AIBU to be sick of people who think it's all back to normal?

Woke to the news that my cousin died early this morning of Covid. No underlying conditions and she was vaccinated. But she was elderly. She hardly ever went out but must have picked it up on a rare outing to the local shop.

People are still dying and we should still be looking out for those vulnerable to this awful disease. It isn't all back to normal. My cousin is dead and she wouldn't be but for Covid.

The lockdown lovers dont want to pay more tax so people can get sick pay That is why they prefer restrictions

Nonsensical - your "lockdown lovers" would have to pay even more tax to pay for the costs of lockdowns, i.e. furlough, SEISS, etc.

forgotmyusername1 · 01/01/2023 19:57

Someone has now 'released the kraken' have they?

Well in the words of William Wallace in Braveheart 'they may take our lives but they will never take our freeeeedom'

Trish Greenhalgh of Independent Sage now reporting a new covid variant called Kraken which is very serious. She says we all now need to be avoiding indoor mixing and large crowds.

Tweeps, the expert WhatsApp groups are kicking off. Kraken (XBB.1.5) is a variant of SARS-CoV-2 that you wouldn't want to catch. Cases are rising. It's time to ratchet up precautions. High-quality, close-fitting masks work. Avoiding crowds helps. Being outdoors helps. Stay safe.

Trish 'wear a sanitary towel inside your mask for extra protection' Greenhalgh? 😆

A lot of the lockdown lovers are retired so dont have to pay for it.

@JanusTheFirst so sorry for your loss.

I havent RTFT as I assume some of the replies will be a difficult read and won't take into account your raw grief.

I lost my mum to covid in 2020, and the circumstances were traumatic. I absolutely understand your anger and the feeling it just might have been avoided if someone had just been more careful and didn't infect her, I was in that place for a long time and sometimes I do return there. The anger can be all consuming and it is so hard. My brother, 2 years on, is still extremely angry - mostly with the hospital where she caught it - and we can't talk about it as he just cannot be reasoned with.

But realistically all the precautions did was reduce the pressure on the NHS and give time for vaccines to be developed and rolled out. Even during precautions people were being infected and dying, your cousin might still have caught covid. The precautions we have now are the vaccines, they are much more effective than the masks and other precautions were. Continuing the rest as well is simply not practical or sustainable and sadly that means we all have a level of risk.

I sincerely wish you strength over the coming weeks.

This is the new normal. It's here to stay. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Peoniesandcream · 01/01/2023 20:03

@doingitforyorkshire I'm a ward sister on an elderly ward. Of course we can test for flu, that's how we know who has it! We have a lot of pts unwell with flu/ covid at the moment. Obviously we still wear masks etc at work but most people don't wear them anymore out and about. It's a lot less common now to die from covid and complications especially since the vaccinations Obviously. Apart from more lockdowns, which most wouldn't adhere to now I'm not sure what else we can do. Most people do test and isolate if they have it.

I’m very sorry for your loss but people need to take responsibility for themselves now. Selfish, yes but I personally and my family have given up a lot to protect others. Sorry, it’s the way it is. Wear a mask, sanitise, leave the house for an hour a day, bleach your shopping, Your decision

It isnt that the lives of the over 70's are expendable - it is that the lives of the young should not be sacrificed any longer.

Um, where did I mention anything about sacrifice @forgotmyusername1? I certainly don't remember saying anything about revisiting lockdown. I have a 14yo and a 10yo. I want them to have normal lives. I was referring very specifically to the scathing remarks made upthread about 'elderly' people, ie people over 70, who are expected to drop dead at any time anyway apparently. To me someone in their seventies isn't elderly, but that's neither here nor there. I mentioned previously that it should be no great hardship for someone (well ok most people, as there are exceptions) to wear a mask when out and about if they are coughing and spluttering - whatever the virus. I thought it was one little act of consideration we could take away from the whole shit storm. If that's your idea of sacrifice, fair enough. But it isn't mine.

She did. I'm sure she said a tshirt folded over with a panty liner was an effective homemade mask. I'll try to find the tweet.

"It was called post viral fatigue which is what long COVID is, a new fancy word for the same thing."

No it's not the same. People suffer with a host of other symptoms with
Long Covid , my daughter now has heart problems, mast cell activation syndrome. There is hardly anything she can eat now that doesn't cause a rash! It's not just about being bloody tired and fatigued.

I would argue that it has been the other way around.

In order to protect the over 80's and vulnerable from an illness with a 99% survival rate we have

Caused a massive upsurge in mental health problems amongst the young

Tanked the economy

Increased the rate of suicide in younger people

Tanked peoples businesses

Increased the rate of inflation to the point where having the heating on is no longer affordable for a great many people

Taken two years away from children which will have a massive impact on their education and social skills

Made work from home normal thereby isolating people

Increased rates of child abuse and domestic abuse as people couldnt escape.

Increase in cancer and other major illness deaths as people couldnt get treatment

Made a phone gp appointment 'the norm' meaning people are either not bothering, being misdiagnosed or going to a&e for stuff which should be dealt with by doctors if anyone could actually see one

Fractured families

We did that - us younger people stayed at home to protect the elderly but at great personal cost. We can do it no more. If people want to shut themselves away forever then that is their choice (my 75 year old inlaws have chosen this - while they wont catch covid their life is bloody dismal as they never leave the house, still disinfect their shopping and wont see their grandchildren due to fear).

It isnt that the lives of the over 70's are expendable - it is that the lives of the young should not be sacrificed any longer.

Brilliant post!
I'm 57, and I know that we have to prioritise the young. If I pop my clogs, it would be neither a shock nor a tragedy. I have had my education and my career, and we shouldn't be denying those opportunities to our children and young people.

Agreed

LizzieW1969 · 01/01/2023 20:26

I’m a sufferer of Long Covid myself. Despite this, the last thing I want is a return to restrictions. I have 2 DDs of 13 and 10 and they need to live a normal life, going to school and mixing with their friends.

I’m very sorry for your loss, though, OP, and can understand where you’re coming from. Covid is a very cruel illness for a lot of us.

SadOrWickedFairy · 01/01/2023 20:28

In order to protect the over 80's and vulnerable from an illness with a 99% survival rate we have

None of the over 80's or vulnerable asked for any of that did they? They had NO choice, many of them did not want to live in the way that was imposed on them, they did not ask nor demand that the young make the high level of sacrifice that they did, it was imposed on them.

Stop blaming the over 80's and vulnerable for something that was outside of their control.

Many over 80's and vulnerable that I know wanted to be given the choice of how they spent the last years of their lives, that was denied to them.

Yes, some people behave as though the elderly are a hive mind.

forgotmyusername1 · 01/01/2023 20:43

I agree with the initial lockdown as we didnt know what we were dealing with. The first lockdown should have been the only lockdown.

I was responding to the comment that people living their lives normally means the lives of the elderly are expendable- it doesn't, it just means that the rest of us cannot live in a 2020 bubble any longer as the cost to the rest of society is too great.

You are correct that a lot of elderly didnt want the restrictions either- my neighbour who is mid 80's was going to meet with her equally elderly friends during lockdown. I know this as i saw her going out and she asked me not to tell anyone but they had all decided that they would rather risk it and see each other than be isolated. I offered to take her.

Lockdown did terrible harm to people living alone.

The tests should be free but they aren't - blame the tories.

Nope. I disagree. Tests were free for a long time. Rightly so. But that stopped end of March, rightly so.

Exactly nothing is free!
