others and DD has bought a couple of items for the pony and a few clothes. DD will phone me if she is out with her friends and ask if she can withdraw cash, she doesn't have to though. So, they have spent far less than has gone in.

I am really keen that the DC are as independent and ready for life before they leave home, as much as they can be. My own mother did everything for us and I was useless. So, they have to do household chores, iron, walk dogs and manage their own money Grin

Caveat is that my DC are teenagers!!!

sportinguista · 25/06/2015 13:27

Today so far is NSD but I need milk and some chewing gum for DH.

Long phone call to Virgin about DH's mobile which had gone for repair, after 3.5 weeks and 5 phone calls to try and work out what exactly they were doing with it variously claiming to have fixed it/being in the process of fixing it and now finally admitting that they can't fix it so are sending a brand new phone out. Seriously p**d off with their idea of customer service (the story kept changing each time I rang) I've asked for a rebate on his bill and told them we will not be renewing when the contract finishes.

Phoned Sky to cancel the sports as they haven't got champions league next season which is all DH watches anyway (we are going to switch to internet streaming service) so £38 off bill as they threw in half price on our other bits for 6 months so all good.

Getting more work and clients that are in it for the long haul which is good...

Hope today goes well too NK and you can relax a bit.

I have done that too Audit, I go in and just see things that I just somehow need. I try to stay away from the clothes aisle. On balance I did get 2 bras for £5 the other week which was I feel a frugal win!

Have transferred money from DCs to our bank account to clear the loan. Thanks you lovely lot Thanks

Am sure this has been answered previously but does anyone know the cheapest way/place to buy holiday euros? We've previously used the bank but am sure we would get a better rate/deal elsewhere. Looking to take cash.

Fluffycloudland77 · 25/06/2015 15:36

I think mse had an article on Euros in their weekly email. Check their homepage

girliefriend · 25/06/2015 15:44

Peppa normally the post office offer a fair exchange?

Collie I don't reckon it will rain much this wend plus thats when camping is at its most memorable!!

NSD so far although am planning on getting dd an ice cream later as she did very well at sports day, she won the 300m race Grin

Had an interesting session with my counseller today, talked about money and the fact that I rarely spend anything on myself and if I do I feel guilty etc she said it is almost like self punishment. Which is linked into feeling guilty about being a single parent. Hmm def food for thought, I know I am guilty of spending money on dd without worrying about it but the same is not true for myself.....

PeoniesforMissAnnersley · 25/06/2015 15:49

NSD today, bought wine as work presents for leavers but will get that back.

Am trying to stop myself going to boots for the Nip + Fab pads from the MN email, I am prone to blackheads and they're meant to be very effective.

Well done girlie's DD Smile

SpottyTeacakes · 25/06/2015 17:28

£4 parking
£14.49 KFC. Mmmmm

Peppapissinpig · 25/06/2015 17:28

Fluffycloudland77 · 25/06/2015 17:36

My dd (9yo) has a child trust fund (she was one of the lucky ones who benefitted from them) I put £10 a month in and her Grandad puts £25 a month so when she is 18 there hopefully will be quite a large lump sum.

She also has a savings account that she puts bday/Christmas money in, I think she has about £100 in there at the moment.

I don't do pocket money though, I feel she has enough spent on her really with riding and swimming lessons etc.

JamHoneyMarmite · 25/06/2015 18:22

NSD because I had to wait in all flipping day for Yodel. Humph.

Does anyone know if the plastic milk containers are OK to freeze? Attempting to get the very most from lunchtime's roast chicken, so stripped most of the meat and saved for sandwiches/curry, then made soup from the carcass and leftover potatoes. Can I freeze the soup in a rinsed milk container? Run out of other options!

SpottyTeacakes · 25/06/2015 18:22

Ds has £300 and dd has £500. They're only 2 and 5 though. Hopefully once they're old enough they'll have enough to buy their first car and insure it. We will never be able to save them loads but hopefully it'll help.

NSD so far but DH has just gone to do the weekly shop, goodness knows what he will come back with. I have written a very detailed list including where to find things and the max he can spend on certain items. He's wonderful but crap at looking for things plus he hates the supermarket but I still can't drive and am meant to be resting my leg.
The doctor has referred me to physio and offered to sign me off work but it is
the busiest time of the year so I said no. I'm wondering if I'm going to regret that though.

SpottyTeacakes · 25/06/2015 19:33

You can sign yourself off if you like pointless for a maximum of a week.

Ah I'm so happy. The sun makes me happy. Even the skanky fat fly buzzing around me isn't ruining my good mood Smile

Evilwater · 25/06/2015 19:57

Today's spend £3.50, for three ice creams. :)

I'm not sure what to do tomorrow. I could go to the beach £4.50 at wembury, but I have no beach stuff so it's £15 on pop up tent and a couple of quid on a spade and bucket.

Or
Pennywell farm, (£13.95) DS is under 3 so is free.

Or
A picnic and a boat ride in the sound, or the ferry to mount edgecombe. Again more £ on parking.

Fluffycloudland77 · 25/06/2015 19:59

£25 jeans but mil might buy them for my birthday.

Pointlessfan · 25/06/2015 20:07

Bless DH, he just texted me from the supermarket to see if I thought an offer was worth it (I didn't!).
I've already had a few days off with my leg and there is so much to do before the end of term. I don't know what to do, I'll feel like I'm doing the wrong thing either way!

Fluffycloudland77 · 25/06/2015 20:20

Drs don't usually offer to sign you off for no reason and you have to live with that knee for years to come.

Catmint · 25/06/2015 20:30

Hello, I hope it's okay to pop my head round the door..

I thought you might be interested that Dickens & Jones jeans at House of Fraser are currently £16.50 reduced from £55.

Pointlessfan · 25/06/2015 20:47

I know fluffy and if she'd said she wanted me to stay at home and rest it I'd have listened but she just said she'd write me a sick note if I wanted and left itt up to me. I'm not very good at resting!
