covid coming back - but how bad is this wave?

It's been a while since I posted . Developed sudden flu symptoms in the night & tested positive to covid this morning. Seeing more twitter - X re new wave, new variant. I know cases were still happening but wondered how many are getting it now - and how last

OP posts:

There are sarky twats about on this site..

I've got it, 3rd time plus 4 vaccines. It feels like flu. Yes people get flu every year, but I have had 'proper' flu once in 49 years. I have had this 3 times in 2 years..and each time I'm properly bed bound with it for a few days and I'm not a snowflake, so it is more impactfull than flu, but it is also more significant than a cold - especially to those who are vulnerable.
Those that say God not this again... it IS important. It meant I didn't see my elderly dad.. a cold probably won't kill him, covid could easily do so. So knowing its going up means I might test the bad cold symptoms that come before the worst bit, if I'm due to see him. I don't think we should all panic and wear masks or lock down but equally a little common sense does no harm....I'd rather not give it to a bus full on a non urgent journey, and I'm sure they would prefer me to stay in for a few days too !

My dad coped with 6 months lock down, on his own 2 months after my mum died. Why should my selfishness or ignorance knock him off now, just as his world is starting to be a bit brighter.

Yes we learn to live with it, but maybe that does mean live a little more considerately than we all did before.

Hedjwitch · 19/08/2023 16:30

My friend had it last week. SiL has it this week. I cant get worked up about it tbh. If I get it,I get it.
I refuse to do masks and lock down again

Niftyswiftie · 19/08/2023 16:31

A few people in my family have covid and they are all really ill. They've had it before and only got mild symptoms so I think there's a horrible strain going around right now.

ismu · 19/08/2023 16:32

Sorry that idiots have waded in OP I can guarantee you that if they've ever actually had flu and not just a bad cold they wouldn't be so flippant. Everyone of them a fully paid up member of the Leopards Eating Peoples Faces party.

So many arsey people on this thread. Why bother to read a thread about Covid just to tell everyone you're one of "those" people?

No one is suggesting we lock down again🙄

Let’s not treat covid any differently to how we treat the likes of flu.

Yes, unfortunately, some people may get seriously ill and/or die if they catch covid, just like some people with the flu may do, but the best thing you can do is just stay at home when you’re sick, avoid unnecessary in-person contact with people, wash your hands and make sure you’re vaccinated.

Honestly it’s boring hearing about this new wave. It’s been 3 years.

Well, maybe just be grateful you're not vulnerable & waiting for surgery.

use you common sense & stay off the covid threads, no one is forcing you to open then, especially daft when they're in the COVID section.

NeedTheSeaside · 19/08/2023 17:13

seratoninmoonbeams · 19/08/2023 14:39

😆 how is a yawn 🥱 emoji snide?! I rarely comment so don't know how you've singled me out with regards to that.

It's RUDE. The OP has cause you worry with underlying illness & waiting for surgery. Post a yawn is rude. Would you do it to someone with cancer worried about getting noro virus or something?

The press are bigging up this new variant just in time for vaccine booster season. What a surprise. Anyone would think they received lots of advertising money from vaccine companies.

I can tell you what’s also boring - 3 years of debilitating Long Covid.

To dismiss it as flu is incredibly naive.

Rollonsept · 19/08/2023 14:48

Even then we have never locked down. I'm surprised these threads are allowed

@Rollonsept

why are you surprised these threads are allowed? Most bizarre.

this is the COVID section.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 19/08/2023 17:19

I caught it at a concert on 14th July. It’s left me in a total mess although the infection was quite mild.

Brain fog, severe debilitating exhaustion, weak legs, severe headaches, nausea. I feel shit. I wish people bloody wore masks, then l would t still be unwell 5 weeks later.

topnoddy · 19/08/2023 17:47

Covid is here to stay , it's not going to wave a little white flag after all these people have had vaccines that think it makes them immune to it

It will do what all viruses do and that keep on mutating into the next version of itself

FofB · 19/08/2023 17:57

Went on holiday 3 weeks ago. All 4 of us caught it. Took a week to test negative and we are all still wiped out.

