It's been a while since I posted . Developed sudden flu symptoms in the night & tested positive to covid this morning. Seeing more twitter - X re new wave, new variant. I know cases were still happening but wondered how many are getting it now - and how last

Covid is here to stay , it's not going to wave a little white flag after all these people have had vaccines that think it makes them immune to it

It will do what all viruses do and that keep on mutating into the next version of itself

Yes, it is here to stay. Someone up thread mentioned to use common sense however very few people have commom sense. Just this week, I was exposed to a virus while babysitting. There was active sickness D&V and the parents didn't tell me and by right they should have isolated for 24 hours and allowed the big to pass.

Then I came home and my mother has a dose of whatever it is and there's no manners being used.

There's a lot of sick people who will not carry out basic consideration for other people and refuse to isolate themselves while they are ill and continue on mixing with people and passing on their sickness.

UnmentionedElephantDildo · 19/08/2023 18:54

Covid isn't just a respiratory virus.

It can have serious impact on the brain ("fog" is a type of brain damage, which may or may not reverse, also it can lead to earlier onset of, and/or worsening symptoms of dementia), on the cardiovascular system (increased risk of stroke, heart attack), on the immune system (possibly lasting months, and as we get more data, maybe years, leading to increased incidence and severity of other diseases) and on the metabolism (increases in both T1 and T2 diabetes) and on muscles (fatigues, cardiac issues)

Now, from an individual perspective, the increase in those risks might seem unimportant (something going from say 1% to 2% risk might not trouble you). But from a population point of view this is very bad news because of the impact on health services and because of the economic effect (more people needing sick leave)

Plus there's long covid to consider.

beeonmybonnett · 19/08/2023 18:43

Exactly. Just like flu. If people are worried about it, then they should get their annual vaccines and just practice and maintain excellent standards of hygiene, including staying home when sick.

We never shut down things or mandated masks before covid for other respiratory viruses. It’s been 3 years now, many of the population are vaccinated or otherwise have immunity and the virus isn’t as serious anymore so it’s time to move on and treat it like any other respiratory bug.

I get that some people are vulnerable to these bugs and yes they should be careful, I’m not disputing that, but I don’t think it’s a reason to recommend mandating masks or restrictions - we’ve all been there, done that and got the t shirt. I think we are past it now.

just need to live with the virus and use basic common sense to help stop vulnerable people getting seriously ill from the likes of covid or flu.

But it's not just like flu. I got flu once in 15 years. COVID is several times a year an no one's knows what way they will be hit with the infection whether it be mild symptoms or flu like symptoms for a few weeks.

This.

Ive had flu twice in 59 years. I’ve had Covid twice in less than 18 months and it has floored me this time.

Which is why people should practice good hygiene and ensure they are vaccinated if they are concerned.

I don’t what people are looking for - another lockdown ??

I think the people who insist on dismissing Covid are just showing themselves to be massively ignorant and ill-informed.

Agree.

I don’t think anyone on this thread has suggested another lockdown. Unless I’ve missed a post?

UnmentionedElephantDildo · 19/08/2023 19:15

Lockdown?

No, I've not seen anyone advocating that.

What I'd like to see is masking in healthcare settings
Investment in ventilation (especially hospitals, educational settings, transport systems and across other indoors places over time)
Masks on public transport during peaks

(The virus might mutate to evade both wild and vaccine immunity, but it can't mutate to evade masks, or transmit so readily in cleaner air)

I'd also like to see a wider vaccination programme, and the provision of MAB prophylaxis to the critically vulnerable.

And better adherence to the guidelines that if you have it, you stay home for 5 days unless it's truly essential that you go out (with same levels of compliance as, for example, not taking your DC out and about when they have active, not-yet-scabbed chickenpox vesicles; or 48 hours with D&V, etc)

panko · 19/08/2023 19:16

Do the lfts still pick it up?

panko · 19/08/2023 19:17

And long covid is awful so no I don't want to get it again ta

TinkerbellefromYorkshire · 19/08/2023 19:21

Where did it go before " it came back"? It never went . I've just had my fourth bout of the new variant. The BA 2.86..
First time before vaccinations was horrific.. l became suicidal.. and I've had some horrible illnesses but nothing like that.. and still long covid symptoms.. 2nd and 3rd after l had all vaccinations was like bad flu..
This last bout was horrific ( became suicidal again) .. gave me ulcers on my throat and laryngitis. ( one of the symptoms) left me with ear infection and deaf in one ear..l couldn't control my bowels and bladder.. vomiting every day.. loads more foods tasting of pure salt ( like my 1st time) . GP gave me diazepam and got me a councellor ( via phone).
I honestly can't go through it again.
Hope you only get it mild.
Best of luck .

panko · 19/08/2023 19:16

Yes they do. This variant is not nice at all despite hearing several people in real life describing it as ‘just a head cold’. It’s absolutely floored me this time.

xyz111 · 19/08/2023 19:24

I've had covid since last Thursday, tested negative this Thursday. Just felt like a heavy cold really. Nothing out of the ordinary.

