COVID vaccine? Does it do anything?

Greybottle · 09/12/2024 13:45

I jumped at getting the COVID vaccines when they came out and I got all the vaccines that I was eligible for to date except for this year.

I got COVID in the summer time and I wasn't able to get the vaccine this winter. My GP recommended a 4 month wait.

It's just I got COVID twice. Once in 2022 and I had that bad too. I wasn't hospitalised but still I was ill with fever, body aches, headaches and coughs for over a week. I was rushed back to work prepaturely when I still wasn't 100% better.

I got COVID this summer too. I was floored with it.

A lot of people were floored with it this summer. Even though we got the COVID vaccines.

It's just I got a reminder text to book the vaccine today and I just don't know.

I am not anti vaccine but what is the point of the vaccine when youre still going to get exposed and become ill to this anyways?

I got flu in 2004 or 2005 and I was getting flu vaccine because of my work from about 2008 and I never had flue since 04/05. The flu vaccine works. But I am questioning the COVID vaccine? What is the point of going out of my way to travel to an establishment to get jabbed and sore for a few days and if I am exposed to COVID, I am likely still going to get it.

no, are you?

You are making an awful lot of ridiculous statements with no basis in fact or science - anecdotes don’t count 🙄

sakura06 · 09/12/2024 14:51

I do know what you mean. The vaccine did reduce the severity for me when we were in the midst of the pandemic (pre-vaccination I was bed-ridden for 2 weeks; the vaccination brought this down to a week the next time I caught Covid). I've never had flu since having an annual flu vaccine though (thank goodness). However, if the Covid vaccine was £20 or so I wouldn't hesitate to get it.

Marmunia10667 · 09/12/2024 14:31

Our family didn't have any vaccines. Even my 83-year-old mum just had a few shivers for three days.

No one could pay me to inject that poison into me. Who rolls up to a vaccination centre and lets someone in a hazmat suit inject them?!

All I see around me is myocarditis, heart problems in young and fit vaccinated people.

Weren't the unvaccinated supposed to all die?

If you look at the actual pesky facts you’ll find more people experience heart issues after contracting Covid than after the jab. I had 3 Covid jabs and never once saw someone in a hazmat suit. What absolute scaremongering nonsense 🙄

Cornettoninja · 09/12/2024 14:52

Notmoog · 09/12/2024 13:55

well, reducing the severity is a guess and again, anecdotally, people who had the vaccine appear to get iller than those who don't.

Factually, people who have received the Covid vaccine (past the initial nationwide rollout) are already at a greater risk because of their medical profile. It’s not a surprise that someone with an already compromised immune system through age or associated conditions would be iller than someone without those with a normal functioning immune system even with a vaccine.

incidentally @Greybottle, your experience of catching covid (presumably some months after a booster) demonstrates the above.

have it or don’t have it. Completely up to you. You’re the only one who has the knowledge about your medical status and you’re free to make whatever decision you like.

Notmoog · 09/12/2024 14:19

unless your friends are over the age of 75 they were very very much the exception.
The number of previously fit middle aged people who died of covid was absolutely minute

Might have been nice to say something pleasant within your post acknowledging that the poster's friends died. Sort of a basic level of decency really.

Sorry for your loss @Parker231 Flowers

sorrynotathome · 09/12/2024 14:53

I had the vaccines as they were offered. I’ve never had Covid so, anecdotally, the vaccines prevented me catching it.

Berlinlover · 09/12/2024 14:53

I haemorrhaged for two days after receiving the Covid vaccine. Now I have cancer which started in my womb and I completely blame the vaccine. The worst part is I never wanted the vaccine in the first place and only took it because of the insane and draconian measures in Ireland at the time. I will regret that decision for the rest of my life.

Tbh I actually think it's criminal.

I was one of the first to get it as worked in healthcare at the time.

Even a cursory glance at AstraZeneca trial told me that it should not be given to 30-40 women (they had to stop the trial multiple times due to Gillian barres reactions).

I wrote to Boris at the time about it. It was clear as day.

So as I knew it would be compulsory I rushed to get the Pfizer in case they made AZ the only option.

I had a systemic allergic reaction. Had covid multiple times since badly when I had not had it previously (whilst working in homes with outbreaks).

Series of weird events for me, my partner and others anecdotally (my partner went temporarily blind and ended up in the stroke unit where they couldn't find anything).

It's a shame because I have never been antivax before and it's made me wary now of new medicines. I'm pregnant and there's the new RSV vaccine and I'm torn whether I should get it or not when before I wouldn't thought twice.

The fact Pfizer are allowed to not disclose their trial data for 75 years to me is seriously fishy. Why?! They have something to hide. And it's criminal. I'm convinced this is why they were trying to vaccinate the children. They were the only control group remaining. Thankfully many countries didn't fall for that.

