AIBU to be sick of people who think it's all back to normal?

Woke to the news that my cousin died early this morning of Covid. No underlying conditions and she was vaccinated. But she was elderly. She hardly ever went out but must have picked it up on a rare outing to the local shop.

People are still dying and we should still be looking out for those vulnerable to this awful disease. It isn't all back to normal. My cousin is dead and she wouldn't be but for Covid.

It is absolutely chilling the way illness is equated with morality. Nothing much has changed since the 80s

loopyloutoo · 01/01/2023 17:39

OP, I sympathise with you on the loss of your relative and I can understand if you child has long Covid then you are going to have a very specific opinion on this, but I'm not sure what you hoped to hear on this thread aside from what you got above.

Unfortunately, people die from Covid just as they do from every other illness, all of which in an ideal world would be avoidable, but it's not.

@IDontCareMatthew : do you know which British schools actually used air filter tech to try to prevent Covid? Although much proposed, I think only the Bradford RCT did this to any scale. NYC & German schools abandoned the idea at large scale (I think) due to cost.

Bradford results not out yet even though the trial is long-finished. I'm pretty sure they did not get results in support of the intervention.

You have to admire the planet sized arrogance that thinks it can control how a virus behaves and makes itself responsible for the wellbeing of society while throwing aspersions on everyone else's behaviour.

Surprised the OP hasn't mentioned SAGE yet

How rude and unnecessary. Do you feel better for that?

My earlier post was not misinformed about mask wearing.

I take the word of the WHO rather than a random poster on mumsnet.

www.who.int/emergencies/diseases/novel-coronavirus-2019/question-and-answers-hub/q-a-detail/coronavirus-disease-covid-19-masks

I haven't asked for another lockdown or any extreme measures, just for the community to do simple things to protect the vulnerable. If people choose not to, there isn't much I can do about it. Other than wish they cared more.

My cousin is dead. She died of Covid. She may not have had to. Her life was as valuable as anyone else's and those here who think it wasn't are beneath contempt.

She was loved, she was fit, she was enjoying retirement, very well earned. I will miss her so much.

I will do what I can to keep alive those loved by others. Masks are no problem if it saves a life. Distancing is fine to protect others. If I have Covid I will stay indoors so no one suffers a loss that was my fault.

It’s fine to adjust as you want but not everyone will feel the same.

Distancing is fine to protect others

No, distancing is NOT fine. It causes immense harm.

Stop selfishly expecting to impose restrictions on other people because of your personal feelings and fears.

You selected a quote out of context. The beginning of the paragraph was, "I will do what I can..." and this and other things followed. Don't pretend I was trying to impose.

No problem for you. Distancing is fine for you. Don't speak for everyone else.

I was speaking for myself, that's quite clear from the opening sentence of the para graph.

HisNameWasMike · 01/01/2023 18:05

You didn't start a thread to speak for yourself so I'm afraid I'm not falling for that.

You've had near 30 pages of responses and selectively replied to very few.

Butitsnotfunnyisititsserious · 01/01/2023 18:14

It's your whole attitude. Even from the first post

People are still dying and we should still be looking out for those vulnerable to this awful disease.

I get that your relative died. And I'm very sorry for your loss, but so have others from non Covid related issues, including those caused by lockdowns. Some people cannot wear masks. Covid isn't going away. We do have to learn to live with it.

Good! Sounds like a waste of money! Do it for one school then you have to do it for all

There's no money

LondonCat7 · 01/01/2023 18:27

I really don't get what issue people have with basic common sense measures like socios distancing and limits on group sizes.

Personally I loved dining during lockdown when tables were spaced well apart and service was quicker due to lower capacity.

Equally it's common sense to me that in the middle of a global pandemic you'd want to keep group sizes smaller to avoid spreading infection to lots of people. I'd like to see the rule of six return indoors with perhaps the rule of eight outdoors.

@IDontCareMatthew

Councillor Oliver Patrick on Twitter has been campaigning for all schools to have air filters in every room and for all DC to wear masks.

Yeah he has.... he's not got very far though, bless him

I will ensure my dc are 'exempt' if masks come back anywhere near

No idea how she 'dined out' in lockdown when everything was shut.

Tiswa · 01/01/2023 18:43

@JanusTheFirst i am sorry for your loss. But Covid is here and it is here to stay. Could the measures that you want reduce potentially the numbers - yes probably but given the numbers not that significantly and not without cost. But it sounds as if your cousin was taking measures and it simply is just one of those things.

it is a normal part of the grieving process to blame and rationalise and create what ifs.

there are no countries now that haven’t accepted Covid is here and here forecer

Speaking of keeping fit seems we cant do right for doing wrong

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 01/01/2023 18:46

It seems we're back to being here for the benefit of the NHS rather than the other way round. Incidentally, I've fallen and needed an ambulance and A&E while walking (some idiot leaving plastic ties on the pavement that I tripped over), so not sure what telling people not to run will achieve. You can have an accident and need A&E without going out of the front door.

One minute we are all too fat the next minute we are being told not to excersise. Imagine if this was a post on the Relationships board and it was someones partner doing this

Re people out spreading flu-

If someone genuinely has flu they simply can’t crack on, you literally cannot get out of bed, so unlikely to be out spreading it.

Had flu last year and Covid - flu was way worse, although felt terribly tired for 3 weeks post Covid.

This isn't true. Flu symptoms very from person to person, just like everything else.

Reduce the number of guests, increase the cost of utilities, increase the cost of staff, increase the cost of food and either restaurants go under or you have to pay 5x the cost per meal to keep them in business.

Personally I can't afford £60 for a pizza but maybe you can.

Excusemegreentea · 01/01/2023 18:59

This is not true. 75% of us are asymptomatic when we have flu - Linky. But some die (millions in the 1918 pandemic). Covid is asymptomatic in most people, but some, predominantly very elderly people, die. Polio is a mild infection of the gut in the majority of infants, but some suffer permanent damage to the nervous system.

I stand corrected - please can I get an asymptotic version next time 🤞🏻