UnmentionedElephantDildo · 19/08/2023 19:26

There's always going to be a range of severity in the acute cases from asymptomatic, through grottiness, to proper poorly at home, to absolutely floored, to hospital needed.

You are somewhat more likely to get long covid if the acute case is moderate/severe, but unfortunately it also occurs following even the very mildest of cases.

All sounds very sensible.

K73c · 19/08/2023 19:37

Thanks everyone for your posts. Didn't expect to see so many ! I was considering not bothering returning after the first few comments!! I don't think anyone , abs certainly not me , suggesting we need lick down etc ....just generally interested the prevalence out there . And obviously there is quite a bit . I hope you get better soon . For he it did start how I remember flu ,with sudden intense aches in limbs ,headache and fever .today a little sure throat and v bunged up . Hadn't tested for months and wondered if we would end up binning these tests , but just two wks ago I had sore throat that lingered for days and days so took test before hosp app and that and others that wk were negative. Then one day it disappeared and I was fine for best part of a week .

Funnily enough read about the new variant yesterday....then the symptoms last night . I have weekly medical appointments and although not critically low immunity , I'm more susceptible than a lot and need to keep nutrition up . And awaiting surgery which is not like threatening but holding me back and it estimated sept/Oct .

Have two kids too and of course dread them getting sick same time.

I'm glad I did pop back to the thread I started,to see so many lovely responses but sorry so many suffering too . I know it's going to keep coming around , but surely good to be aware so can be more vigilant again . Not to become frantic but to be aware .

Obv we won't hear nowt from gov until run out of beds , let alone staff - no correction, we run out of those already!!(ex nurse, had to give up due to health reasons) .

I had it mildly last week and now my DD has it. High temperature, achy, cough and cold. I was in bed for three days, then felt much better.

My French colleagues are saying the numbers are rising again in France.

But it’s mainly spread through air not by contact. So the best hygiene in the world isn’t going to work very well.

Unless you wash your mouth and nose as well as you’d hands.Confused

Felixinthefactory · 19/08/2023 19:45

Had night sweats for a few nights which I put down to age, although also runny nose and tiredness. Decided to test today and it was positive. Pretty much just feels like bad head cold and nowhere near as bad as when I had it this time last year. Tested as will avoid seeing vulnerable parents or going into busy office and spreading to colleagues, some of whom will inevitably be vulnerable or living with someone who is.

If everyone practiced good manners it would go a long way. That along with ventilation will help. When I got covid last year I knew my exposure source and it came from one person in work. He doesnt have allergies or sinus but it sounded like he had sinusitis and that with just coughing into the open. I became unwell a number of days after him.

I wasn't on public transport. I wasn't in crowed places. Nobody at home was sick with covid. My only exposure to sickness at the time was from him.

People need to practice manners.
Manners. Manners. Manners.

That with ventilation and hygiene would go a long way.

There is ventilation and staying home when sick. Coughing and sneezing into tissues or your elbow etc etc.

These measures would mean less covid, less mental health issues, more education, more people in work, better health, less pressure on health resources etc.

Why on earth would you want that? Surely it's a good thing to continue the trend of thousands of kids with long covid and hundreds of thousands forced out of work? Why are we bothered about huge levels of kids being absent due to sickness? Who cares that taxpayer subsidises those forced into work to infect others and take some out of employment / education completely? Why would we want better infection control in hospitals? Why suggest these things when we can ignore the large volume of research on covid and organ damage? Can't you just say it's like a cold/it's boring and shrug?!

HaveYouHeardOfARoadAtlas · 19/08/2023 22:16

Dh has bad flu symptoms and then tested positive for covid today. I only got him to test as I was meant to be meeting a medically vulnerable friend. If he’d had a cold I’d still have gone but couldn’t go if he had covid….not fair on her.

id assume most people aren’t testing and there’s a lot of people walking around with it currently.
