Pasta bake with bacon chucked in & garlic bread. Total cost less than £1 per head.
Plates scraped clean.

Last night it was hunters chicken with rice.

I haven't found anything we haven't liked since I started shopping there.

Saved loads of money and we eat really well.

Oh... has anyone tried the baked beans? Strict Heinz buyers atm and haven't been brave enough to try aldi's own Wink

chocolatespiders · 20/01/2014 23:18

We tried beans and liked -worth trying one tin and seeing if you like. Ketchup is good

Fluffycloudland77 · 21/01/2014 07:20

We have the beans. Too much sauce in the Heinz ones now.

Mine sells pastry but I make my own in a food processer which is pennies to do. I can't make it by hand.

Moodykat · 21/01/2014 09:30

Last night we had the Beef Wellington - its not cheap but it was absolutely delish!
Unfortunately I've had to cave and have an Ocado order coming tonight as no time to get into town for shops. Will be Aldi-ing again next week though!

shobby · 23/01/2014 21:02

Wisely shopped early today, lots of new deals (and Easter eggs FFS!) spent £70, would normally spend over£100 at Sainsburys.
We are trying the pasta bake sauces and garlic mushrooms after recommendations on this thread this week, DH was most impressed with the half leg of lamb and the aged steaks so they will be a regular purchase.

shobby · 23/01/2014 21:08

Arrrgh, forgot to mention also trying the face cream, amazing value at less than £2 a pot and so far hasn't made my eyes stream like some makes do!

DIddled · 23/01/2014 21:30

I go mad and get the 3.99 face cream with the red top- bought one today- it's brilliant, so rich but gentle.

Supermum222 · 26/01/2014 19:23

Do they sell children's shampoo and toothpaste?

mumtoblaire · 27/01/2014 19:43

Aldi convert here.

Just spent £30.66 on weekly shop for two adults and two kids. And i was in and out in 20mins!!!

Love their jars of Chicken delight and the kids love the chocolate hazelnut spread more than nutella.

Rikalaily · 27/01/2014 20:17

They definitely sell kids shampoo, not sure about the toothpaste though.

Had the salmon wellington (the cheese and dill sauce one) tonight and it was gorgeous Smile

Summergarden · 11/02/2014 11:40

Lidl definitely sell kids toothpaste, my dd loves it.

MsAspreyDiamonds · 14/02/2014 04:30

I really want to try Aldi but my nearest one is a 30 minute drive away in a dodgy part of town.

sugar4eva · 14/02/2014 08:35

Ms ; if you live a good distance away it may still benefit from doing a bulk shop there .once a month I get 4 free range chickens : 5 pounds each. Beans , cous cous etc .just a thought!

bbcessex · 14/02/2014 20:01

Bit miffed with Aldi today - their Almat Washing powder (which is good).. has shrunk.. now 25 washes, instead of 28 (and box weighs less), yet same price.

Hmm.. I do wonder if Aldi is going to creep up in price / stealth creep, now it's more popular.

Still going to be better value, but it will be a damn shame if they erode their USP.

Fluffycloudland77 · 16/02/2014 09:06

The price has gone own too though, I only use 3 dessert spoons per wash though.

Jaisalmer · 16/02/2014 10:00

It is brilliant value but I still struggle to see how anyone could feed a family of 4 there for £30? Mumtoblaire what did you buy for that amount for a week if you don't mind me asking? I went in on Friday and spent £31 on mostly fruit, veg, eggs, milk, yoghurt, bread etc. Put the same into Ocado on-line and it would have cost £50 - great saving but sure isn't going to feed us for the week!

Trying the £5 free range chicken today - really excited and hoping it tastes good! I normally buy mine from Abel and Cole where they cost a tenner but are the best chickens on earth so will be an interesting comparison.

Their bottled sparkling water is 17p per 2 litres which is stunningly cheap!

15 eggs for £2.25 whereas half a dozen cost £2 in Tesco (free range that is).

I still shake when I get to the tills in case I'm not fast enough and some sort of klaxon goes off! Grin!

bbcessex · 16/02/2014 17:57

fluffycloudland - has the price gone down? I didn't think so, thought it was the same, but would be very happy if it had... agree that it's still good value, and I am still delighted with even the cheapy dishwasher tablets, which work brilliantly..

Jaisalmer - let me know what you think of the chicken..

Fluffycloudland77 · 16/02/2014 18:22

I think it was £2.98, now it's £2.49. I think.

Jaisalmer · 16/02/2014 19:11

It's in the oven now and i must say it smells very good! Will report back. Aldi stuffing too Smile. All veg from Aldi and they are as superb as ever.

I can't believe I'm typing this as I am such a Waitrose devotee Grin!

hickorychicken · 16/02/2014 19:23

I thought i loved Aldi. I dont.
I thought id saved loads by things being cheaper but im a bit of a cynic. Im pretty sure the reason i saved a bit is because the place is so chaotic i forgot/ couldnt get to half of what i needed. And things maybe cheaper but also smaller... i bought pork steaks ( they were gross too) and thought oooh a nice bit cheaper than tesco but then i worked it out to be fek all difference because of size etc.
I dont like the race at the end....i dont want to get a nervous sweat on going through the checkout!!
I also think theyl start stealthily creeping prices up.
I do like the cheap veg though.
And nappies are shite Grin

bbcessex · 16/02/2014 19:26

historychicken... oh no, don't say that - I'm afraid I'll go the same way too and I don't want to.. I have saved so much money since cutting back on groceries.. I can't go back to the Waitrose / Tesco black hole.. noooooo! I do think some of the prices may creep up at Aldi as it gets more and more popular, so I'm being vigilant there.

We just had the pork steaks for dinner, funnily enough... I thought they were really really good..

hickorychicken · 16/02/2014 19:32

It might be my cooking haha :)

SauvignonBlanche · 16/02/2014 19:34

I'm going in the morning. I hope they've got the NZ Sauvignon Blanc.

Jaisalmer · 16/02/2014 19:35

Well I am very pleased to report that the free range chicken is absolutely delicious! I say that as an Abel and Cole chicken devotee but these are half the price and just as tasty.

I really didn't want to like Aldi as I am a total food snob but it's got me completely hooked. I still loathe the scrum at the checkout and am slowly trying to stop myself making conversation with the people on the checkouts as they clearly don't want to talk about the weather with me! My way of making it seem like a better experience is to bash in my total spent into Ocado when I get home and see how much I've saved.

Hickory if you compare like for like though you will see that you are saving loads on each item not just because you didn't find the things you wanted. It is irritating that I agree but I'm trying to get over it for my current account's sake!

jimijack · 16/02/2014 19:39

The hunters chicken sauce is Devine. We love it.