Im sure you know this but if symptoms remain after 12 weeks from infection then see GP for potential long covid diagnosis.

The treatments are geared towards managing it (as you know we don't have any medical cure) but there's things that help.

Im so sorry you're still suffering.

One of my patients (in Long Covid clinic) caught it in February having worked in healthcare all through the pandemic.

It's awful.

BabyIcecream · 19/08/2023 18:16

People saying they are 'bored' of covid aren't we all?? But it's not gone away and has significant impact for some people.

I'm 18 months into long covid. Mainly recovered but to me it definitely wasn't just a cold. Therefore I'd still test and ask my family to do so. I'd like to avoid it if possible.

I don't think we will ever see full lockdowns again but some measures such as masks etc may be needed.

Hospital's regularly implement measures for outbreaks that aren't covid such as norovirus. Covid will be treated no differently.

AllLopsided · 19/08/2023 18:28

I have it for the first time and I'm sicker than I thought I would be. Remember lots of friends who had it in the last year or so and basically had a bad cold.

I have high temp (in bed for two days, managed half-and-half bed and sofa today), associated chills (it's 36° out and I was shivering), breathing difficulties, dry then chesty cough, headache, elevated heart rate, very sore throat (as bad as strep throat), no voice at all for 3 days now. I don't ache much but DH ached a lot. I now have diaphragm and rib pain from coughing and sneezing... hurts every time I breathe in. I feel worse than I did with the strep throat 3 or so years ago but the difference was I got antibiotics quickly for that and started feeling better 24 hours after starting them.

So in my opinion it's pretty bad. Surrounded by people saying they'd forgotten about Covid.

I'm fully vaxed and my last booster was in March.

Tiddlywinks63 · 19/08/2023 18:29

Covid is not going to go away, it will continue to mutate until it burns itself out I presume.
Hopefully vaccinations will help keep on top of it and protect the most vulnerable.
With people no longer testing or reporting it is going to be difficult to get valid statistics, it’s a case of individuals managing their symptoms and 🤞🏻

wendall456 · 19/08/2023 18:35

We got back from a holiday yesterday. 3 out of 4 of us have tested positive, DD started with sore throat and temp yesterday evening then myself and DS woke up feeling rough this morning. My DD had a text from her friend who was on holiday with us to say she tested positive this afternoon - she tested as was due to see GP's who are vulnerable. Out of interest I did a test as did DD and both positive. My son also made a friend on holiday and she text him about an hour ago to say she is ill. We are all up and about but taking it easy. Temps are between 38 and 38.4.

Honestly, I don’t think masks will ever come back again - barely anybody would wear them.

They didn’t work IMO when they were mandated so I can’t see how they would work in the future.

Crazyforcavies · 19/08/2023 18:40

DH tested positive yesterday and only has mild cold symptoms so far. I have a faint positive today. Trying to get organised in case we both have to take to our beds.

Exactly. Just like flu. If people are worried about it, then they should get their annual vaccines and just practice and maintain excellent standards of hygiene, including staying home when sick.

We never shut down things or mandated masks before covid for other respiratory viruses. It’s been 3 years now, many of the population are vaccinated or otherwise have immunity and the virus isn’t as serious anymore so it’s time to move on and treat it like any other respiratory bug.

I get that some people are vulnerable to these bugs and yes they should be careful, I’m not disputing that, but I don’t think it’s a reason to recommend mandating masks or restrictions - we’ve all been there, done that and got the t shirt. I think we are past it now.

just need to live with the virus and use basic common sense to help stop vulnerable people getting seriously ill from the likes of covid or flu.

Are the actual statistics also sponsored by the vaccine companies? The stupid, likencovid, are always with us.

That’s great for the 1.3 million with long Covid. I’m sure they enjoy ‘living’ with it.

That's a big part of the workforce.