That happened my mum's friend's child.

If you'd turned off TV and other media, would you have noticed the millions of people dying with 'flu' and dropping dead in the street.

No, I wouldn't have either. I work in the media. It was all hyped up.

Who said anything about people dying in the street? 🙄

I’m assuming you don’t work for the dreaded “mainstream media”?

Working in the media doesn’t make you an expert on Covid.

so sorry to hear that, you're by no means the only one and hopefully the harms will be acknowledged one day.

@Notmoog I'm very interested in why it makes people so angry when challenged on this subject.
Most people do not do extensive research before accepting medical treatment, medications or vaccines. It's mostly based on trust - a trust in authority and that the medical professionals are the experts, have trained all their lives and know their science.
As soon as that is called into question, it undermines everything we thought we knew and could trust.
However it is perfectly legitimate to ask questions about what a vaccine contains, how do we know it's safe if it was developed and rushed through a process that would ordinarily take decades to test and approve. Most doctors do not have the answers to these questions either and a good doctor would understand why an individual would want to know.
I don't care if people don't agree with me, and we can only do what we believe is best for ourselves and our loved ones.
There are plenty of doctors who disagree with vaccinations but their voices have mostly been suppressed (Dr Ahmad Malik, Dr Sam White, Dr Barbara O'Neil, Dr David Cartland, Dr William Makis to name some off the top of my head).
Science is flawed - lobotomies, thalidomide - and asking questions should be encouraged, not shut down.

what frustrates me is the people who jump in and start going on about 5g and Bill gates.
is it really too hard for them to see many people have perfectly legitimate concerns over these particular injections.
Why on earth does that make one a CT?
Dunno if they think they're being clever or funny but it makes no sense.

I have often wondered why most mumsnetters
accept without question the need to take endless vaccines.

I prefer to question things. However I never get covid nor even a 'flu. Touch wood as they say.

notnorman · 09/12/2024 15:03

Notmoog · 09/12/2024 14:09

remember when the injections first had the big roll out?
Remember people pointing out the heart/ neurological/ menstrual issues?
Remember how they were slated on here for being thick conspiracy theorists?
remember them being told those issues were nothing to do with the injections and unless you're a medical professor of some sort then your opinion is worthless?
I remember it very well

I could have done without the myocarditis tbh

I volunteered at vaccines centres, no-one wore hazmat suits.

I've had all the vaccines. No side effects at all. Had COVID once, fairly mildly.

I last had flu in 2018. Since then I've been getting the vaccinations yearly and not had it (fingers crossed).

fivebyfivebuffy · 09/12/2024 15:08

Just keep having boosters as there isn't a good choice for me either way

Never had any side effects apart from the normal ones I get with flu
If I caught covid and got unwell and posted on here I would get "but were you vaccinated? You have to protect yourself as you can't expect people to stay in to protect yourself. Why didn't you avoid people? Why were you at X event?"
Immunocompromised

rosemole · 09/12/2024 15:14

@Notmoog having serious doubts about the safety of a brand new vaccination has nothing to do with flat earthers or moon landings!

People are entitled to inform themselves as much as they want and make their own choices about their own lives.

Spanielsaremad · 09/12/2024 15:14

I've not had the flu or covid jabs despite being offered them every year. My employer even pays for a flu vaccine.
I've had covid twice. I only tested because someone else in the house had it and I was visiting vulnerable people. I had no symptoms of covid at all despite being unvaccinated. DH is the same.
Every human body is different and reacts differently to things. It's an individual choice.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 09/12/2024 15:15

I think of the Covid vaccine in the same way that I do the flu vaccine now.

Both viruses mutate quickly so the vaccine is never going to be 100% effective at stopping them in their tracks, but it does give your immune system a heads up about roughly what it might come up against.

Working in healthcare I have been offered all of the Covid jabs as well as annual flu jabs and I have accepted them all.

I also worked in a vaccination centre during Covid and never once saw a hazmat suit. Masks, visors and aprons only. The amount of rubbish that some people spout is bonkers!

They were both under 70 with no underlying health conditions. Equally relevant are the numbers of long Covid cases and the long term impact this is having on their lives

Then you either have a lot of friends or your friendship group is disproportionately unlucky. Either way, sorry for your loss.

Very much not true for certain demographics. For instance, young, healthy males are far more likely to get myocarditis from the jab than from Covid. This is pretty mainstream knowledge now.

Thoughtsareswirling · 09/12/2024 15:22

I’ve had Covid once and only one vaccine. So had my husband. Lots of people we know have had it multiple times and been very ill despite having all the vaccines available. Personally I don’t believe the vaccines reduce the effects at all. .

They had their appointments for the 1st vaccine but died before they could have it. Unfortunately as DH worked on a Covid hospital ward he saw so many deaths
