Pasta bake with bacon chucked in & garlic bread. Total cost less than £1 per head.
Plates scraped clean.

Last night it was hunters chicken with rice.

I haven't found anything we haven't liked since I started shopping there.

Saved loads of money and we eat really well.

OP posts:
Freshstartornot · 09/01/2014 15:59

the items i find great at aldi are the hunters sauce in a jar which i do in the slow cooker with chicken and cheese. All their pasta sauces which the children love Smile

FuckyNell · 09/01/2014 16:02

Okay I'm in.

FuckyNell · 09/01/2014 16:04

Oops! Have just cancelled my ocado shop based purely on 3jobs pie and bananas gnocchi thingy. I BETTER NOT REGRET IT Grin

FruitSaladIsNotPudding · 09/01/2014 16:09

Fruit and veg great except for the apples in a bag, which tend to be bruised, and the bog standard white potatoes, which are a really odd texture - their posher Maris pipers are fine though, and still cheap ish.

blibblibs · 09/01/2014 16:14

The beans & brown sauce are fine too.

DH & DC claim the cheese puffs (10 for £1) are better than wotsits.

Had the four bird roast for xmas dinner - was edible, just, but wouldn't have it again.

The lasagne is the best thing you'll ever eat Smile

Only thing I can't get there is coffee, although I haven't actually tried any they just look rubbish. Stupid I know Blush

Mildpanic · 09/01/2014 16:23

You won't regret it. I am a complete convert, after years of being a bit snobby about supermarket choice. The veg is great. Really like the cream cheese and their continental cheese. Jars of olives are good. Biscuits as good as big brands. Their Frosties are just as good but much cheaper.
I am saving a fortune on their own brand nappies but so far only 4 weeks in with the first size so time will tell. I have heard good things though.
I particularly love the sparkling pink Pinot Grigio at £4.29. Gin also highly rated.
My DS is a cauli cheese fan but doesn't like theirs though, I know many do.
DH always comes in to look at what he has named " the man section" ( the stuff down the middle aisles) he came out with a soldering iron the other day for £5.99 which I laughed at but he has mended a few really useful items in the house!
Pasta suces definitely worth a try.
Enjoy the bargains.

PoopPoooDeDooo · 09/01/2014 16:33

lemon and mascpone cheesecake yumyumyum

plum brulee tart

toro loco red wine

Deux · 09/01/2014 16:50

I love Aldi too. I just tried their frozen double pepperoni pizza at 99 p. it was great and the DC's said it was better than the one i usually get, the tesco fresh one. The Tesco one is not worth the extra 1.49.

Where in the store is the Hunters sauce located as I've not seen it?

Deux · 09/01/2014 16:51

Sorry, DCs. Errant apostrophe.

Fluffycloudland77 · 09/01/2014 18:34

The really cheap pasta sauce makes excellent pizza base sauce, on homemade pizza bases it tastes better than anything I've had before.

bbcessex · 09/01/2014 18:48

Oops - just did another post, didn't see this one... been to Aldi today and they have wholewheat pasta in, which is great. Plus super 6 this week includes pack of 4 garlic for 39p, and really fresh looking Savoy cabbages.. 39p.

Happy Aldi Days :-)

SoonToBeSix · 11/01/2014 23:42

Marking place for tips Smile

Jinty64 · 12/01/2014 10:56

The Maris Piper chunky Chips went down really well with the fussy teenagers. We are getting a new Aldi built at our local retail park - I can't wait!

Tiredemma · 12/01/2014 10:57

I plan most meals now from this-

love aldi

ihatethecold · 12/01/2014 12:20

The chunky frozen chips are better than homefries.
The aged steak is amazing.
The pasta sauces and fajita packs are very good.
We buy the big packs of chicken breasts , i thinks its a kilo for £7 and freeze them.
The mince is good but i dont buy the cheapest mince. might be aberdeen angus.
The frozen salmon en croute for 4 people is delish.
Nice frozen new york cheesecakes.
Ditto the cornettos.
chocolate with almonds in is so nice im in danger of eating to much of it.

Im so converted to doing my weekly shop there.
The only thing so far i wouldnt buy again was the frozen stuffed turkey with bacon on.

SingingGerbil · 12/01/2014 22:23

The red peppers stuffed with cream cheese are delightful Grin

Moodykat · 13/01/2014 10:13

Ok, so I went!

Spent £93 (eek!) but then when I got home I took my receipt and did an online shop on Tesco for the same things - came to £120 for the things I could find. The things I bought in Aldi that Tesco didn't sell (ski gloves and face/eye cream) came to £10. So a massive saving!

Bought lots of stuff and not managed to try much yet! Didn't like the lamb shanks much. The snack selection (18 packs for £1.49) is a bit crappy - but what do you expect?!

Am looking forwards to trying all the other stuff I bought!

Oh, and the face cream and eye cream are lovely although I think that is old news!

Tiredemma · 13/01/2014 10:21

I had a leg of lamb from there recently and it was amazing. As is the Beef.

Their 'snackrite' crisps are as good as Walkers.

Im going to have to go to aldi again today I think.

dotty2 · 13/01/2014 10:29

For the person asking about wine recommendations, check out supermarketwine.com. It's a great site that aggregates recommendations from all the newspaper wine columns, and you can search by supermarket and there's always Aldi wine recs. (though you might have to scroll back a bit at the mo as they had a special Christmas range which got loads of recommendations but will be gone now)

mercibucket · 13/01/2014 10:35

I love aldi too but I don't get the excitement about a pasta sauce. surely it wasn't that much more amazing than any other pasta sauce?

Jemimapuddlemuck · 13/01/2014 10:37

The fresh orange juice is better than Tropicana, IMO.

Artandco · 13/01/2014 20:18

I don't like. I wanted a few things the other day when near friends ( not usually near one). Couldn't find any aubergine, pineapple or blueberries. No choice of things either. Ie only one type of stock cube, we needed gluten free ones so no help. So out of a list of 20 things, I could actually only buy 8.

ihatethecold · 13/01/2014 20:45

That's the best thing about Aldi.
No choice. Your in and out so quickly.

Flossiechops · 14/01/2014 07:06

Just wanted to say a huge THANKS for this thread. I decided after years of shopping in Tesco to give it a go. I nearly fell to the floor when I went through the checkout & the bill for my usual weeks shop came to £35!!! Not keen on the checkout lady virtually throwing the food at me though - but worth it for half the usual price Smile

Gileswithachainsaw · 14/01/2014 07:19

I love aldi. Who on earth can complain at 26p for tomato purée and passata.

Their seeded par baked rolls are good and the sandwich meats are no worse than anywhere else. Their garlic bread slices are good. Nothing spectacular but perfectly fine and they are dairy free !! They do pink lady apples which makes my dds very happy. Coconut milk chick pears and kidney beans which I keep stashes of.
